DESCRIPTION:Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past\nFor the first time\, Benjamin Rush Institute is opening its Friday Keynote Luncheon address with Dr. Raul Artal to the greater OSU\, OUHCOM\, other local universities\, and the greater Columbus community. Raul Artal\, MD\, FACOG\, FACSM will be our luncheon Keynote Speaker on the topic Medical Ethics and the Holocaust: Lessons From the Past. \nFriday’s luncheon event is part of BRI’s annual student Leadership Conference and is typically a private event for attending students only. This year’s conference theme is Ethics of the Patient-Doctor Relationship\, and we find the questions and dialogue that are part of this discussion to be so vital to influencing positive healthcare policy\, that we are opening this up to reach more people. \n\nDr. Artal\, a Holocaust survivor\, was born in a Nazi concentration camp. He is the Chairman and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Obstetrics\, Gynecology and Women’s Health at Saint Louis University. There are some exciting models that are achieving these goals\, both in the US and internationally: cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty\, MD. What can we learn from these entrepreneurial models to help address the cost and access challenges our country faces? \nLunch guaranteed to those who RSVP 48-hours in advance. Registration Form. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The Health Policy Discussion Club at SUNY Stony Brook University School of Medicine hosted this event\, supported by Benjamin Rush Institute. Seventy-five students attended and were treated to lunch. \nDr. Haynes gave an interesting talk on “Innovations in Health Care Delivery” that discussed some exciting models which are achieving the goals of bringing affordable health care both in the US and internationally. These included cash-based practices like Direct Primary Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, and from India\, the non-profit Aravind Eye Care system of India\, and the for-profit hospitals of cardiac surgeon\, Devi Shetty. \nThe event was greatly attended\, mainly by first year medical students. Food was served and the lecture was offered as an intellectual learning opportunity (ILO)\, which attendance to three is required to pass one of our first year classes. \nWith this event being the first event that the health policy discussion club has held under new leadership\, we believe that it was incredibly successful. The students were fully engaged with Dr. Haynes’ presentation and enjoyed the free lunch and the opportunity to obtain school credit for their attendance. Many of the students were exposed to the idea of free-market medical care for the first time and\, again\, found this event to be very useful\, especially since there are no real opportunities outside of the health policy discussion club to learn about many different approaches to solving the problems surrounding health care in the U.S.” ~Asha Liverpool\, Health Policy Discussion Club \n“That was a really interesting talk. I hadn’t been exposed to those ideas before. It’s interesting how many other options there are in medicine than the current system.” ~First year medical student\, Stony Brook School of Medicine \n“I really liked the talk. There is so much that I thought was just par for the course in medicine simply because that is the way I had seen it be done. It was interesting seeing the alternative direct care models and how that can provide less expensive care by cutting out the insurance companies. By getting rid of a lot of the overhead\, patients don’t have to pay for billing departments and insurance companies. It challenged me to consider ways to practice medicine that I had not been exposed to before.” ~First year medical student

DESCRIPTION:The BRI-MCW chapter with the MCW Rural Medicine Interest Group hosted a teleconference lunch talk with Dr. James Kennedy on medical micropractice. There were 57 students in attendance. \nAttendees were sent an article giving an overview of a medical micropractice\, including topics such as an overall description\, how physicians in micropractice build intimate relationships with their patients\, and strategies that make a micropractice economically viable. During the event\, lunch was provided and Dr. James Kennedy remotely gave a presentation detailing his own micropractice in Winter Park\, CO. He discussed some of the barriers to beginning a micropractice\, some of the things that he enjoyed about his practice\, and also detailed logistical issues such as taking call and reimbursement. Dr. Kennedy also gave an update as to where his practice was currently\, commenting that it has grown from being completely solo\, to now having 2 other physicians. SUMMARY:OSUMC\, Columbus\, OH—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this FREE lunch lecture event\, Direct Primary Care: Transforming Patient and Physician Wellness. The BRI-OSU chapter teamed up with the wellness council at OSU medical school to host a lunch talk with Dr. Heather Bartlett\, a local DPC physician\, owner and founder of The Bartlett Medical Clinic & Wellness Center. She will talk about how her practice works and how it enhances her patients’—and her own—overall wellness. We will be serving Jimmy Johns subs. The wellness council will be supplying the food and Coke will provide the drinks. \nThose who RSVP within 48 hours of the event will be guaranteed food. There is convenient parking at the 9th Ave garage across the street. