SUMMARY:Mises Institute’s Libertarian Scholars Conference
DESCRIPTION:BRI is offering medical students to apply HERE for one of five scholarships by September 27\, 2018. \nThe Libertarian Scholars Conference was originally conceived as a forum for scholars from different disciplines to meet and exchange ideas on the study of liberty. The ultimate goal was to integrate their diverse insights and approaches into a broad interdisciplinary perspective on liberty\, what Murray Rothbard called “the discipline of liberty.” The founders of the conference hoped that this discipline or systematic body of knowledge would give shape and direction to the growing ideological movement of modern libertarianism\, much as British classical and French liberal political economy had guided the movement of classical (laissez-faire) liberalism. This series of conferences succeeded admirably in stimulating scholarly research from a libertarian perspective and attracting many new scholars\, young and old\, to the scientific study of liberty. \nThe libertarian movement has grown tremendously since the early 1980s and so has the need for intellectual guidance from experts in the social sciences and humanities\, whose several disciplines help elucidate the nature of human liberty and its importance in nurturing and sustaining the social order that permits human civilization to flourish. \nWith this in mind\, the Mises Institute\, as heir to the Center for Libertarian Studies\, is reviving the Libertarian Scholars Conference\, which will take place on Saturday\, October 20\, 2018\, in New York City\, the site of the first conference.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr will speak about his experience starting his own Direct Pay Primary Care practice and how he sees this model as a possible solution to healthcare reform. Penn State faculty are underwriting refreshments for this event. \nAffectionately known as “Dr. Josh” by medical students who know him\, Dr. Umbehr has been a frequent speaker at BRI events\, and at a past leadership conference. He was also featured on BRI’s Next Generation Medicine podcast Episode #3.\nYou can learn more about Dr. Josh and AtlasMD on the AtlasMD website. \nI was born and raised in Alma\, Kansas where I met my high school sweetheart\, Lisa\, while playing football at Manhattan High School and followed her to Kansas State University. While there\, I majored in human nutritional sciences with a minor in biology. I also did extensive research on the effects of vitamin A on lung cancer. I then graduated from The University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed my family medicine residency at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. After completing training and becoming a board certified Family Physician\, I opened Atlas MD\, a practice that I had been dreaming about for nearly a decade. Atlas MD represents my ideal medical practice where I’m able to shrug off the burdens and restrictions of government and insurance regulation so I can focus solely on my patients and their needs.” ~Dr. Josh Umbehr\, from the AtlasMD website \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Forty-five students and faculty attended this event. Dr. Josh Umbehr hosted a question and answer discussion around Direct Primary Care. DESCRIPTION:Beth Haynes\, MD\, BRI’s medical director will participate on a 2-person panel discussion with Dr. Jeannine Marie Rodems on Direct Primary Care. \nThis event will begin with introductions at 7pm. \n7:05 – 7:20 Theoretical (Economics/Legislative) aspects of DPC from Dr. Haynes\n7:20 – 7:35 Practical aspects of DPC from Dr. Rodems (specifically opening and maintaining Santa Cruz DPC)\n7:35 – 7:55 15-20 Q&A with prepared questions\n7:55 – 9:00 pm Open questions from the audience \nThis event is free and parking is available at Parking Lot 107. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five students attended. Dr. Haynes presented on the concept of direct pay as opposed to third-party payer models. She discussed entities like the Surgery Center of OK\, Oregon Coast Dermatology\, Nayarana Health and Aravind Eye Care in India. Dr. Rodems talked about her DPC model and the DPC movement\, explaining how she is able to provide better care at more affordable cost. The event organizer then asked several questions formulated from anti-DPC articles she had read. These were the really fun questions as they were easily dispelled by explaining the inaccurate understanding many DPC detractors have\, and their failure to acknowledge just how broken our current primary care is. \nScheduled to last from 7:30 to 9pm\, no one even noticed the time until almost 10pm when we needed to be out of the room. The audience consisted primarily of YAL and College Republicans interested in healthcare\, but a couple of pre-med students also attended\, excited for the opportunity to learn more about positive solutions that did not involve more government. \n

