SUMMARY:Penn State College of Medicine—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care as a Solution for Health Care Reform?
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr will speak about his experience starting his own Direct Pay Primary Care practice and how he sees this model as a possible solution to healthcare reform. Penn State faculty are underwriting refreshments for this event. \nAffectionately known as “Dr. Josh” by medical students who know him\, Dr. Umbehr has been a frequent speaker at BRI events\, and at a past leadership conference. He was also featured on BRI’s Next Generation Medicine podcast Episode #3.\nYou can learn more about Dr. Josh and AtlasMD on the AtlasMD website. \nI was born and raised in Alma\, Kansas where I met my high school sweetheart\, Lisa\, while playing football at Manhattan High School and followed her to Kansas State University. While there\, I majored in human nutritional sciences with a minor in biology. I also did extensive research on the effects of vitamin A on lung cancer. I then graduated from The University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed my family medicine residency at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. After completing training and becoming a board certified Family Physician\, I opened Atlas MD\, a practice that I had been dreaming about for nearly a decade. Atlas MD represents my ideal medical practice where I’m able to shrug off the burdens and restrictions of government and insurance regulation so I can focus solely on my patients and their needs.” ~Dr. Josh Umbehr\, from the AtlasMD website \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Forty-five students and faculty attended this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr hosted a question and answer discussion around Direct Primary Care. He shared his life as a DPC physician and how he sees DPC impacting the future of healthcare. The event was well attended and guest ranged from medical students\, to residents\, to the Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. \n“I was thrilled with Dr. Umbehr’s performance and the event was a perfect inaugural event for our chapter. It was well attended and well received.” ~Nate Williams\, BRI-PSUCOM president \n“Until this event\, I had no idea what Direct Primary Care was.” ~Medical Student attendee\n“While I had previously heard about Direct Primary Care\, our Health Systems curriculum never covered it and that knowledge gap was filled today by Dr. Umbehr.” ~Medical Student attendee \nPictured from left to right: Grant Owens-Treasurer\, Nate Williams-President\, Dr. Josh Umbehr\, Mike Goldenberg-Vice President

SUMMARY:University of California-Santa Cruz (UCSC)—PANEL: Direct Primary Care with Dr. Beth Haynes and Dr. Jeannine Marie Rodems
DESCRIPTION:Beth Haynes\, MD\, BRI’s medical director will participate on a 2-person panel discussion with Dr. Jeannine Marie Rodems on Direct Primary Care. \nThis event will begin with introductions at 7pm. \n7:05 – 7:20 Theoretical (Economics/Legislative) aspects of DPC from Dr. Haynes\n7:20 – 7:35 Practical aspects of DPC from Dr. Rodems (specifically opening and maintaining Santa Cruz DPC)\n7:35 – 7:55 15-20 Q&A with prepared questions\n7:55 – 9:00 pm Open questions from the audience \nThis event is free and parking is available at Parking Lot 107. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five students attended. Dr. Haynes presented on the concept of direct pay as opposed to third-party payer models. She discussed entities like the Surgery Center of OK\, Oregon Coast Dermatology\, Nayarana Health and Aravind Eye Care in India. Dr. Rodems talked about her DPC model and the DPC movement\, explaining how she is able to provide better care at more affordable cost. The event organizer then asked several questions formulated from anti-DPC articles she had read. These were the really fun questions as they were easily dispelled by explaining the inaccurate understanding many DPC detractors have\, and their failure to acknowledge just how broken our current primary care is. \nScheduled to last from 7:30 to 9pm\, no one even noticed the time until almost 10pm when we needed to be out of the room. The audience consisted primarily of YAL and College Republicans interested in healthcare\, but a couple of pre-med students also attended\, excited for the opportunity to learn more about positive solutions that did not involve more government. \n

