SUMMARY:SUNY Downstate—LECTURE: Innovations in Healthcare Delivery with Beth Haynes\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Healthcare Delivery: All are welcome to join us for a FREE lunch lecture with Dr. Beth Haynes\, medical director of Benjamin Rush Institute. This talk is co-hosted by the SUNY Downstate student chapter of the American Medical Association and the Downstate Medical Entrepreneurship Club. \nBeth Haynes\, MD BRI medical director\nThe need for affordable\, high quality medical care in the US is an ongoing discussion. There are some exciting models that are achieving these goals\, both in the US and internationally: cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty\, MD. What can we learn from these entrepreneurial models to help address the cost and access challenges our country faces? \nLunch guaranteed to those who RSVP 48-hours in advance. \nThe Downstate Student Center Main Lounge is located across the street from the Health Science Education Building.

SUMMARY:OSUMC\, Columbus\, OH—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this FREE lunch lecture event\, Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness. The BRI-OSU chapter teamed up with the wellness council at OSU medical school to host a lunch talk with Dr. Heather Bartlett\, a local DPC physician\, owner and founder of The Bartlett Medical Clinic & Wellness Center. She will talk about how her practice works and how it enhances her patients’—and her own—overall wellness. We will be serving Jimmy Johns subs. The wellness council will be supplying the food and Coke will provide the drinks. \nThose who RSVP within 48 hours of the event will be guaranteed food. There is convenient parking at the 9th Ave garage across the street. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended the talk. Dr. Bartlett began by giving her story\, talking about all the problems in the current healthcare system that she encountered during her early years as a physician. She then talked about the process of starting her own DPC clinic\, and talked about all the ways that DPC can cut costs to provide enormous value to patients. She also talked about all the ways that her practice has saved her own personal wellness\, which is important in the face of so much physician burnout. \nMany students stayed 45 minutes after the talk was over to ask questions – there was tons of interest in DPC! One medical student even said that she planned to open a DPC practice in the future. A pre-med student there talked with Dr. Bartlett afterwards to organize a talk for a broader undergraduate audience as well. \nDr. Bartlett did a phenomenal job and was a lot of fun to listen to. I would recommend her to any other chapter looking to host a DPC physician and also for the 2018 Leadership Conference.” ~Morgan Kohls\, BRI-OSU chapter president

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—LUNCH LECTURE: "Is Healthcare a Right?"
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for this lunch lecture—the first in a 2-part discussion both occurring on 1/17/18\, one at lunch\, and one at dinner. \nWe will consider two different viewpoints surrounding the topic “Is Healthcare a Right?”—a crucial consideration in the argument for and against universal healthcare. \n \n  \nOur lunch talk will be held by Dr. Fabrice Jotterand\, a Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Bioethics\, and will be entitled “Keeping the Debate on a Moral Ground: Why Health Care is not a Right.” \nWe will also be hosting a dinner talk (separate RSVP requested) with our very own Dr. Beth Haynes\, Medical Director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and will be entitled “Are rights relevant to healthcare? An inquiry.” Both talks will have plenty of time for Q&A as we hope to actively engage this topic. \nPlease RSVP for both or either event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty-six students and faculty attended this lecture. This was an exciting\, fun\, and informative day. Our BRI-MCW chapter put on two events on 1/17/18. Both revolved around the question: “Is healthcare a right?” This lunch talk with Dr. Jotterand\, a PhD bioethicist from Switzerland\, was the first of the two events. He argued that it is difficult to say that healthcare is a right\, but argued that on a moral ground we should determine that it is a social obligation for us to provide it to those around us. \nThis event went very smoothly\, it was incredible that Dr. Haynes came to the lunch talk and was able to converse with Dr. Jotterand. In return\, he came to her dinner talk and they were able to converse more.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, BRI-MCW officer

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine—LECTURE: Build the medical practice of your dreams!
