SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences—LECTURE: When Health Policy\, Economics and Patient Care Intersect
DESCRIPTION:Interested in hearing the practitioner’s perspective on how healthcare economics and patient care might be impacted by the recent election? All are welcome to join the BRI-GWU chapter on Wednesday 12/7 at lunch to hear Dr. Jesse Pines\, MD\, MBA\, an emergency physician who served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. \nDr. Pines will discuss current healthcare innovations in the context of political and economic limitations\, and how we as future physicians can navigate the changing healthcare landscape to best serve our patients. \nLunch will be provided! Please REGISTER to ensure enough food for all. \nDr. Pines is the Director of the GW Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy Research in the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine & Health Sciences and a Professor of Health Policy and Management at GW Milken Institute School of Public Health (MISPH). Dr. Pines is the Principal Investigator for Urgent Matters (www.urgentmatters.org)\, a program that disseminates information on best practices in emergency care. Dr. Pines is a board-certified emergency physician practicing at GW Hospital with extensive experience in quality improvement\, patient safety\, operations research\, and clinical epidemiology. Dr. Pines has served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center\, and a consultant to the National Quality Forum on patient safety and emergency care. He co-authored an Institute of Medicine Report on sustainable models for emergency preparedness funding. \nDr. Pines holds a B.A. in the Biological Basis of Behavior and a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from University of Pennsylvania and an MD and a Masters in Business Administration from Georgetown University. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and a fellowship in research at Penn. Prior to coming to GW in 2010\, Dr. Pines served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine for 5 ½ years. \n \nDr. Pines has been awarded funding from multiple organizations including the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality\, GW Hospital\, Universal Health Services\, Inc.\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, the National Institutes of Health\, the Department of Homeland Security\, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, Emergency Medicine Foundation\, American College of Emergency Physicians\, American Geriatrics Society\, the Institute on Aging\, the Thomas McCabe fund\, the University Research Foundation at Penn\, the National Priorities Partnership on Aging\, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Abbott Point-of-Care. \nHe is author on more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has published several books: Visual Diagnosis in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (2006\, 2011)\, Evidence-Based Emergency Care: Diagnostic Testing and Clinical Decision Rules (2008\, 2013)\, and Emergency Care and the Public’s Health (2014). His latest book\, Value-Based Approaches in Acute and Emergency Care\, will be published in 2016. He has contributed to TIME magazine\, Slate.com\, Emergency Physicians’ Monthly\, Foreign Policy Magazine\, and the Wall Street Journal. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty medical students packed the meeting room to hear a practitioner perspective on what a Trump presidency could mean for healthcare. Dr. Pines\, an emergency physician with extensive experience and knowledge of health policy\, provided a brief history of health economics and health policy in the United States\, with special attention to the years leading up the passing of the ACA. He then outlined possible scenarios that might take place in the next administration by breaking down each major Republican leader’s priorities for healthcare. \n\n“Now more than ever\, people need to understand health policy and how it is going to impact physicians.” -Katie S.\, MS2 \n\nIn summary\, relentlessly rising healthcare costs without comparable health outcomes led to the ACA. Some goals of the ACA were to expand coverage and to shift towards a value-based payment system with greater accountability for patient outcomes. With the passing of MACRA\, there is a continued focus on merit-based payment for physicians and alternative payment models for hospitals. The ACA has been unpopular among many who see only a rise in cost sharing and overall healthcare spend. \n \nThe new policy agenda includes reforming Medicare and Medicaid\, shifting more to private health insurance coverage and benefits\, reducing healthcare costs\, and changing quality metrics. Dr. Pines thinks it is unlikely that the ACA will be repealed in it’s entirety; whats more likely is that major parts of it will be completely defunded. While the Republican leaders agree on some things\, they don’t agree on everything. Both Price and Ryan have strongly advocated for tax credits\, HSAs\, high risk pools\, and sales across state lines. However\, Ryan supports a continuous coverage requirement\, while Trump and Price do not. Trump and Price also advocate for price transparency. The push for price transparency is growing\, and that has the potential to radically change the healthcare system and the way we practice medicine. As it is\, most physicians don’t know themselves how much things costs and don’t know how to respond to patients when they ask how much something is going to cost. \n“Since the election\, I have truly had no idea what to expect for healthcare other than the overly simplified ‘repeal and replace.’ The lecture gave me a much better sense of what to look for in the coming administration.” -MS1 \nStudents of different political ideologies attended the event\, and there was significant discussion during the Q&A about the choice of Tom Price as health secretary. Some students expressed concern about his priorities\, while others thought him a choice who would represent physicians’ best interests. The lecture prompted numerous questions\, both during the presentation and afterwards. There is a clear understanding that policy will impact future physician practice\, and a strong desire to understand how. \n“Given the fact that it is right before finals and winter break\, I was expecting a much smaller turnout for this event. I was shocked by how many people came – first and second years who were days away from their exams\, third and fourth years who came from their hospital rotations to attend. There were even numerous requests to have the event recorded. There was a clear interest in understanding more about the current policy positions of those about to take leadership and change law. And the event absolutely delivered. Dr. Pines very clearly outlined all of the major policy positions of Trump\, Ryan\, and Price\, and he answered many questions throughout the event.” ~Caroline Jensen\, BRI-GWU President \n“A very informative talk.” – Leah F.\, MS2 \n