SUMMARY:Conference on Global Transformation: POSTER PRESENTATION with Beth Haynes\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Beth Haynes\, MD\, BRI medical director participated in the Conference for Global Transformation\,  a 3-day international event held in Monterey\, CA. Her poster\, Clichés\, Memes\, and Euphemisms in Healthcare was accepted for exhibit in a main hall and was designed to promote and foster open dialogue and communication about healthcare. \nThe poster’s purpose:\n“Far too often we use words without clarity. Or\, we assume our meaning is the same as other’s. At other times\, we use words to signal rather than to deepen understanding or participate in shared inquiry. In politics especially\, this is frequently the case. And yet\, our best chance at inventing solutions which heal rather than divide is through authentic communication. As a first step in up-grading our conversations\, please help me identify explore the clichés\, memes and euphemisms in our current debate over healthcare\, and maybe even create 5th field conversations in the world of Adult as Possibility.” ~Dr. Beth Haynes \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 750 people attended The Conference for Global Transformation\, an international event with the purpose of exploring ways people can work together to improve themselves and the state of the world. \nFrom Dr. Beth Haynes: \nMy poster invited participants to examine the way in which we use language as we engage in the healthcare debate. \nWhich words invite and which shut down meaningful discourse? Which words are used without clear or mutually agreed upon definitions? What can we do/say to improve understanding and communication\, rather than continuing to talk past one another? \nOver the course of two hours\, I was able stimulate dialogue on how we can upgrade our healthcare policy conversations—both as individuals and as a nation. Conference attendees’ political leaning is generally quite liberal\, so this was a fabulous opportunity to make the case for the importance of including alternative perspectives in deliberations about the future of healthcare in the US and throughout the world. \nI was able to connect with several physicians\, all of whom are active at their local level\, and are either searching for or working to create better solutions. \nI also connected with the founder of Civic Series\, a non-profit aimed at educating young adults about important issues facing the world. Thus far the series has reached out to and engaged millennials primarily from a liberal perspective\, but the founder is genuinely interested in engaging individuals from a broad range of perspectives. In addition to offering to assist her with identifying conservative/libertarian speakers\, I will be connecting her with America’s Future Foundation so the two organizations can look at how they can collaborate. \nOverall\, the poster was well received and generated thoughtful conversations about how to best approach the challenge of improving healthcare policy.”

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture with Dr. Amy Walsh\, an established Direct Primary Care (DPC) doctor in Raleigh\, NC. Please RSVP via the link\, below. \n  \nIn spite of the growing number of physician testimonials touting the value of DPC\, many med students are still unfamiliar with Direct Primary Care as a successful medical delivery model. Please join us to hear Dr. Walsh’s story. Dr. Walsh trained at Georgetown\, went in to family medicine and worked part-time as an employed physician for 15+ years before seeing the light of DPC. In her own words\, “I opened my own DPC practice in 2015 AND HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER with my career.” \nPlease visit Dr. Walsh’s website: Doctor Direct (DoctorDirectMD.com) \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Amy Walsh\, is established family medicine physician who has been practicing in the Raleigh\, NC area for over 20 years. She opened her own Direct Primary Care practice in 2015. She spoke about her journey transitioning to the direct primary care model and the benefits that it provides as an alternative model for the delivery of health care. \nApproximately 30 people were in attendance\, primarily first and second year Duke medical students with some representation from third and fourth year classes. We also had a representative from the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and two representatives from Benjamin Rush Institute. Dr. Walsh presented about 20 minutes of powerpoint slides and this was followed by a 20-30 minute question and answer session with the audience. \nThe event went very well. SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine—LECTURE: US Health Care Reform: What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:Scott W. Atlas\, MD\, is the David and Joan Traitel Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and a member of Hoover Institution’s Working Group on Health Care Policy. Dr. Atlas will be speaking to the SLU BRI chapter about his research and ideas about health care reform in the United States. All are welcome to attend. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty students attended. Dr. Scott Atlas started his presentation by addressing the common misconceptions about single-payer . He focused on dismantling the erroneous WHO report\, specifically the infant mortality and life-span data. \nHe also addressed the large failings of the US’s public insurers – medicare\, medicaid\, and the VA. After he made suggestions on would we could do to improve our current system. \nHe addressed audience questions during the last 20-30 minutes. There was lots of good questions and the audience was very engaged. \n  \n“Dr. Atlas’ talk was evidence-based that brought powerful arguments for free-market reform. I very much enjoyed the comparisons he made of various health care components in the US to those of other countries.” David W.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“Dr. Atlas has allowed us to continue the conversation on US healthcare and the free market’s role in its future.” Rohan P.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“It was refreshing having a view a anti-single-payer view presented on campus. I think most students passively accept the idea that government run healthcare is the natural\, best solution for the US. Dr. Atlas made it explicitly clear that single-payer has significant problems and we should be hesitant about adopting it in the US. His presentation was articulate and backed by research and data.” Tony Mazzaferro\, BRI-SLU chapter president\, M1 SLUSOM

