SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine—DISCUSSION: "End of Discussion" with authors Guy Benson and Mary Katharine Ham
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this discussion session with authors Guy Benson and Mary Katharine Ham\, sponsored by the BRI chapter at SLU. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided. Please RSVP via the website link\, below. \nAuthors Guy Benson and Mary Katharine Ham will discuss the topics in their book “End of Discussion: How the Left’s Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate\, Manipulates Voters\, and Makes America Less Free (and Fun).” \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Guest Speakers: \n \nGuy Benson is the political editor of Townhall.com and a Fox News contributor. He was named to Forbes magazine’s 30 under 30 law & policy list in 2015. The Huffington Post included him in its 2017 roster of the 25 top millennial broadcasters in American news and politics. That same year\, he received the College Republican National Committee’s biannual Lee Atwater Outstanding Young Conservative award. Guy served as a Media Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution\, and a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. \n \nMary Katharine Ham is an American journalist and conservative commentator. She is editor at large of Hot Air\, a contributing editor to Townhall Magazine\, senior writer at The Federalist\, and a CNN contributor. At CPAC 2014\, she was presented with the ACU Blogger of the Year award. She was previously a Fox News contributor. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five SLU students attended this event. BRI-SLU president Tony Mazzaferro began with an introduction to BRI and its goals and mission\, then introduced the speakers. \nGuy Benson started off by talking about why he and Ms. Ham decided to write their book\, End of Discussion\, and what they hoped to accomplish with it. He touched on the hyperbolic rhetoric that entrenches American politics and how we need to avoid this. Guy spoke to the importance of free speech\, honest debate\, and the open exploration of ideas. Too often our demonization of opposing viewpoints hinders our ability to have productive conversation. Guy is a good speaker\, engaging\, and entertaining. The audience seemed to be enjoying his talk. \nHe and Mary Katharine took questions from the audience. People seemed very engaged and eager to ask questions. It was a good time! \nGuy and Mary Katharine were exactly like I hoped – they presented a case for conservative/free-market ideas but did so in a friendly\, agreeable manner. No on in the room\, whether liberal/conservative/libertarian\, etc. was offended by them. They were likable and entertaining. I personally had three faculty members at the med school thank me for organizing the event and felt the topic was important to discuss and that the med school needs more events like this. They loved it!” ~Tony Mazzaferro\, BRI-SLU chapter president and event organizer \n“The talk was very informative and eye-opening. The speakers were straight forward\, critical of both sides\, provided good examples that supported their ideas\, and kept the talk light-hearted by injecting great jokes.” – Kevin N.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“I really enjoyed the presentation organized by the Benjamin Rush Institute. Those leading the meeting were knowledgeable and could discuss the vital issues present in our current political and healthcare environment. I will be attending future BRI activities.” – Scott S.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“The BRI event was a great experience. The speakers were professional yet entertaining and I feel that I gained valuable\, practical knowledge about policy debates.” Alan P.\, M1 SLUSOM

SUMMARY:Ohio University College of Medicine-Dublin—PRESENTATION: House Calls and the Pre-Penicillin Era to Targeted Chemotherapy: A 75-Year Walk Through Medical History
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this event. Please RSVP within 48 hours of the event to ensure enough food. If you do not have permissions to use the RSVP URL\, please email Jacob directly. There is ample parking in front of medical education building one: 6775 Bobcat way\, Dublin\, Ohio 43016 \nDr. Harold Chevlen\, MD\, a 95-year old retired physician who practiced independent family medicine for 50 years in Youngstown\, Ohio\, will be discussing the changes that occurred throughout his career. In particular he’ll describe how things most medical students take for granted\, such as antibiotics revolutionized his practice of medicine. He will also talk about the joys of family medicine. \n  \nHis speech will be followed by his son\, Dr. Eric Chevlen MD\, a medical oncologist in Youngstown\, OH\, who will talk about the innovations that have occurred during his career in cancer care. Dr. Chevlen is the author of Power over Pain: How to Get the Pain Control You Need\, and contributed “Confessions of a Health Care Rationer” to the website\, First Things. \nBoth speeches will describe technological\, scientific\, and social changes to medicine over the past 75 years. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-two students and faculty attended this lecture. Doctors Harold and Eric Chevlen spoke about the changes they encountered\, both within the practice of clinical medicine and within themselves over the course of their careers. \nIn particular\, Dr. Harold Chevlen described starting his own private practice\, serving in the US army as a hospital orderly\, doing house calls throughout Northeastern Ohio\, and the joys of independent family medicine. He talked about the changes in medicine such as the introduction of penicillin\, and sweeping societal changes such as the desegregation of hospitals throughout Ohio. \nDr. Eric Chevlen described his motivations in becoming a physician\, the dramatic improvements in chemotherapy he witnessed over his career\, what it was like practicing oncology for the NIH in rural Egypt\, being the first physician to ever perform a marrow biopsy there\, ethics of DNR orders\, and the introduction of cephalosporins during his schooling. \n“The event went better than I expected! The audience didn’t even look at their phones once. Questions went about 45 minutes beyond the scheduled end of the event. The greatest single argument for independent medical practice is the joy independent doctors exude. Dr. Harold Chevlen painted a beautiful picture of what medicine used to be like–prior to government meddling–where independent family doctors weren’t just clinicians\, but also members of the family. \nI believe that demonstrating how awesome family medicine can be\, unfettered by paper work\, will encourage more people into this underserved field. The next step is obviously teaching about DPC.” ~Jacob Chevlen\, event organizer

