SUMMARY:Direct Primary Care CONFERENCE 2018*
DESCRIPTION:This conference trains physicians to start or expand a direct primary care practice (DPC) that is based on the private patient to doctor relationship. Through recurring payments (monthly\, quarterly\, or annually)\, patients “contract” directly with their doctor for care for a low fixed fee. \nBy unshackling physicians from paperwork\, bureaucracy\, and reimbursements\, DPC cuts out the middleman to free the doctor’s clinical judgment and create pricing all can afford.\nDPC: A Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice ends the obligation to third party payers and the endless fights with forms\, regulated cook book care\, and seeking reimbursements.\nIn a DPC practice\, you are opting out of the insurance and government systems and you will join the rising tide of thousands of doctors resurrecting their calling to care.\nThese doctors are embracing a practice model that ends the endless data entry and gives you the time to know your patients\, listen\, reflect\, and deliver quality care – all within a business model that generates revenue commensurate with the years you invested in your training to become a physician. \nThis conference is provided by Docs4Patient Care Foundation. To apply for one of the BRI scholarships\, please complete this form. \n

SUMMARY:Conference on Global Transformation: POSTER PRESENTATION with Beth Haynes\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Beth Haynes\, MD\, BRI medical director participated in the Conference for Global Transformation\,  a 3-day international event held in Monterey\, CA. Her poster\, Clichés\, Memes\, and Euphemisms in Healthcare was accepted for exhibit in a main hall and was designed to promote and foster open dialogue and communication about healthcare. \nThe poster’s purpose:\n“Far too often we use words without clarity. Or\, we assume our meaning is the same as other’s. At other times\, we use words to signal rather than to deepen understanding or participate in shared inquiry. In politics especially\, this is frequently the case. And yet\, our best chance at inventing solutions which heal rather than divide is through authentic communication. As a first step in up-grading our conversations\, please help me identify explore the clichés\, memes and euphemisms in our current debate over healthcare\, and maybe even create 5th field conversations in the world of Adult as Possibility.” ~Dr. Beth Haynes \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 750 people attended The Conference for Global Transformation\, an international event with the purpose of exploring ways people can work together to improve themselves and the state of the world. \nFrom Dr. Beth Haynes: \nMy poster invited participants to examine the way in which we use language as we engage in the healthcare debate. \nWhich words invite and which shut down meaningful discourse? Which words are used without clear or mutually agreed upon definitions? What can we do/say to improve understanding and communication\, rather than continuing to talk past one another? \nOver the course of two hours\, I was able stimulate dialogue on how we can upgrade our healthcare policy conversations—both as individuals and as a nation. Conference attendees’ political leaning is generally quite liberal\, so this was a fabulous opportunity to make the case for the importance of including alternative perspectives in deliberations about the future of healthcare in the US and throughout the world. \nI was able to connect with several physicians\, all of whom are active at their local level\, and are either searching for or working to create better solutions. \nI also connected with the founder of Civic Series\, a non-profit aimed at educating young adults about important issues facing the world. Thus far the series has reached out to and engaged millennials primarily from a liberal perspective\, but the founder is genuinely interested in engaging individuals from a broad range of perspectives. In addition to offering to assist her with identifying conservative/libertarian speakers\, I will be connecting her with America’s Future Foundation so the two organizations can look at how they can collaborate. \nOverall\, the poster was well received and generated thoughtful conversations about how to best approach the challenge of improving healthcare policy.”

SUMMARY:2018 BRI Student Leadership Conference\, Columbus\, OH
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS TO APPLY TO THE CONFERENCE IS OPEN! For application details\, click here. \nThis year’s theme: Ethics of the Patient-Doctor Relationship. At BRI’s 2018 Student Leadership Conference\, we will explore the ethics of the patient-doctor relationship and dig deeply into who is responsible for which aspects of this relationship\, and what is the proper and fitting role of government in this relationship. \nThis year’s conference offers two sessions open to the public!\nSession #1 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday\, 3/9 Luncheon Keynote: Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past | REGISTER\nSession #2 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday evening Panel Discussion: Are the Tenets of Social Justice Compatible with the Ethical Requirements of the Patient – Doctor Relationship? | REGISTER \nThroughout the conference\, we will address today’s pressing questions:\nWhat are the ethical requirements related to patient confidentiality—and how do mandates like HIPAA and EHRs affect them?\nIs healthcare a right? (e.g. single-payer or Medicare for All)\nTo whom does a doctor owe loyalty? An employer or insurance contract\, government (“state”) rules\, or the patient?\nWhat happens when regulations\, government policy\, and other third parties insert their priorities into medical decision making?\nHow does the concept of “social justice” affect the patient-doctor relationship? \nThere are examples throughout history where blatant disregard for medical ethics and the patient-doctor relationship are obvious and egregious—The Third Reich and today’s Communist China are just two examples. But what about when interference in the patient-doctor relationship is more subtle? What about ‘rationing\,’ and ‘the greater good?’ \nWe have an exciting lineup of speakers for you\, including Drs. Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, Bob Emmons\, Raul Atal\, Sameer Lakha\, Twila Brase\, RN—and more! We are also doing something a little different this year—we’re opening up Friday’s luncheon Keynote session to the greater OSU student body\, as well as the standard Friday night panel discussion. \nIt’s going to be a GREAT conference. You won’t want to miss it. \nBRI STUDENT LEADERS! Hold events\, event\, events so your chapter can win an award to send an extra student or two to the conference!\n2018 Leadership Conference Application\n2018 Leadership Conference web page

