SUMMARY:OSU College of Medicine—DEBATE: Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS)\, or Physician Aid in Dying
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this debate on Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). There will be short opening remarks by our presenters\, followed by the debate\, with 30 minutes at the end for audience questions. We are very excited to have some experts in this field participate in this debate\, including a physician who has participated in PAS. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: One hundred and sixty-five (165) people attended.  The debate began with catered desserts and beverages in the lobby from 6:30-7:00pm. This turned out to be the perfect amount of time to let people trickle in\, mingle with others\, get some food\, and take their seats.\nAt 7:00pm\, Morgan Kohls & Laura Sooy\, OSU-BRI co-presidents\, and Isabelle Berrisford (OSU Bioethics) introduced BRI\, the OSU Bioethics society\, and our moderator\, Dr. Stephanie Fabbro. Dr. Fabbro then gave a brief history of PAS/PAID in the US and provided some helpful definitions for the audience. She then introduced the debaters\, and allowed for pre-debate voting. Each debater was then given 3 minutes to make an opening statement. Next\, a series of 8 questions were asked. Each question was aimed towards a particular debater. That debater was given 2 minutes\, their teammate was given two minutes\, and then one member of the opposition was allowed a two minute rebuttal. After all questions were asked\, there was time for closing statements from each debater\, audience questions\, then post-debate voting. The side in opposition to PAS/PAID won the debate. \nThe event exceeded my expectations and other experiences. Each debater was knowledgeable and persuasive in different ways. The turnout was great and the audience seemed engaged the entire time. The only thing I would change is that we went a little overtime with main questions\, which only allowed for four audience questions. The debaters also took a great deal of time back and forth on the audience questions. DESCRIPTION:Please join the BRI-OUHSC chapter for a tour of Dr. Keith Smith’s Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, one of the first direct pay\, price transparent surgery centers in the world. Come and see a real\, live medical business thriving without insurance companies and unreasonable regulatory interference. \nRSVP for further instructions about where to meet\, carpooling\, etc. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Nine students visited the Surgery Center of Oklahoma and received a tour from Dr. Keith Smith\, one of the co-founders of the institution. Dr. Smith not only showed the participants the facilities\, but explained the thought process behind the design and layout of the building. As a large number of attendees were first and second year medical students\, Dr. Smith explained the importance and convenience of a well designed facility to help maximize the value of care patients receive. \nThis event allowed participants to learn more about Free-Market medical practices\, medical tourism (domestic and international)\, and physician designed/owned/controlled practice settings. Dr. Smith not only gave us a history on the process of opening a free market health care service\, but he also taught and explained the way health care pricing currently works in free-market and non-for profit institutions. \nAs a group\, everyone was very pleased with how informative and enthusiastic Dr. Smith was. He offers an alternative viewpoint to academic medicine\, which received positive feedback from many attendees. Other students who did not respond as positively raised concerns over the diversity of those doctors (there were few women) who practice at the Surgery Center of Oklahoma and how to apply this model outside of surgery and primary care.” ~Samantha Kelly\, OUHSC-BRI secretary \nStudents of the OUCOM chapter of BRI visited the Surgery Center of Oklahoma to learn about the efficient and affordable healthcare provided by this physician owned and run facility. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. \nDrawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The GWU-BRI chapter president\, Brandon Robinson\, presented a brief history of Benjamin Rush Institute\, including it’s namesake\, Dr. Benjamin Rush and how BRI’s mission is to protect the doctor-patient relationship through free-market enterprises. He gave the example of direct primary care\, how the physician is responsible and capable of customizing the relationship with their patient to best suit their patient’s needs. \nAfter the introduction to BRI\, the documentary film “Poverty\, Inc.” was shown. Feedback from the film was positive\, as students at GW are generally interested in global poverty with multiple other student organizations engaging in anti-poverty efforts.