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Understanding Health Insurance: The Key to Healthcare Access and Affordability
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture by Benjamin Rush Institute executive director\, Dr. Beth Haynes. Dr. Haynes will explain the differences between health insurance and actual access to healthcare\, and how understanding this is key to understanding the current problems of healthcare access and affordability. \nWe will be serving lunch food. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes spoke on health insurance and how health insurance in its current form is not really insurance. She explained how health insurance prices are set\, and why premiums keep getting higher and higher. Rising premiums are causing younger people to not see health insurance as financially feasible\, leading to more people utilizing Medicaid as their “health insurance.” The loss of underwriting in health insurance policies is a big problem\, along with risk-pooling. It has created a death spiral similar to what Ludwig von Mises talks about when government gets involved in industries it has no business being in. \nDr. Haynes gave an example of how expensive health insurance is from David Goldhill’s book\, Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know About Healthcare is Wrong. An example is someone in her mid 20’s who is making $35k annually\, and how when it is all said and done about $10k goes to paying for just her health insurance. Over the course of her life\, about 2/3rds of her income goes to health insurance alone. Dr. Haynes compared health insurance to auto\, home\, and life insurance\, and talked about how these other types of insurance are different than most health insurance plans. \nAfter Dr. Haynes talk\, the eleven students that attended ended up asking questions and having a discussion for another 45 minutes or so. We talked about solutions to fix this problem\, along with other problems that need to be addressed and ways to focus on allowing innovation in health care and health insurance.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama @ Birmingham—LECTURE: Private Practice: A How-To Guide
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome and encouraged to attend this talk with Dr. Matthew Davis\, an orthopedic surgeon who runs a price-transparent private practice in Birmingham\, Alabama. Dr. Davis is affiliated with St. Vincent’s Birmingham and received his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Davis has been in practice for 16 years and will deliver remarks about his journey as a medical doctor in private practice. \nDr. Davis loves what he does every day\, because it allows him to be hands-on\, solve problems\, and build great relationships with his patients. He enjoys being able to give patients answers\, resolve their ailments\, and put them on a track toward comfort and mobility. He has 10 years of experience working as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon\, helping people by doing everything from ACL repairs to managing osteoarthritis. \nCome find out about Dr. Davis’s reflections on the changing nature of medical care delivery and how his system has been phenomenally successful for both himself and for his patients. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-six (36) students attended the presentation. President Thompson Foy opened the meeting\, thanked everyone for being in attendance\, and provided a brief review of our previous event (screening of a talk delivered by Juliette Madrigal-Dersch). He then introduced our speaker\, Dr. Matt Davis. For about 40 minutes\, Dr. Davis described the difficulties that face physicians in the traditional\, third-party payer healthcare setting. He contrasted this cumbersome model with his own practice\, in which 95% pay with cash out-of-pocket. Finally\, he spent a bit of time discussing the advantages afforded by capitalist\, free market systems. The talk was well-received\, and there were several questions from interested attendees at the end. President Thompson Foy concluded the meeting with a solicitation for membership.

SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine—LECTURE: What the Election Holds for Health Policy and Reform
DESCRIPTION:All are cordially invited to join us for a lunch lecture with Keith Fontenot\, Nonresident Fellow – Economic Studies\, The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. Mr. Fontenot will be at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences to discuss the future of healthcare reform. Mr. Fontenot has unparalleled insight into the development of the Affordable Care Act in the Obama Administration given his previous role as associate director for Health at the Office of Management and Budget. He will speak to future directions of healthcare policy through an economic lens\, considering the possible outcomes with the election of either candidate. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended Mr. Fontenot’s lecture. Keith Fontenot\, a non-resident fellow of Economic Studies at Brookings Institution\, came to George Washington University School of Health Sciences to discuss the current state of the Affordable Care Act and likely first moves in health policy for an elected president. In a thought-provoking and inspiring lunch discussion\, he sat down with first and second year medical students to discuss what to watch for after the election and how medical students can stay engaged as physicians in healthcare policy. \n \nIn his talk\, Fontenot proposed different scenarios for a Clinton versus Trump presidency. In the event of a Clinton presidency\, he believes it unlikely that healthcare legislative reform will be a priority. More likely will be changes to the administrative management of the ACA’s execution. He suggested that this is where we can expect the greatest changes\, and prioritization of specific agendas will be seen in modification to the “administrative dials.” \nIn the event of a Trump presidency\, Fontenot doesn’t think a complete legislative repeal is likely. He doesn’t envision a scenario where millions of newly insured lose their insurance. Instead\, he suggested that the punishment for non-adherence to the various components of the law will be minimized\, and the general commitment to the law will thus be reduced. \nFontenot fielded numerous student questions on the subject of healthcare economics. While discussing different models of payment and care\, he emphasized the idea that “if you’ve seen one market\, you’ve seen one market.” Markets across the country are very different\, and even within states\, there are huge variations in what works and what doesn’t. Given this reality\, it is difficult to compare healthcare models and support a one size fits all option. \nThe most important thing for medical students\, Fontenot said\, is to stay engaged. Medical students must read the news and understand what is going on in healthcare policy. Healthcare policy changes have huge implications for how physicians will be reimbursed in the future\, and future physicians must stay engaged to understand how these changes will impact them and how they can have a voice in the dialogue. \n“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect for this event\, but I was very pleased with how many people came. The students were incredibly engaged and asked many questions throughout the presentation. The presenter encouraged questions throughout and was happy to respond to a question or explain something around policy.” ~Caroline Jensen\, BRI-George Washington University chapter president \n“It is very inspiring to hear from someone who was so entrenched in the politics in the field and who knows so much about health care policy. I was very inspired to read up on what he was talking about.” ~Student\, GWU \n“That was great!!” ~Student\, GWU