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended the talk. Dr. Bartlett began by giving her story\, talking about all the problems in the current healthcare system that she encountered during her early years as a physician. She then talked about the process of starting her own DPC clinic\, and talked about all the ways that DPC can cut costs to provide enormous value to patients. She also talked about all the ways that her practice has saved her own personal wellness\, which is important in the face of so much physician burnout. \nMany students stayed 45 minutes after the talk was over to ask questions – there was tons of interest in DPC! One medical student even said that she planned to open a DPC practice in the future. A pre-med student there talked with Dr. Bartlett afterwards to organize a talk for a broader undergraduate audience as well. \nDr. Bartlett did a phenomenal job and was a lot of fun to listen to. I would recommend her to any other chapter looking to host a DPC physician and also for the 2018 Leadership Conference.” ~Morgan Kohls\, BRI-OSU chapter president

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for this dinner lecture as we continue the discussion of two different viewpoints surrounding the topic “Is Healthcare a Right?”—a crucial consideration in the argument for and against universal healthcare. \n \n  \nThis dinner talk with our very own Dr. Beth Haynes\, Medical Director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and will be entitled “Are rights relevant to healthcare? An inquiry.” Both talks will have plenty of time for Q&A as we hope to actively engage this topic. \nOur lunch talk (separate RSVP requested) will be held by Dr. Fabrice Jotterand\, a Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Bioethics\, and will be entitled “Keeping the Debate on a Moral Ground: Why Health Care is not a Right.” \nPlease RSVP for both or either event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty students and faculty attended this dinner talk. This was the second of two talks the BRI-MCW chapter hosted on the topic of “Is Healthcare a Right?” Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI medical director came to Wisconsin and\, after attending the lunch talk\, gave us an incredible\, conversation based dinner talk. She challenged preconceived notions about ethics and rights while posing questions from a “beginners mind.” This approach was able to challenge many students—as can be seen in the comments provided. \nI really enjoyed these events. Dr. Beth Haynes was both very engaging and open to conversation. I felt that she had a very strong opinion and appreciated her thought process. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join us for this lunch lecture—the first in a 2-part discussion both occurring on 1/17/18\, one at lunch\, and one at dinner. \nWe will consider two different viewpoints surrounding the topic “Is Healthcare a Right?”—a crucial consideration in the argument for and against universal healthcare. \n \n  \nOur lunch talk will be held by Dr. Fabrice Jotterand\, a Medical College of Wisconsin Associate Professor of Bioethics\, and will be entitled “Keeping the Debate on a Moral Ground: Why Health Care is not a Right.” \nWe will also be hosting a dinner talk (separate RSVP requested) with our very own Dr. Beth Haynes\, Medical Director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, and will be entitled “Are rights relevant to healthcare? An inquiry.” Both talks will have plenty of time for Q&A as we hope to actively engage this topic. \nPlease RSVP for both or either event to ensure enough refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty-six students and faculty attended this lecture. This was an exciting\, fun\, and informative day. Our BRI-MCW chapter put on two events on 1/17/18. Both revolved around the question: “Is healthcare a right?” This lunch talk with Dr. Jotterand\, a PhD bioethicist from Switzerland\, was the first of the two events. He argued that it is difficult to say that healthcare is a right\, but argued that on a moral ground we should determine that it is a social obligation for us to provide it to those around us. \nThis event went very smoothly\, it was incredible that Dr. Haynes came to the lunch talk and was able to converse with Dr. Jotterand. Dr. Ticoras is an internal medicine physician who now practices patient advocacy full-time at Guided Patient Services. \nYouTube video \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Ticoras described her journey as an internal medicine physician and how she became a full time patient advocate. She went through the details of her responsibilities as a patient advocate. She also gave specific examples of how she has affected patient outcomes through her work.\nThis was a very casual round table event where Dr. Ticoras gave a presentation about half the time and we were able to ask her questions about her work the other half. This was a very rewarding talk and helped illustrate the importance of the doctor patient relationship.