He went over different types of patents and how to get more involved in medical entrepreneurship. He also invited students to contact him for more opportunities. We usually expect a larger audience; however\, our anatomy curriculum was changed this year to become more strenuous so fewer M1 students showed up. We felt the event was helpful for the students. However\, she was refused a visa and declared a persona non grata by Chinese authorities for her outspoken views on the country’s human rights violations and persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The news of her rejection—and subsequent attempt to enter China—caused global media attention for weeks\, leading to a front page article in The New York Times and op-eds in major newspapers. Since then\, she has been invited to speak at the National Press Club in Washington\, DC\, the Oxford Union\, and the Geneva Human Rights Summit at the UN\, Oslo Freedom Forum and has testified in the US Congress\, the UK Parliament\, and the Taiwanese Legislative Assembly. We had approximately 26 people in attendance including Morgan and myself. A large number of these participants had not attended a BRI event before\, as they were first year medical students. The film was wonderful\, but very very intense. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture by Dr. John Meurer\, PhD\, MCW-BRI chapter faculty advisor on understanding economics in the US healthcare system. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. John Meurer has been very involved in healthcare policy since completing a policy fellowship in Washington\, DC. We first met with him early in the fall to discuss the possibility of him forming a lunch talk that would educate current students on how our healthcare system functions. \nWe desired this event because in order to have future\, interesting conversations about the economics of our healthcare system everyone must have a base level of understanding. As medical school rarely educate students on the internal functioning of our healthcare system\, we hoped to provide them with a 5000 foot view with this lunch talk. We were very pleased to have almost 80 students attend this lecture. \nThis was a spectacular\, well attended event that went very smoothly and provided a good base-level of education about healthcare economics.” ~Benjamin Stultz\, MCW-BRI chapter \nWe posed this event to Dr. Meurer as\, “things I wish I had known before starting my practice.” As such we spoke about such things as medicare\, Medicaid\, Insurance payers\, residency funding\, the affordable healthcare act\, recently proposed bills that would replace ACA\, and what percent of healthcare spending goes into what (e.g. Hospital administration).

Come find out about BRI . . . and GOOD LUCK in those classes! \nThis event takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seventy students were treated to breakfast goodies during their first morning of Gross Anatomy classes. OUHSC-BRI provided breakfast of various Panera Bread bagels/pastries/juice/coffee from right before first lecture at 7:30am until around 11:00am. BRI Officers were present to greet and answer questions and pamphlets about BRI were on the table by the food items. This was the first morning of Gross Anatomy for the first year students and we had probably around 70 come and go before class and in between lectures each hour. \nThis was a low pressure event and mostly just spread good cheer\, but we also talked seriously to about 8-10 students and a few took pamphlets. DESCRIPTION:The BRI-Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai (ISMMS) will be present at our campus org fair. Every year the ISMMS student council hosts a “student activities fair” where new first-year students can meet with representatives of the bewildering variety of student groups represented here. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Our goal at this event was to “get our name out” to the student body at large\, and to find and recruit students interested in the cause of health care freedom. We were successful on both counts. In particular\, we were able to identify a pair of first year students with a strong and pronounced interest in the ideas that set BRI apart from the left-leaning majority of health policy groups at Sinai.

Food will be provided at the event\, as coordinated by Benjamin Rush Institute student leaders. \nMs. Lin appeared in The Bleeding Edge\, a film about China’s human organs market. \nInformation on Anastasia Lin on Wikipedia. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:  Ms. Anastasia Lin gave a very powerful and dramatic presentation to 20 attendees. \n \nI was pleased with how engaged students were with questions after the event. Many had no idea of the medical atrocities occurring in China. This event exceeded my expectations. Ms. Lin did a tremendous job delivering a captivating narrative. My only small comment\, and one which did not adversely affect her presentation\, is that healthcare is not really her message per se. Rather\, anti-communisim/pro-freedom was the crux of her message. She speaks more towards the dystopian extreme end of total government control of a healthcare system. She knows how to emotionally capture a crowd and gave a phenomenal presentation. The movie centered around a human heart that was harvested against the will a of a political prisoner. He will be giving a talk on his experience in private practice and the challenges and opportunities he faced in that sector. \nFor more information on Dr. Wright\, please visit his website. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Wright prefaced his talk by sharing his experience and path through medicine\, and then he opened up to the audience for questions. \nThere were 36 students in attendance\, and we managed to have Dr. Wright answer at least 10 questions on topics ranging from his experience on the board at Northwell Group to efficiencies he’s made in his practice—to the pros and cons of his time in private practice vs. as an employee in a hospital system. \nOne student remarked on how knowledgable Dr. Wright was about the broad coverage of topics covered throughout the Q&A. Another student expressed gratitude that we were able to get more time with Dr. Wright in this Q&A format. Come hear about BRI\, talk to fellow students about healthcare policy\, medical innovation\, and make new  friends! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: As our annual kick off event\, MCW’s BRI chapter provides milk and cookies for a round-table discussion about the economics of healthcare. This generally involves a few pre-planned topics with discussion questions. \nThis year we talked about price transparency and employer provided health insurance. With regard to price transparency we spoke about free market ideals with the importance of price transparency for consumer selection\, but we also spoke about the current system with insurance agencies negotiating behind closed doors. \nAs many medical students have little understanding on healthcare economics and the history of health insurance\, we introduced to them the origin of employer provided health insurance. Discussion topics included self-insurance and government provided vs. employer-tied. Ten MCW med students came to enjoy milk\, cookies and food for thought! \n