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University—DISCUSSION: Healthcare Policy Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:ALL are welcome to attend BRI-SLU’s first meeting of the year! Come find out about our work to preserve medical freedom for all doctors\, while providing solutions to keeping healthcare affordable\, accessible and of high quality for patients. We are America’s only free market healthcare oriented organization specifically for medical students. \nAs a medical student\, what are your concerns about healthcare policy? Didn’t know you should be concerned? This meeting is for you! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five (mostly M1 and M2) students participated in our first meeting of the year. We held an open-ended discussion about relevant topics in healthcare today\, such as where students see barriers in access to care\, concerns they have with bureaucracy in healthcare\, and past events BRI has held at SLU. We started the meeting with a 5-10 minute powerpoint about BRI\, then divided the room into 3 separate discussion groups. Students were very interested in hearing more about direct primary care (such as Atlas MD/ Josh Umbehr)\, learning how the ACA has changed or increased patients’ out-of-pocket costs\, what can we learn from other national healthcare systems (positives and negatives)\, and what are possible alternatives to the ACA.

SUMMARY:University of California\, Irvine School of Medicine—PANEL DISCUSSION: Direct Primary Care and Its Relevance for Medical Students
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a discussion with Dr. Emilie Scott & Dr. James Gaor of Halcyon Health. What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)\, and how is it relevant to medical students? Dr. Scott will speak about her primary care practice\, which uses the direct primary care business model. In this model\, patients pay an initial enrollment fee and then a monthly fee for primary care services. We think you’ll want to know about this non-traditional and expanding method of delivering quality\, affordable care without insurance companies or government middlemen getting between patients and doctors. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-one (31) interested students and members of the UC-Irvine community came to the meeting\, underscoring the great interest and draw this topic has for medical students. Dr. Scott and her husband\, Dr. Gaor\, provided an amazing platform to openly discuss her practice\, story and passion for her patients. \nWe also had the chance to talk about the Primary Care practice modeled as a non-profit\, so that can all patients have access: those who can pay\, those with limited ability to pay\, or those who are uninsured\, or even undocumented or lack ongoing access to quality care.

