SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine|Dublin—VOLUNTEERING EVENT: Volunteering for LifeTown
DESCRIPTION:LifeTown is an educational facility that simulates real-life encounters such as banking\, shopping\, crossing the street\, etc\, for people with mental disabilities. BRI\, in conjunction with students at OUHCOM\, will be volunteering in the various booths to help teach these people how to succeed at life tasks. \nInformation from RSVP form: You need to do a background check via https://chabadcolumbus.volunteerhub.com\, but this can be filled out later once we get more information on this part! Casual dress and no ripped jeans. Each volunteer will be role playing. Look at www.lifetowncolumbus.org to get a small taste of what LifeTown is! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Four medical students were assigned stations in LifeTown. Among the booths we filled\, were the hair/nail/massage salon\, the medical station\, the theater\, and the arts and crafts studio. Participants helped teach students how to count and spend money and encouraged them to use terms such as “please\, thank you\, and excuse me.” \n“My experience at LifeTown goes beyond what I can describe with words. In times of stress\, I find myself going back to that magical moment where I was giving a hand massage and manicure to a loving\, giggling child who admired their blue\, pink\, and purple nails as they told me about how much fun they were having as they learn about how to take care of pets\, ride their bike (as they followed the rules\, of course!) and listened to the doctor. Fulfilling moments like those don’t come unless you seek them and I implore every person I know to spend their morning with some absolutely endearing children at LifeTown and have their outlook on life completely change.” ~ participant Kinza Sheikh\, OMS-II \nThe medical station helped teach young students the importance of hygiene such as washing hands and brushing teeth and eating nutritiously. In the theater\, students could buy pop-corn\, candy\, and tickets and were also taught the importance of timeliness—the movie played at strict times posted on the wall. The art studio encouraged participants to make cards and gifts for their mothers for mother’s day. The salon allowed students to relax and appreciate what it’s like to buy a direct service from another person. It also gave them a sense of pride to spend money on their appearance.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend. Please RSVP so that we can ensure proper volunteer groupings for the Mission. \nFaith Mission operates the only kitchens in Franklin County able to serve breakfast\, lunch and dinner every day of the year. We serve more than 600 meals a day (over 220\,000 meals per year). The Faith Mission Community Kitchen serves our shelter residents as well as individuals from the community who need a meal\, welcoming everyone\, and placing no barriers between a person in need and available food. \nKitchen volunteers: Volunteers assist in the preparation\, serving and clean-up of meals. Volunteers work under the supervision of the cooks and Kitchen Manager of Faith Mission. Donations are also appreciated. \nPark in the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 25 volunteers joined in this volunteer event. BRI and the Catholic Medical Association at Marian joined volunteers with Operation Leftover to provide much-needed food\, clothing\, toiletries\, bus passes\, and prayers to the impoverished living on the streets of downtown Indianapolis. Our group came across 15+ people that were in need of help. We gave them any resources we had on us that were donated\, talked with them\, and prayed with them. \n“We have done this in the past\, and it continues to be a very enriching experience. SUMMARY:OUHCOM-Dublin—CHARITY EVENT: Nationwide Children’s Columbus Marathon Medical Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Students from BRI-OUHCOM|Dublin will volunteer as part of the medical team for the Columbus Marathon. \nBRI OUHCOM medical marathon \nWith 18\,000 runners and walkers it will be one of the largest marathons in the country! \nThe BRI-OUHCOM|Dublin chapter leadership is currently looking for medical and support volunteers to assist with medical coverage for the race. With a race this size we will have a lot of volunteer needs: \nFinish Line Crew\nMedical Tent Coverage\nRace Course Medical Coverage\n… and more!\nEven if you don’t consider yourself a “medical” person that is OK\, when can still use you! \nWhat to Expect – Medical volunteers will be positioned at the start/finish line medical area as well as medical tents along the course. We will see a variety of things from a sore shins and knees to someone who collapses at the finish line needing extra assistance. We have a lot of physicians\, nurses\, ATCs\, PTs\, and EMTs on our team. If you don’t consider yourself “medical” we will pair you with a “medical” volunteer to make sure you aren’t put in an uncomfortable situation. \nThe race is Sunday\, October 16th. We will need to meet around 7:00am and will be done no later than 2:00pm. If you can only make it for part of the race that is OK – we still need you! \nIf you are interested please use the green Register button to sign-up. Please include a cell phone number you will have with you on race day. We will use this as a back-up to our emergency communication system. Please make sure you have your cell phone with you on race day. Once you sign up\, your volunteer captain will be in touch regarding parking details. With volunteers needed across all 26.2 miles of the race\, the best parking options will vary depending on where you will be helping. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Three BRI members from OUHCOM volunteered for 7 hours at the Nationwide Children’s Columbus Marathon. Each student helped assist the medical teams on the course and at the finish line medical tent.

