SUMMARY:Ohio State University College of Medicine — DEBATE: Federal Government Healthcare Programs vs. Free Markets
DESCRIPTION:  \nGovernment healthcare\, or free markets?\n  \nBe it RESOLVED: The Federal Government Can Provide More Compassionate and Efficient Healthcare for All Americans than the Free Market.\nDo you think you know enough about government-run healthcare? Free market healthcare? Ohio State University College of Medicine BRI chapter and Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP) cordially invite you to attend our debate wherein free markets will be pitched head on against federal government\, single payer healthcare programs. Which system provides the best solutions for the most people at the best prices? Which takes better care of the doctor-patient relationship? Which is more efficient? \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Benjamin Rush Institute\, in collaboration with Student for a National Health Program\, held a debate before 120 people at The Ohio State University College of Medicine\, with five physicians gathered to debate government and free market healthcare. The topic was intentionally broad in order to maximize the perspectives that students and faculty in attendance were exposed to. \nModerated by Dr. Ryan Nash\, Director of The Ohio State University Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities\, the debaters argued both sides of the following resolution “The Government Can Provide More Compassionate and Efficient Healthcare for All Americans than the Free Market.” \nDr. Brad Cotton\, Columbus-area emergency medicine physician\, and Dr. Donald Mack\, an assistant professor of clinical family medicine at Ohio State\, argued in favor of the resolution\, referencing their combined experience working with the underserved and the shortcomings of the current healthcare system. Arguing against the resolution were Dr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and Dr. Harry Jha\, an interventional radiologist at Penn with a knack for health economics. They championed against a potential one-size-fits-all health care model and suggested that our current health care crisis is an issue of poverty rather than “insurance” coverage. \nThe debate was vigorous and yet civil\, and ended with heavy audience participation. Attendees voted on the resolution both before and after listening to the debate. \nOSU medical students continue to express their gratitude to BRI organizers for bringing this important controversy to their attention\, and presenting it in a format that promotes balanced civil discourse. \n  \nPlease RSVP using the green REGISTER button above\, or here: OSU Healthcare Debate so that we can ensure enough refreshments for all. We look forward to you joining us for what is sure to be a lively\, enlightening evening of professional\, informed debate! \n5:00pm  Refreshments\, reception\, registration and pre-debate voting\n5:25pm  Welcome & Introduction\n5:30pm  Debate begins\n6:25pm  Moderator Q&A\n6:45pm  Audience Q&A\n7:00pm  Debate ends. Post-debate voting and tally.\n7:05pm  Announcement of results \nIn spite of ACA’s passage in 2009\, the debate over the general direction of much needed health reforms continues\, with some arguing that the law takes us in the wrong direction and others arguing that the law has not given the government enough control. Three debaters will uphold the resolution\, and two debaters will argue in opposition. \nARGUING THE AFFIRMATIVE: \nDr. Bradford W. Cotton Brad W. Cotton is a full-time emergency physician in the Columbus metro area. SUMMARY:Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science — MOVIE SCREENING: Code Black
DESCRIPTION:Code Black Movie Screening\nWe will be showing the movie Code Black to students at Rosalind Franklin to help them gain a better understanding of the healthcare environment and how our current health policies affect doctors on a daily basis. \nJoin us for snacks and appetizers following the film! \n \nFrom the film’s website:\nIn his vivid and thought-provoking filmmaking debut\, physician Ryan McGarry gives us unprecedented access to America’s busiest Emergency Department. Amidst real life-and-death situations\, McGarry follows a dedicated team of charismatic\, young doctors-in-training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened system. Their training ground and source of inspiration is “C-Booth\,” Los Angeles County Hospital’s legendary trauma bay\, the birthplace of Emergency Medicine\, where “more people have died and more people have been saved than in any other square footage in the United States.” CODE BLACK offers a tense\, doctor’s-eye view\, right into the heart of the healthcare debate – bringing us face to face with America’s only 24/7 safety net. \nBest Documentary winner at Los Angeles Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival\, as well as the Audience Award Winner at both Denver Starz Film Festival and Aspen FilmFest.