Guy served as a Media Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution\, and a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. \n \nMary Katharine Ham is an American journalist and conservative commentator. She is editor at large of Hot Air\, a contributing editor to Townhall Magazine\, senior writer at The Federalist\, and a CNN contributor. At CPAC 2014\, she was presented with the ACU Blogger of the Year award. She was previously a Fox News contributor. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five SLU students attended this event. BRI-SLU president Tony Mazzaferro began with an introduction to BRI and its goals and mission\, then introduced the speakers. \nGuy Benson started off by talking about why he and Ms. Ham decided to write their book\, End of Discussion\, and what they hoped to accomplish with it. He touched on the hyperbolic rhetoric that entrenches American politics and how we need to avoid this. Guy spoke to the importance of free speech\, honest debate\, and the open exploration of ideas. Too often our demonization of opposing viewpoints hinders our ability to have productive conversation. Guy is a good speaker\, engaging\, and entertaining. The audience seemed to be enjoying his talk. \nHe and Mary Katharine took questions from the audience. People seemed very engaged and eager to ask questions. It was a good time! \nGuy and Mary Katharine were exactly like I hoped – they presented a case for conservative/free-market ideas but did so in a friendly\, agreeable manner. No on in the room\, whether liberal/conservative/libertarian\, etc. was offended by them. They were likable and entertaining. I personally had three faculty members at the med school thank me for organizing the event and felt the topic was important to discuss and that the med school needs more events like this. They loved it!” ~Tony Mazzaferro\, BRI-SLU chapter president and event organizer \n“The talk was very informative and eye-opening. The speakers were straight forward\, critical of both sides\, provided good examples that supported their ideas\, and kept the talk light-hearted by injecting great jokes.” – Kevin N.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“I really enjoyed the presentation organized by the Benjamin Rush Institute. Those leading the meeting were knowledgeable and could discuss the vital issues present in our current political and healthcare environment. I will be attending future BRI activities.” – Scott S.\, M1 SLUSOM \n“The BRI event was a great experience. The speakers were professional yet entertaining and I feel that I gained valuable\, practical knowledge about policy debates.” Alan P.\, M1 SLUSOM

SUMMARY:Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center—SPEAKER: Direct Primary Care @ Atlas MD\, with Dr. Josh Umbehr
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this FREE event featuring Dr. Josh Umbehr\, physician founder and owner of AtlasMD. Lunch will be provided to the first 80 people in attendance. \nThere is much to know about Direct Primary Care\, practiced now by hundreds of doctors across America. It is a way to spend more time with patients\, eliminate burdensome paperwork\, and also enjoy a great life as a doctor! Yet\, surprisingly\, few medical students (and even practicing physicians!) are aware of this promising way to establish a medical practice. \nCome find out about Direct Primary Care (DPC) with one of the pioneers in the movement\, Dr. Josh Umbehr\, who has two clinics in Kansas. Dr. Josh spends a lot of his time traveling & Skyping\, talking to medical students and patients about DPC when not spending quality one-on-one time with his patients. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Josh Umbehr Skyped in and spoke about his Atlas MD direct primary care practice and answered questions from first and second year medical students. This event was in partnership with the SOM P3 week\, which allows student groups to invite select speakers during the lunch hour. We had over 72 students RSVP and well over 100 attend (standing room only!). Many students were amazed by the opportunities that DPC has to offer. Lunch was provided for the first 80 students in attendance. \nWe had more students show up than expected. Dr. Josh is an great resource! I had multiple students indicate future interest in meetings and invited speakers.” ~Colten Philpott\, BRI-TTUHSC chapter president

SUMMARY:OSU\, Columbus—PANEL: Are the Tenets of Social Justice Compatible with the Ethical Requirements of the Patient-Doctor Relationship?