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine @Mt. Sinai—PANEL DISCUSSION: Prescription For Value—Keeping Innovation Affordable For Patients
DESCRIPTION:Prescription-drug prices continue to seize headlines this election season. Recent drug-pricing scandals—involving EpiPen and Daraprim\, older medicines used to treat asthma and malaria\, respectively\, as well as high list prices for new medicines to counter hepatitis C and cholesterol—seem to offer ammunition to critics who charge that drug manufacturers prioritize profits over patients. \nBut how are drug prices in the U.S. actually determined? Are the forces of competition being fully harnessed to yield positive results for patients? And how is high-deductible insurance\, accelerating fast under Obamacare\, affecting access to critical medicines? \nFederal drug regulations greatly influence drug-pricing decisions: for example\, they mandate deep discounts for public-insurance programs\, such as Medicaid\, but can also discourage drug manufacturers from entering into innovative “pay-for-performance” contracts with private health insurers. Other regulations limit manufacturers’ ability to exchange useful information with insurers and health-care providers—information that could lead to better patient outcomes at lower cost. FDA regulations reduce competition\, too\, driving up the time it takes new medicines to reach market. \nPlease join Manhattan Institute for a health-care symposium\, as distinguished experts discuss the forces driving drug pricing in America—and explore promising new approaches for making medicines more affordable for patients. \nSPEAKERS: \nPaul Howard\, Director and Senior Fellow\, Health Policy\, Manhattan Institute\nMr. Howard is a contributor to The Apothecary\, the Forbes blog on health care policy and entitlement reform\, and a regular columnist for The Morning Consult. SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai—PANEL DISCUSSION: Transforming Outpatient Medicine
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join BRI-Icahn and Primary Care Progress for this panel discussion presentation on transforming outpatient medicine. We will be hearing from three speakers who will each give a 10-15 minute “TED” style talk about how their practices are transforming outpatient medicine and primary care. \nSPEAKERS: \nFidela Chiang\, NP\, Institute for Family Health | School-based medicine\nRobin Berzin\, MD\, Parsley Health | Concierge practice focusing on individualized medicine \n  \n  \n  \nAndy Coyle\, MD\, Asst. professor of Medicine\, General Internal Medicine\, and Medical Education\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai | Dr. Coyle focuses on homeless medicine \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Co-sponsored with Primary Care Progress\, twenty (20) students attended this event. Fidela Chiang started us off discussing school-based healthcare in New York. She described how this was a way of capturing young people who may not otherwise receive comprehensive primary care. Particularly for adolescence\, it is a unique opportunity to provide sexual and reproductive health care. \nNext up was Dr. Andy Coyle\, who described the homeless health care practice at Mt. Sinai. Of particular interest was the cost-benefit analysis that showed homeless persons who seek care at the ED constitute a significant cost burden to hospitals\, as well as a suboptimal way of receiving care. He talked about how difficult it is to engage these patients and how their practice can reduce health care costs and provide better care than the traditional large\, bureaucratic system. \nLastly\, Dr. Robin Berzin talked about the direct primary care group practice she created called Parsley Health. They provide concierge health care and were able to design a brand new system from the ground up. This allowed her to truly care for patients without worrying about insurance\, government mandates\, or regulations from large hospital systems. She is able to focus on caring for individual patients holistically and practice precision medicine without these 3rd party constraints. Although the direct model is currently very expensive\, the idea is to design a brand new system that can then be “mass-produced” to the larger public. Working within a flawed system will not yield the necessary results\, so Dr. Berzin created her own system.

SUMMARY:Georgetown University — PANEL DISCUSSION: How to preserve your conscience while practicing medicine
DESCRIPTION:How to preserve your conscience while practicing medicine\nPlease join us for refreshments and a free lecture with two outstanding people in their fields. Dr. Paul Kempen and Matt Bowman\, Esq. will be speaking to medical students about how they can strive to maintain their conscience once they are practicing physicians. During the course of a medical career it is inevitable that a physician will be put in a position that may violate their conscience. Understanding how to handle such a situation and understanding how to practice medicine such that you do not violate your conscience is vital for future physicians. \nMatthew S. Bowman\, Esq.\, serves as senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom\, where he is a key member of the Center for Life. Bowman has focused his legal efforts on promoting a culture of life\, leading the fight against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate that forces employers to provide employees with healthcare coverage that includes early abortion items and birth control in violation of their religious convictions. \n  \n  \nDr. Paul Kempen attended medical school in Freiburg\, Germany in the 1980’s and is a practicing Anesthesiologist in Cleveland\, OH. He currently practices at The Cleveland Clinic and is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kempen is board certified in Anesthesiology and also practices at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Anesthesiology in Lorain\, OH. \n  \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: BRI-Georgetown and the Catholic Medical Association sponsored this presentation for 25 interested medical students\, faculty and staff. Dr. Kempen spoke on medical ethics providing examples of what he and other doctors have encountered in the realm of ethical concerns while practicing medicine. He made sure to explain that it is always wise to choose your ethical battles carefully\, and that ethical consults are always available\, even to medical students. On the other hand\, Matt Bowman spoke on medical ethics with a thesis of “doctor autonomy enables patient choice.” Mr. Bowman reasoned that forcing all doctors to practice medicine as the government or medical elite see fit reduces patient choices. For example\, some patients who may be pro-life may have a desire only to receive care from doctors who are also pro-life. \n \n“Both speakers were excellent.” ~Second year medical student\n“Mr. Bowman had a very well reasoned and logical presentation.” ~Second year medical student

