SUMMARY:UNC -Greenville: “Why What’s Called Health Insurance\, Isn’t”
DESCRIPTION:The US is seemingly trapped in an endless upward spiral of healthcare costs. \nThe ACA was passed with claims that it would solve the problem of the uninsured and bend the cost curve downward. How’s it doing? \nHalfway through the first official year of full implementation of the ACA\, some people have gained coverage while significant number of others have lost coverage. The latest Gallup Poll estimates 13.4% are still without coverage. That’s an improvement from a peak of 18% uninsured in mid-2013\, but the vast majority of newly covered have been enrolled into Medicaid – a highly flawed program where coverage all too frequently does not translate into actual medical care. \nThis mediocre success in resolving the problem of the uninsured is coupled with absolute failure in bringing down the cost of insurance and medical care. Much of the failure to bend the cost curve downward is due to a failure to understand what is and isn’t insurance. What’s being called healthcare insurance \, isn’t insurance.  Until we get this right\, any attempt to lower healthcare costs will be negated by the laws of economics. \n

SUMMARY:Georgetown | Lecture — Dr. Robert F. Graboyes\, Obamacare Alternatives: "Islands of Innovation" vs. "Repeal & Replace"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Robert F. Graboyes\nSenior Research Fellow\, Mercatus Center at George Mason University \nIslands of Innovation\nThe ACA (Affordable Care Act\, or Obamacare) is a destructive law whose weaknesses are well-known. But pre-ACA health care was loaded with damaging laws\, regulations\, and customs—many of them supported by the same people who fiercely oppose the ACA. For nearly five years\, ACA opponents have issued futile promises to repeal and replace the ACA—but their proposals have been hollow and remain politically undeliverable. \nBoth ACA and pre-ACA institutions are similarly fearful of risks and deferential to insiders\, and the repeal-and-replace proposals would do little to alleviate these problems. Fortunately\, medicine is about to be slammed by a slew of new technologies that will radically change health care. These changes offer the opportunity to pursue a strategy akin to America’s Pacific Theater strategy in World War II—reform health care island by island by island\, taking down hundreds of ACA and pre-ACA obstacles to better health. This talk will cover how this island-hopping strategy can get us past the tedious debate between Obamacare and Repeal-and-Replace.

SUMMARY:Mayo Medical School: "Understanding Insurance: the key to worldwide\, affordable\, quality healthcare"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, MD\n“Understanding Insurance: the key to worldwide\, affordable\, quality healthcare” \nHow many Americans have proper health insurance? The latest figures from March of 2014claim that 13.1% of Americans are without health insurance. But in fact\, very few Americans have health insurance… because what people call health insurance really isn’t insurance at all. To solve the challenges we face in healthcare\, we must be clear in our concepts and definitions. The failure to understand what is and ins’t insurance is a major\, if not the major reason we are failing to get a handle on spiraling health care costs. If you are concerned about the state of healthcare – not just in the US but throughout the world – you first need to understand insurance: what it is and what it isn’t\,  and thus what it can and can’t do toward achieving meaningful access to quality medical care. \nUntil we fully understand what is and isn’t insurance\, healthcare costs can not be controlled by anything short of full rationing. Come find out why.

SUMMARY:Ohio University HCOM - Lecture: Free Market Systems and the ACA\, by Dr. Richard Vedder\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard K. Vedder is an American economist\, historian\, author\, columnist\, and currently distinguished Professor of Economics Emeritus at Ohio University and Senior Fellow at The Independent Institute. Please join us for a discussion on the value of free markets\, and how these concepts apply (or don’t apply) to the Affordable Care Act. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: On December 12\, 2014\, Dr. Richard Vedder spoke to 15 students at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Topics included the value of free markets\, and how these concepts apply (or don’t apply) to the Affordable Care Act. \nBecause medical school does not provide a business education\, this talk was very beneficial for students because it provided scope outside of medicine and broadened students’ perspectives into a field that they do not typically address. \nDr. Richard Vedder is very well respected in the academic world\, and his presentation was interesting and provided a perspective that medical students are not often exposed to. His knowledge of the topic was incredibly relevant\, and he was engaging and entertaining.