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us at this free panel discussion of the relationship between the tenets of social justice and their impact on the patient-doctor relationship. This event will be held on OSU’s campus in Meiling Hall #160\, is free to the public and greater student body. \nA light reception will be held from 5:30 – 6:00 pm outside the auditorium. Please RSVP at least 48 hours in advance to ensure enough food for all.\nREGISTER HERE. \nIs the cultural trend toward social justice beneficial or toxic to the patient-doctor relationship?\nA panel discussion is not a debate. The purpose of the evening is not to create winners and losers—but to deepen everyone’s understanding of today’s pressing healthcare issues. Too often in healthcare discussions\, terms are used without clarity\, or without really thinking through the possible downsides of what is being proposed. By investigating various view points we can best sort out the strength and weaknesses of various options\, and come to our own conclusions about what best serves the patient-doctor relationship. \nRepresenting that the tenets of social justice are compatible with the ethical requirements of the patient-doctor relationship: \nDaniel Skinner\, Ph.D.\, is Assistant Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Social Medicine at Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine\, in Dublin\, Ohio\, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, The Ohio State University (at Nationwide Children’s Hospital)\, and Assistant Director of the Health Policy Fellowship\, a certificate program of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. His areas of expertise include health care politics and policy; the politics of medicine and disease; hospital-community relations; and health care for vulnerable and underserved populations. \n \nDr. Francis Blais is an infectious disease specialist in Columbus\, Ohio. He received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and has been in practice for more than 20 years. \n  \n  \nRepresenting that the tenets of social justice are not compatible with the ethical requirements of the patient-doctor relationship: \nDr. Ryan Nash\, MD\, MA\, FACP\, FAAHPM\, is the Director of The Ohio State University Center for Bioethics and Director\, Division of Biomedical Education and Anatomy. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine and holds the Hagop Mekhjian\, MD\, Chair in Medical Ethics and Professionalism at the College of Medicine. In addition to practicing Palliative Medicine\, Dr. Nash is a Clinical Bioethics consultant and Healthcare Ethics Advisor for the OSU Medical Center. He has published one book\, three book chapters\, and several essays related to bioethics and has presented numerous scientific papers and invited lectures at national and international meetings. In addition\, Dr. Nash currently serves on the Ethics Committee for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. \n \nRobert R. Emmons\, MD is a Board Certified Psychiatrist / Neurologist – Clinical Neurophysiology practicing in Burlington\, VT. Dr. Emmons graduated Summa Cum Laude\, Luther College and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is affiliated with the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS)\, and founder and Staff Psychiatrist of the Franciscan Free Psychiatric Clinic in Vermont. \n  \nModerator: C. Alex Grieco is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Education and Anatomy and an Assistant Professor of Radiology within the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He works in the Office of Medical Education and Student Life\, and serves as Special Assistant to the Vice Dean of Education. SUMMARY:2018 BRI Student Leadership Conference\, Columbus\, OH
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS TO APPLY TO THE CONFERENCE IS OPEN! For application details\, click here. \nThis year’s theme: Ethics of the Patient-Doctor Relationship. At BRI’s 2018 Student Leadership Conference\, we will explore the ethics of the patient-doctor relationship and dig deeply into who is responsible for which aspects of this relationship\, and what is the proper and fitting role of government in this relationship. \nThis year’s conference offers two sessions open to the public!\nSession #1 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday\, 3/9 Luncheon Keynote: Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past | REGISTER\nSession #2 OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Friday evening Panel Discussion: Are the Tenets of Social Justice Compatible with the Ethical Requirements of the Patient – Doctor Relationship? | REGISTER \nThroughout the conference\, we will address today’s pressing questions:\nWhat are the ethical requirements related to patient confidentiality—and how do mandates like HIPAA and EHRs affect them?\nIs healthcare a right? (e.g. single-payer or Medicare for All)\nTo whom does a doctor owe loyalty? An employer or insurance contract\, government (“state”) rules\, or the patient?\nWhat happens when regulations\, government policy\, and other third parties insert their priorities into medical decision making?\nHow does the concept of “social justice” affect the patient-doctor relationship? \nThere are examples throughout history where blatant disregard for medical ethics and the patient-doctor relationship are obvious and egregious—The Third Reich and today’s Communist China are just two examples. But what about when interference in the patient-doctor relationship is more subtle? What about ‘rationing\,’ and ‘the greater good?’ \nWe have an exciting lineup of speakers for you\, including Drs. Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, Bob Emmons\, Raul Atal\, Sameer Lakha\, Twila Brase\, RN—and more! We are also doing something a little different this year—we’re opening up Friday’s luncheon Keynote session to the greater OSU student body\, as well as the standard Friday night panel discussion. \nIt’s going to be a GREAT conference. You won’t want to miss it. \nBRI STUDENT LEADERS! SUMMARY:Stony Brook School of Medicine—LECTURE: Innovations in Healthcare Delivery\, with Dr. Beth Haynes