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University—PANEL: Comparing Healthcare Policies in an Election Year
DESCRIPTION:What exact healthcare policies are the 2016 presidential candidates proposing?\nPlease join us for lunch and refreshments as BRI officers present the various 2016 presidential candidates’ healthcare policies and plans. A Q&A and small group discussion will follow. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Three SLU-BRI chapter officers\, Alex Wisbeck\, Erick Sink\, and Kevin Huynh presented the 2016 Republican and Democratic presidential candidates’ healthcare plans to 28 mostly first year medical school attendees at this pizza lunch meeting. The presentation lasted 30 minutes\, which left 20 minutes for questions. \nFellow students were interested in the presentation\, and as a result we had quite a few questions about the candidates’ specific policies and also about healthcare policy in general. \n“I thought that this lunch discussion went very well. My fellow junior officers and I learned a bit while researching the candidates. Also\, because we left a lot of time for questions and because our presentation was delivered as peers and not as an expert panel\, we felt that many more questions were asked and elaborated upon. I think this type of set up facilitates discussions with medical students\, especially those who are relatively new to topics in healthcare policy and may be hesitant to speak up in other settings.” ~Kevin Huynh\, presenter and BRI chapter officer

SUMMARY:University of Louisville School of Medicine—Town Hall: Healthcare panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event occurs in the eastern time zone. \nAll are welcome to University of Louisville’s first BRI event of the academic year. We are extremely pleased to bring you three renowned healthcare experts—each focusing on a different area of specialty and addressing a variety of concerns. We will allow plenty of time for Q&A. \nFood will be served. RSVPs are appreciated! \nMatt Bevin\, Republican Candidate for KY Governor will discuss his ideas about healthcare solutions for Kentucky. [NOTE: In keeping with BRI’s 501(c)3 status\, this is not an endorsement or political event.] \n  \n \nDr. Josh Umbehr\, AtlasMD has long been a proponent of transparent pricing and free market solutions to healthcare delivery. A speaker at BRI’s 2015 Leadership Conference in Washington\, DC.\, “Dr. Josh” is a favorite speaker for those seeking to understand how free markets best serve everyone—doctors\, patients\, and the underserved. \nAkash Chougule\, Deputy Director of Policy at Americans For Prosperity will discuss his extensive research into the ACA\, including non-partisan findings that confirms the fears and predictions that many people have had since the introduction of President Obama’s healthcare law. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Over 100 students and faculty attended BRI’s first University of Louisville event of 2015\, where they heard Dr. Josh Umbehr discuss his concierge family practice and the Concierge Medicine Revolution\, Mr. Matt Bevin speak about healthcare in Kentucky\, and Akash Chougule present healthcare facts and figures from Americans for Prosperity and the CBO. \n\nThe event concluded with a panel discussion and audience Q&A. This event provided an incredible amount of information on healthcare. The audience asked very thoughtful questions for 30 minutes. SUMMARY:The Heritage Foundation—Panel Discussion: The ICD-10’s Costly and Complex Burden on Doctors and Patients
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place EST. \nWe strongly encourage you to attend this panel discussion on the new ICD-10 regulations coming imminently to doctors and physicians throughout healthcare. Sponsored by The Heritage Foundation\, a long-time BRI ally and partner in the fight to preserve the doctor-patient relationship\, the panel features Dr. Robert Moffit\, a favorite speaker in BRI’s Speakers Bureau\, and BRI’s very own student leader and past Heritage Foundation Intern\, John Grimsley (BRI-Georgetown)\, who has contributed enormously to this discussion\, and others. \nOn October 1\, 2015\, a new standardized system of classifying disease\, the ICD-10\, will be imposed on practicing physicians and others in the health care sector. Since the 1980s\, the U.S. has conflated the disparate goals of research and reimbursement by linking the ICD codes to payments for health care. This unwise policy will be compounded by replacing the current ICD-9 with the newer and vastly more complex ICD-10. Adoption of the ICD-10 comes with significant costs and trade-offs. This unfunded mandate not only perpetuates a misguided policy decision that confuses the disparate goals of research and reimbursement\, but also adds significant financial and administrative burdens on physicians and other health care providers. \nJoin us as our panelists discuss their research and insight on this critical issue.\nFeaturing \nStephen F. Hayes \nColumnist\, The Weekly Standard \nModerating a Discussion with\nJohn Grimsley \nM.D. Candidate\, Georgetown University\, Class of 2018 \nGerald Harmon\, M.D. \nAmerican Medical Association Trustee\, Board of Trustees \nJohn S.