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture on building the medical practice of your dreams\, starting with a great foundation! Literally\, your building! \nJoin BRI-SLU and Mark Morrison to learn how to take the fears out of starting your the medical practice you envision. Please RSVP to ensure enough refreshments for all! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-eight students attended to hear Mr. Mark Morrison and Mr. Chris Howard give an overview of the financial literacy and considerations needed in order to start your own practice. Topics that came up in this talk included advice on what common loans we would be given as a start-up practice\, as well as finding a necessary real estate professional to vouch for us as a practicing physician. \nThis talk provided a great introduction to the skills\, staff\, and finances needed to start your own practice. Healthcare professionals could benefit from learning about real estate representation and loan negotiations prior to engaging in medical financing solutions\, especially for those interested in developing their own private practice.” ~June Tong\, SLU-BRI chapter co-president \n \n“Provided a very good\, albeit rushed overview of the financial considerations needed for a private practice. I think it would have been beneficial to have expanded the event\, because there was a surprisingly larger representation of 3rd year medical students in the audience. In addition\, we received emails regarding recording the presentation\, which we couldn’t do due to technical limitations within the room. The speakers were very knowledgeable and I would greatly recommend them as a source of knowledge for those interested in starting their own practice.” Event attendee\, SLU

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine—LECTURE: MedTech: Medical entrepreneurship\, with Ramin Lalezari
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a talk on medical entrepreneurship with Mr. Ramin Lalezari\, CEO and president of Sling Health St. Louis\, a company whose objective is to make medical entrepreneurship attainable for medical students and physicians. \nPlease RSVP so we can ensure enough refreshments for all. There is free parking on Caroline Street. \nFrom Sling Health’s website: \nSling Health STL the founding chapter of a national student-run non-profit organization founded in 2013 by medical students at Washington University in St. Louis in order to confront the surplus of unsolved clinical problems they encountered within the hospitals. Our organization brings together a diverse group of students\, clinicians\, and local entrepreneurs to develop and commercialize medtech solutions that ultimately improve patient health care. \n\nOur main objectives are:\nTo make medical entrepreneurship attainable for students and physicians\nTo integrate students from the schools of medicine\, business\, engineering\, and arts & sciences to develop novel devices and software in order to tackle unmet clinical needs.\n\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five students attended. \n \nRamin was a good speaker. He went over different types of patents and how to get more involved in medical entrepreneurship. He also invited students to contact him for more opportunities. We usually expect a larger audience; however\, our anatomy curriculum was changed this year to become more strenuous so fewer M1 students showed up. We felt the event was helpful for the students. We hope in the future to emphasize how a medical student can get involved more so during the talk.” ~Maggie Wang\, SLU-BRI co-president

SUMMARY:Young Americans for Liberty (YAL)—LECTURE: What to do about America's healthcare mess\, with Dr. Beth Haynes
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI medical director will deliver a breakout session lecture at Young Americans for Liberty on what to do about America’s healthcare mess. Key points to consider are how understanding economics\, price vs. cost\, and other factors are critical to being able to discuss and promote healthcare policy that best protects the patient-doctor relationship and best guarantees high quality and access\, while lowering costs.