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Healthcare Delivery: All are welcome to join us for a FREE lunch lecture with Dr. Beth Haynes\, medical director of Benjamin Rush Institute. \n  \nBeth Haynes\, MD BRI medical director\nThe need for affordable\, high quality medical care in the US is an ongoing discussion. There are some exciting models that are achieving these goals\, both in the US and internationally: cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty\, MD. What can we learn from these entrepreneurial models to help address the cost and access challenges our country faces? \nLunch guaranteed to those who RSVP 48-hours in advance. Registration Form. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The Health Policy Discussion Club at SUNY Stony Brook University School of Medicine hosted this event\, supported by Benjamin Rush Institute. Seventy-five students attended and were treated to lunch. \nDr. Haynes gave an interesting talk on “Innovations in Health Care Delivery” that discussed some exciting models which are achieving the goals of bringing affordable health care both in the US and internationally. These included cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, and from India\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty. \nThe event was greatly attended\, mainly by first year medical students. Food was served and the lecture was offered as an intellectual learning opportunity (ILO)\, which attendance to three is required to pass one of our first year classes. \nWith this event being the first event that the health policy discussion club has held under new leadership\, we believe that it was incredibly successful. The students were fully engaged with Dr. Haynes’ presentation and enjoyed the free lunch and the opportunity to obtain school credit for their attendance. Many of the students were exposed to the idea of free-market medical care for the first time and\, again\, found this event to be very useful\, especially since there are no real opportunities outside of the health policy discussion club to learn about many different approaches to solving the problems surrounding health care in the U.S.” ~Asha Liverpool\, Health Policy Discussion Club \n“That was a really interesting talk. I hadn’t been exposed to those ideas before. It’s interesting how many other options there are in medicine than the current system.” ~First year medical student\, Stony Brook School of Medicine \n“I really liked the talk. There is so much that I thought was just par for the course in medicine simply because that is the way I had seen it be done. It was interesting seeing the alternative direct care models and how that can provide less expensive care by cutting out the insurance companies. By getting rid of a lot of the overhead\, patients don’t have to pay for billing departments and insurance companies. It challenged me to consider ways to practice medicine that I had not been exposed to before.” ~First year medical student

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—JOURNAL CLUB: Rural Micropractice Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:The BRI-MCW chapter with the MCW Rural Medicine Interest Group hosted a teleconference lunch talk with Dr. James Kennedy on medical micropractice. There were 57 students in attendance. \nAttendees were sent an article giving an overview of a medical micropractice\, including topics such as an overall description\, how physicians in micropractice build intimate relationships with their patients\, and strategies that make a micropractice economically viable. During the event\, lunch was provided and Dr. James Kennedy remotely gave a presentation detailing his own micropractice in Winter Park\, CO. He discussed some of the barriers to beginning a micropractice\, some of the things that he enjoyed about his practice\, and also detailed logistical issues such as taking call and reimbursement. Dr. Kennedy also gave an update as to where his practice was currently\, commenting that it has grown from being completely solo\, to now having 2 other physicians. Attendees were then engaged in a Q&A session with Dr. Kennedy where they probed him about other questions and comments that they might have had. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty-seven students attended. For the event\, attendees were sent an article giving an overview of a medical micropractice\, including topics such as an overall description\, how physicians in micropractice build intimate relationships with their patients\, and strategies that make a micropractice economically viable. SUMMARY:OSUMC\, Columbus\, OH—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this FREE lunch lecture event\, Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness. The BRI-OSU chapter teamed up with the wellness council at OSU medical school to host a lunch talk with Dr. Heather Bartlett\, a local DPC physician\, owner and founder of The Bartlett Medical Clinic & Wellness Center. She will talk about how her practice works and how it enhances her patients’—and her own—overall wellness. We will be serving Jimmy Johns subs. The wellness council will be supplying the food and Coke will provide the drinks. \nThose who RSVP within 48 hours of the event will be guaranteed food. There is convenient parking at the 9th Ave garage across the street. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended the talk. Dr. Bartlett began by giving her story\, talking about all the problems in the current healthcare system that she encountered during her early years as a physician. She then talked about the process of starting her own DPC clinic\, and talked about all the ways that DPC can cut costs to provide enormous value to patients. She also talked about all the ways that her practice has saved her own personal wellness\, which is important in the face of so much physician burnout. \nMany students stayed 45 minutes after the talk was over to ask questions – there was tons of interest in DPC! One medical student even said that she planned to open a DPC practice in the future. A pre-med student there talked with Dr. Bartlett afterwards to organize a talk for a broader undergraduate audience as well. \nDr. Bartlett did a phenomenal job and was a lot of fun to listen to. I would recommend her to any other chapter looking to host a DPC physician and also for the 2018 Leadership Conference.” ~Morgan Kohls\, BRI-OSU chapter president

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—DINNER LECTURE: "Is Healthcare a Right?"
