SUMMARY:Dartmouth — FILM NIGHT: Screening and discussion of obesity epidemic documentary "Fed Up"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for free refreshments and a screening of the obesity documentary “Fed Up.” Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and journalist Katie Couric examine America’s obesity epidemic and question the role of both the industry and government regulators in contributing to sickness. This BRI event is part of Dartmouth’s Public Health week celebration. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: In conjunction with the week-long series of events put on by the student-led committee that promotes National Public Health Awareness week on campus\, our BRI-Dartmouth chapter held a screening of the film “Fed Up” for 16 students.”Fed Up” is a recent documentary about the obesity epidemic. It is a very good film that discusses how the food industry has captured the regulatory power and influence of the government. it does not come across as “free market propaganda” to the average viewer\, but there is an unmistakable message that government involvement in these matters can make things worse.

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine — LECTURE: Dr. Timothy Law "Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play" or Medical Fee for Service
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Law Lecture: “Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play\,” or Medical Fee for Service\n\nDr. Timothy Law will be talking about his practice as a rural medical practitioner. He will be discussing his work with the Amish community and how he has formed a very successful rural practice built on a medical fee for service model. Dr. Law is a Assistant Professor and Medical Director for CTRU\, & SHAPe as well as a Associate Director of Rural and Urban Scholars Pathway.\n\n \nPOST-DEBATE SUMMARY: Forty students attended this event\, with 25 signing up for more information about BRI. Dr. Law discussed the benefits of directing his own practice\, especially one that is rural and that deals with the Amish population. He talked about the costs and fees associated with owning your own practice and ways to maximize patient care while also making a decent living. It was really interesting to learn about how he interacts with his patients and some of the payment forms that he has received\, which is a benefit to his more informal rural practice. He has also been able to get many of our medical students involved in this experience\, giving them hands-on clinical and treatment experience. Dr. Law is a great mentor for our school\, and we always enjoy having him speak to learn the different ways we can provide excellent patient care\, while still making a great living.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — MOVIE SCREENING: Poverty\, Inc.: "The Business of Doing Good"
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: The “Business of Doing Good.”\nThe Marian University School of Medicine’s BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. \n  \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Eighteen students attended this free refreshments and film screening. After the movie it was opened up for discussion. People were really questioning the purpose of NGO’s and things we can do individually to make sure things like this do not happen. Empowering the citizens of the poor countries is key to getting them our of poverty\, as opposed to just giving them free things all the time. In the end\, the documentary raised more questions than answered. But the documentary made many people aware of what is going on\, and now the message can be spread through word of mouth from what was viewed in the documentary. \n“The screening went great. Timmy Global Health made it a mandatory screening for any club members that planned on traveling to the Dominican Republic for their medical mission trip this summer. While I don’t necessarily agree with making things mandatory\, it helped based on the number of people that attended.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian president \nThe attendance for this documentary screening was better than the documentary screening Wait Till It’s Free last year. I think it opened up the eyes of some people that were unaware to this\, and hopefully it allows them to see things through a new perspective when they go to the Dominican Republic or other foreign country when they do mission work. \n

SUMMARY:Georgetown University — PANEL DISCUSSION: How to preserve your conscience while practicing medicine
DESCRIPTION:How to preserve your conscience while practicing medicine\nPlease join us for refreshments and a free lecture with two outstanding people in their fields. Dr. Paul Kempen and Matt Bowman\, Esq. will be speaking to medical students about how they can strive to maintain their conscience once they are practicing physicians. During the course of a medical career it is inevitable that a physician will be put in a position that may violate their conscience. Understanding how to handle such a situation and understanding how to practice medicine such that you do not violate your conscience is vital for future physicians. \nMatthew S. Bowman\, Esq.\, serves as senior counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom\, where he is a key member of the Center for Life. Bowman has focused his legal efforts on promoting a culture of life\, leading the fight against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate that forces employers to provide employees with healthcare coverage that includes early abortion items and birth control in violation of their religious convictions. \n  \n  \nDr. Paul Kempen attended medical school in Freiburg\, Germany in the 1980’s and is a practicing Anesthesiologist in Cleveland\, OH. He currently practices at The Cleveland Clinic and is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kempen is board certified in Anesthesiology and also practices at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus Anesthesiology in Lorain\, OH. \n  \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: BRI-Georgetown and the Catholic Medical Association sponsored this presentation for 25 interested medical students\, faculty and staff. Dr. Kempen spoke on medical ethics providing examples of what he and other doctors have encountered in the realm of ethical concerns while practicing medicine. He made sure to explain that it is always wise to choose your ethical battles carefully\, and that ethical consults are always available\, even to medical students. On the other hand\, Matt Bowman spoke on medical ethics with a thesis of “doctor autonomy enables patient choice.” Mr. Bowman reasoned that forcing all doctors to practice medicine as the government or medical elite see fit reduces patient choices. For example\, some patients who may be pro-life may have a desire only to receive care from doctors who are also pro-life. \n \n“Both speakers were excellent.” ~Second year medical student\n“Mr. Bowman had a very well reasoned and logical presentation.” ~Second year medical student