DESCRIPTION:BRI invites you to register for a scheduled tour of the Mercy Virtual Care Center. The care center is the world’s first telemedicine only institute. Telemedicine is one of the future fields of medicine. Telemedicine can potentially solve the rural physician shortage without compromising quality of care. We hope you are just as excited as we are to tour this new facility. \nSpaces are limited to 20 students. We will confirm with the center coordinator the time and date after students register. If the time changes\, we will try to accommodate all students registered. Final details will be sent out to registered students as soon as we confirm. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Katherine Nowak of the Mercy Virtual Care Center gave 16 students at Saint Louis University a tour of facility. The virtual care centre is located in Chesterfield Missouri and open 24 hours\, 365 days a year. Students were excited to see the new frontier of telemedicine and critical care. \nThe tour was excellent. However\, not many physicians are working there\, which is made more noticeable by the size of the facility. Students did enjoy seeing the facility and seeing the applicability of telemedicine.” ~Maggie Wang\, BRI-SLU chapter leader and event organizer \nThe virtual care centre presents a new model of health care for physicians. Doctors work part time at the care centre and at clinic. Students from Saint Louis Medical School saw a new way to manage the physician lifestyle. \nWe hope through this tour that we have broadened perspectives about the future of medical care.

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine|Dublin—VOLUNTEERING EVENT: Volunteering for LifeTown
DESCRIPTION:LifeTown is an educational facility that simulates real-life encounters such as banking\, shopping\, crossing the street\, etc\, for people with mental disabilities. BRI\, in conjunction with students at OUHCOM\, will be volunteering in the various booths to help teach these people how to succeed at life tasks. \nInformation from RSVP form: You need to do a background check via https://chabadcolumbus.volunteerhub.com\, but this can be filled out later once we get more information on this part! Casual dress and no ripped jeans. Each volunteer will be role playing. Look at www.lifetowncolumbus.org to get a small taste of what LifeTown is! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Four medical students were assigned stations in LifeTown. Among the booths we filled\, were the hair/nail/massage salon\, the medical station\, the theater\, and the arts and crafts studio. Participants helped teach students how to count and spend money and encouraged them to use terms such as “please\, thank you\, and excuse me.” \n“My experience at LifeTown goes beyond what I can describe with words. In times of stress\, I find myself going back to that magical moment where I was giving a hand massage and manicure to a loving\, giggling child who admired their blue\, pink\, and purple nails as they told me about how much fun they were having as they learn about how to take care of pets\, ride their bike (as they followed the rules\, of course!) and listened to the doctor. Fulfilling moments like those don’t come unless you seek them and I implore every person I know to spend their morning with some absolutely endearing children at LifeTown and have their outlook on life completely change.” ~ participant Kinza Sheikh\, OMS-II \nThe medical station helped teach young students the importance of hygiene such as washing hands and brushing teeth and eating nutritiously. In the theater\, students could buy pop-corn\, candy\, and tickets and were also taught the importance of timeliness—the movie played at strict times posted on the wall. The art studio encouraged participants to make cards and gifts for their mothers for mother’s day. The salon allowed students to relax and appreciate what it’s like to buy a direct service from another person. It also gave them a sense of pride to spend money on their appearance.

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine @ Mt. Sinai—LECTURE: Physician Burnout and the Physician-Patient Relationship\, Beth Haynes\, MD
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lunch lecture. Food will be provided to those who RSVP within 48 hours of the event. \nPhysician burnout and physician suicide are epidemic. In this lecture we will look at various contributing factors and what can be done. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, medical director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, will be meeting with students of the Stony Brook Medical School campus during lunch to discuss the topic of physician burnout and how it affects the patient-doctor relationship. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes provided a very nice overview of physician burnout\, recent trends in physician burnout epidemiology\, and some of the root causes of burnout. The continued intrusion of government\, insurance companies\, EMRs and other third parties have eroded the physician-patient relationship. Not only does this negatively impact our patients\, but it also exacts a toll on physicians. \nBeth then transitioned to summarizing some of the research into the neurobiology of human relationships\, and how these insights help us understand burnout. To activate neurohormonal axes in the brain\, humans need meaningful social contact\, including eye contact\, emotional connection\, and physical contact. These basic elements that underly the neurobiology of the physician-patient relationship are lacking in today’s overburdened and regulated practice settings. \nNotably\, direct primary care doctors claim that their practices are more fulfilling and inspire them because these physicians can practice medicine the way it should be\, and form meaningful bonds with their patients.