SUMMARY:University of Delaware — MOVIE SCREENING: Poverty\, Inc.: "The Business of Doing Good"
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: “The Business of Doing Good.”\nThe University of Delaware BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. \n  \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seven students attended the screening. \nFrom University of Delaware BRI chapter president\, Zachary Howell: \n \n“The week before the screening\, the event planners (BRI chapter VP\, Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) president and VP\, and I) had a pre-watch event so that we could talk about the movie effectively at the tabling event we planned to hold prior to the event to garner interest and be able to speak to the detrimental effects of foreign aid. \n“During the day on May 9th\, BRI and YAL held this tabling event. The tabling was very effective in opening people’s eyes to how foreign aid affects the communities of third-world countries. It seemed to be less of a problem of disagreement\, but more so one of never considering that there were adverse effects of current measures of fighting poverty. The head of academic enrichment at the school seemed to really like our table and spent about ten minutes discussing foreign aid and going through the books we had on display (Lessons from the Poor\, by Alvaro Vargas Llosa; Dead Aid\, by Dambisa Moyo; The Bottom Billion\, by Paul Collier; and\, The White Man’s Burden\, by William Easterly). The event was worthwhile in getting people to consider that there was another viewpoint; unfortunately\, many could not attend the viewing because they had to study for tests. \n“That night we played the movie in a classroom at the school. I began the event with a few questions to think about that I took from the supplementary materials. These included “What is poverty?”\, “What is charity?”\, “What is something you can do to help the poor and what is the likelihood that you will actually do it?” and a few others. Those who came really liked the movie and seemed to be very engaged with it while it was playing. After the video\, everyone stayed for a post-movie discussion. I had prepared a few things to say for after the move to wrap up the pre-movie questions and a few things that I thought were important to know when they left. I talked about how reducing charity to writing a check really cheapens what charity can actually be for people. I also told how the movie changed my future plans. I had always thought I wanted to help with delivering health care to Latin America since part of my family is from Venezuela and Mexico\, but this movie taught me that the best way to rectify the situation is to work to teach the actual medical professionals in the various communities\, rather than a one-time “Doctors Without Borders” style treat-and-leave program. I also told how the purpose of this movie is not to change your desire to help the poor\, but rather to fine-tune our perception of poverty and the capabilities of those who find themselves in poverty. \n“After\, there were some questions from those who attended and I was very satisfied by the questions they asked because they showed a great deal of personal reflection and interaction with the content of the video.” \n

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn't—Getting Medical Costs Under Control
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivers a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What Insurance Is and Isn’t—Getting Medical Costs Under Control. \nThere is much talk about how to control medical costs. Medical inflation continues to outpace general inflation. Why this is happening has much to do with the fact that what is called “health insurance” really isn’t insurance. We argue that coerced wealth distribution is immoral\, but this argument does not resonate with everyone. Being abel to also argue the economic aspects of healthcare can strengthen your ability to make the case for freedom in medical care. Come learn about the nature of insurance\, what it is and isn’t\, why current health policy is doomed to fail\, and what better alternatives exist.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, delivered a talk at ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: Engaging Our Future Physicians. \nIt is important that we undertake the task of engaging our future physicians. What are they learning about health policy? Given the state of higher education today\, it’s no surprise that health policy instruction at medical schools is government-centric. But what is surprising is how little formal policy instruction students receive\, which presents a great opportunity to interject the voice of reason into the conversation. Benjamin Rush Institute is doing exactly that. In just the fall semester of 2016\, we reached 1300 medical student5s. Come hear how we are presenting the ideas of individual rights and limited government in a way that even liberal medical students are wiling to consider these alternatives.

SUMMARY:ATLAS Summit 2016 @ Freedom Fest: What About the Poor? How to Win the Healthcare Debate Without Selling Your Soul
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.

