SUMMARY:Duke University—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care: A successful medical delivery model\, with Dr. Amy Walsh
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture with Dr. Amy Walsh\, an established Direct Primary Care (DPC) doctor in Raleigh\, NC. Please RSVP via the link\, below. \n  \nIn spite of the growing number of physician testimonials touting the value of DPC\, many med students are still unfamiliar with Direct Primary Care as a successful medical delivery model. Please join us to hear Dr. Walsh’s story. Dr. Walsh trained at Georgetown\, went in to family medicine and worked part-time as an employed physician for 15+ years before seeing the light of DPC. In her own words\, “I opened my own DPC practice in 2015 AND HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER with my career.” \nPlease visit Dr. Walsh’s website: Doctor Direct (DoctorDirectMD.com) \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Amy Walsh\, is established family medicine physician who has been practicing in the Raleigh\, NC area for over 20 years. She opened her own Direct Primary Care practice in 2015. She spoke about her journey transitioning to the direct primary care model and the benefits that it provides as an alternative model for the delivery of health care. \nApproximately 30 people were in attendance\, primarily first and second year Duke medical students with some representation from third and fourth year classes. We also had a representative from the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and two representatives from Benjamin Rush Institute. Dr. Walsh presented about 20 minutes of powerpoint slides and this was followed by a 20-30 minute question and answer session with the audience. \nThe event went very well. Students were engaged and interested to hear about a topic that is not covered by our usual medical education. Dr. Amy Walsh was a great speaker. She is highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Direct Primary Care.” ~Andrew Yuan\, Duke medical student and event organizer \n“It was such a great event. My Clinical Skills Foundation (med student small group) met afterward and was very interested in learning more about direct primary care!” ~Medical student attendee \n“I learned so much!” ~Medical student attendee \n“I’m glad we had the chance to learn more about an important topic not covered by our medical school curriculum.” ~Medical student attendee

SUMMARY:Penn State College of Medicine—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care as a Solution for Health Care Reform?
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr will speak about his experience starting his own Direct Pay Primary Care practice and how he sees this model as a possible solution to healthcare reform. Penn State faculty are underwriting refreshments for this event. \nAffectionately known as “Dr. Josh” by medical students who know him\, Dr. Umbehr has been a frequent speaker at BRI events\, and at a past leadership conference. He was also featured on BRI’s Next Generation Medicine podcast Episode #3.\nYou can learn more about Dr. Josh and AtlasMD on the AtlasMD website. \nI was born and raised in Alma\, Kansas where I met my high school sweetheart\, Lisa\, while playing football at Manhattan High School and followed her to Kansas State University. While there\, I majored in human nutritional sciences with a minor in biology. I also did extensive research on the effects of vitamin A on lung cancer. I then graduated from The University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed my family medicine residency at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. After completing training and becoming a board certified Family Physician\, I opened Atlas MD\, a practice that I had been dreaming about for nearly a decade. Atlas MD represents my ideal medical practice where I’m able to shrug off the burdens and restrictions of government and insurance regulation so I can focus solely on my patients and their needs.” ~Dr. Josh Umbehr\, from the AtlasMD website \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Forty-five students and faculty attended this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr hosted a question and answer discussion around Direct Primary Care. He shared his life as a DPC physician and how he sees DPC impacting the future of healthcare. The event was well attended and guest ranged from medical students\, to residents\, to the Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. \n“I was thrilled with Dr. Umbehr’s performance and the event was a perfect inaugural event for our chapter. It was well attended and well received.” ~Nate Williams\, BRI-PSUCOM president \n“Until this event\, I had no idea what Direct Primary Care was.” ~Medical Student attendee\n“While I had previously heard about Direct Primary Care\, our Health Systems curriculum never covered it and that knowledge gap was filled today by Dr. Umbehr.” ~Medical Student attendee \nPictured from left to right: Grant Owens-Treasurer\, Nate Williams-President\, Dr. Josh Umbehr\, Mike Goldenberg-Vice President