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine @ Mt. Sinai—LECTURE: Physician Burnout and the Physician-Patient Relationship\, Beth Haynes\, MD
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lunch lecture. Food will be provided to those who RSVP within 48 hours of the event. \nPhysician burnout and physician suicide are epidemic. In this lecture we will look at various contributing factors and what can be done. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, medical director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, will be meeting with students of the Stony Brook Medical School campus during lunch to discuss the topic of physician burnout and how it affects the patient-doctor relationship. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes provided a very nice overview of physician burnout\, recent trends in physician burnout epidemiology\, and some of the root causes of burnout. The continued intrusion of government\, insurance companies\, EMRs and other third parties have eroded the physician-patient relationship. Not only does this negatively impact our patients\, but it also exacts a toll on physicians. \nBeth then transitioned to summarizing some of the research into the neurobiology of human relationships\, and how these insights help us understand burnout. To activate neurohormonal axes in the brain\, humans need meaningful social contact\, including eye contact\, emotional connection\, and physical contact. These basic elements that underly the neurobiology of the physician-patient relationship are lacking in today’s overburdened and regulated practice settings. \nNotably\, direct primary care doctors claim that their practices are more fulfilling and inspire them because these physicians can practice medicine the way it should be\, and form meaningful bonds with their patients.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook—LECTURE: What Is and Isn't Insurance\, and Why It Matters to Controlling Healthcare Costs
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lunch lecture. Food will be provided to those who RSVP within 48 hours of the event. \nThink you know what insurance is? Do you know how it relates to healthcare costs? Come find out what you may not know! \nDr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, will be meeting with students of the Stony Brook Medical School campus during lunch to discuss the topic: “What Is and Isn’t Insurance\, and Why It Matters to Controlling Healthcare Costs.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty-nine students and faculty attended this lunch lecture. Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of BRI\, gave an hour long presentation over lunch to first year students of the Stony Brook School of Medicine. As our chapter feels not many medical students receive any formal education on the topics of health policy (unless they are in a dual degree program)\, we asked Dr. Haynes to speak about “What is and isn’t health insurance.” \n“Dr. Haynes’s presentation provided a great foundation to understanding the language involved in debating healthcare policy\, and the importance of understanding terms which are used inappropriately (specifically\, “insurance”). By clarifying the nature of insurance as just one mechanism by which healthcare can be financed\, it sowed the seeds of more productive conversation amongst the student body (overheard in the halls and facebook\, long after the presentation had ended).” ~Sean Randazzo\, event coordinator

SUMMARY:A.T. Still University—LECTURE @ Mercer College of Medicine: Netflix vs Blockbuster: A Case Study in Practice Innovation (DPC)
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to attend a lunch lecture by Drs. Pete and Christi Ghaleb. Direct Primary Care is an increasingly popular practice model which focuses on value-based care by offering patients more comprehensive services for a low monthly fee instead of billing insurance. Like a Netflix subscription for medicine\, DPC offers “all you can treat” primary care that is patient-centered\, and eliminates traditional Fee-For-Service billing (Blockbuster). Often for only $50/month for most adults\, patients receive unlimited office visits\, can call/text/email their provider directly\, and get free after-hours visits. In addition\, patients receive discounts on meds\, labs\, and imaging—commonly saving over 90%. Primary care doesn’t have to be expensive\, and DPC shows why. \nThrough this model\, DPC creates unprecedented value and is able to achieve the quadruple aim of: \n(1) higher quality care\,\n(2) lower cost of care\,\n(3) increased access\, and\n(4) greater patient/physician experience. \nThis model is included in the Affordable Care Act\, and is a hot topic in today’s health policy world because of its positive impact on patient care. \nCome sit back and learn about the future of medicine. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP within 48 hours of the event. \nAttendees will asked be asked to participate in a very brief anonymous survey. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Eighteen students and faculty attended this lunchtime presentation event for a study being conducted by Will Craghead on DPC’s ability to influence medical students to enter primary care specialty. Pre- & Post-surveys were collected\, and lunch was provided. \nDr. Pete Ghaleb did an excellent job at presenting on DPC and its value proposition. His presentation was well accepted by students\, and we had a great Q&A session afterwards. All in all\, students were very excited about DPC. Dr. Pete was mentored by Dr. Josh Umbehr of Atlas MD\, and he patterned his practice model after Josh’s. Pete is also helping other docs start DPC clinics. \nOne of the questions from a student was regarding DPC creating a shortage. I referred the student to AAFPs report on 2/3 of doc’s time being admin and EMR related\, also directed student to recent JAMA article refuting any such shortage: (http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2613209)” ~Will Craghead\, event organizer

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—PRESENTATION: Grassroots Healthcare Revolution with John Torinus
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to attend this lunch lecture on healthcare policy with Mr. John Torinus. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP. \n \n  \nJohn Torinus\, author of The Grassroots Health Care Revolution and former CEO of of Serigraph\, believes that the only way to improve health care and lower health costs are at the local level. In this talk\, he will address how companies need to return to private health care and the effect that it will have on health care quality and cost. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-two students and faculty enjoyed lunch and a presentation by John Torinus. Mr. Torinus is currently a chairman for Serigraph\, a company in Wisconsin that has cut its healthcare spending per employee in half—from ~$26\,000 to ~$13\,000 per year. This has been accomplished through self insurance and “bundles.” \nThe event began at noon and went until one pm. Mr. Torinus provided a 30-40 minute speech on his history and how he began their self-insurance. After his presentation\, attendees were all welcome to ask questions for around 20 minutes and much conversation ensued.\nThe meal was held during the lunch talk and was provided to students of MCW. \n“This event provided important education on self-insurance. As future physicians\, we receive little education on the finances of healthcare. Receiving these kinds of introductions is paramount for our futures.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, Treasurer and event organizer\, BRI-MCW \nMost questions revolved around discrimination during hiring and the possibility of adverse selection with their market taking predominantly young\, healthy individuals.