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Freedom Healthworks: The Transition to Direct Primary Care
DESCRIPTION:Adam Habig of Freedom Healthworks\nDirect Primary Care: Could it be your business model once you’re a practicing physician? All are welcome to join BRI-Marian University chapter members for refreshments and to hear Adam Habig\, co-founder of Freedom Healthworks speak about what made him interested in Direct Primary Care (DPC)\, what DPC is\, along with how his company is helping doctors in Indiana transition to DPC models. You can watch a short intro video to Freedom Healthworks here. \nAdam Habig is a native of central Indiana with thirteen years of experience innovating within the realm of health care delivery. In 2003\, Mr. Habig co-founded the biosciences technology firm ISPRIT Systems\, which pioneered the use of a sophisticated information technology platform to better diagnose and manage complex chronic illness\, ultimately ascending to the role of Chief Executive Officer of the firm. ISPRIT anticipated the elevation of chronic disease prevention and management as a chief cost control\, ultimately attracting the attention of some of the world’s leading companies within the health insurance and diagnostics fields. \nIn 2013\, observing the rapid changes pervading healthcare delivery\, Mr. Habig co-founded Freedom Healthworks to unleash the innovative potential of direct primary care on a broad scale. Our full service\, turnkey model enables doctors to regain their freedom by joining the rapidly expanding movement to disentangle from the insurance and government-driven payment system. Physicians can once again deliver high quality care free of interference while setting prices their patients can afford. Patients regain the freedom to purchase routine primary care and preventive services (90% of all medical care) directly from their doctors for clear\, standardized prices\, while relegating insurance to its traditional role as a safeguard against catastrophic events. A licensed attorney\, Mr. Habig maintains an independent law practice in addition to his leadership duties with Freedom Healthworks. He currently resides in Indianapolis with his wife\, Megan. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Adam Habig\, co-founder of Freedom Healthworks\, spoke to eight event attendees about Direct Primary Care (DPC). He talked about DPC and what it offered doctors and patients. He had two cutouts showing all the regulations in the US Healthcare System\, along with a table of the top 20 concerns of physicians for 2016. DPC gets rid of most of those regulations in the current healthcare system\, along with most of the concerns for 2016 physicians. He spoke on how his parents (both physicians) were considering retirement in the prime of their medical careers. They were burned out with not being able to practice medicine the way they wanted too. Adam and his brother Chris decided to focus their time on creating Freedom Healthworks. Their company focuses on transitioning doctors of all ages into DPC practices. They have come up with a template for doctors allowing them to reduce some of the main challenges to starting up a DPC clinic: finding patients\, business decisions\, administrative work. Westfield Premier Physicians (http://www.westfieldpremier.com/index.html)\, is Freedom Healthworks pilot clinic\, and they look forward to proving what DPC clinics can provide doctors and patients. \n“I thought the event went great. I would have liked to see more people attend to hear what Adam had to say. Direct Primary Care (DPC) is an idea that interests many people when they hear the message. The people that did come to the event really enjoyed it. A couple people attending didn’t know much about DPC\, but they became very engaged and asked questions\, excited to learn more.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian chapter founder & president.

SUMMARY:OUHCOM-Dublin—LECTURE: Free Market Medicine: A Cash Based Alternative
DESCRIPTION:Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD at OUHCOM\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-four students attended Dr. Madrigal’s presentation. She talked about her cash based practice in Texas\, where basic health needs are handled in a direct patient-doctor relationship\, and health insurance is used for what it was originally intended: catastrophic events. When a doctor and patients are in charge of costs and treatments\, the doctor is empowered to negotiate with lab companies\, imaging companies\, and pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare service providers to keep patient costs down. Dr. Madrigal described how her model of direct primary care works for all of her patients: the really sick\, the really healthy\, the rich\, the poor\, and the middle class.  Dr. Madrigal has removed government interference\, over-regulation\, and red tape out of the picture to keeps costs down\, care quality high\, patients happy and physicians happy. \n“Dr. Madrigal’s talk was very informative. I came to medical school to become a Primary Care Physician\, but have recently been discouraged. She re-lit the fire in me to pursue this dream and showed me that it is possible to to be a PCP without having to deal with the ACA. Her talk also persuaded me to attend a DPC conference in Dallas\, Texas.” ~ Jacob Chevlin\, OMS I and BRI member \nAll students\, faculty\, and practicing physicians are welcome to attend BRI-OUHCOM/Dublin’s event on cash based medical practices. We welcome Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD and BRI board member\, to speak about her cash based Med-Peds practice in rural Texas. Having this event early in the year may be important in giving our new M1’s a refreshing\, new perspective on the broad range of Primary Care practices and encouraging future physicians to look into Family Medicine as a enjoyable career option. \nHaving this event early in the year may be important in giving our new OMS1’s a refreshing\, new perspective on the broad range of Primary Care practices and encouraging future physicians to look into Family Medicine as a enjoyable career. She will place an emphasis on a free market approach to healthcare which allows her to bypass government red tape. \nWe encourage practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals to attend to get information on how to scale a cash based medical practice model like Dr. Madrigal’s to an urban setting. \nRefreshments will be served. \nThis article is insightful reading preparation for the discussion. \n