SUMMARY:Day of Solidarity: Bringing awareness to the physician and medical student suicide epidemic
DESCRIPTION:Prevent Physician Suicide Click here to see the schedule for an event near you. \nImagine your excitement as a parent getting ready to attend your child’s graduation from medical school. Instead\, you attend his funeral–yet another medical student suicide victim. And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Ashley Maltz\, MD and Pamela Wible\, MD:\n\n\n“Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That’s the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide–a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? And how can we solve a problem when it’s hidden from us?” \n\nLacey Kohlmoos\, an Online Organizing Strategist at Care2 Petitions and wife of a 4th year medical student\, is championing National Day of Solidarity to Prevent Physician Suicide in Philadelphia on Saturday\, August 20th to bring awareness to this dire situation.\n\nFind a National Day of Solidarity event near you! \nThis event is also happening simultaneously in 11 cities across the country\, each with its own lineup of speakers and activities\, in case you can not make it to Philadelphia:\nAthens\, OH\nAustin\, TX\nChicago\, IL\nCleveland\, OH\nDublin\, OH\nHarrogate\, TN\nKansas City\, MO\nMiddletown\, NY\nPhiladelphia\, PA\nSaint Louis\, MO\nWashington\, DC\n\nThe more awareness we raise\, the more we can speak with one voice–a voice of solidarity–to find the root causes of physician and medical student suicide\, and promote solutions to turn the tide.\n\nFulfilling a life’s passion to care for others shouldn’t mean personal suffering–or worse.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama\, Birmingham—LECTURE SCREENING: Why BRI supports free market healthcare policy\, with Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend BRI-UABSOM chapter’s free lecture screening on free market healthcare policy: \nJules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD on free market healthcare policy\nWhy BRI supports a free market approach to healthcare policy\, featuring Jules Madrigal-Dersch.\nIn March 2016\, BRI board member and med-peds doctor Juliette Madrigal-Dersch\, MD\, spoke to BRI student leaders at our annual leadership conference about her joy in running an independent cash practice in rural Texas\, and why free market healthcare policies make sense. \nAt this meeting\, our hope is to educate potential members about BRI’s mission in support of free market healthcare solutions\, and to encourage BRI-UABSOM chapter involvement and membership. \nWe will provide light refreshments and snacks encouraging guests to bring their own lunch. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The BRI-UAB chapter screened a pre-recorded presentation delivered by Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch at the 2015-2016 BRI Leadership Conference held at American Enterprise Institute in March 2016. Dr. Madrigal-Dersch spoke about why she chose to deliver market-based care rather than follow the existing insurance-based care model. \nThe event opened with a welcome to the attendees from UAB BRI officers\, and quickly proceeded to the lecture screening. The lecture was part explanatory and part testimonial as to how and why Dr. Madrigal-Dersch chose to enter into the direct primary care model\, and the benefits the model provides to herself\, her family\, and her patients. \nAfter the screening\, the floor was opened up for questions. Seeing none\, Thompson Foy\, UAB-BRI president\, proceeded to inform the attendees about the next UAB BRI meeting on October 26th\, 2016\, and closed the meeting. \n“We hoped to have more attendees\, but we believe that the people who did come found the event both informative and enjoyable. Among attendees\, the message of the lecture screening was very well received.” ~Thompson Foy\, BRI-UAB chapter founder & president \n

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine\, Columbus—LECTURE: A Free Market Approach to Healthcare: Cash Based Medical Practices
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch on cash based medical practices\nAll students\, faculty\, and practicing physicians are welcome to attend our inaugural 2016-17 BRI-OSUMC event on cash based medical practices. We welcome Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD and BRI board member\, to speak about her cash based Med-Peds practice in rural Texas. Having this event early in the year may be important in giving our new M1’s a refreshing\, new perspective on the broad range of Primary Care practices and encouraging future physicians to look into Family Medicine as a enjoyable career option. \nWe encourage practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals to attend to get information on how to scale a cash based medical practice model like Dr. Madrigal’s to an urban setting. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 40 students attended. Overall\, our event was a success. The presentation Dr. Madrigal gave was exactly what we had in mind. In spite of some technical difficulties\, these issues did not really take away from the message we were trying convey. \nMost people were receptive to the ideas and especially because she made her lifestyle seem very appealing and her patient population so grateful and well served. Most of the audience had good questions and seemed to benefit greatly from seeing Dr. Madrigal’s perspective. She was receptive to answering many of their questions afterwards.

SUMMARY:OUHCOM-Dublin—LECTURE: Free Market Medicine: A Cash Based Alternative
DESCRIPTION:Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD at OUHCOM\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-four students attended Dr. Madrigal’s presentation. She talked about her cash based practice in Texas\, where basic health needs are handled in a direct patient-doctor relationship\, and health insurance is used for what it was originally intended: catastrophic events. When a doctor and patients are in charge of costs and treatments\, the doctor is empowered to negotiate with lab companies\, imaging companies\, and pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare service providers to keep patient costs down. Dr. Madrigal described how her model of direct primary care works for all of her patients: the really sick\, the really healthy\, the rich\, the poor\, and the middle class.  Dr. Madrigal has removed government interference\, over-regulation\, and red tape out of the picture to keeps costs down\, care quality high\, patients happy and physicians happy. \n“Dr. Madrigal’s talk was very informative. I came to medical school to become a Primary Care Physician\, but have recently been discouraged. She re-lit the fire in me to pursue this dream and showed me that it is possible to to be a PCP without having to deal with the ACA. Her talk also persuaded me to attend a DPC conference in Dallas\, Texas.” ~ Jacob Chevlin\, OMS I and BRI member \nAll students\, faculty\, and practicing physicians are welcome to attend BRI-OUHCOM/Dublin’s event on cash based medical practices. \nHaving this event early in the year may be important in giving our new OMS1’s a refreshing\, new perspective on the broad range of Primary Care practices and encouraging future physicians to look into Family Medicine as a enjoyable career. She will place an emphasis on a free market approach to healthcare which allows her to bypass government red tape. \nWe encourage practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals to attend to get information on how to scale a cash based medical practice model like Dr. Madrigal’s to an urban setting. \nRefreshments will be served. \nThis article is insightful reading preparation for the discussion. \n

