SUMMARY:BRI Virtual Event Series with Antonio Ciaccia - "The role of PBMs in healthcare today"
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Ciaccia of 46brooklyn Research joins Benjamin Rush Institute to talk about the role PBMs have\, and should have\, in today’s healthcare on Thursday\, January 6\, 2022\, at 12pm ET. Space is limited – Register NOW. \nBorn and raised in pharmacy\, Antonio has been crawling around pharmacies his entire life. After three years as a pharmacy technician and two years of pre-pharmacy curriculum\, Antonio diverted course\, graduating from The Ohio State University in 2007 with dual degrees in communications and political science before moving into the world of association management. \nThinking that pharmacy would be in his rear-view mirror forever\, he ended up making his way back to his pharmacy home\, heading up government affairs for the Ohio Pharmacists Association\, a trade organization with a strong track record of advocating for drug pricing transparency. After years of studying the pharmacy marketplace\, Antonio became increasingly perplexed and concerned as he saw drug costs spiking while payouts to pharmacies were declining. \nKnowing something was being lost somewhere in the middle of an ever-growing transaction\, Antonio has spent years working to crack the drug pricing code and pull the rug out from what he believes is one of the most dysfunctional marketplaces in the world. \nRegister NOW.

SUMMARY:University of Delaware—SKYPE INTERVIEW: Dr. Keith Smith on Direct Pay Surgery
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Keith Smith\, founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma and pioneer in free market medical practice.\nAll are welcome to join Young Americans for Liberty and the UDel chapter of Benjamin Rush Institute for a Skype interview with Dr. Keith Smith\, founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. Dr. Smith will explain how his cash-based surgery practice operates. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Ten students attended the lecture. Dr. Smith explained how his cash-based surgery center works. He answered questions pertaining to what he does during a normal day\, how his surgery center is better than a hospital\, how it is to a doctor’s advantage to work there\, what happens when there is a surgical mistake\, what the greatest weakness is in the cash-based movement\, and how he sees the future of cash-based medicine. At the end\, he explained how the medical industry has become cartelized. \n“The event went very well. Dr. Smith did a great job explaining his practice to non-medical students who have very little background in how the medical system operates.” ~Zach Howell\, BRI-UDel chapter founder and president \n“The Skype talk with Dr. Keith Smith was a great opportunity for our chapter. We got to hear from someone was knowledgeable and experienced in a free market solution to medical care. To talk to a doctor who has hands on experience running a surgery center that does not accept insurance or any handouts from the government is very enlightening. It’s easy to talk about what could work in theory\, but Dr. Keith Smith made it a reality. He proved that there is a way to make medical care more affordable. Also\, he was just really great to talk to. He was very friendly and answered all of our questions.” ~Connor McGinley\, University of Delaware Junior International Relations and Spanish Studies Major