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine\, Columbus—LECTURE: A Free Market Approach to Healthcare: Cash Based Medical Practices
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch on cash based medical practices\nAll students\, faculty\, and practicing physicians are welcome to attend our inaugural 2016-17 BRI-OSUMC event on cash based medical practices. \nWe encourage practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals to attend to get information on how to scale a cash based medical practice model like Dr. Madrigal’s to an urban setting. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 40 students attended. Overall\, our event was a success. The presentation Dr. Madrigal gave was exactly what we had in mind. In spite of some technical difficulties\, these issues did not really take away from the message we were trying convey. \nMost people were receptive to the ideas and especially because she made her lifestyle seem very appealing and her patient population so grateful and well served. Most of the audience had good questions and seemed to benefit greatly from seeing Dr. Madrigal’s perspective. She was receptive to answering many of their questions afterwards.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama\, Birmingham—LECTURE SCREENING: Why BRI supports free market healthcare policy\, with Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend BRI-UABSOM chapter’s free lecture screening on free market healthcare policy: \nJules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD on free market healthcare policy\nWhy BRI supports a free market approach to healthcare policy\, featuring Jules Madrigal-Dersch.\nIn March 2016\, BRI board member and med-peds doctor Juliette Madrigal-Dersch\, MD\, spoke to BRI student leaders at our annual leadership conference about her joy in running an independent cash practice in rural Texas\, and why free market healthcare policies make sense. \nAt this meeting\, our hope is to educate potential members about BRI’s mission in support of free market healthcare solutions\, and to encourage BRI-UABSOM chapter involvement and membership. \nWe will provide light refreshments and snacks encouraging guests to bring their own lunch. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The BRI-UAB chapter screened a pre-recorded presentation delivered by Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch at the 2015-2016 BRI Leadership Conference held at American Enterprise Institute in March 2016. Dr. Madrigal-Dersch spoke about why she chose to deliver market-based care rather than follow the existing insurance-based care model. \nThe event opened with a welcome to the attendees from UAB BRI officers\, and quickly proceeded to the lecture screening. The lecture was part explanatory and part testimonial as to how and why Dr. Madrigal-Dersch chose to enter into the direct primary care model\, and the benefits the model provides to herself\, her family\, and her patients. \nAfter the screening\, the floor was opened up for questions. Seeing none\, Thompson Foy\, UAB-BRI president\, proceeded to inform the attendees about the next UAB BRI meeting on October 26th\, 2016\, and closed the meeting. \n“We hoped to have more attendees\, but we believe that the people who did come found the event both informative and enjoyable. Among attendees\, the message of the lecture screening was very well received.” ~Thompson Foy\, BRI-UAB chapter founder & president \n

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What About the Poor? How to Win the Healthcare Debate Without Selling Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivered a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians. \nIt is important that we undertake the task of engaging our future physicians. What are they learning about health policy? Given the state of higher education today\, it’s no surprise that health policy instruction at medical schools is government-centric. But what is surprising is how little formal policy instruction students receive\, which presents a great opportunity to interject the voice of reason into the conversation. Benjamin Rush Institute is doing exactly that. In just the fall semester of 2016\, we reached 1300 medical student5s. Come hear how we are presenting the ideas of individual rights and limited government in a way that even liberal medical students are wiling to consider these alternatives.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn't—Getting Medical Costs Under Control
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivers a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn’t—Getting Medical Costs Under Control. \nThere is much talk about how to control medical costs. Medical inflation continues to outpace general inflation. Why this is happening has much to do with the fact that what is called “health insurance” really isn’t insurance. We argue that coerced wealth distribution is immoral\, but this argument does not resonate with everyone. Being abel to also argue the economic aspects of healthcare can strengthen your ability to make the case for freedom in medical care. Come learn about the nature of insurance\, what it is and isn’t\, why current health policy is doomed to fail\, and what better alternatives exist.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — LECTURE: Dr. Richard Gunderman "The American Physician Who Made the Biggest Difference"
DESCRIPTION:The American Physician Who Made the Biggest Difference\nDo you think you know a physician who “made the biggest difference?” Want to know who this is? All are welcome to hear a lecture presentation by the esteemed Richard Gunderman\, MD\, PhD from Indiana University. BRI-Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine is sponsoring this event. RSVPs are appreciated to ensure sufficient refreshments for all. \nLast year\, Dr. Gunderson enthralled us with a lecture on “How Freedom Enriches Medicine and Life.” He is an engaging and enlightening speaker\, and the evening promises to be inspiring! \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seventeen students enjoyed lunch and another edifying and entertaining lecture by Dr. Gunderman. The subject of Dr. Gunderman’s talk was none other than Dr. Benjamin Rush himself! We learned about Rush’s life\, interests\, ideology\, and accomplishments. It was a great talk about the man who is the symbol of BRI. \n \nBenjamin Rush graduated from what is now Princeton by age 14. He became the first chemistry professor in the colonies and is known as the father of psychiatry\, because he wrote the first book on mental illness. He also opened the first free clinic in the US. He was one of five Founders who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Dr. Rush was the inspiration behind Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. He trained Louis and Clark in some medical knowledge to prepare them for their expedition. Dr. Rush was friends with Thomas Jefferson\, John Adams\, and Benjamin Franklin. \n \nThese were just some of the things on Benjamin Rush’s long list of accolades. But in a more ideological lens\, he was a strong lover of liberty. He believed in letting people develop to their full potential without government interference. He was a huge advocate for his patients. He had radical views for his time: he was against the death penalty\, against racism\, and advocated education for women and African Americans. He was also deeply religious\, helping found the African Methodist Episcopal Church. \n“Dr. Gunderman is a great speaker and he is able to keep the audience entertained. He seems to be very interested in the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and the overall goal of informing students on topics not normally covered in medical school curriculums.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian president \nBenjamin Rush’s legacy is grounded in medicine\, politics\, religion\, and activism. He had a passion for everything he did\, and made the best of the time while he was alive. Dr. Gunderman finished his talk by saying we as doctors should be taking a more active role in our communities\, like Benjamin Rush. \nThere were four MS1’s in attendance today\, and I already heard back from one of them saying she was interested in becoming more involved with BRI. Over the past few weeks with Patch Adams\, Poverty Inc.\, and now Dr. Gunderman more MS1’s seem to have BRI on their radar. We had more attendees this year for Dr. Gunderman as opposed to last year.