Her poster\, Clichés\, Memes\, and Euphemisms in Healthcare was accepted for exhibit in a main hall and was designed to promote and foster open dialogue and communication about healthcare. \nThe poster’s purpose:\n“Far too often we use words without clarity. Or\, we assume our meaning is the same as other’s. At other times\, we use words to signal rather than to deepen understanding or participate in shared inquiry. In politics especially\, this is frequently the case. And yet\, our best chance at inventing solutions which heal rather than divide is through authentic communication. As a first step in up-grading our conversations\, please help me identify explore the clichés\, memes and euphemisms in our current debate over healthcare\, and maybe even create 5th field conversations in the world of Adult as Possibility.” ~Dr. Beth Haynes \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 750 people attended The Conference for Global Transformation\, an international event with the purpose of exploring ways people can work together to improve themselves and the state of the world. \nFrom Dr. Beth Haynes: \nMy poster invited participants to examine the way in which we use language as we engage in the healthcare debate. \nWhich words invite and which shut down meaningful discourse? Which words are used without clear or mutually agreed upon definitions? What can we do/say to improve understanding and communication\, rather than continuing to talk past one another? \nOver the course of two hours\, I was able stimulate dialogue on how we can upgrade our healthcare policy conversations—both as individuals and as a nation. Conference attendees’ political leaning is generally quite liberal\, so this was a fabulous opportunity to make the case for the importance of including alternative perspectives in deliberations about the future of healthcare in the US and throughout the world. \nI was able to connect with several physicians\, all of whom are active at their local level\, and are either searching for or working to create better solutions. \nI also connected with the founder of Civic Series\, a non-profit aimed at educating young adults about important issues facing the world. Thus far the series has reached out to and engaged millennials primarily from a liberal perspective\, but the founder is genuinely interested in engaging individuals from a broad range of perspectives. In addition to offering to assist her with identifying conservative/libertarian speakers\, I will be connecting her with America’s Future Foundation so the two organizations can look at how they can collaborate. \nOverall\, the poster was well received and generated thoughtful conversations about how to best approach the challenge of improving healthcare policy.”

Dr. Atlas will be speaking to the SLU BRI chapter about his research and ideas about health care reform in the United States. All are welcome to attend. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty students attended. Dr. Scott Atlas started his presentation by addressing the common misconceptions about single-payer . He focused on dismantling the erroneous WHO report\, specifically the infant mortality and life-span data. \nHe also addressed the large failings of the US’s public insurers – medicare\, medicaid\, and the VA. After he made suggestions on would we could do to improve our current system. \nHe addressed audience questions during the last 20-30 minutes. There was lots of good questions and the audience was very engaged. \n  \n“Dr. Atlas’ talk was evidence-based that brought powerful arguments for free-market reform. BRI-SLU president Tony Mazzaferro began with an introduction to BRI and its goals and mission\, then introduced the speakers. \nGuy Benson started off by talking about why he and Ms. Ham decided to write their book\, End of Discussion\, and what they hoped to accomplish with it. He touched on the hyperbolic rhetoric that entrenches American politics and how we need to avoid this. Guy spoke to the importance of free speech\, honest debate\, and the open exploration of ideas. Too often our demonization of opposing viewpoints hinders our ability to have productive conversation. Guy is a good speaker\, engaging\, and entertaining. The audience seemed to be enjoying his talk. \nHe and Mary Katharine took questions from the audience. People seemed very engaged and eager to ask questions. It was a good time! \nGuy and Mary Katharine were exactly like I hoped – they presented a case for conservative/free-market ideas but did so in a friendly\, agreeable manner. No on in the room\, whether liberal/conservative/libertarian\, etc. was offended by them. They were likable and entertaining. I personally had three faculty members at the med school thank me for organizing the event and felt the topic was important to discuss and that the med school needs more events like this. This event was in partnership with the SOM P3 week\, which allows student groups to invite select speakers during the lunch hour. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us at this free panel discussion of the relationship between the tenets of social justice and their impact on the patient-doctor relationship. This event will be held on OSU’s campus in Meiling Hall #160\, is free to the public and greater student body. \nA light reception will be held from 5:30 – 6:00 pm outside the auditorium. Please RSVP at least 48 hours in advance to ensure enough food for all.\nREGISTER HERE. \nIs the cultural trend toward social justice beneficial or toxic to the patient-doctor relationship?\nA panel discussion is not a debate. The purpose of the evening is not to create winners and losers—but to deepen everyone’s understanding of today’s pressing healthcare issues. Too often in healthcare discussions\, terms are used without clarity\, or without really thinking through the possible downsides of what is being proposed. By investigating various view points we can best sort out the strength and weaknesses of various options\, and come to our own conclusions about what best serves the patient-doctor relationship. \nRepresenting that the tenets of social justice are compatible with the ethical requirements of the patient-doctor relationship: \nDaniel Skinner\, Ph.D.