Come find out what you may not know! \nDr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of the Benjamin Rush Institute\, will be meeting with students of the Stony Brook Medical School campus during lunch to discuss the topic: “What Is and Isn’t Insurance\, and Why It Matters to Controlling Healthcare Costs.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty-nine students and faculty attended this lunch lecture. Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of BRI\, gave an hour long presentation over lunch to first year students of the Stony Brook School of Medicine. As our chapter feels not many medical students receive any formal education on the topics of health policy (unless they are in a dual degree program)\, we asked Dr. Haynes to speak about “What is and isn’t health insurance.” \n“Dr. Haynes’s presentation provided a great foundation to understanding the language involved in debating healthcare policy\, and the importance of understanding terms which are used inappropriately (specifically\, “insurance”). By clarifying the nature of insurance as just one mechanism by which healthcare can be financed\, it sowed the seeds of more productive conversation amongst the student body (overheard in the halls and facebook\, long after the presentation had ended).” ~Sean Randazzo\, event coordinator

SUMMARY:A.T. Still University—LECTURE @ Mercer College of Medicine: Netflix vs Blockbuster: A Case Study in Practice Innovation (DPC)
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to attend a lunch lecture by Drs. Pete and Christi Ghaleb. Direct Primary Care is an increasingly popular practice model which focuses on value-based care by offering patients more comprehensive services for a low monthly fee instead of billing insurance. Like a Netflix subscription for medicine\, DPC offers “all you can treat” primary care that is patient-centered\, and eliminates traditional Fee-For-Service billing (Blockbuster). Often for only $50/month for most adults\, patients receive unlimited office visits\, can call/text/email their provider directly\, and get free after-hours visits. In addition\, patients receive discounts on meds\, labs\, and imaging—commonly saving over 90%. Primary care doesn’t have to be expensive\, and DPC shows why. \nThrough this model\, DPC creates unprecedented value and is able to achieve the quadruple aim of: \n(1) higher quality care\,\n(2) lower cost of care\,\n(3) increased access\, and\n(4) greater patient/physician experience. \nThis model is included in the Affordable Care Act\, and is a hot topic in today’s health policy world because of its positive impact on patient care. \nCome sit back and learn about the future of medicine. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP within 48 hours of the event. \nAttendees will asked be asked to participate in a very brief anonymous survey. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Eighteen students and faculty attended this lunchtime presentation event for a study being conducted by Will Craghead on DPC’s ability to influence medical students to enter primary care specialty. Pre- & Post-surveys were collected\, and lunch was provided. \nDr. Pete Ghaleb did an excellent job at presenting on DPC and its value proposition. His presentation was well accepted by students\, and we had a great Q&A session afterwards. All in all\, students were very excited about DPC. Dr. Pete was mentored by Dr. Josh Umbehr of Atlas MD\, and he patterned his practice model after Josh’s. Pete is also helping other docs start DPC clinics. \nOne of the questions from a student was regarding DPC creating a shortage. SUMMARY:Ohio University College of Medicine-Dublin—PRESENTATION: House Calls and the Pre-Penicillin Era to Targeted Chemotherapy: A 75-Year Walk Through Medical History

There is ample parking in front of medical education building one: 6775 Bobcat way\, Dublin\, Ohio 43016 \nDr. Harold Chevlen\, MD\, a 95-year old retired physician who practiced independent family medicine for 50 years in Youngstown\, Ohio\, will be discussing the changes that occurred throughout his career. In particular he’ll describe how things most medical students take for granted\, such as antibiotics revolutionized his practice of medicine. He will also talk about the joys of family medicine. \n  \nHis speech will be followed by his son\, Dr. Eric Chevlen MD\, a medical oncologist in Youngstown\, OH\, who will talk about the innovations that have occurred during his career in cancer care. Dr. Chevlen is the author of Power over Pain: How to Get the Pain Control You Need\, and contributed “Confessions of a Health Care Rationer” to the website\, First Things. \nBoth speeches will describe technological\, scientific\, and social changes to medicine over the past 75 years. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-two students and faculty attended this lecture. Doctors Harold and Eric Chevlen spoke about the changes they encountered\, both within the practice of clinical medicine and within themselves over the course of their careers. \nIn particular\, Dr. Harold Chevlen described starting his own private practice\, serving in the US army as a hospital orderly\, doing house calls throughout Northeastern Ohio\, and the joys of independent family medicine. He talked about the changes in medicine such as the introduction of penicillin\, and sweeping societal changes such as the desegregation of hospitals throughout Ohio. \nDr. Eric Chevlen described his motivations in becoming a physician\, the dramatic improvements in chemotherapy he witnessed over his career\, what it was like practicing oncology for the NIH in rural Egypt\, being the first physician to ever perform a marrow biopsy there\, ethics of DNR orders\, and the introduction of cephalosporins during his schooling. \n“The event went better than I expected! The audience didn’t even look at their phones once. Questions went about 45 minutes beyond the scheduled end of the event. The greatest single argument for independent medical practice is the joy independent doctors exude. Dr. Harold Chevlen painted a beautiful picture of what medicine used to be like–prior to government meddling–where independent family doctors weren’t just clinicians\, but also members of the family. \nI believe that demonstrating how awesome family medicine can be\, unfettered by paper work\, will encourage more people into this underserved field.
