DESCRIPTION:How to Keep Lawyers From Circling Your Practice: A Brief Intro into the Medical-Legal World\nIf you have not yet had the pleasure of listening to Dr. Jeffrey Segal speak\, you are in for a real treat. Combining humorous anecdotes with real-world jurisprudence\, Dr. Segal will give you lasting information about how to protect yourself and your practice as a future physician. \nDr. Jeffrey Segal\, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Medical Justice\, is a board-certified neurosurgeon. Dr. Segal is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; the American College of Legal Medicine; and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a member of the North American Spine Society. In the process of conceiving\, funding\, developing\, and growing Medical Justice\, Dr. Segal has established himself as one of the country’s leading authorities on medical malpractice issues\, counterclaims\, and internet-based assaults on reputation.Dr. Segal was a practicing neurosurgeon for approximately ten years\, during which time he also played an active role as a participant on various state-sanctioned medical review panels designed to decrease the incidence of meritless medical malpractice cases. \nOSUMC students enjoy lunch during Jeff Segal’s medical malpractice presentation.\nDr. Segal holds a M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine\, where he also completed a neurosurgical residency. Dr. Segal served as a Spinal Surgery Fellow at The University of South Florida Medical School. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa as well as the AOA Medical Honor Society. Dr. Segal received his B.A. from the University of Texas and graduated with a J.D. from Concord Law School with highest honors. \nIn 2000\, he co-founded and served as CEO of DarPharma\, Inc\, a biotechnology company in Chapel Hill\, NC\, focused on the discovery and development of first-of-class pharmaceuticals for neuropsychiatric disorders. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: This enlightening event was attended by 150 students and faculty. Besides medical students\, there were several MD/JD students in attendance who asked really great questions and stayed to talk with Dr. Segal for quite a while afterwards about their future career plans. \n“The event went very well! Attendees had time to fill their plates and settle in so that we could introduce Dr. Segal and begin promptly at 12:15. Dr. Segal spoke for about 45 minutes\, and the crowd seemed engaged and enjoying the talk. Students asked great questions afterwards\, and a few stayed to talk more with Dr. Segal. I was very pleased with the turnout\, which was higher than average for BRI events at our school. Jameson collaborates with scientists\, health care providers\, and those living with illness\, sparking conversation that deepens the understanding of illness as a part of being human. \nShe now focuses on how art and design assist in honoring the human experience of illness\, specifically in clinical spaces such as the waiting room. Ms. Jameson’s most recent project\, #FacingMS\, uses art\, storytelling and technology to revolutionize the untapped potential of time spent in waiting rooms. Jameson’s work is shown internationally at major universities\, hospitals\, and neuroscience centers throughout the world. \nDavid E. Jones\, MD\nAssistant Professor of Neurology\, University of Virginia Health System \nDr. David Jones\, MD\, is passionate about his work advocating for multi-disciplinary\, comprehensive care to patients with multiple sclerosis. He currently serves as chair of the MS section of the American Academy of Neurology\, the co-chair of advocacy for Consortium of MS Centers\, a member of the healthcare advisory committee for MSAA and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation\, a member of the board of directors for Can Do MS\, and a member of the National MS Society Task Force for Access to MS Medications. \nA Tampa native\, Dr. Jones graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 2003. He completed his neurology residency at the University of Massachusetts and served as chief resident in the last year of residency. \nDavid L. Lander\nActor | Living with MS since 1984 \nDavid L. Lander is best known for his portrayal of Squiggy in the 1970’s hit television series\, “Laverne and Shirley.” A talented comic writer and actor\, Lander has appeared in the films Who Framed Roger Rabbit\, A League of Their Own\, Used Cars and The Man with One Red Shoe. \nDiagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1984\, David currently maintains a very active schedule as a spokesperson and advocate for MS. In 2000\, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored David with an award for Ambassador of the Year. David’s autobiographical memoir Fall Down Laughing: How Squiggy Caught Multiple Sclerosis and Didn’t Tell Nobody has appeared on the Los Angeles Times best seller list. \nBari Talente\nExecutive Vice President\, Advocacy | National Multiple Sclerosis Society \nCurrently the Society’s Executive Vice President of Advocacy\, Bari Talente previously served as Vice President of State and Local Government Relations. Since joining the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 2004\, Bari has helped people affected by MS discover the power of activism and focused the Society’s advocacy to find solutions and resources for the MS community. Prior to joining the Society\, Bari worked at the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and was selected as a fellow in the New York State Senate Fellowship Program. Bari received a BA in Political Science with a concentration in Public Policy Analysis and Public Administration from Binghamton University and a J.D. with a certificate in State and Local Government from the University at Buffalo School of Law. She is a member of the New York and District of Columbia bars. \n​Stacey L. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join BRI-Marian for a screening of a Star Trek episode\, focusing on healthcare policies. Afterward\,Dr. Jason Eberl\, Semler Endowed Professor of Medical Ethics at MUCOM will join us for a discussion about what we saw. \nPlease RSVP to ensure enough food for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty students and faculty joined us for “Star Trek Bioethics.” After we watched an episode of Star Trek: Voyager – Season 7 – “Critical Care\,” Dr. Eberl (MU-COM’s ethics professor) opened a discussion about the bioethical issue pertaining to the episode. The episode dealt with the topic of government controlled healthcare\, particularly how the need for cost effectiveness and utility of each patient to society limited who got care and who didn’t. \nIt was an interesting discussion of why it is important to have a diverse medical market so that everyone can get the healthcare they want. We learned about the dangers of a federally operated healthcare system and the need for less government influence. We also talked about the social implication of providing healthcare to everyone and how it is not a right but a privilege. \n

SUMMARY:Georgetown University—LECTURE: Direct Primary Care\, Family- and Modern Mobile Medicine
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this presentation by two family practice doctors on Direct Primary Care\, Drs. Marguerite Duane and Matt Haden. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty students and faculty took advantage of this opportunity to explore DPC. Drs. Marguerite Duane and Matt Haden spoke about their direct primary care practice called Modern Mobile Medicine. Their model makes use of the direct primary care model but also incorporates home visits and telemedicine to improve convenience for patients. One of their patients attended the talk with her son and explained how beneficial the practice model was for her. Not only can she access very affordable care around the clock\, but she also is able to have a doctor visit her or her son at home\, minimizing the hassle of visiting a doctor’s office. Modern Mobile Medicine is in its early stages but is expanding rapidly. \n\nHad a great time talking to @Georgetown #medstudents  last week. There was a very large audience\, and they were actively engaged. The speakers were excellent and were able to share their experiences thus far in medicine and how their new practice is embodying what drew them to medicine in the first place. We had a DPC speaker in the fall who was terrific\, but these speakers were just as good. They not only explained the huge benefits of DPC\, but they also touched on why the insurance-based and heavily-regulated traditional model does not make economic sense or provide patients with the best options or prices. The event attracted those interested in both DPC and primary care in general\, so I feel that a wide range of opinions on healthcare policy were represented. Drs. SUMMARY:2017 BRI Leadership Conference in Saint Louis\, MO
DESCRIPTION:Healing Our Healers Through the\nPatient-Doctor Relationship\nDoctors are called upon to treat the sickest of the sick\, often in conditions that demand the most of the strongest human beings. Yet\, even in America with some of the best medical conditions in the world\, doctors are still called upon to serve\, heal\, and respond—over and over again—usually with no thought for their own well-being\, endurance\, or limitations. \nMedical students are also found in similar situations: forced to the brink of their mental\, emotional\, and physical capacity\, to study\, learn and perform on cue . . . and they do this because they want to serve people. \nSo\, how do we take care of our doctors and medical students? Based on the sheer number of healthcare professionals who drop out of school\, out of their practices\, or —worse yet\, out of life itself through suicide—the answer is: not well at all. \nBesides the vast medical knowledge doctors and medical student must learn and retain\, there is the new additional burden of onerous government regulation\, sapping autonomy and joy from the medical profession. We say\, it’s time to heal our healers\, and the best way to do that is to protect one of the most sacred relationships: that of patient and doctor. The BRI-Icahn chapter is pleased to present Dr. Robert Graboyes\, who will be speaking about his fortress and frontiers framework for understanding barriers to innovation in American healthcare. \nThere are few who can illuminate the challenges of innovation in healthcare with such wit and intelligence as Dr. Graboyes. Refreshments will be served. Kindly RSVP to ensure enough food for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Graboyes gave a very interesting talk to 40 students and faculty about his model of the barriers to innovation in medicine. The fortress represents risk averse\, vested interests that resist change\, such as insurance companies\, physicians and hospitals. The frontier is where other sectors of the economy operate\, such as IT. In health care\, Dr. Graboyes argued that we are unwilling to take the risks necessary to move medicine forward at the same rate IT has advanced. \nIn an engaging manner\, Dr. Graboyes walked through several examples of where the frontier in American health care is developing\, defying the trend of most of the field. He spoke passionately about his own experiences as an A fib patient\, and the comfort and savings provided to him by a mobile EKG iPhone case. This allows Dr. Graboyes better control over his own health care decisions\, allows him to save the system money and gives him more information about his health data. \nStudents had a number of questions and follow up for Dr. Graboyes\, a testament to the interesting nature of his talk. \n“The event exceeded expectations. It is a testament to Dr. Graboyes’ talk that many found it so engaging.” ~Hrishi Srinagesh\, BRI-Icahn president and event coordinator \nDr. Robert Graboyes is a Senior Research Fellow and Health Care Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Author of “Fortress and