\, is Assistant Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Social Medicine at Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine\, in Dublin\, Ohio\, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics\, The Ohio State University (at Nationwide Children’s Hospital)\, and Assistant Director of the Health Policy Fellowship\, a certificate program of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. His areas of expertise include health care politics and policy; the politics of medicine and disease; hospital-community relations; and health care for vulnerable and underserved populations. \n \nDr. Francis Blais is an infectious disease specialist in Columbus\, Ohio. He has published one book\, three book chapters\, and several essays related to bioethics and has presented numerous scientific papers and invited lectures at national and international meetings. In addition\, Dr. Nash currently serves on the Ethics Committee for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. \n \nRobert R. DESCRIPTION:Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past\nFor the first time\, Benjamin Rush Institute is opening its Friday Keynote Luncheon address with Dr. Raul Artal to the greater OSU\, OUHCOM\, other local universities\, and the greater Columbus community. Raul Artal\, MD\, FACOG\, FACSM will be our luncheon Keynote Speaker on the topic Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past. \nFriday’s luncheon event is part of BRI’s annual student Leadership Conference and is typically a private event for attending students only. This year’s conference theme is Ethics of the Patient-Doctor Relationship\, and we find the questions and dialogue that are part of this discussion to be so vital to influencing positive healthcare policy\, that we are opening this up to reach more people. \n\nDr. Artal\, a Holocaust survivor\, was born in a Nazi concentration camp. He is the Chairman and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics\, Gynecology and Women’s Health at Saint Louis University. There are some exciting models that are achieving these goals\, both in the US and internationally: cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty\, MD. What can we learn from these entrepreneurial models to help address the cost and access challenges our country faces? \nLunch guaranteed to those who RSVP 48-hours in advance. Registration Form. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The Health Policy Discussion Club at SUNY Stony Brook University School of Medicine hosted this event\, supported by Benjamin Rush Institute. Seventy-five students attended and were treated to lunch. \nDr. Haynes gave an interesting talk on “Innovations in Health Care Delivery” that discussed some exciting models which are achieving the goals of bringing affordable health care both in the US and internationally. These included cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, and from India\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty. \nThe event was greatly attended\, mainly by first year medical students. Food was served and the lecture was offered as an intellectual learning opportunity (ILO)\, which attendance to three is required to pass one of our first year classes. \nWith this event being the first event that the health policy discussion club has held under new leadership\, we believe that it was incredibly successful. The students were fully engaged with Dr. Haynes’ presentation and enjoyed the free lunch and the opportunity to obtain school credit for their attendance. Many of the students were exposed to the idea of free-market medical care for the first time and\, again\, found this event to be very useful\, especially since there are no real opportunities outside of the health policy discussion club to learn about many different approaches to solving the problems surrounding health care in the U.S.” ~Asha Liverpool\, Health Policy Discussion Club \n“That was a really interesting talk. I hadn’t been exposed to those ideas before. It’s interesting how many other options there are in medicine than the current system.” ~First year medical student\, Stony Brook School of Medicine \n“I really liked the talk. There is so much that I thought was just par for the course in medicine simply because that is the way I had seen it be done. It was interesting seeing the alternative direct care models and how that can provide less expensive care by cutting out the insurance companies. By getting rid of a lot of the overhead\, patients don’t have to pay for billing departments and insurance companies. It challenged me to consider ways to practice medicine that I had not been exposed to before.” ~First year medical student

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin—JOURNAL CLUB: Rural Micropractice Interest Group
DESCRIPTION:The BRI-MCW chapter with the MCW Rural Medicine Interest Group hosted a teleconference lunch talk with Dr. James Kennedy on medical micropractice. There were 57 students in attendance. \nAttendees were sent an article giving an overview of a medical micropractice\, including topics such as an overall description\, how physicians in micropractice build intimate relationships with their patients\, and strategies that make a micropractice economically viable. During the event\, lunch was provided and Dr. James Kennedy remotely gave a presentation detailing his own micropractice in Winter Park\, CO. He discussed some of the barriers to beginning a micropractice\, some of the things that he enjoyed about his practice\, and also detailed logistical issues such as taking call and reimbursement. Dr. Kennedy also gave an update as to where his practice was currently\, commenting that it has grown from being completely solo\, to now having 2 other physicians.