SUMMARY:Sackler School of Medicine @ Tel Aviv University—LECTURE: How We Got to Our Healthcare Today
DESCRIPTION:Jordan Halevy\, MS1 and BRI-Sackler chapter Founder and President will deliver an overview of the history of healthcare in the US\, from the founding of the AMA and mutual societies all the way up to the ACA and beyond. The presentation will highlight the numerous government interventions into the healthcare market and how those distortions still affect us to this day. \n \nFrom the group’s Facebook page:\nAs a future physician\, empower yourself by joining us to find out how the U.S. healthcare system got its start. Learn about the roots of our broken system and what the ACA intends to do about it. Refreshments will be served at 11\, followed by a presentation given by Jordan Halevy and Q&A session. \nThis event is hosted by the Sackler Chapter of the Benjamin Rush Institute. BRI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has established chapters on various medical school campuses across America and abroad. Board members include: Jordan Halevy\, Gabriel Banschick\, Jonathan Kovacs\, and Nicole Shalit. \nOur mission statement: Promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care\, empowered by a robust free enterprise system\, which fosters innovation and reduces costs. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Eighteen students attended this presentation. \n“The event started off with refreshments being served. We received a solid turnout of approximately one third of the freshman class. The presentation focused on major milestones in American healthcare that either still exist with us or served as the impetus for policy today. \n“While I attempted to focus primarily on factual legislation and such throughout the presentation\, I also used the opportunity to highlight both government intervention and cronyism from private actors. Once put together\, the presentation served as a cautionary tale about good intentions leading to bad policy while empowering special interest groups at the expense of the average American. \n“There was only one question asked at the end\, and it was a technical question about how the ACA penalty for not having insurance is assessed. I edited it out of the video to keep the video looking a lot cleaner.” ~Jordan Halevy\, BRI-Sackler chapter founder & president \nEvent feedback from Mr. Halevy:\nOne student reported enjoying the presentation and felt that he “learned a lot.” After attending he said he wanted to further pursue the topic by doing more research on his own. Another student personally thanked me for putting on the presentation\, saying it was informative and saved him the effort of needing to look up all of this material in the future. \n

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care with Dr. Mark Niedfeldt
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, March 22nd\, the Benjamin Rush Institute hosted a lunch talk for 42 students with Dr. Mark Niedfeldt. An alumnus and previous MCW faculty member\, Dr. Niedfeldt now owns a solo direct medical care (often called Direct Primary Care) clinic which offers patients unprecedented access to the physician and a higher level of personal attention. We heard him speak about his practice and how he offers high quality doctor-patient relationships in a cost-effective way. \nAfter beginning with a description of the modern medical field and why costs are frequently higher than desired\, he went through a list of “problems.” E.g. big pharma\, salaries\, hospital administrators… etc. He ended by describing his current practice and laying out reasons for why he left his old setting in academia. \nOverall\, the event was well accepted and multiple students sought him out after the talk to ask specific questions. \n“This event was well timed given recent/ongoing debates on the national level regarding health care. The speaker was well prepared and persuasive.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, treasurer\, BRI-MCW

SUMMARY:Georgetown University—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care\, Family- and Modern Mobile Medicine
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this presentation by two family practice doctors on Direct Primary Care\, Drs. Marguerite Duane and Matt Haden. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty students and faculty took advantage of this opportunity to explore DPC. Drs. Marguerite Duane and Matt Haden spoke about their direct primary care practice called Modern Mobile Medicine. Their model makes use of the direct primary care model but also incorporates home visits and telemedicine to improve convenience for patients. One of their patients attended the talk with her son and explained how beneficial the practice model was for her. Not only can she access very affordable care around the clock\, but she also is able to have a doctor visit her or her son at home\, minimizing the hassle of visiting a doctor’s office. Modern Mobile Medicine is in its early stages but is expanding rapidly. \n\nHad a great time talking to @Georgetown #medstudents last week. Great to see interest in #DPC and the #doctorpatientrelationship https://t.co/PcuzRqIdBP \n— Matt