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Freedom Healthworks: The Transition to Direct Primary Care
DESCRIPTION:Adam Habig of Freedom Healthworks\nDirect Primary Care: Could it be your business model once you’re a practicing physician? All are welcome to join BRI-Marian University chapter members for refreshments and to hear Adam Habig\, co-founder of Freedom Healthworks speak about what made him interested in Direct Primary Care (DPC)\, what DPC is\, along with how his company is helping doctors in Indiana transition to DPC models. You can watch a short intro video to Freedom Healthworks here. \nAdam Habig is a native of central Indiana with thirteen years of experience innovating within the realm of health care delivery. In 2003\, Mr. Habig co-founded the biosciences technology firm ISPRIT Systems\, which pioneered the use of a sophisticated information technology platform to better diagnose and manage complex chronic illness\, ultimately ascending to the role of Chief Executive Officer of the firm. ISPRIT anticipated the elevation of chronic disease prevention and management as a chief cost control\, ultimately attracting the attention of some of the world’s leading companies within the health insurance and diagnostics fields. \nIn 2013\, observing the rapid changes pervading healthcare delivery\, Mr. Habig co-founded Freedom Healthworks to unleash the innovative potential of direct primary care on a broad scale. Our full service\, turnkey model enables doctors to regain their freedom by joining the rapidly expanding movement to disentangle from the insurance and government-driven payment system. Physicians can once again deliver high quality care free of interference while setting prices their patients can afford. Patients regain the freedom to purchase routine primary care and preventive services (90% of all medical care) directly from their doctors for clear\, standardized prices\, while relegating insurance to its traditional role as a safeguard against catastrophic events. A licensed attorney\, Mr. Habig maintains an independent law practice in addition to his leadership duties with Freedom Healthworks. He currently resides in Indianapolis with his wife\, Megan. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Adam Habig\, co-founder of Freedom Healthworks\, spoke to eight event attendees about Direct Primary Care (DPC). He talked about DPC and what it offered doctors and patients. He had two cutouts showing all the regulations in the US Healthcare System\, along with a table of the top 20 concerns of physicians for 2016. DPC gets rid of most of those regulations in the current healthcare system\, along with most of the concerns for 2016 physicians. He spoke on how his parents (both physicians) were considering retirement in the prime of their medical careers. They were burned out with not being able to practice medicine the way they wanted too. Adam and his brother Chris decided to focus their time on creating Freedom Healthworks. Their company focuses on transitioning doctors of all ages into DPC practices. They have come up with a template for doctors allowing them to reduce some of the main challenges to starting up a DPC clinic: finding patients\, business decisions\, administrative work. Westfield Premier Physicians (http://www.westfieldpremier.com/index.html)\, is Freedom Healthworks pilot clinic\, and they look forward to proving what DPC clinics can provide doctors and patients. \n“I thought the event went great. I would have liked to see more people attend to hear what Adam had to say. Direct Primary Care (DPC) is an idea that interests many people when they hear the message. The people that did come to the event really enjoyed it. A couple people attending didn’t know much about DPC\, but they became very engaged and asked questions\, excited to learn more.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian chapter founder & president.

SUMMARY:SPN 23rd Annual Meeting\, Grand Rapids\, MI
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director\, moderated a Docs 4 Patient Care panel on health policy in a breakout session. CON laws and other aspects of healthcare policy were discussed. \nFrom the SPNAM.org official website: The SPN Annual Meeting started in 1993 in Traverse City\, Michigan. A dozen people met in a room with the hope of building a robust network of state think tanks throughout the country. Today\, the SPN Annual Meeting brings together over 900 people from around the country\, including state and national leaders\, influencers\, and professionals. \nWe believe that being good enough is not enough to win in the rapidly evolving political environment. We can’t afford to be outgunned\, outmanned and outspent. The future of the country depends on it. \nThat is why the State Policy Network has hosted the Annual Meeting for 23 years running. \nThis year\, the Annual Meeting is returning to the state where it all started. Freedom fighters will gather in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, with an intentional focus on developing the solutions and skills to advance freedom at both the state and national level. Through the lens of our 2015 theme – Experience Freedom – we will consider ways to sharpen our solutions and strategies and help our core audiences envision their need for freedom. We will inspire and challenge ourselves to give Americans opportunities to experience the benefits of freedom to their everyday lives. \nThe program focuses on building leaders\, refining operations\, cultivating excellent communication and outreach strategies\, analyzing policy priorities and training top-notch fundraisers. The SPN Annual Meeting is also the only outlet where state and national leaders can chart collaborative strategies together. SPN purposefully creates an environment to facilitate connections and build coalitions.