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine — LECTURE: Dr. Timothy Law "Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play" or Medical Fee for Service
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Law Lecture: “Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play\,” or Medical Fee for Service\n\nDr. Timothy Law will be talking about his practice as a rural medical practitioner. He will be discussing his work with the Amish community and how he has formed a very successful rural practice built on a medical fee for service model. Dr. Law is a Assistant Professor and Medical Director for CTRU\, & SHAPe as well as a Associate Director of Rural and Urban Scholars Pathway.\n\n \nPOST-DEBATE SUMMARY: Forty students attended this event\, with 25 signing up for more information about BRI. Dr. Law discussed the benefits of directing his own practice\, especially one that is rural and that deals with the Amish population. He talked about the costs and fees associated with owning your own practice and ways to maximize patient care while also making a decent living. It was really interesting to learn about how he interacts with his patients and some of the payment forms that he has received\, which is a benefit to his more informal rural practice. He has also been able to get many of our medical students involved in this experience\, giving them hands-on clinical and treatment experience. Dr. Law is a great mentor for our school\, and we always enjoy having him speak to learn the different ways we can provide excellent patient care\, while still making a great living.

SUMMARY:Chicago Medical School @ RFUMS — LECTURE: The Effects of Healthcare Policy on the Patient-Provider Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Ansell on healthcare policy and the patient-provider relationship\nHealthcare Policy and the Patient-Provider Relationship\nJoin the Chicago Medical School BRI chapter for a lunch lecture with David A. Ansell\, MD\, MPH. Dr. Ansell draws upon his considerable experience in urban healthcare to illustrate the ways in which US health policy affects the relationship healthcare providers have with their patients. His talk will hopefully open the eyes of future healthcare providers to the problems facing our health system today\, and provide them a base from which they can find their own voice in addressing those issues as their careers progress. \nFrom Dr. Ansell’s bio: Dr. David Ansell is an Internal Medicine physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago\, Illinois. His work with others on the problem of patient dumping brought national attention to this issue and resulted in landmark national legislation to end this practice. In 1995\, Dr. Ansell moved to Chicago’s Sinai Health System\, the State of Illinois’ largest private provider of indigent care and one of the foremost safety-net health systems in the U.S.\, as the Chairperson of Internal Medicine. At Sinai\, he was responsible for the creation of the Sinai Urban Health Institute\, which has become one of the nation’s leading centers for research and interventions to understand and eliminate health inequities.  \nRead more about Dr. Ansell. \nThis event takes place in the CENTRAL TIME ZONE. Please park in the North Parking Lot and enter at the North Auditorium Entrance. We will be serving lunch refreshments. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-one students attended this fascinating and inspiring presentation. Dr. Ansell opened his talk by speaking at length about his personal experience as a resident of Cook County Hospital in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He encountered nearly unfathomable (by today’s standards) levels of patient neglect and racial and socioeconomic disparity\, which helped to shape his career and caused him to become a champion for THE undeserved and neglected populations in Chicago. \nDr. Ansell shared his hope that future healthcare providers will not rest and simply accept the status quo\, but will make activism for patient rights a core part of their future practice. He urged us to keep our eyes and our hearts open and to never forget that medicine is about treating people – no matter their background\, race\, affluence\, or any other societal category. He reminded us that it is our duty to seek alternatives to the current healthcare model that will bring more equitable care\, more affordable care\, and better quality care to people of all walks of life. To simply work as a cog in the machine without thought to the why and the how of our patient care efforts is unconscionable. \n“I thought Dr. Ansell’s talk exceeded expectations. I was initially worried because Dr. Ansell is a prominent voice for a national health program and I anticipated that there could be some commentary that would be at odds with the stated mission of BRI. However\, Dr. Ansell did not make his opinion regarding how to address the issues we discussed a prominent part of his presentation; in fact\, his stance on the future of healthcare policy only came out during the question and discussion portion of the event. He spent much more time turning the narrative toward what we as individuals could begin to do now to address disparity and inequity\, rather than opining on our country’s future direction in healthcare.” ~Theodore Peterson\, BRI-Chicago Medical School at RFUMS chapter president \n  \nTESTIMONIALS from Chicago Medical School at RFUMS: \n“I felt like [Dr. Ansell is] speaking directly to and about my family and me.”\n“I often feel discouraged about our healthcare system\, but [Dr. Ansell’s] talk was uplifting and encouraging.” \n“It is so nice to know that there are physicians out there who make activism and patients’ rights a central part of their practice.” \n

