SUMMARY:Climate Change and Health - DISCUSSION
DESCRIPTION:The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has issued a new report on the impacts of global warming. This report\, Global Warming of 1.5oC\, contains dire predictions of drought\, disease\, famine and death resulting from greenhouse gas emissions. Is this really how a changing climate will affect us? Will it increase or lessen disease? Our food supply? Weather events like floods or droughts? On October 30\, 2018\, the CO2 Coalition will present a panel discussion of our latest White Paper\, Climate Change and Health. This study\, by Australian physician D. Weston Allen\, examines past\, present and possible future impacts of climate change on a range of human health areas from nutrition to social and mental health\, with insights into energy supplies and sufficiency. The panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer period. \nAuthor: D. Weston Allen\, MD\, obtained a medical degree at the University of Queensland and his FRACGP and Graduate Diploma in Physical Medicine at Sydney University. He pioneered preventive and predictive medicine\, transdermal nicotine for smokers and novel blood spatter studies. \nPanelist: Patrick Michaels\, PhD is the director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute. He is a past president of the American Association of State Climatologists and was program chair for the Committee on Applied Climatology of the American Meteorological Society. \nPanelist: James Steele is Emeritus Director of San Francisco State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus and the author of Landscapes and Cycles: An Environmentalist’s Journey to Climate Skepticism. \nFor reservations\, email info@co2coalition.org or call 571-970-3180. The event is FREE.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook School of Medicine—LECTURE: Innovations in Healthcare Delivery\, with Dr. Beth Haynes
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Healthcare Delivery: All are welcome to join us for a FREE lunch lecture with Dr. Beth Haynes\, medical director of Benjamin Rush Institute. \n  \nBeth Haynes\, MD BRI medical director\nThe need for affordable\, high quality medical care in the US is an ongoing discussion. There are some exciting models that are achieving these goals\, both in the US and internationally: cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty\, MD. What can we learn from these entrepreneurial models to help address the cost and access challenges our country faces? \nLunch guaranteed to those who RSVP 48-hours in advance. Registration Form. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The Health Policy Discussion Club at SUNY Stony Brook University School of Medicine hosted this event\, supported by Benjamin Rush Institute. Seventy-five students attended and were treated to lunch. \nDr. Haynes gave an interesting talk on “Innovations in Health Care Delivery” that discussed some exciting models which are achieving the goals of bringing affordable health care both in the US and internationally. These included cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, and from India\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty. \nThe event was greatly attended\, mainly by first year medical students. Food was served and the lecture was offered as an intellectual learning opportunity (ILO)\, which attendance to three is required to pass one of our first year classes. \nWith this event being the first event that the health policy discussion club has held under new leadership\, we believe that it was incredibly successful. The students were fully engaged with Dr. Haynes’ presentation and enjoyed the free lunch and the opportunity to obtain school credit for their attendance. Many of the students were exposed to the idea of free-market medical care for the first time and\, again\, found this event to be very useful\, especially since there are no real opportunities outside of the health policy discussion club to learn about many different approaches to solving the problems surrounding health care in the U.S.” ~Asha Liverpool\, Health Policy Discussion Club \n“That was a really interesting talk. I hadn’t been exposed to those ideas before. It’s interesting how many other options there are in medicine than the current system.” ~First year medical student\, Stony Brook School of Medicine \n“I really liked the talk. There is so much that I thought was just par for the course in medicine simply because that is the way I had seen it be done. It was interesting seeing the alternative direct care models and how that can provide less expensive care by cutting out the insurance companies. By getting rid of a lot of the overhead\, patients don’t have to pay for billing departments and insurance companies. It challenged me to consider ways to practice medicine that I had not been exposed to before.” ~First year medical student

SUMMARY:SPN 23rd Annual Meeting\, Grand Rapids\, MI
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, moderated a Docs 4 Patient Care panel on health policy in a breakout session. CON laws and other aspects of healthcare policy were discussed. \nFrom the SPNAM.org official website: The SPN Annual Meeting started in 1993 in Traverse City\, Michigan. A dozen people met in a room with the hope of building a robust network of state think tanks throughout the country. Today\, the SPN Annual Meeting brings together over 900 people from around the country\, including state and national leaders\, influencers\, and professionals. \nWe believe that being good enough is not enough to win in the rapidly evolving political environment. We can’t afford to be outgunned\, outmanned and outspent. The future of the country depends on it. \nThat is why the State Policy Network has hosted the Annual Meeting for 23 years running. \nThis year\, the Annual Meeting is returning to the state where it all started. Freedom fighters will gather in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, with an intentional focus on developing the solutions and skills to advance freedom at both the state and national level. Through the lens of our 2015 theme – Experience Freedom – we will consider ways to sharpen our solutions and strategies and help our core audiences envision their need for freedom. We will inspire and challenge ourselves to give Americans opportunities to experience the benefits of freedom to their everyday lives. \nThe program focuses on building leaders\, refining operations\, cultivating excellent communication and outreach strategies\, analyzing policy priorities and training top-notch fundraisers. The SPN Annual Meeting is also the only outlet where state and national leaders can chart collaborative strategies together. SPN purposefully creates an environment to facilitate connections and build coalitions.

