SUMMARY:SUNY Downstate — Film Screening: Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:We will be screening “Poverty\, Inc.” — a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. All are welcome\, and please contact Mary Hahn in advance if you are planning to attend this event. SUNY Downstate is a secure campus\, and she will need to coordinate to meet with you if you are not a student or faculty member at SUNY. \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nThis event is generously supported by Benjamin Rush Institute\, SUNY Med Council\, and University Council. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: In spite of having to hold the movie screening at 5pm when many students simply want to head home (as opposed to showing it at lunch time)\, 20 students joined us to view Poverty\, Inc.\, and several remained for a short discussion following. We served food\, generously funded by Med Council at SUNY Downstate. \n“Thank you for hosting this! It was very interesting!” ~Student attendee\, SUNY Downstate \n“Thanks for organizing. Def an interesting short documentary.” ~Student attendee\, SUNY Downstate

SUMMARY:Dartmouth College\, Geisel School of Medicine: Movie Screening — Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: Fighting Poverty is Big Business; but who profits the most?\n \nThe entire Dartmouth community is invited to join us on Tuesday December 15th at 6pm for dinner and a free showing of the new\, award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc.\, hosted by the TDI/Geisel Critical Issues Discussion Group. \nThe number of people existing on less than $2 a day has been reduced by 80% since 1970. This astounding accomplishment is not the result of foreign aid\, or any other type of wealth redistribution. Development economists credit free enterprise and the rule of law with the lifting of 2 billion human beings out of absolute poverty. And as these people become wealthier\, they also become healthier. \nWhat can we learn from this accomplishment that we can apply to the US? Join us to see one side of the story you may not have thought about before. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twelve very interested students attended the full movie version screening\, with a half hour of discussion and Q&A following. \nJared Rhoads of Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine\, had this to say about his event:\n“Hosting a movie night is a great idea for a BRI chapter event that is relatively easy to organize\, yet still impactful. The film offers a critical look at humanitarian aid efforts\, strongly but subtly arguing that markets and political freedom are often more effective at helping people rise out of poverty and achieve prosperity than plain charity. The film does not focus specifically on health\, but it was nevertheless a perfect selection for our public health students\, who were in the middle of their fall semester course on the social determinants of health.”

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine — Movie Night: "Wait Till It's Free" Documentary Review & Dinner
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the central time zone. Visitor Parking is in Hickory East Parking Garage\, 3424 Hickory Street\, St. Louis\, MO \n \nAll are welcome to BRI-Saint Louis’s first official BRI event! Dinner will be provided while we offer a showing of the acclaimed documentary “Wait Till It’s Free.” We also plan to leave plenty of time after the viewing to discuss the documentary and talk about what we may or may not agree with in the film. Click on the icon above to view the first 20 minutes of the film\, free. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 21 students attended. After a quick introduction and reminder of upcoming BRI events/deadlines\, students ate Thai food and watched the documentary “Wait Till It’s Free.” After the film was over\, students stayed for an additional 30 minutes to discuss. \nThe discussion started with a summary of general thoughts and questions about the film. Some students were curious what the essential differences between the Canadian and British systems were. Other students were confused about how Samaritan Ministries worked. In general\, we had an open and balanced discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the documentary. \nMost of the students thought that the documentary had very good points to make\, but was unbalanced. This is to be expected from a documentary\, however\, and we discussed possibly showing an alternative documentary such as “Sicko” by Michael Moore. The students were very grateful for the event and many expressed interest in coming to more events! \nTESTIMONIALS & FEEDBACK gathered from attendees:\n“Keep hosting events. These are great opportunities to think about how we provide care and even though most physicians get into medicine to help people these conversations illuminate our actual ability to fully help patients.” \n“I would like to hear more about what BRI is doing in bringing changes to the healthcare system.” \n“I would like to see the other side of the documentary presented\, with someone arguing for a single payer system and against capitalism in health care.” \n