SUMMARY:Ohio State University - Lecture: Dr. Todd Fredricks\, DO "Who Owns You — Are You Truly Free?"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Todd Fredricks is a Primary Care physician from Ohio University. His talk will cover the current state of the PPACA with regard to impending legal challenge\, the state of medicine as practiced by new physicians\, and the current changes that physicians are making to try and reestablish personal freedom in practice. \nLunch will be provided. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Forty-five attendees — mostly medical students from Ohio State — joined BRI for a Lunch and Learn with Dr. Todd Fredricks\, D.O.\, of Ohio University. Dr. Fredricks’ talk centered on how the ACA infringes upon personal liberty and the Doctor-Patient relationship. Dr. Fredricks began by addressing the concept of liberty from the points of view of our nation’s founders\, quoting the likes of Jefferson\, Hamilton\, and Franklin. Dr. Fredricks then applied this concept to the current healthcare climate. \nDr. Fredricks also gave brief updates on King v. Burwell\, as well as other current legal challenges to the ACA. In the end\, he provided some parting shots regarding how new practitioners should approach their careers in medicine given the political and economic climates. The event was very well received by students\, and many hung around to chat with Dr. Fredricks after the event. \nThis was the best turnout we’ve had for a single-speaker event. The event lived up to expectations\, and I think students enjoyed the presentation\, and several approached him after the event to talk. Dr. Fredricks was very gracious and is always well prepared.\n

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute\, will present a lecture on why medicine and healthcare are delivered optimally in a profit-based system\, rather than in a government-\, or even non-profit system. Free market medicine is better for doctors\, patients\, and the poor. We invite you to come and listen to Dr. Haynes\, especially if this viewpoint is unfamiliar to you or counter to your current views. \nNote: This event occurs in the Eastern Time Zone. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Thirty-five OSU students and faculty from across the political spectrum gathered at lunch time for a thought-provoking talk on the role of profits in medicine by Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of BRI. In her talk\, Dr. Haynes began by providing data on how the economic freedom of a country correlates positively with health outcomes such as life expectancy. She then spoke about how government regulation of industry is correlated with high prices and poor quality. She gave the examples of healthcare and education as two highly regulated industries that have been problematic for the U.S. for several decades. Conversely\, industries free of intervention such as high-tech have more competition and thus lower costs with higher quality. \nIn order to lend evidence to her point that markets provide optimal benefit to consumers\, Dr. Haynes gave examples of doctors from around the country who’ve found ways to provide services for cash. Her examples showed that unfettered markets in healthcare have already succeeded in improving patient care and physician satisfaction while decreasing cost. \nOverall\, the event was very well received by the students\, as evidenced by a lengthy Q&A period following the talk.

SUMMARY:George Washington University — Lecture: Medicine's New Frontier: Free Market Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Keith Smith is a pioneer in free market medicine. The things he and his coworkers have accomplished are an example of how price transparency and free market principles can lead to affordable\, high quality healthcare. \nEveryone is welcome to attend. RSVP is required for this event. This is especially important for non-GW affiliated guests as I will need to get your name on the list at the front security desk. Please bring a photo ID. \nRefreshments will be served. \nNOTE: This event take place Eastern Time. \nPARKING: Best method is to take the metro to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station on the blue/orange line. For those who prefer to drive\, there is limited\, free 2-hour parking east of the building. Or there is metered parking in the surrounding area. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: \nDr. Keith Smith gave a very provocative lecture that challenged the way a lot of the people in attendance have been taught about the true cost of providing health care. Dr. Smith was especially a big hit with students who are members of our school’s Entrepreneurial Track program. That isn’t to say that everyone agreed with his conclusions\, but no one could argue with his results. \nAfter the lecture\, Dr. Smith spent 20 minutes just answering questions about the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. Some people still had concerns about the viability of the model in providing access to the poorest of the poor\, but overall people seemed genuinely surprised at just how well the model worked–not only for the physicians\, but more importantly for the patients. \nDinner was provided before the lecture which provided time for students to interact with Dr. Smith. \n— \n[…] for The Surgery Center of Oklahoma.  The video blog resulted from Dr. Smith’s lecture on “Medicine’s New Frontier: Free Market Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma” before a large medical student audience at George Washington University on February 3. SUMMARY:U. of Louisville - Lecture: MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology
DESCRIPTION:MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology\n\n\n\n\nVas Abramov\, Director of Engineering and Manufacturing at Occam Design and CEO of MB Device\, LLC \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nMr Abramov had two separate presentations. The first part was an overview of what it takes to create a new medical product and get it placed in the medical field. He discussed ideas\, prototypes\, FDA regulations and testing\, funding\, and sales. \nIn the second part\, Mr Abramov discussed a new piece of technology\, the MB Device\, which is just starting testing. It is a cervical device that sends constant information to a smart phone or tablet and enables pre-term labors to be predicted one to two weeks early. This allows physicians to delay the labors and create better outcomes. It is projected to save $5-$15 billion of the $26 billion spent every year on pre-term labors.
