DESCRIPTION:This conference trains physicians to start or expand a direct primary care practice (DPC) that is based on the private patient to doctor relationship. Through recurring payments (monthly\, quarterly\, or annually)\, patients “contract” directly with their doctor for care for a low fixed fee. \nBy unshackling physicians from paperwork\, bureaucracy\, and reimbursements\, DPC cuts out the middleman to free the doctor’s clinical judgment and create pricing all can afford.\nDPC: A Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice ends the obligation to third party payers and the endless fights with forms\, regulated cook book care\, and seeking reimbursements.\nIn a DPC practice\, you are opting out of the insurance and government systems and you will join the rising tide of thousands of doctors resurrecting their calling to care.\nThese doctors are embracing a practice model that ends the endless data entry and gives you the time to know your patients\, listen\, reflect\, and deliver quality care – all within a business model that generates revenue commensurate with the years you invested in your training to become a physician. \nThis conference is provided by Docs4Patient Care Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Beth Haynes\, MD\, BRI medical director participated in the Conference for Global Transformation\,  a 3-day international event held in Monterey\, CA. Her poster\, Clichés\, Memes\, and Euphemisms in Healthcare was accepted for exhibit in a main hall and was designed to promote and foster open dialogue and communication about healthcare. \nThe poster’s purpose:\n“Far too often we use words without clarity. Or\, we assume our meaning is the same as other’s. At other times\, we use words to signal rather than to deepen understanding or participate in shared inquiry. In politics especially\, this is frequently the case. And yet\, our best chance at inventing solutions which heal rather than divide is through authentic communication. As a first step in up-grading our conversations\, please help me identify explore the clichés\, memes and euphemisms in our current debate over healthcare\, and maybe even create 5th field conversations in the world of Adult as Possibility.” ~Dr. Beth Haynes \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 750 people attended The Conference for Global Transformation\, an international event with the purpose of exploring ways people can work together to improve themselves and the state of the world. \nFrom Dr. Beth Haynes: \nMy poster invited participants to examine the way in which we use language as we engage in the healthcare debate. \nWhich words invite and which shut down meaningful discourse? Which words are used without clear or mutually agreed upon definitions? What can we do/say to improve understanding and communication\, rather than continuing to talk past one another? \nOver the course of two hours\, I was able stimulate dialogue on how we can upgrade our healthcare policy conversations—both as individuals and as a nation. Conference attendees’ political leaning is generally quite liberal\, so this was a fabulous opportunity to make the case for the importance of including alternative perspectives in deliberations about the future of healthcare in the US and throughout the world. \nI was able to connect with several physicians\, all of whom are active at their local level\, and are either searching for or working to create better solutions. \nI also connected with the founder of Civic Series\, a non-profit aimed at educating young adults about important issues facing the world. Thus far the series has reached out to and engaged millennials primarily from a liberal perspective\, but the founder is genuinely interested in engaging individuals from a broad range of perspectives. In addition to offering to assist her with identifying conservative/libertarian speakers\, I will be connecting her with America’s Future Foundation so the two organizations can look at how they can collaborate. \nOverall\, the poster was well received and generated thoughtful conversations about how to best approach the challenge of improving healthcare policy.”

For application details\, click here. \nThis year’s theme: Ethics of the Patient-Doctor Relationship. At BRI’s 2018 Student Leadership Conference\, we will explore the ethics of the patient-doctor relationship and dig deeply into who is responsible for which aspects of this relationship\, and what is the proper and fitting role of government in this relationship. \nThis year’s conference offers two sessions open to the public!\nSession #1 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday\, 3/9 Luncheon Keynote: Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past | REGISTER\nSession #2 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday evening Panel Discussion: Are the Tenets of Social Justice Compatible with the Ethical Requirements of the Patient – Doctor Relationship? | REGISTER \nThroughout the conference\, we will address today’s pressing questions:\nWhat are the ethical requirements related to patient confidentiality—and how do mandates like HIPAA and EHRs affect them?\nIs healthcare a right? (e.g. single-payer or Medicare for All)\nTo whom does a doctor owe loyalty? An employer or insurance contract\, government (“state”) rules\, or the patient?\nWhat happens when regulations\, government policy\, and other third parties insert their priorities into medical decision making?\nHow does the concept of “social justice” affect the patient-doctor relationship? \nThere are examples throughout history where blatant disregard for medical ethics and the patient-doctor relationship are obvious and egregious—The Third Reich and today’s Communist China are just two examples.