SUMMARY:OSU College of Medicine—DEBATE: Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS)\, or Physician Aid in Dying
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this debate on Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). There will be short opening remarks by our presenters\, followed by the debate\, with 30 minutes at the end for audience questions. We are very excited to have some experts in this field participate in this debate\, including a physician who has participated in PAS. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: One hundred and sixty-five (165) people attended.  The debate began with catered desserts and beverages in the lobby from 6:30-7:00pm. This turned out to be the perfect amount of time to let people trickle in\, mingle with others\, get some food\, and take their seats.\nAt 7:00pm\, Morgan Kohls & Laura Sooy\, OSU-BRI co-presidents\, and Isabelle Berrisford (OSU Bioethics) introduced BRI\, the OSU Bioethics society\, and our moderator\, Dr. Stephanie Fabbro. Dr. Fabbro then gave a brief history of PAS/PAID in the US and provided some helpful definitions for the audience. She then introduced the debaters\, and allowed for pre-debate voting. Each debater was then given 3 minutes to make an opening statement. Next\, a series of 8 questions were asked. Each question was aimed towards a particular debater. That debater was given 2 minutes\, their teammate was given two minutes\, and then one member of the opposition was allowed a two minute rebuttal. After all questions were asked\, there was time for closing statements from each debater\, audience questions\, then post-debate voting. The side in opposition to PAS/PAID won the debate. \nThe event exceeded my expectations and other experiences. Each debater was knowledgeable and persuasive in different ways. The turnout was great and the audience seemed engaged the entire time. The only thing I would change is that we went a little overtime with main questions\, which only allowed for four audience questions. The debaters also took a great deal of time back and forth on the audience questions. Dr. Smith not only showed the participants the facilities\, but explained the thought process behind the design and layout of the building. As a large number of attendees were first and second year medical students\, Dr. Smith explained the importance and convenience of a well designed facility to help maximize the value of care patients receive. \nThis event allowed participants to learn more about Free-Market medical practices\, medical tourism (domestic and international)\, and physician designed/owned/controlled practice settings. Dr. Smith not only gave us a history on the process of opening a free market health care service\, but he also taught and explained the way health care pricing currently works in free-market and non-for profit institutions. \nAs a group\, everyone was very pleased with how informative and enthusiastic Dr. Smith was. He offers an alternative viewpoint to academic medicine\, which received positive feedback from many attendees. Other students who did not respond as positively raised concerns over the diversity of those doctors (there were few women) who practice at the Surgery Center of Oklahoma and how to apply this model outside of surgery and primary care.” ~Samantha Kelly\, OUHSC-BRI secretary \nStudents of the OUCOM chapter of BRI visited the Surgery Center of Oklahoma to learn about the efficient and affordable healthcare provided by this physician owned and run facility. DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: “The Business of Doing Good.”\nBRI-GWU chapter will be hosting a screening of the award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc. We hope to see you there as we delve into the complex dynamics of “big business” fighting poverty. All are welcome. Please RSVP to ensure enough refreshments for all. \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. \nDrawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The GWU-BRI chapter president\, Brandon Robinson\, presented a brief history of Benjamin Rush Institute\, including it’s namesake\, Dr. Benjamin Rush and how BRI’s mission is to protect the doctor-patient relationship through free-market enterprises. He gave the example of direct primary care\, how the physician is responsible and capable of customizing the relationship with their patient to best suit their patient’s needs. \nAfter the introduction to BRI\, the documentary film “Poverty\, Inc.” was shown. Feedback from the film was positive\, as students at GW are generally interested in global poverty with multiple other student organizations engaging in anti-poverty efforts.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a talk on medical entrepreneurship with Mr. Ramin Lalezari\, CEO and president of Sling Health St. Louis\, a company whose objective is to make medical entrepreneurship attainable for medical students and physicians. \nPlease RSVP so we can ensure enough refreshments for all. There is free parking on Caroline Street. \nFrom Sling Health’s website: \nSling Health STL the founding chapter of a national student-run non-profit organization founded in 2013 by medical students at Washington University in St. Louis in order to confront the surplus of unsolved clinical problems they encountered within the hospitals. Our organization brings together a diverse group of students\, clinicians\, and local entrepreneurs to develop and commercialize medtech solutions that ultimately improve patient health care. \n\nOur main objectives are:\nTo make medical entrepreneurship attainable for students and physicians\nTo integrate students from the schools of medicine\, business\, engineering\, and arts & sciences to develop novel devices and software in order to tackle unmet clinical needs.