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for this dinner lecture as we continue the discussion of two different viewpoints surrounding the topic “Is Healthcare a Right?”—a crucial consideration in the argument for and against universal healthcare. \n \n  \nThis dinner talk with our very own Dr. Beth Haynes\, Medical Director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and will be entitled “Are rights relevant to healthcare? An inquiry.” Both talks will have plenty of time for Q&A as we hope to actively engage this topic. \nOur lunch talk (separate RSVP requested) will be held by Dr. Fabrice Jotterand\, a Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Bioethics\, and will be entitled “Keeping the Debate on a Moral Ground: Why Health Care is not a Right.” \nPlease RSVP for both or either event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty students and faculty attended this dinner talk. This was the second of two talks the BRI-MCW chapter hosted on the topic of “Is Healthcare a Right?” Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI medical director came to Wisconsin and\, after attending the lunch talk\, gave us an incredible\, conversation based dinner talk. She challenged preconceived notions about ethics and rights while posing questions from a “beginners mind.” This approach was able to challenge many students—as can be seen in the comments provided. \nI really enjoyed these events. Dr. Beth Haynes was both very engaging and open to conversation. I felt that she had a very strong opinion and appreciated her thought process. She has definitely given me more to think about when it comes to the Ethics of Healthcare.” ~Anonymous MCW Student \nI really appreciated the spirit of camaraderie that surrounded the event. Coming into Dr. Beth Haynes’s talk\, I was a strong believer in universal healthcare. After the event\, I feel like I do not know enough about philosophy or ethics to have complete confidence in my foundations. I am still a believer in universal healthcare\, but she gave me a lot to strongly consider. We need more talks like this on campus. Conversations around healthcare are nearly impossible to have these days\, especially given our current political environment. I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts\, arguing\, and hearing from others who differ from me.” – T. Taylor

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—LUNCH LECTURE: "Is Healthcare a Right?"
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for this lunch lecture—the first in a 2-part discussion both occurring on 1/17/18\, one at lunch\, and one at dinner. \nWe will consider two different viewpoints surrounding the topic “Is Healthcare a Right?”—a crucial consideration in the argument for and against universal healthcare. \n \n  \nOur lunch talk will be held by Dr. Fabrice Jotterand\, a Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Bioethics\, and will be entitled “Keeping the Debate on a Moral Ground: Why Health Care is not a Right.” \nWe will also be hosting a dinner talk (separate RSVP requested) with our very own Dr. Beth Haynes\, Medical Director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and will be entitled “Are rights relevant to healthcare? An inquiry.” Both talks will have plenty of time for Q&A as we hope to actively engage this topic. \nPlease RSVP for both or either event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty-six students and faculty attended this lecture. This was an exciting\, fun\, and informative day. Our BRI-MCW chapter put on two events on 1/17/18. Both revolved around the question: “Is healthcare a right?” This lunch talk with Dr. Jotterand\, a PhD bioethicist from Switzerland\, was the first of the two events. He argued that it is difficult to say that healthcare is a right\, but argued that on a moral ground we should determine that it is a social obligation for us to provide it to those around us. \nThis event went very smoothly\, it was incredible that Dr. Haynes came to the lunch talk and was able to converse with Dr. Jotterand. In return\, he came to her dinner talk and they were able to converse more.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, BRI-MCW officer

SUMMARY:OU-HCOM|Dublin—LECTURE: The Labyrinth Guide: a conversation with health care advocate Annette Ticoras\, MD
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for a lunch discussion on the role of the patient advocate in helping to navigate the healthcare system. Dr. Ticoras is an internal medicine physician who now practices patient advocacy full-time at Guided Patient Services. \nYouTube video \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Ticoras described her journey as an internal medicine physician and how she became a full time patient advocate. She went through the details of her responsibilities as a patient advocate. She also gave specific examples of how she has affected patient outcomes through her work.\nThis was a very casual round table event where Dr. Ticoras gave a presentation about half the time and we were able to ask her questions about her work the other half. This was a very rewarding talk and helped illustrate the importance of the doctor patient relationship.