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine: LECTURE — Dr. Patch Adams on the doctor-patient relationship
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Patch Adams on the Doctor-Patient Relationship\nDr. Patch Adams\nNote: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Food will be provided. RSVPs are greatly appreciated. The Theater will be full! \nIn partnership with the Arnold P. Gold Foundation\, Marian University center for Organizational Ethics\, and the Marian University office of Institutional Advancement\, BRI student leaders from Marian University are proud to present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the celebrated Dr. Patch Adams. Dr. Adams\, noted doctor (he got into medical school without an undergraduate degree!)\, comedian\, humanitarian\, social activist\, and subject of the film Patch Adams with Robin Williams\, will speak about himself\, the doctor-patient relationship\, and how he believes the doctor-patient relationship should be experienced. \nPatch Adams speaks at a co-sponsored BRI event before over 500 people.\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Over 500 people came to the Wheeler-Stokely Mansion — and even filled an overflow room! — on the Marian University campus to hear a lively and entertaining talk by Dr. “Patch” Adams. He spoke about “The Joy of Caring.” Patch started off talking about how he came to be a doctor and the Gesundheit! Institute he started early in his career. The clinic that he started with two other doctors was free for all patients\, and the patients could stay for as long as they wanted. The stipulation was that they had to help do work while at the clinic and participate in different activities. \nHe then talked about various problems in healthcare currently\, including problems with education\, how hospitals are run\, burdensome insurance companies\, physician burnout\, and views on mental illness in society. \n“The event was a great success. Researching Dr. Patch Adams before the event I knew there were things on which he and BRI would disagree. With that said\, there were many things he and BRI would completely agree on. Ultimately\, we both have the same end goal in mind: improving the doctor-patient relationship.” ~Trenton Schmale\, president BRI-Marian \nDr. Patch Adams\nDr. Adams finished with ways physicians can prevent burnout. His main ideas behind it all included improving the doctor-patient relationship. Some of his examples were: love all your patients (build friendships with them)\, consider yourself a hero through your acts of care for your patients (builds self-esteem)\, being real with your faith (actually doing what God wants you to do)\, doing good things leads to good things in return (karma)\, using your brain to think of solutions to problems (eg. his solution to the broken healthcare system). \nHis talk was very insightful\, and I think it’s safe to say all the attendees really enjoyed listening to him. After his presentation\, we held a post event reception and book signing. About 200 people attended this part of the evening. \n  \nPhoto credits Chad Curtis and Jeremy Vollmer\, executive event producer\, Savahannah Lien\, all BRI-Marian chapter leaders. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Dr. Jason Eberl\, Foundation for a Natural Right to Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Marian University’s BRI chapter cordially invites you to attend a lecture with Dr. Jason Eberl\, a Marian University faculty member. Dr. Eberl will be making the case for a natural right to health and healthcare—opening discussion of the question to what extent the state\, versus society in general\, is the guarantor of this right. \nDr. Jason Eberl\nFrom Dr. Eberl’s webpage: \n“I primarily conduct research concerning the implications of Thomas Aquinas’s metaphysical account of human personhood and natural law ethics to various issues in bioethics. I also have interests in philosophy of religion\, virtue ethics\, and philosophy of mind. I graduated with my Ph.D. from Saint Louis University….more \nPlease RSVP to ensure enough food and refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: An intimate group of six (6) students got to hear Dr. Eberl’s personalized lecture on a natural right o healthcare. Dr. Jason Eberl\, Semler Endowed Chair for Medical Ethics at MUCOM\, talked about his research and the healthcare proposal he wrote for the state of Indiana in the early 2000’s. Because it was a smaller group\, we discussed our views about whether we considered health and healthcare a natural right. We also talked about the problems of translating ethics into policy. It was a great talk\, and the all the people that attend enjoyed what was discussed.

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine—LUNCH LECTURE: Direct Primary Care Business Model with Dr. Josh Umbehr
DESCRIPTION:Direct Primary Care Business Model\, with Dr. Josh Umbehr\n Dr. Josh Umbehr addresses the BRI Student Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC.[/caption] \nDr. Umbehr will talk to students about his direct primary care business model during a lunch meeting. RSVP is not required. The plan is to give students exposure to and a better understanding of direct primary care. This will prepare them for the ensuing debate that evening about the single-payer health care model. Food provided for this event is generously funded by the Family Medicine Interest Group. Thank you! \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-two students attended a pre-debate lunch lecture—with food generously provided by the Family Medicine Interest Group—featuring Dr. Josh Umbehr. Dr. Umbehr gave a brief introduction to direct primary care and how much value AtlasMD brings to their patients. When students asked how the cost savings were possible\, Dr. Josh clarified that he does not work with insurance and that many of the methods he ueses to save his patients money are available to all physicians. For example\, most states allow physicians to buy pharmaceuticals wholesale and sell them to their patients. Dr. Josh did emphasize\, however\, that direct primary care is not a replacement for insurance; catastrophic insurance is still recommended. \n“This was our most well attended lunch meeting and was received very well! There was a completely full room; more students showed up than we expected. The students loved Dr. Josh and had many great questions!” ~John Flo\, BRI-SLU chapter president \nMore students than expected showed up\, and the Q&A segment went all the way to the end of our official reservation time. One student asked what the downside to the direct primary care model is\, because it sounded so good. Dr. Josh answered that while the lifestyle of an AtlasMD physician is fantastic\, there is risk for abuse when giving patients full access to you as a physician. You have to put in the hours to work with these patients who may call excessively\, but in this model\, you’re actually able to do it! \n“I can see how this business model would work really well for primary care. I thought Dr. Josh’s presentation was very well done. I’m still confused about how he can get drugs for so cheap.” ~SLU student attendee\n\n“Dr. Umbehr gave the best 45 minute lunch discussion in the history of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine! I really enjoyed the description of how he has built his practice\, Atlas MD\, into a well-known direct primary care provider. I believe his methods are the most affordable and pragmatic for the future of healthcare in the United States.” ~SLU student attendee \nOverall\, students were very intrigued by the direct primary care model\, which many of them had not heard of before. A few students stayed after to ask Dr. Josh even more questions.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook School of Medicine: Lecture — How Markets Benefit the Poor
DESCRIPTION:How Markets Help the Poor\nAll are welcome to attend this FREE lunch lecture with Dr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of BRI. Dr. Haynes has studied and lectured extensively on this topic. Citing historical data and modern examples\, she clarifies why BRI’s position is that free enterprise\, more than any other approach\, is the best way to ensure the most optimal outcomes for the most people\, at the lowest prices and highest quality. \nPlease read her blog post: To advocate for free markets is to advocate for the poor \nValet parking is available. We look forward to seeing you here! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Six students attended the lecture\, asking interesting questions and engaging with the topic of free enterprise as it relates to the poor. For several of the students it was an heretofore unexplored issue. Dr. Beth Haynes gave an excellent presentation on how healthcare markets benefit the poor. In the post-presentation discussion there ensued an interesting exchange on the wisdom of government anti-smoking efforts\, and the unseen consequences that could result from such “good-intentioned” policies. \n“This was a unique event as there haven’t really been any talks this entire year devoted to healthcare policy.” ~Daniel Milyavsky\, BRI-Stony Brook president