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — LECTURE: Dr. Richard Gunderman "The American Physician Who Made the Biggest Difference"
DESCRIPTION:The American Physician Who Made the Biggest Difference\nDo you think you know a physician who “made the biggest difference?” Want to know who this is? All are welcome to hear a lecture presentation by the esteemed Richard Gunderman\, MD\, PhD from Indiana University. BRI-Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine is sponsoring this event. RSVPs are appreciated to ensure sufficient refreshments for all. \nLast year\, Dr. Gunderson enthralled us with a lecture on “How Freedom Enriches Medicine and Life.” He is an engaging and enlightening speaker\, and the evening promises to be inspiring! \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seventeen students enjoyed lunch and another edifying and entertaining lecture by Dr. Gunderman. The subject of Dr. Gunderman’s talk was none other than Dr. Benjamin Rush himself! We learned about Rush’s life\, interests\, ideology\, and accomplishments. It was a great talk about the man who is the symbol of BRI. \n \nBenjamin Rush graduated from what is now Princeton by age 14. He became the first chemistry professor in the colonies and is known as the father of psychiatry\, because he wrote the first book on mental illness. He also opened the first free clinic in the US. He was one of five Founders who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Dr. Rush was the inspiration behind Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. He trained Louis and Clark in some medical knowledge to prepare them for their expedition. Dr. Rush was friends with Thomas Jefferson\, John Adams\, and Benjamin Franklin. \n \nThese were just some of the things on Benjamin Rush’s long list of accolades. But in a more ideological lens\, he was a strong lover of liberty. He believed in letting people develop to their full potential without government interference. He was a huge advocate for his patients. He had radical views for his time: he was against the death penalty\, against racism\, and advocated education for women and African Americans. He was also deeply religious\, helping found the African Methodist Episcopal Church. \n“Dr. Gunderman is a great speaker and he is able to keep the audience entertained. He seems to be very interested in the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and the overall goal of informing students on topics not normally covered in medical school curriculums.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian president \nBenjamin Rush’s legacy is grounded in medicine\, politics\, religion\, and activism. He had a passion for everything he did\, and made the best of the time while he was alive. Dr. Gunderman finished his talk by saying we as doctors should be taking a more active role in our communities\, like Benjamin Rush. \nThere were four MS1’s in attendance today\, and I already heard back from one of them saying she was interested in becoming more involved with BRI. Over the past few weeks with Patch Adams\, Poverty Inc.\, and now Dr. Gunderman more MS1’s seem to have BRI on their radar. We had more attendees this year for Dr. Gunderman as opposed to last year.