Haden MD (@matteohaden) February 13\, 2017 \n \n“This event surpassed our expectations. There was a very large audience\, and they were actively engaged. The speakers were excellent and were able to share their experiences thus far in medicine and how their new practice is embodying what drew them to medicine in the first place. We had a DPC speaker in the fall who was terrific\, but these speakers were just as good. They not only explained the huge benefits of DPC\, but they also touched on why the insurance-based and heavily-regulated traditional model does not make economic sense or provide patients with the best options or prices. The event attracted those interested in both DPC and primary care in general\, so I feel that a wide range of opinions on healthcare policy were represented. Drs. Duane and Haden could not have represented the free market any better than they did. Overall\, the event could not have gone better.” Malcom Magovern\, BRI-Georgetown chapter president. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai—LECTURE: Fortress and Frontier in American Healthcare with Dr. Robert Graboyes
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to listen to one of the most frequently requested lecturers on healthcare policy. The BRI-Icahn chapter is pleased to present Dr. Robert Graboyes\, who will be speaking about his fortress and frontiers framework for understanding barriers to innovation in American healthcare. \nThere are few who can illuminate the challenges of innovation in healthcare with such wit and intelligence as Dr. Graboyes. Refreshments will be served. Kindly RSVP to ensure enough food for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Graboyes gave a very interesting talk to 40 students and faculty about his model of the barriers to innovation in medicine. The fortress represents risk averse\, vested interests that resist change\, such as insurance companies\, physicians and hospitals. The frontier is where other sectors of the economy operate\, such as IT. In health care\, Dr. Graboyes argued that we are unwilling to take the risks necessary to move medicine forward at the same rate IT has advanced. \nIn an engaging manner\, Dr. Graboyes walked through several examples of where the frontier in American health care is developing\, defying the trend of most of the field. He spoke passionately about his own experiences as an A fib patient\, and the comfort and savings provided to him by a mobile EKG iPhone case. This allows Dr. Graboyes better control over his own health care decisions\, allows him to save the system money and gives him more information about his health data. \nStudents had a number of questions and follow up for Dr. Graboyes\, a testament to the interesting nature of his talk. \n“The event exceeded expectations. It is a testament to Dr. Graboyes’ talk that many found it so engaging.” ~Hrishi Srinagesh\, BRI-Icahn president and event coordinator \nDr. Robert Graboyes is a Senior Research Fellow and Health Care Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Author of “Fortress and Frontier in American Health Care\,” his work asks\, “How can we make health care as innovative in the next 25 years as information technology was in the past 25?” \nPreviously\, he was health care advisor for the National Federation of Independent Business\, economics professor at the University of Richmond\, regional economist/director of education at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond\, and Sub-Saharan Africa economist for Chase Manhattan Bank. His work has taken him to Europe\, Africa\, and Central Asia. An award-winning teacher\, he holds faculty appointments at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. Previously he taught at George Mason University and the George Washington University. \nHis degrees include a PhD in Economics from Columbia University; master’s from Columbia University\, Virginia Commonwealth University\, and the College of William and Mary; and a bachelor’s from the University of Virginia. He has chaired the National Economists Club\, Richmond Association for Business Economics\, and National Association for Business Economics Healthcare Roundtable. \nHe won the Reason Foundation’s 2014 Bastiat Prize for Journalism\, an international competition for “writing that best demonstrates the importance of individual liberty and free markets with originality\, wit\, and eloquence.” \n

SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences—LECTURE: When Health Policy\, Economics and Patient Care Intersect