SUMMARY:Day of Solidarity: Bringing awareness to the physician and medical student suicide epidemic
DESCRIPTION:Prevent Physician Suicide Click here to see the schedule for an event near you. \nImagine your excitement as a parent getting ready to attend your child’s graduation from medical school. Instead\, you attend his funeral–yet another medical student suicide victim. And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Ashley Maltz\, MD and Pamela Wible\, MD:\n\n\n“Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That’s the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide–a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? And how can we solve a problem when it’s hidden from us?” \n\nLacey Kohlmoos\, an Online Organizing Strategist at Care2 Petitions and wife of a 4th year medical student\, is championing National Day of Solidarity to Prevent Physician Suicide in Philadelphia on Saturday\, August 20th to bring awareness to this dire situation.\n\nFind a National Day of Solidarity event near you! \nThis event is also happening simultaneously in 11 cities across the country\, each with its own lineup of speakers and activities\, in case you can not make it to Philadelphia:\nAthens\, OH\nAustin\, TX\nChicago\, IL\nCleveland\, OH\nDublin\, OH\nHarrogate\, TN\nKansas City\, MO\nMiddletown\, NY\nPhiladelphia\, PA\nSaint Louis\, MO\nWashington\, DC\n\nThe more awareness we raise\, the more we can speak with one voice–a voice of solidarity–to find the root causes of physician and medical student suicide\, and promote solutions to turn the tide.\n\nFulfilling a life’s passion to care for others shouldn’t mean personal suffering–or worse.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What About the Poor? How to Win the Healthcare Debate Without Selling Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivered a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians. \nIt is important that we undertake the task of engaging our future physicians. What are they learning about health policy? Given the state of higher education today\, it’s no surprise that health policy instruction at medical schools is government-centric. But what is surprising is how little formal policy instruction students receive\, which presents a great opportunity to interject the voice of reason into the conversation. Benjamin Rush Institute is doing exactly that. In just the fall semester of 2016\, we reached 1300 medical student5s. Come hear how we are presenting the ideas of individual rights and limited government in a way that even liberal medical students are wiling to consider these alternatives.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn't—Getting Medical Costs Under Control
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivers a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn’t—Getting Medical Costs Under Control. \nThere is much talk about how to control medical costs. Medical inflation continues to outpace general inflation. Why this is happening has much to do with the fact that what is called “health insurance” really isn’t insurance. We argue that coerced wealth distribution is immoral\, but this argument does not resonate with everyone. Being abel to also argue the economic aspects of healthcare can strengthen your ability to make the case for freedom in medical care. Come learn about the nature of insurance\, what it is and isn’t\, why current health policy is doomed to fail\, and what better alternatives exist.

SUMMARY:@NEJM: Ask the Author & Experts: Physician Payment After Medicare Doc Fix
DESCRIPTION:The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) forum held a 40-minute taped Google hangout with panel participants. There was a lot of heated debate about the free market between Josh Umbehr\, AtlasMD and the other panelists. Kristy Hawley\, former chapter president of BRI-Georgetown\, was the student moderator for the online debate. Ms. Hawley was able to ask a question that alluded to the fact that all of these new alternative payment models are driving consolidation into hospitals\, and that it is also difficult for independent physicians to participate in these models because the price to play is too high with the requirements. \n“One criticism I have heard is that solo physicians and small groups do not have the economies of scale needed to participate in alternative payment models that require large amounts of data collection and administrative reporting. Other than providing financial incentives for providers in help them take a risk in investment\, are there any proposals for how to make participation a possibility for all providers? Is there any concern that these new payment models contribute to hospital mergers and practice acquisitions which could in theory drive up costs by decreasing competition?” ~Kristy Hawley\, BRI-Georgetown \nThis debate got 168 views.