SUMMARY:Ohio State University College of Medicine — DEBATE: Federal Government Healthcare Programs vs. Free Markets
DESCRIPTION:  \nGovernment healthcare\, or free markets?\n  \nBe it RESOLVED: The Federal Government Can Provide More Compassionate and Efficient Healthcare for All Americans than the Free Market.\nDo you think you know enough about government-run healthcare? Free market healthcare? Ohio State University College of Medicine BRI chapter and Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP) cordially invite you to attend our debate wherein free markets will be pitched head on against federal government\, single payer healthcare programs. Which system provides the best solutions for the most people at the best prices? Which takes better care of the doctor-patient relationship? Which is more efficient? \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Benjamin Rush Institute\, in collaboration with Student for a National Health Program\, held a debate before 120 people at The Ohio State University College of Medicine\, with five physicians gathered to debate government and free market healthcare. The topic was intentionally broad in order to maximize the perspectives that students and faculty in attendance were exposed to. \nModerated by Dr. Ryan Nash\, Director of The Ohio State University Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities\, the debaters argued both sides of the following resolution “The Government Can Provide More Compassionate and Efficient Healthcare for All Americans than the Free Market.” \nDr. Brad Cotton\, Columbus-area emergency medicine physician\, and Dr. Donald Mack\, an assistant professor of clinical family medicine at Ohio State\, argued in favor of the resolution\, referencing their combined experience working with the underserved and the shortcomings of the current healthcare system. Arguing against the resolution were Dr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and Dr. Harry Jha\, an interventional radiologist at Penn with a knack for health economics. They championed against a potential one-size-fits-all health care model and suggested that our current health care crisis is an issue of poverty rather than “insurance” coverage. \nThe debate was vigorous and yet civil\, and ended with heavy audience participation. Attendees voted on the resolution both before and after listening to the debate. \nOSU medical students continue to express their gratitude to BRI organizers for bringing this important controversy to their attention\, and presenting it in a format that promotes balanced civil discourse. \n  \nPlease RSVP using the green REGISTER button above\, or here: OSU Healthcare Debate so that we can ensure enough refreshments for all. We look forward to you joining us for what is sure to be a lively\, enlightening evening of professional\, informed debate! \n5:00pm  Refreshments\, reception\, registration and pre-debate voting\n5:25pm  Welcome & Introduction\n5:30pm  Debate begins\n6:25pm  Moderator Q&A\n6:45pm  Audience Q&A\n7:00pm  Debate ends. Post-debate voting and tally.\n7:05pm  Announcement of results \nIn spite of ACA’s passage in 2009\, the debate over the general direction of much needed health reforms continues\, with some arguing that the law takes us in the wrong direction and others arguing that the law has not given the government enough control. Three debaters will uphold the resolution\, and two debaters will argue in opposition. \nARGUING THE AFFIRMATIVE: \nDr. Bradford W. Cotton Brad W. Cotton is a full-time emergency physician in the Columbus metro area. SUMMARY:Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science — MOVIE SCREENING: Code Black
DESCRIPTION:Code Black Movie Screening\nWe will be showing the movie Code Black to students at Rosalind Franklin to help them gain a better understanding of the healthcare environment and how our current health policies affect doctors on a daily basis. \nJoin us for snacks and appetizers following the film! \n \nFrom the film’s website:\nIn his vivid and thought-provoking filmmaking debut\, physician Ryan McGarry gives us unprecedented access to America’s busiest Emergency Department. Amidst real life-and-death situations\, McGarry follows a dedicated team of charismatic\, young doctors-in-training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened system. Their training ground and source of inspiration is “C-Booth\,” Los Angeles County Hospital’s legendary trauma bay\, the birthplace of Emergency Medicine\, where “more people have died and more people have been saved than in any other square footage in the United States.” CODE BLACK offers a tense\, doctor’s-eye view\, right into the heart of the healthcare debate – bringing us face to face with America’s only 24/7 safety net. \nBest Documentary winner at Los Angeles Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival\, as well as the Audience Award Winner at both Denver Starz Film Festival and Aspen FilmFest.