DESCRIPTION:Interested in hearing the practitioner’s perspective on how healthcare economics and patient care might be impacted by the recent election? All are welcome to join the BRI-GWU chapter on Wednesday 12/7 at lunch to hear Dr. Jesse Pines\, MD\, MBA\, an emergency physician who served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. \nDr. Pines will discuss current healthcare innovations in the context of political and economic limitations\, and how we as future physicians can navigate the changing healthcare landscape to best serve our patients. \nLunch will be provided! Please REGISTER to ensure enough food for all. \nDr. Pines is the Director of the GW Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy Research in the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine & Health Sciences and a Professor of Health Policy and Management at GW Milken Institute School of Public Health (MISPH). Dr. Pines is the Principal Investigator for Urgent Matters (www.urgentmatters.org)\, a program that disseminates information on best practices in emergency care. Dr. Pines is a board-certified emergency physician practicing at GW Hospital with extensive experience in quality improvement\, patient safety\, operations research\, and clinical epidemiology. Dr. Pines has served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center\, and a consultant to the National Quality Forum on patient safety and emergency care. He co-authored an Institute of Medicine Report on sustainable models for emergency preparedness funding. \nDr. Pines holds a B.A. in the Biological Basis of Behavior and a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from University of Pennsylvania and an MD and a Masters in Business Administration from Georgetown University. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and a fellowship in research at Penn. Prior to coming to GW in 2010\, Dr. Pines served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine for 5 ½ years. \n \nDr. Pines has been awarded funding from multiple organizations including the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality\, GW Hospital\, Universal Health Services\, Inc.\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, the National Institutes of Health\, the Department of Homeland Security\, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, Emergency Medicine Foundation\, American College of Emergency Physicians\, American Geriatrics Society\, the Institute on Aging\, the Thomas McCabe fund\, the University Research Foundation at Penn\, the National Priorities Partnership on Aging\, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Abbott Point-of-Care. \nHe is author on more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has published several books: Visual Diagnosis in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (2006\, 2011)\, Evidence-Based Emergency Care: Diagnostic Testing and Clinical Decision Rules (2008\, 2013)\, and Emergency Care and the Public’s Health (2014). His latest book\, Value-Based Approaches in Acute and Emergency Care\, will be published in 2016. He has contributed to TIME magazine\, Slate.com\, Emergency Physicians’ Monthly\, Foreign Policy Magazine\, and the Wall Street Journal. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty medical students packed the meeting room to hear a practitioner perspective on what a Trump presidency could mean for healthcare. Dr. Pines\, an emergency physician with extensive experience and knowledge of health policy\, provided a brief history of health economics and health policy in the United States\, with special attention to the years leading up the passing of the ACA. He then outlined possible scenarios that might take place in the next administration by breaking down each major Republican leader’s priorities for healthcare. \n\n“Now more than ever\, people need to understand health policy and how it is going to impact physicians.” -Katie S.\, MS2 \n\nIn summary\, relentlessly rising healthcare costs without comparable health outcomes led to the ACA. Some goals of the ACA were to expand coverage and to shift towards a value-based payment system with greater accountability for patient outcomes. With the passing of MACRA\, there is a continued focus on merit-based payment for physicians and alternative payment models for hospitals. The ACA has been unpopular among many who see only a rise in cost sharing and overall healthcare spend. \n \nThe new policy agenda includes reforming Medicare and Medicaid\, shifting more to private health insurance coverage and benefits\, reducing healthcare costs\, and changing quality metrics. Dr. Pines thinks it is unlikely that the ACA will be repealed in it’s entirety; whats more likely is that major parts of it will be completely defunded. While the Republican leaders agree on some things\, they don’t agree on everything. Both Price and Ryan have strongly advocated for tax credits\, HSAs\, high risk pools\, and sales across state lines. However\, Ryan supports a continuous coverage requirement\, while Trump and Price do not. Trump and Price also advocate for price transparency. The push for price transparency is growing\, and that has the potential to radically change the healthcare system and the way we practice medicine. As it is\, most physicians don’t know themselves how much things costs and don’t know how to respond to patients when they ask how much something is going to cost. \n“Since the election\, I have truly had no idea what to expect for healthcare other than the overly simplified ‘repeal and replace.’ The lecture gave me a much better sense of what to look for in the coming administration.” -MS1 \nStudents of different political ideologies attended the event\, and there was significant discussion during the Q&A about the choice of Tom Price as health secretary. Some students expressed concern about his priorities\, while others thought him a choice who would represent physicians’ best interests. The lecture prompted numerous questions\, both during the presentation and afterwards. There is a clear understanding that policy will impact future physician practice\, and a strong desire to understand how. \n“Given the fact that it is right before finals and winter break\, I was expecting a much smaller turnout for this event. I was shocked by how many people came – first and second years who were days away from their exams\, third and fourth years who came from their hospital rotations to attend. There were even numerous requests to have the event recorded. There was a clear interest in understanding more about the current policy positions of those about to take leadership and change law. And the event absolutely delivered. Dr. Pines very clearly outlined all of the major policy positions of Trump\, Ryan\, and Price\, and he answered many questions throughout the event.” ~Caroline Jensen\, BRI-GWU President \n“A very informative talk.” – Leah F.\, MS2 \n

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Understanding Health Insurance: The Key to Healthcare Access and Affordability
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture by Benjamin Rush Institute executive director\, Dr. Beth Haynes. Dr. Haynes will explain the differences between health insurance and actual access to healthcare\, and how understanding this is key to understanding the current problems of healthcare access and affordability. \nWe will be serving lunch food. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes spoke on health insurance and how health insurance in its current form is not really insurance. She explained how health insurance prices are set\, and why premiums keep getting higher and higher. Rising premiums are causing younger people to not see health insurance as financially feasible\, leading to more people utilizing Medicaid as their “health insurance.” The loss of underwriting in health insurance policies is a big problem\, along with risk-pooling. It has created a death spiral similar to what Ludwig von Mises talks about when government gets involved in industries it has no business being in. \nDr. Haynes gave an example of how expensive health insurance is from David Goldhill’s book\, Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know About Healthcare is Wrong. An example is someone in her mid 20’s who is making $35k annually\, and how when it is all said and done about $10k goes to paying for just her health insurance. Over the course of her life\, about 2/3rds of her income goes to health insurance alone. Dr. Haynes compared health insurance to auto\, home\, and life insurance\, and talked about how these other types of insurance are different than most health insurance plans. \nAfter Dr. Haynes talk\, the eleven students that attended ended up asking questions and having a discussion for another 45 minutes or so. We talked about solutions to fix this problem\, along with other problems that need to be addressed and ways to focus on allowing innovation in health care and health insurance.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama @ Birmingham—LECTURE: Private Practice: A How-To Guide
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome and encouraged to attend this talk with Dr. Matthew Davis\, an orthopedic surgeon who runs a price-transparent private practice in Birmingham\, Alabama. Dr. Davis is affiliated with St. Vincent’s Birmingham and received his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Davis has been in practice for 16 years and will deliver remarks about his journey as a medical doctor in private practice. \nDr. Davis loves what he does every day\, because it allows him to be hands-on\, solve problems\, and build great relationships with his patients. He enjoys being able to give patients answers\, resolve their ailments\, and put them on a track toward comfort and mobility. He has 10 years of experience working as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon\, helping people by doing everything from ACL repairs to managing osteoarthritis. \nCome find out about Dr. Davis’s reflections on the changing nature of medical care delivery and how his system has been phenomenally successful for both himself and for his patients. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-six (36) students attended the presentation. President Thompson Foy opened the meeting\, thanked everyone for being in attendance\, and provided a brief review of our previous event (screening of a talk delivered by Juliette Madrigal-Dersch). He then introduced our speaker\, Dr. Matt Davis. For about 40 minutes\, Dr. Davis described the difficulties that face physicians in the traditional\, third-party payer healthcare setting. He contrasted this cumbersome model with his own practice\, in which 95% pay with cash out-of-pocket. Finally\, he spent a bit of time discussing the advantages afforded by capitalist\, free market systems. The talk was well-received\, and there were several questions from interested attendees at the end. President Thompson Foy concluded the meeting with a solicitation for membership.

SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine—LECTURE: What the Election Holds for Health Policy and Reform
DESCRIPTION:All are cordially invited to join us for a lunch lecture with Keith Fontenot\, Nonresident Fellow – Economic Studies\, The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. Mr. Fontenot will be at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences to discuss the future of healthcare reform. Mr. Fontenot has unparalleled insight into the development of the Affordable Care Act in the Obama Administration given his previous role as associate director for Health at the Office of Management and Budget. He will speak to future directions of healthcare policy through an economic lens\, considering the possible outcomes with the election of either candidate. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended Mr. Fontenot’s lecture. Keith Fontenot\, a non-resident fellow of Economic Studies at Brookings Institution\, came to George Washington University School of Health Sciences to discuss the current state of the Affordable Care Act and likely first moves in health policy for an elected president. In a thought-provoking and inspiring lunch discussion\, he sat down with first and second year medical students to discuss what to watch for after the election and how medical students can stay engaged as physicians in healthcare policy. \n \nIn his talk\, Fontenot proposed different scenarios for a Clinton versus Trump presidency. In the event of a Clinton presidency\, he believes it unlikely that healthcare legislative reform will be a priority. More likely will be changes to the administrative management of the ACA’s execution. He suggested that this is where we can expect the greatest changes\, and prioritization of specific agendas will be seen in modification to the “administrative dials.” \nIn the event of a Trump presidency\, Fontenot doesn’t think a complete legislative repeal is likely. He doesn’t envision a scenario where millions of newly insured lose their insurance. Instead\, he suggested that the punishment for non-adherence to the various components of the law will be minimized\, and the general commitment to the law will thus be reduced. \nFontenot fielded numerous student questions on the subject of healthcare economics. While discussing different models of payment and care\, he emphasized the idea that “if you’ve seen one market\, you’ve seen one market.” Markets across the country are very different\, and even within states\, there are huge variations in what works and what doesn’t. Given this reality\, it is difficult to compare healthcare models and support a one size fits all option. \nThe most important thing for medical students\, Fontenot said\, is to stay engaged. Medical students must read the news and understand what is going on in healthcare policy. Healthcare policy changes have huge implications for how physicians will be reimbursed in the future\, and future physicians must stay engaged to understand how these changes will impact them and how they can have a voice in the dialogue. \n“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect for this event\, but I was very pleased with how many people came. The students were incredibly engaged and asked many questions throughout the presentation. The presenter encouraged questions throughout and was happy to respond to a question or explain something around policy.” ~Caroline Jensen\, BRI-George Washington University chapter president \n“It is very inspiring to hear from someone who was so entrenched in the politics in the field and who knows so much about health care policy. I was very inspired to read up on what he was talking about.” ~Student\, GWU \n“That was great!!” ~Student\, GWU