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Mount Sinai: Lecture — Why We Can't Fix Healthcare Until We Know What Health Insurance Is and Is Not
DESCRIPTION:Why We Can’t Fix Healthcare Until We Know What Health Insurance Is and Is Not\nAll are welcome to attend this free evening lecture sponsored by BRI and East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP). Snacks and appetizers will be served. RSVPs are greatly appreciated! Click here to register\, or on the green Registration button\, above right. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director will discuss the importance of understanding the role and limitations of health insurance. She will detail how improper understanding of insurance leads to poor health outcomes. For each attendee\, $5 will be donated to Mount Sinai’s student run health clinic. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Mount Sinai BRI and EHHOP together drew an audience of 20 students to this lunch lecture on the idea of health insurance for medical students. The event was focused on how exactly health insurance as we currently know it is structured\, and how that differs from other forms of insurance that we encounter in life such as auto or home insurance. Dr. Haynes discussed several terms that are commonly used when discussing insurance for the benefit of the audience. The main point was the health insurance is not exactly insurance\, but rather “prepaid healthcare.” Dr. Haynes went into further detail about how viewing health insurance as traditional “insurance” is harmful and unsustainable\, and how recent legislation has only served to exacerbate this problem. \nAfter the presentation\, students asked several insightful questions and created a floor for discussion about the issues that were raised. The event also raised $100 for EHHOP\, the student-run clinic to help the uninsured\, as BRI pledged $5 donation for each student attendee. During the event\, Insomnia cookies and milk were served.

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine: Lecture — The Economics of Healthcare Insurance: Supply and Demand
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Food and beverages will be served\, so RSVPs are highly appreciated to ensure there’s enough. \nCome see Healthcare Insurance from a different angle — an economic angle! \nThe Economics of Healthcare Insurance: Supply & Demand\nSuyang Li\, M2\, OSU College of Medicine\nALL are welcome to attend our FREE lunch lecture on the economics of healthcare insurance\, delivered by Suyang Li\, an M2 student with an economics background. Mr. Li has offered to deliver a lecture on supply and demand for OSU students who might not have gotten an introductory course to micro- and/or macroeconomics. He is then going to tie it into healthcare insurance costs. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty (20) interested medical students came to BRI-OSU’s lunch lecture to hear about healthcare economics\, presented by fellow student\, Suyang Li. \n \n \nHave you ever wondered about what drives healthcare costs? At our event\, Suyang Li taught fellow students about the economics driving the cost of healthcare insurance. The Benjamin Rush Institute Health Policy Interest Group invited this member of our medical class to talk about the economics of healthcare\, their burden\, and possible solutions! Food and refreshments were provided for attendees. \nDuring the event Suyang was able to engage the audience through an interactive presentation that allowed students to think through the impact of different economic policies. He was able to deliver a fundamental lecture on macroeconomics before shifting the focus to health management for students who had a shallow economics background. \n“The event went very well and exceeded expectations with regard to turnout. It seemed like students enjoyed the lecture and got a lot out of it and attendance seems to be rising at the BRI events.” ~Mit Shah\, BRI-OSU chapter \n

SUMMARY:State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate College of Medicine: Lecture — The History of Government in US Medicine
DESCRIPTION:ALL are welcome to attend a lecture by Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute on the history of government in US medicine. Government involvement in medicine is not a new thing\, and policies from the past are currently influencing the healthcare climate today. In what ways are government policies in healthcare beneficial\, and in what ways detrimental? And what can be done? \nFood will be served with generous donations from Med Council and University Council. RSVPs are greatly appreciated in order to have enough for all. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty students attended our lunch lecture on US healthcare. Dr. Haynes provided a very interesting talk about the history of government involvement in medicine dating back to the 19th century. She described the regulations that have increased over the years\, their benefits\, and even more importantly\, their unintended consequences. She explained how well-intended regulations on healthcare providers\, insurers\, and the marketplace as a whole\, has unintentionally increased costs while stifling innovation. She also discussed some solutions about how to help the medical field flourish so that we can achieve better quality of care for all. She then had a ten minute Q & A session. The talk was very well received. \n“The event went very well and I was very pleased. The environment at Downstate can at times be somewhat hostile towards solutions that do not hinge on government intervention. However\, there was a great deal of “head nodding” throughout Dr. Haynes’ talk\, and several interested students remained afterward to ask Dr. Haynes more questions. Several fellow students said they were very pleased and are looking forward to the next event.” ~Mary Hahn\, BRI-SUNY Downstate president and event organizer \nSeveral students were very interested and asked for BRI video links to Dr. Haynes’ previous talk about the subject. Many found this information very interesting\, but didn’t have a great deal of background in the subject matter\, and would like to watch or listen again so that it could “fully sink in.” Others added that these talks are a fantastic source of information for our class\, and they hope we will have more talks like this. \nTESTIMONIAL:\n“That talk was great! When is your next event?” ~R.V.\, MS2

