SUMMARY:National BRI Student Leadership Conference
DESCRIPTION:Current & Future\nBRI Student Chapter Leaders\nYou care about the future of medicine — you ARE the future of medicine! \n \nWant to …\n  — learn how to make your BRI Chapter an effective\, vital part of your school’s educational program?\n  — know how to start and maintain a vibrant BRI Chapter that hosts exceptional\, noteworthy debates\, lectures\, lunch presentations\, and talks?\n  — be part of the answer to establishing American healthcare that really works… for everyone?\n \nYou will…\n  — meet like-minded student leaders from medical schools across the country\n  — exchange ideas\, support and experience to help each other succeed in all areas\n \nIf we are going to reach the hearts and minds of young physicians\, YOU are the ones who will make it happen; without you\, the values and ideas we share will NOT be heard in medical schools.\n  \n\nBased on feedback from last year’s Conference\, we will spend much more time on networking\, exchanging ideas\, and working in smaller\, focused breakout groups on projects directly affecting how you want BRI to work for you on your campus. Yes\, you will get “nuts & bolts\,” but there is a lot more of your creativity and inspiration that will fuel the future of BRI. We want you to be there to share your ideas with us! \nSPECIAL BONUS: Saturday Night Debate & Dinner! \nHost BRI Chapter at Anschutz Medical Campus | U.Colorado\, is organizing a debate for Saturday\, March 01 on ObamaCare’s controversial Medicare cost control panel\, the IPAB (Independent Payment Advisory Board). A dinner with fellow attendees and debaters will follow. The Debate & Dinner were one of last year’s Conference highlights. \nBRI has modeled itself on organizations with similar goals of defending liberty: Federalist Society\, Alexander Hamilton Society\, etc. These organizations have found that their successful Chapters have leaders who attend the annual meeting. We can not stress enough the correlation between a successful\, fun\, vibrant BRI Student Chapter and attendance at this 2014 kickoff meeting. \n\n\nYou are the most important part of the Conference! Now is the time to make your travel arrangements. We will send you complete hotel information in the next week or so.\n\n\nARRIVAL: Please plan to arrive at Denver International Airport (DEN) in time to attend our Friday\, Feb28 evening reception from 7pm – 9pm. This will be a complimentary bar with hearty hors d’oeuvres\, and a chance to mix\, mingle & get to know your fellow attendees.\n\n\nDEPARTURE: Plan your return flight for AFTER 2pm on Sunday\, Mar02. The Conference will end at noon on Sunday.\n\n\nBRI is prepared to pay for two Student Leaders per campus — more if we are able to keep our costs down.  If you are interested\, CONTACT US SOON!\n\n\nEvent is free to BRI Chapter Leaders. Thank you so much for your partnership! We look forward to seeing you in Denver!

SUMMARY:Yale—DEBATE: "How Should Doctors Be Paid? The Future of Physician Compensation and the Role of Government."
DESCRIPTION:Part of the healthcare reform debate is on how to improve care by modifying physician compensation. What method will best lead to quality improvement and cost reduction? Is it by replacing fee-for-service with ACOs\, or bundled payments? Should all physicians be salaried\, whether in government single-payer system or private businesses? Is fee-for-service the real culprit for rising costs by driving “volume not value?” Will other methods be superior? What are the best ways to discover better payment models? Is it  government-driven policy changes\, or do we need to let market competition drive innovations in delivery and compensation? \nCome hear what four policy experts have to say on this very important part of solving the challenges we face in providing quality\, affordable medical care. \nModerator: Howard P. Forman\, MD\, MBA\, Professor of Diagnostic Radiology\, Public Health (Health Policy)\, Management\, and Economics at Yale University. \nPanelists: \nZack Cooper\, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Public Health (Health Policy) and of Economics at Yale University\, and will represent the position that public policy must drive payment innovation in healthcare. \nJohn R. Graham is a Senior Fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis and will represent the position that fee-for-service would work well in healthcare if not tied to the 3rd party payer system. \nNeil B. Minkoff\, MD is a former Commissioner of the Massachusetts Group Insurance Commission and will represent the position that innovative payment models should be developed by the free market. \nRobert Nordgren\, MD\, MBA\, MPH\, is the CEO of Northeast Medical Group and a Senior Vice President of Yale New Haven Health System\, and will represent the position that salaried models work well in healthcare. \nBrought to you by the YSM Healthcare Improvement Group/IHI Open School Chapter\, and sponsored by the Benjamin Rush Institute\, Arthur N. Rupe Foundation\, Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate\, Yale Healthcare Life Sciences Club\, and Yale Healthcare Collective.