\n\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five students attended. \n \nRamin was a good speaker. He went over different types of patents and how to get more involved in medical entrepreneurship. He also invited students to contact him for more opportunities. We usually expect a larger audience; however\, our anatomy curriculum was changed this year to become more strenuous so fewer M1 students showed up. We felt the event was helpful for the students. DESCRIPTION:Medical Care in Communist China: \nPlease join us in welcoming Anastasia Lin to the University of California San Diego. is an award-winning actress\, beauty pageant titleholder\, and human rights advocate. In 2015\, Lin won the Miss World Canada title\, and was to represent Canada at the Miss World pageant in China. However\, she was refused a visa and declared a persona non grata by Chinese authorities for her outspoken views on the country’s human rights violations and persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The news of her rejection—and subsequent attempt to enter China—caused global media attention for weeks\, leading to a front page article in The New York Times and op-eds in major newspapers. Since then\, she has been invited to speak at the National Press Club in Washington\, DC\, the Oxford Union\, and the Geneva Human Rights Summit at the UN\, Oslo Freedom Forum and has testified in the US Congress\, the UK Parliament\, and the Taiwanese Legislative Assembly. DESCRIPTION:The OSU-COM BRI chapter has teamed up with the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation to show “The Bleeding Edge\,” a film about the organ market in China\, to medical and premedical students at OSU. All are welcome to attend this screening. Lunch will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated to ensure enough food for all. \nTo watch the trailer\, click here. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: OSUCOM-BRI partnered with the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation in screening the critically acclaimed film “The Bleeding Edge.” \nThis film has received numerous awards for its story\, which is based on true events that have occurred in China including organ harvesting from prisoners of the government. We had approximately 26 people in attendance including Morgan and myself. A large number of these participants had not attended a BRI event before\, as they were first year medical students. The film was wonderful\, but very very intense. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture by Dr. John Meurer\, PhD\, MCW-BRI chapter faculty advisor on understanding economics in the US healthcare system. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. John Meurer has been very involved in healthcare policy since completing a policy fellowship in Washington\, DC. We first met with him early in the fall to discuss the possibility of him forming a lunch talk that would educate current students on how our healthcare system functions. \nWe desired this event because in order to have future\, interesting conversations about the economics of our healthcare system everyone must have a base level of understanding. As medical school rarely educate students on the internal functioning of our healthcare system\, we hoped to provide them with a 5000 foot view with this lunch talk. We were very pleased to have almost 80 students attend this lecture. \nThis was a spectacular\, well attended event that went very smoothly and provided a good base-level of education about healthcare economics.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, MCW-BRI chapter \nWe posed this event to Dr. Meurer as\, “things I wish I had known before starting my practice.” As such we spoke about such things as medicare\, Medicaid\, Insurance payers\, residency funding\, the affordable healthcare act\, recently proposed bills that would replace ACA\, and what percent of healthcare spending goes into what (e.g. Hospital administration).

The BRI chapter will be sharing coffee\, juice\, bagels and donuts in the hallway outside of the lecture halls to help you guys out. Come find out about BRI . . . and GOOD LUCK in those classes! \nThis event takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seventy students were treated to breakfast goodies during their first morning of Gross Anatomy classes. OUHSC-BRI provided breakfast of various Panera Bread bagels/pastries/juice/coffee from right before first lecture at 7:30am until around 11:00am. BRI Officers were present to greet and answer questions and pamphlets about BRI were on the table by the food items. This was the first morning of Gross Anatomy for the first year students and we had probably around 70 come and go before class and in between lectures each hour. \nThis was a low pressure event and mostly just spread good cheer\, but we also talked seriously to about 8-10 students and a few took pamphlets. SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine—ORG FAIR: Meet BRI!
DESCRIPTION:The BRI-Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai (ISMMS) will be present at our campus org fair. Every year the ISMMS student council hosts a “student activities fair” where new first-year students can meet with representatives of the bewildering variety of student groups represented here. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Our goal at this event was to “get our name out” to the student body at large\, and to find and recruit students interested in the cause of health care freedom. We were successful on both counts. In particular\, we were able to identify a pair of first year students with a strong and pronounced interest in the ideas that set BRI apart from the left-leaning majority of health policy groups at Sinai.