SUMMARY:2017 BRI Leadership Conference in Saint Louis\, MO
DESCRIPTION:Healing Our Healers Through the\nPatient-Doctor Relationship\nDoctors are called upon to treat the sickest of the sick\, often in conditions that demand the most of the strongest human beings. Yet\, even in America with some of the best medical conditions in the world\, doctors are still called upon to serve\, heal\, and respond—over and over again—usually with no thought for their own well-being\, endurance\, or limitations. \nMedical students are also found in similar situations: forced to the brink of their mental\, emotional\, and physical capacity\, to study\, learn and perform on cue . . . and they do this because they want to serve people. \nSo\, how do we take care of our doctors and medical students? Based on the sheer number of healthcare professionals who drop out of school\, out of their practices\, or —worse yet\, out of life itself through suicide—the answer is: not well at all. \nBesides the vast medical knowledge doctors and medical student must learn and retain\, there is the new additional burden of onerous government regulation\, sapping autonomy and joy from the medical profession. We say\, it’s time to heal our healers\, and the best way to do that is to protect one of the most sacred relationships: that of patient and doctor. When doctors are free to practice\, to make choices that serve them and their patients rather than bureaucracy\, and take action in the best interest of their patients\, they in turn are the most fulfilled and happy. \nAt the Benjamin Rush Institute annual student leadership conference\, we will present concrete\, workable and proven ways to improve healthcare for all\, and above all\, heal our healers through the patient-doctor relationship. \nBRI is proud to bring you\nBRI-Leadership Conference 2017.\nThursday evening\, February 2nd through Sunday noon\, February 5th\, 2017.\nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS CLOSED. SUMMARY:SPN 23rd Annual Meeting\, Grand Rapids\, MI
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, moderated a Docs 4 Patient Care panel on health policy in a breakout session. CON laws and other aspects of healthcare policy were discussed. \nFrom the SPNAM.org official website: The SPN Annual Meeting started in 1993 in Traverse City\, Michigan. A dozen people met in a room with the hope of building a robust network of state think tanks throughout the country. Today\, the SPN Annual Meeting brings together over 900 people from around the country\, including state and national leaders\, influencers\, and professionals. \nWe believe that being good enough is not enough to win in the rapidly evolving political environment. We can’t afford to be outgunned\, outmanned and outspent. The future of the country depends on it. \nThat is why the State Policy Network has hosted the Annual Meeting for 23 years running. \nThis year\, the Annual Meeting is returning to the state where it all started. Freedom fighters will gather in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, with an intentional focus on developing the solutions and skills to advance freedom at both the state and national level. Through the lens of our 2015 theme – Experience Freedom – we will consider ways to sharpen our solutions and strategies and help our core audiences envision their need for freedom. We will inspire and challenge ourselves to give Americans opportunities to experience the benefits of freedom to their everyday lives. \nThe program focuses on building leaders\, refining operations\, cultivating excellent communication and outreach strategies\, analyzing policy priorities and training top-notch fundraisers. The SPN Annual Meeting is also the only outlet where state and national leaders can chart collaborative strategies together. SPN purposefully creates an environment to facilitate connections and build coalitions.

SUMMARY:Day of Solidarity: Bringing awareness to the physician and medical student suicide epidemic
DESCRIPTION:Prevent Physician Suicide Click here to see the schedule for an event near you. \nImagine your excitement as a parent getting ready to attend your child’s graduation from medical school. Instead\, you attend his funeral–yet another medical student suicide victim. And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Ashley Maltz\, MD and Pamela Wible\, MD:\n\n\n“Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That’s the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide–a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What About the Poor? How to Win the Healthcare Debate Without Selling Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.