SUMMARY:University of Delaware — MOVIE SCREENING: Poverty\, Inc.: "The Business of Doing Good"
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: “The Business of Doing Good.”\nThe University of Delaware BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seven students attended the screening. \nFrom University of Delaware BRI chapter president\, Zachary Howell: \n \n“The week before the screening\, the event planners (BRI chapter VP\, Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) president and VP\, and I) had a pre-watch event so that we could talk about the movie effectively at the tabling event we planned to hold prior to the event to garner interest and be able to speak to the detrimental effects of foreign aid. \n“During the day on May 9th\, BRI and YAL held this tabling event. The tabling was very effective in opening people’s eyes to how foreign aid affects the communities of third-world countries. It seemed to be less of a problem of disagreement\, but more so one of never considering that there were adverse effects of current measures of fighting poverty. The head of academic enrichment at the school seemed to really like our table and spent about ten minutes discussing foreign aid and going through the books we had on display (Lessons from the Poor\, by Alvaro Vargas Llosa; Dead Aid\, by Dambisa Moyo; The Bottom Billion\, by Paul Collier; and\, The White Man’s Burden\, by William Easterly). The event was worthwhile in getting people to consider that there was another viewpoint; unfortunately\, many could not attend the viewing because they had to study for tests. \n“That night we played the movie in a classroom at the school. I began the event with a few questions to think about that I took from the supplementary materials. These included “What is poverty?”\, “What is charity?”\, “What is something you can do to help the poor and what is the likelihood that you will actually do it?” and a few others. Those who came really liked the movie and seemed to be very engaged with it while it was playing. After the video\, everyone stayed for a post-movie discussion. I had prepared a few things to say for after the move to wrap up the pre-movie questions and a few things that I thought were important to know when they left. I talked about how reducing charity to writing a check really cheapens what charity can actually be for people. I also told how the movie changed my future plans. I had always thought I wanted to help with delivering health care to Latin America since part of my family is from Venezuela and Mexico\, but this movie taught me that the best way to rectify the situation is to work to teach the actual medical professionals in the various communities\, rather than a one-time “Doctors Without Borders” style treat-and-leave program. I also told how the purpose of this movie is not to change your desire to help the poor\, but rather to fine-tune our perception of poverty and the capabilities of those who find themselves in poverty. \n“After\, there were some questions from those who attended and I was very satisfied by the questions they asked because they showed a great deal of personal reflection and interaction with the content of the video.” \n

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn't—Getting Medical Costs Under Control
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivers a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn’t—Getting Medical Costs Under Control. \nThere is much talk about how to control medical costs. Medical inflation continues to outpace general inflation. Why this is happening has much to do with the fact that what is called “health insurance” really isn’t insurance. We argue that coerced wealth distribution is immoral\, but this argument does not resonate with everyone. Being abel to also argue the economic aspects of healthcare can strengthen your ability to make the case for freedom in medical care. Come learn about the nature of insurance\, what it is and isn’t\, why current health policy is doomed to fail\, and what better alternatives exist.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivered a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians. \nIt is important that we undertake the task of engaging our future physicians. What are they learning about health policy? Given the state of higher education today\, it’s no surprise that health policy instruction at medical schools is government-centric. But what is surprising is how little formal policy instruction students receive\, which presents a great opportunity to interject the voice of reason into the conversation. Benjamin Rush Institute is doing exactly that. In just the fall semester of 2016\, we reached 1300 medical student5s. Come hear how we are presenting the ideas of individual rights and limited government in a way that even liberal medical students are wiling to consider these alternatives.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What About the Poor? How to Win the Healthcare Debate Without Selling Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.

SUMMARY:Day of Solidarity: Bringing awareness to the physician and medical student suicide epidemic
DESCRIPTION:Prevent Physician Suicide Click here to see the schedule for an event near you. \nImagine your excitement as a parent getting ready to attend your child’s graduation from medical school. Instead\, you attend his funeral–yet another medical student suicide victim. And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Ashley Maltz\, MD and Pamela Wible\, MD:\n\n\n“Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That’s the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide–a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? And how can we solve a problem when it’s hidden from us?” \n\nLacey Kohlmoos\, an Online Organizing Strategist at Care2 Petitions and wife of a 4th year medical student\, is championing National Day of Solidarity to Prevent Physician Suicide in Philadelphia on Saturday\, August 20th to bring awareness to this dire situation.\n\nFind a National Day of Solidarity event near you! \nThis event is also happening simultaneously in 11 cities across the country\, each with its own lineup of speakers and activities\, in case you can not make it to Philadelphia:\nAthens\, OH\nAustin\, TX\nChicago\, IL\nCleveland\, OH\nDublin\, OH\nHarrogate\, TN\nKansas City\, MO\nMiddletown\, NY\nPhiladelphia\, PA\nSaint Louis\, MO\nWashington\, DC\n\nThe more awareness we raise\, the more we can speak with one voice–a voice of solidarity–to find the root causes of physician and medical student suicide\, and promote solutions to turn the tide.\n\nFulfilling a life’s passion to care for others shouldn’t mean personal suffering–or worse.