Donations are also appreciated. \nPark in the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Ten BRI-Marian chapter students were among 30 other concerned students and citizens to distribute donated food\, blankets\, and clothing to the local homeless. This is the second time BRI-Marian has sponsored this charity event and it is well-received by the community and the less fortunate among us.

Donations are also appreciated. \nPark in the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: A total of 50 people — eight medical students (seven from Marian University and one from Indiana University)\, teamed up with the Thomas More Society and Operation Leftover to gather donations (food\, water\, clothing\, blankets\, hygiene products\, bus passes)\, and then walk around downtown Indianapolis giving these donations to the homeless. It was truly an eye opening experience seeing how these people lived\, along with watching their expressions when we gave them so many things. This was a great event and we look forward to doing this again in the future. \nTo be an official club at MUCOM the school requires we have at least one community service event per semester. When I learned about Operation Leftover I thought this would be something great to do. We ended up getting 4 people to come out to help for BRI\, and the Catholic Medical Association ended up coming as well after BRI promoted the event. I was talking with all the medical students before we started\, and the students from the Catholic Medical Association were very interested in what BRI stands for. They are for getting government regulation out of healthcare\, because they realize it diminishes the doctor-patient relationship. They see it makes healthcare more expensive\, and causes doctors to spend less time with patients because there is more busywork. They also don’t like how these regulations\, Obamacare being the big one\, force doctors to do things for patients that goes against their religion.

DESCRIPTION:BRI-SUNY Downstate will be listed on gofundme.com\, and hosting a free information and donation table outside the cafeteria to raise funds for this very deserving non-profit organization that contributes back to our community. East Flatbush Village (EFV) works with local at-risk youth to help them better their lives. SUNY Downstate and BRI both encourage student leaders to give back to the community and to those in need through charitable work. Please stop by our table and contribute what you can! \n \nA word about East Flatbush Village from their website: “Our organization combats violence within the community by providing these children with recreational activities and educational tools. Our programs enables youths ages 3 through 18 years old to express themselves in creative and positive ways while building their self esteem through football\, swimming\, soccer\, dance\, cheerleading and other recreational activities. These activities provide the youths not only with resources and outlets but also with mentors such as teachers\, coaches and volunteers\, who are willing and able to guide them. Building them a strong foundation which they will carry with them into adulthood.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: As part of a service learning project at SUNY Downstate\, three members of our BRI chapter worked to raise money to donate to East Flatbush Village Inc. We utilized both gofundme and a donation table outside of the cafeteria to raise funds. In total we have raised approximately $550. \n“I have been volunteering with EFV through two different clubs at school\, and after seeing first hand how they give kids the tools to reach their full potential\, I feel very strongly that donations to this organization will be used very effectively. EFV works on the front lines in a disadvantaged community where violence and povertry are all too real. The folks who work there understand the community and know how to best serve the community’s youth. Perhaps even more importantly\, EFV understands that each child is unique\, so they tailor their outreach programs very effectively to the kids’ different interests and needs.” ~Mary Hahn\, BRI-SUNY Downstate president

SUMMARY:Marian University — BRI Euchre Tournament Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:POST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nWe hosted the 1st MUCOM Euchre Tournament ever. We had 7 teams register for the tournament\, 14 people total. The winning team donated their winnings to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. \nThe 1st MUCOM Euchre Tournament winners!\nWe provided pizza and drinks\, raised money for the winning team’s charity and held this fun Euchre tournament to help students relax from studying for a couple hours. For an inaugural Euchre tournament it went well. All-in-all it was a fun event! \n\nWe didn’t really know what to expect\, but everyone we talked to afterward had a really fun time and look forward to the next one. \n*********\nNOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nTake a break from studying\, eat some food\, play some Euchre … maybe talk about healthcare innovations\, ethics\, economics\, or policy? \nThe MUCOM BRI Chapter Euchre Tournament will be a fundraising/charity event. Each team will be charged $10 to enter the tournament\, $5 for individuals. 50% of the tournament entrance fees will go to the winning team’s charity of choice\, PLUS eternal bragging rights for having won the first ever MUCOM Euchre Tournament!
