SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine: BRI Intro Meeting & Movie Screening — Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc. — The Movie\nThe OSUMC BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty of the School of Medicine. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. We will also be discussing Benjamin Rush Institute\, why we have a Chapter at OSUMC\, and what the benefits of membership are. \nAll are welcome\, and RSVPs are appreciated to ensure enough refreshments for all. \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-three students attended this event that was centered around the screening of “Poverty Inc.” over lunch. A discussion was held following the film screening to relate the theme of the film to healthcare.

SUMMARY:Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (Chicago) BRI Chapter — Fall General Meeting and Planning Event
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nALL are welcome to attend Chicago Medical School’s Benjamin Rush Institute Chapter’s first informational meeting and networking event. We will be serving snacks and soft drinks\, and will discuss BRI’s mission to promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care. \nWe will also use this as an opportunity to invite interested students to run as BRI Officers\, or volunteer\, and what events we would be interested in holding for the remainder of the academic year. \nWe hope you’ll join us! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nEight (8) interested students joined us at our inaugural event. This meeting had a dual purpose: to serve as a general meeting for the chapter board and affiliated members\, and to provide prospective members — many who had signed up for our email list earlier in the year — information on what we do to achieve our goals\, and how to become full members and seek board positions. \nUnfortunately\, for reasons beyond our control\, we were moved from our scheduled room\, and unable to adequately communicate the change. Needless to say\, turnout was much lower than anticipated. We are going to hold another event soon to ensure that everyone interested has an opportunity to learn about BRI. \nWe did have a productive meeting among board members and other active members\, and have a good plan for the rest of the year in place.

The turnout for the meeting was greater than what we had anticipated! The 25 students in attendance either submitted their name to our email list or heard about the meeting through emails that we had sent out to the class in general. SUMMARY:The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) — Meeting: Welcome & Introduction to BRI
DESCRIPTION:POST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-two (22) OSUMC students attended the BRI Welcome Event on campus. Over lunch\, they listened to presentations by Brennan Wright\, BRI-OSUMC President\, Nic Miller\, BRI-OSUMC Co-President\, and Linda Pan\, BRI-OSUMC Vice President. Brennan welcomed everyone to the event and introduced BRI. Linda then spoke about the different opportunities within BRI\, including the opportunity to attend different types of local and national meetings and conferences\, and making connections with professionals and other medical students. Nic Miller then related his experience about participating with BRI over the past few years\, and explained the reasons for some of the financial problems currently in healthcare. \nBrennan then spoke about the importance of price transparency and Surgery Center of Oklahoma’s success with this model\, which led to a great discussion about the extrapolation of transparency principles\, and whether these ideas are possible everywhere — even in emergency settings. Linda finished up with a detailed introduction to direct primary care and concierge medicine\, which generated a thoughtful discussion about its effectiveness. We also discussed our current “insurance” and how it differs from what most of us at the meeting consider “insurance” (more catastrophic). \nOverall\, it was a well-attended\, thought-provoking\, and educational event! \n—————— \nThe student leaders of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Benjamin Rush Institute Chapter cordially invite you to attend a free introductory meeting for prospective members to learn more about our organization. We plan to share a few key points on liberty in health care\, such as why costs are rising\, how a free market system can be applied\, and alternative ways to run a practice. \nBRI’s mission is “Promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care\, empowered by a robust free enterprise system\, which fosters innovation and reduces costs.” \nWe will be serving lunch and discussing how BRI promotes solutions for affordable\, quality healthcare\, innovation and excellence. RSVPs appreciated to manage food and beverages. \nNOTE: This takes place in the eastern time zone.

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine—BRI Welcome Meeting and Introductory Talk with Dr. Kamal Gursahani
DESCRIPTION:POST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-four (34) students and faculty attended our BRI Welcome lunch and listened to BRI Faculty Adviser Dr. Kamal Gursahani\, MD\, MBA and Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Gursahani opened the meeting with a short talk about leadership. She mentioned the importance of taking an active role in education and the medical industry in general. Dr. Gursahani praised BRI for our role in providing clarity — or at least a balanced perspective — on many of the issues going on in healthcare today. \nFollowing Dr. Gursahani\, John Flo\, BRI-St. Louis President\, gave a short powerpoint presentation summarizing BRI. Mr. Flo spoke about who Dr. Benjamin Rush was\, BRI’s guiding principles\, what BRI-SLU accomplished last year\, and what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. John emphasized the educational and professional development opportunities that come from BRI membership\, and also encouraged students to think about leadership. \nFollowing the presentation\, Mr. Flo answered students’ questions and talked to several MS1’s about applying for officer positions. He reported that students were much more engaged and excited about these topics than he expected\, and attendance also was higher than he anticipated. It is clear that there is a demand for open dialogue and discussion about healthcare solutions on medical school campuses. \nTESTIMONIALS from Saint Louis University students: \n“I really enjoyed learning about who Benjamin Rush was\, because I always wondered why the group was named after him.” \n“The ‘Wait Till It’s Free’ documentary sounds very interesting! I look forward to hearing their perspective on the British healthcare system.” \n———— \nNOTE: This event takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nEveryone is welcome to come find out about Benjamin Rush Institute\, a non-profit\, non-partisan 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care empowered by a robust free enterprise system\, which fosters innovation and reduces costs. Our Faculty Adviser\, Dr. Kamal Gursahani\, will speak about BRI’s positive impact on the healthcare debate and the importance of leadership in education. \nPapa John’s pizza will be served for lunch. We had 100 attendees and over 70 sign-ups for our email list. They expressed a tremendous interest in learning more about healthcare policy\, the Affordable Care Act\, and the power of markets in medical care. \nOne student said\, “So this is like an economics of health care group? That’s awesome. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Where do I sign up?” The event far exceeded our expectations.