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine: Lecture — Dr. Josh Umbehr on Direct Primary Care
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Lunch will be provided\, and RSVPs are appreciated! \nDo you want to become a doctor so you can spend less time with patients\, be restricted by insurance companies\, and fill out lots of paperwork? Neither do we. Come learn about how Direct Primary Care is changing the patient-physician relationship for the better! The Benjamin Rush Institute Health Policy Interest Group invited Dr. Josh Umbehr from Atlas MD\, based in Wichita\, KS\, to talk about this alternative payment model. \n“Dr. Josh” has been an advocate and practitioner in the DPC model for many years\, and is a frequent speaker at BRI and other free market medicine events. He was a featured speaker at the BRI Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC. \n  \nLinda Pan\, Dr. Josh\, Brennan Wright\, and Nic Miller of OSU\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Sixty students and members of the community came to hear Dr. Josh Umbehr from AtlasMD give an informal presentation about Direct Primary Care. He started off with an explanation of what DPC is and wowed the crowd with the low prices he can get when ordering medications in bulk and contracting for labs. He took questions throughout the presentation from a variety of attendees. Some expressed that they were still skeptical how the DPC model could work and how he could make prices so cheap\, so he explained that aspect of his model again. One audience member was a primary care physician herself\, and asked many informed questions. \n \nAs students started to trickle out about an hour later\, the formal part of the evening ended\, and Dr. Josh stayed around to talk to some remaining people and answer additional questions. \nTESTIMONIAL: ‘I’m completely sold on DPC. I’m just wondering if you could tell me a little more about your lifestyle and work/life balance.” ~An audience member

SUMMARY:University of Colorado School of Medicine: Lecture — Direct Primary Care
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Mountain Time zone. \nAll are invited to BRI-University of Colorado School of Medicine’s first event for the academic year 2015-2016. Please share this opportunity to hear about Direct Primary Care (DPC) with fellow students and faculty. RSVPs are appreciated. Lunch will be provided. \nDr. Lisa Davidson of Insight Primary Care will be speaking about the overarching concepts and practice of Direct Primary Care (DPC) in healthcare\, and her personal experiences with it. The mission statement from Dr. Davidson’s website sums up many aspects of direct primary care: “Insight is defined as the capacity for accurate and deep understanding of a person or thing. Our mission is to create a medical home for individuals and families that is easily accessible\, cost-conscious\, encourages collaboration\, and promotes wellness. We welcome everyone to our practice regardless of race\, religion\, culture or sexual identity.” \nIn 2014\, UCDenver\, Anschutz Medical Campus was chosen as the location for Benjamin Rush Institute’s annual Student Leadership Conference. It was an exceptional event\, attended by 29 students from around the country\, and featured a 2-on-2 debate on the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). \nIn keeping with our strong chapter history and reputation\, UCDenver’s BRI Chapter will be looking for energetic and interested students for volunteer officer positions for the academic year 2015-2016\, and the chance to attend next spring’s Student Leadership Conference (location & dates TBA). \nPaid parking is available on the Anschutz Medical Campus; please see this link for more information. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:  Fifteen students attended our 1-hour lunch lecture with Dr. Davidson. She spoke for about 40 minutes about direct primary care in general\, and her experiences specifically with the DPC model. She also provided a great list of resources for students interested in more information. Unexpectedly to me\, she brought a colleague of hers who has worked at another DPC company to give his perspective as well after her talk. We had about 15 minutes for questions at the end of the talk.

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine: Breakfast Lecture — Dr. Josh Umbehr on Concierge and Personalized Medicine
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Breakfast food will be served. RSVPs are appreciated for accurate food count. \nDr. Umbehr is traveling from Kansas to speak to the BRI-OUHCOM Chapter about his personalized medicine practice which specializes in “concierge” medicine. This is a new concept for many students\, so it should be interesting to hear what everyone has to say about it. \n“Dr. Josh” Umbehr from Atlas MD\, based in Wichita\, KS\, has been an advocate and practitioner in the DPC model for many years\, and is a frequent speaker at BRI and other free market medicine events. He was a featured speaker at the BRI Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC. Come learn about how Direct Primary Care is changing the patient-physician relationship for the better! \n  \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Sixty students from BRI and Family Medicine Club attended this breakfast lecture — a BRI first!! They clearly enjoyed the food that got them to a 7am presentation! \n \n \nDr. Josh Umbehr from Atlas MD in Wichita\, Kansas came to OU-HCOM to speak to first- and second-year medical students about practicing concierge medicine. This is a topic that was very foreign to our students\, so it was really interesting to hear how Dr. Umbehr deals with the positives and negatives associated with this form of healthcare. \n“It was great to learn about this topic that we don’t know much about.” ~Medical student attendee\, OU-HCOM \nThere were many questions\, but some of the more popular questions centered around how the system works\, how patients like the system\, how Dr. Umbehr is reimbursed\, and how he is able to balance his personal life with his practice. It was amazing to learn about the multiple ways Dr. Umbehr saves his patients money. For a small fee per year for each patient\, and by purchasing his own resources in bulk\, Dr. Umbehr is able to afford effective and preventive healthcare to his patients at an extremely reduced cost. This was a very important point that was stressed throughout his talk\, especially given the enactment of the Affordable Care Act and the goals to cut down on medical waste and overspending. Dr. Umbehr also stayed an hour after his talk to answer individual students’ questions. BRI and the Family Medicine Club co-sponsored the event and provided breakfast for attendees because this was an early morning lecture at 7am. \n“Wow\, Dr. Josh is totally down to earth. It was great to hear his story.” ~Medical student attendee\, OU-HCOM \nDr. Josh Umbehr did a wonderful job of engaging the audience\, especially at 7am in the morning! He was very real and down to earth and was great at informing our students about this foreign type of medical care known as “Concierge Medicine.” It was a great event overall\, and we received positive feedback from many of the attendees. \n
