DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a discussion with Dr. Emilie Scott & Dr. James Gaor of Halcyon Health. What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)\, and how is it relevant to medical students? Dr. Scott will speak about her primary care practice\, which uses the direct primary care business model. In this model\, patients pay an initial enrollment fee and then a monthly fee for primary care services.We think you’ll want to know about this non-traditional and expanding method of delivering quality\, affordable care without insurance companies or government middlemen getting between patients and doctors. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-one (31) interested students and members of the UC-Irvine community came to the meeting\, underscoring the great interest and draw this topic has for medical students. Dr. Scott and her husband\, Dr. Gaor\, provided an amazing platform to openly discuss her practice\, story and passion for her patients. \nWe also had the chance to talk about the Primary Care practice modeled as a non-profit\, so that can all patients have access: those who can pay\, those with limited ability to pay\, or those who are uninsured\, or even undocumented or lack ongoing access to quality care.

DESCRIPTION:Prescription-drug prices continue to seize headlines this election season. Recent drug-pricing scandals—involving EpiPen and Daraprim\, older medicines used to treat asthma and malaria\, respectively\, as well as high list prices for new medicines to counter hepatitis C and cholesterol—seem to offer ammunition to critics who charge that drug manufacturers prioritize profits over patients. \nBut how are drug prices in the U.S. actually determined? Are the forces of competition being fully harnessed to yield positive results for patients? And how is high-deductible insurance\, accelerating fast under Obamacare\, affecting access to critical medicines? \nFederal drug regulations greatly influence drug-pricing decisions: for example\, they mandate deep discounts for public-insurance programs\, such as Medicaid\, but can also discourage drug manufacturers from entering into innovative “pay-for-performance” contracts with private health insurers. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join BRI-Icahn and Primary Care Progress for this panel discussion presentation on transforming outpatient medicine. We will be hearing from three speakers who will each give a 10-15 minute “TED” style talk about how their practices are transforming outpatient medicine and primary care. \nSPEAKERS: \nFidela Chiang\, NP\, Institute for Family Health | School-based medicine\nRobin Berzin\, MD\, Parsley Health | Concierge practice focusing on individualized medicine \n  \n  \n  \nAndy Coyle\, MD\, Asst. professor of Medicine\, General Internal Medicine\, and Medical Education\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai | Dr. Coyle focuses on homeless medicine \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Co-sponsored with Primary Care Progress\, twenty (20) students attended this event. Fidela Chiang started us off discussing school-based healthcare in New York. She described how this was a way of capturing young people who may not otherwise receive comprehensive primary care. Particularly for adolescence\, it is a unique opportunity to provide sexual and reproductive health care. \nNext up was Dr. Andy Coyle\, who described the homeless health care practice at Mt. Sinai. Of particular interest was the cost-benefit analysis that showed homeless persons who seek care at the ED constitute a significant cost burden to hospitals\, as well as a suboptimal way of receiving care. He talked about how difficult it is to engage these patients and how their practice can reduce health care costs and provide better care than the traditional large\, bureaucratic system. \nLastly\, Dr. Robin Berzin talked about the direct primary care group practice she created called Parsley Health. They provide concierge health care and were able to design a brand new system from the ground up. This allowed her to truly care for patients without worrying about insurance\, government mandates\, or regulations from large hospital systems. She is able to focus on caring for individual patients holistically and practice precision medicine without these 3rd party constraints. Although the direct model is currently very expensive\, the idea is to design a brand new system that can then be “mass-produced” to the larger public. Working within a flawed system will not yield the necessary results\, so Dr. Berzin created her own system.

DESCRIPTION:How to preserve your conscience while practicing medicine\nPlease join us for refreshments and a free lecture with two outstanding people in their fields. Dr. Paul Kempen and Matt Bowman\, Esq. will be speaking to medical students about how they can strive to maintain their conscience once they are practicing physicians. During the course of a medical career it is inevitable that a physician will be put in a position that may violate their conscience. Understanding how to handle such a situation and understanding how to practice medicine such that you do not violate your conscience is vital for future physicians. \nMatthew S. Bowman\, Esq.\, serves as senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom\, where he is a key member of the Center for Life. Bowman has focused his legal efforts on promoting a culture of life\, leading the fight against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate that forces employers to provide employees with healthcare coverage that includes early abortion items and birth control in violation of their religious convictions. \n  \n  \nDr. Paul Kempen attended medical school in Freiburg\, Germany in the 1980’s and is a practicing Anesthesiologist in Cleveland\, OH. He currently practices at The Cleveland Clinic and is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kempen is board certified in Anesthesiology and also practices at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Anesthesiology in Lorain\, OH. \n  \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: BRI-Georgetown and the Catholic Medical Association sponsored this presentation for 25 interested medical students\, faculty and staff. Dr. Kempen spoke on medical ethics providing examples of what he and other doctors have encountered in the realm of ethical concerns while practicing medicine. He made sure to explain that it is always wise to choose your ethical battles carefully\, and that ethical consults are always available\, even to medical students. On the other hand\, Matt Bowman spoke on medical ethics with a thesis of “doctor autonomy enables patient choice.” Mr. Bowman reasoned that forcing all doctors to practice medicine as the government or medical elite see fit reduces patient choices. For example\, some patients who may be pro-life may have a desire only to receive care from doctors who are also pro-life. \n \n“Both speakers were excellent.” ~Second year medical student\n“Mr. Bowman had a very well reasoned and logical presentation.” ~Second year medical student

DESCRIPTION:What exact healthcare policies are the 2016 presidential candidates proposing?\nPlease join us for lunch and refreshments as BRI officers present the various 2016 presidential candidates’ healthcare policies and plans. A Q&A and small group discussion will follow. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Three SLU-BRI chapter officers\, Alex Wisbeck\, Erick Sink\, and Kevin Huynh presented the 2016 Republican and Democratic presidential candidates’ healthcare plans to 28 mostly first year medical school attendees at this pizza lunch meeting. The presentation lasted 30 minutes\, which left 20 minutes for questions. \nFellow students were interested in the presentation\, and as a result we had quite a few questions about the candidates’ specific policies and also about healthcare policy in general. \n“I thought that this lunch discussion went very well. My fellow junior officers and I learned a bit while researching the candidates. Also\, because we left a lot of time for questions and because our presentation was delivered as peers and not as an expert panel\, we felt that many more questions were asked and elaborated upon. I think this type of set up facilitates discussions with medical students\, especially those who are relatively new to topics in healthcare policy and may be hesitant to speak up in other settings.” ~Kevin Huynh\, presenter and BRI chapter officer

Since the 1980s\, the U.S. has conflated the disparate goals of research and reimbursement by linking the ICD codes to payments for health care. This unwise policy will be compounded by replacing the current ICD-9 with the newer and vastly more complex ICD-10. Adoption of the ICD-10 comes with significant costs and trade-offs.