SUMMARY:OSU College of Medicine—DEBATE: Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS)\, or Physician Aid in Dying
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this debate on Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). There will be short opening remarks by our presenters\, followed by the debate\, with 30 minutes at the end for audience questions. We are very excited to have some experts in this field participate in this debate\, including a physician who has participated in PAS. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: One hundred and sixty-five (165) people attended.  The debate began with catered desserts and beverages in the lobby from 6:30-7:00pm. This turned out to be the perfect amount of time to let people trickle in\, mingle with others\, get some food\, and take their seats.\nAt 7:00pm\, Morgan Kohls & Laura Sooy\, OSU-BRI co-presidents\, and Isabelle Berrisford (OSU Bioethics) introduced BRI\, the OSU Bioethics society\, and our moderator\, Dr. Stephanie Fabbro. Dr. Fabbro then gave a brief history of PAS/PAID in the US and provided some helpful definitions for the audience. She then introduced the debaters\, and allowed for pre-debate voting. Each debater was then given 3 minutes to make an opening statement. Next\, a series of 8 questions were asked. Each question was aimed towards a particular debater. That debater was given 2 minutes\, their teammate was given two minutes\, and then one member of the opposition was allowed a two minute rebuttal. After all questions were asked\, there was time for closing statements from each debater\, audience questions\, then post-debate voting. The side in opposition to PAS/PAID won the debate. \nThe event exceeded my expectations and other experiences. Each debater was knowledgeable and persuasive in different ways. The turnout was great and the audience seemed engaged the entire time. The only thing I would change is that we went a little overtime with main questions\, which only allowed for four audience questions. The debaters also took a great deal of time back and forth on the audience questions. In the future\, I would try to put a little more structure in audience questions (directed towards only one or two individuals\, rather than open)\, and would save a couple less important main questions for last so that they could be cut if necessary.” ~Morgan Kohls\, OSU-BRI co-president \n“Thank you for organizing this; I’m glad I came!” ~student attendee \nMODERATOR:\nDr. Stephanie Fabbro\, M.D.\, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center \n  \n  \n  \nIn support:\nDr. Timothy E. SUMMARY:Sidney Kimmel Medical College—PANEL: Rating doctor and hospital quality: Who is the best judge?
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome & encouraged to attend this five person expert panel event. \nAs medical payment systems grapple with how to pay for “value not volume\,” it’s natural (and essential) to ask: How do we determine value? How do we judge quality? Because this is a multi-faceted topic\, we have gathered a panel which will speak from multiple points of view. Our goal is for everyone to leave the event with a deeper\, more nuanced understanding of the issues and challenges\, and hopefully with some new ideas about how to create meaningful solutions. \nPlease RSVP using the tinyURL at the bottom of this event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPANELISTS:\n \nAnish Koka\, MD – cardiologist. The High Cost of Public Reporting (public reporting leads to net harm).\nAnish Koka is a cardiologist in Philadelphia. SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine—LECTURE: Build the medical practice of your dreams!
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture on building the medical practice of your dreams\, starting with a great foundation! Literally\, your building! \nJoin BRI-SLU and Mark Morrison to learn how to take the fears out of starting your the medical practice you envision. Please RSVP to ensure enough refreshments for all! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-eight students attended to hear Mr. Mark Morrison and Mr. Chris Howard give an overview of the financial literacy and considerations needed in order to start your own practice. Topics that came up in this talk included advice on what common loans we would be given as a start-up practice\, as well as finding a necessary real estate professional to vouch for us as a practicing physician. \nThis talk provided a great introduction to the skills\, staff\, and finances needed to start your own practice. Healthcare professionals could benefit from learning about real estate representation and loan negotiations prior to engaging in medical financing solutions\, especially for those interested in developing their own private practice.” ~June Tong\, SLU-BRI chapter co-president \n \n“Provided a very good\, albeit rushed overview of the financial considerations needed for a private practice. I think it would have been beneficial to have expanded the event\, because there was a surprisingly larger representation of 3rd year medical students in the audience. In addition\, we received emails regarding recording the presentation\, which we couldn’t do due to technical limitations within the room. The speakers were very knowledgeable and I would greatly recommend them as a source of knowledge for those interested in starting their own practice.” Event attendee\, SLU