Frontier in American Health Care\,” his work asks\, “How can we make health care as innovative in the next 25 years as information technology was in the past 25?” \nPreviously\, he was health care advisor for the National Federation of Independent Business\, economics professor at the University of Richmond\, regional economist/director of education at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond\, and Sub-Saharan Africa economist for Chase Manhattan Bank. His work has taken him to Europe\, Africa\, and Central Asia. An award-winning teacher\, he holds faculty appointments at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. Previously he taught at George Mason University and the George Washington University. \nHis degrees include a PhD in Economics from Columbia University; master’s from Columbia University\, Virginia Commonwealth University\, and the College of William and Mary; and a bachelor’s from the University of Virginia. He has chaired the National Economists Club\, Richmond Association for Business Economics\, and National Association for Business Economics Healthcare Roundtable. \nHe won the Reason Foundation’s 2014 Bastiat Prize for Journalism\, an international competition for “writing that best demonstrates the importance of individual liberty and free markets with originality\, wit\, and eloquence.” \n

After the event we had a productive conversation about how government programs and philanthropic efforts (such as Tom’s Shoes) may not lead to independence in impoverished peoples\, and we explored possible alternatives and systems such as micro-loans. \n  \n“We had a productive conversation after the event. Many that attended “had no idea” that their good efforts could be perpetuating a system that only deepens a group’s level of poverty and dependence on the first-world. We are America’s only free market healthcare oriented organization specifically for medical students. \nAs a medical student\, what are your concerns about healthcare policy? Didn’t know you should be concerned? This meeting is for you! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-five (mostly M1 and M2) students participated in our first meeting of the year. We held an open-ended discussion about relevant topics in healthcare today\, such as where students see barriers in access to care\, concerns they have with bureaucracy in healthcare\, and past events BRI has held at SLU. We started the meeting with a 5-10 minute powerpoint about BRI\, then divided the room into 3 separate discussion groups. Students were very interested in hearing more about direct primary care (such as Atlas MD/ Josh Umbehr)\, learning how the ACA has changed or increased patients’ out-of-pocket costs\, what can we learn from other national healthcare systems (positives and negatives)\, and what are possible alternatives to the ACA.

All are welcome to join the BRI-GWU chapter on Wednesday 12/7 at lunch to hear Dr. Jesse Pines\, MD\, MBA\, an emergency physician who served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. \nDr. Pines will discuss current healthcare innovations in the context of political and economic limitations\, and how we as future physicians can navigate the changing healthcare landscape to best serve our patients. \nLunch will be provided! Please REGISTER to ensure enough food for all. \nDr. Pines is the Director of the GW Center for Healthcare Innovation and Policy Research in the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine & Health Sciences and a Professor of Health Policy and Management at GW Milken Institute School of Public Health (MISPH). Dr. Pines is the Principal Investigator for Urgent Matters (www.urgentmatters.org)\, a program that disseminates information on best practices in emergency care. Dr. Pines is a board-certified emergency physician practicing at GW Hospital with extensive experience in quality improvement\, patient safety\, operations research\, and clinical epidemiology. Dr. Pines has served as a Senior Advisor at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center\, and a consultant to the National Quality Forum on patient safety and emergency care. He co-authored an Institute of Medicine Report on sustainable models for emergency preparedness funding. \nDr. Pines holds a B.A. in the Biological Basis of Behavior and a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from University of Pennsylvania and an MD and a Masters in Business Administration from Georgetown University. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and a fellowship in research at Penn. Prior to coming to GW in 2010\, Dr. Pines served on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine for 5 ½ years. \n \nDr. Pines has been awarded funding from multiple organizations including the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality\, GW Hospital\, Universal Health Services\, Inc.\, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, the National Institutes of Health\, the Department of Homeland Security\, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\, Emergency Medicine Foundation\, American College of Emergency Physicians\, American Geriatrics Society\, the Institute on Aging\, the Thomas McCabe fund\, the University Research Foundation at Penn\, the National Priorities Partnership on Aging\, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Abbott Point-of-Care. \nHe is author on more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has published several books: Visual Diagnosis in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine (2006\, 2011)\, Evidence-Based Emergency Care: Diagnostic Testing and Clinical Decision Rules (2008\, 2013)\, and Emergency Care and the Public’s Health (2014). His latest book\, Value-Based Approaches in Acute and Emergency Care\, will be published in 2016. He has contributed to TIME magazine\, Slate.com\, Emergency Physicians’ Monthly\, Foreign Policy Magazine\, and the Wall Street Journal. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty medical students packed the meeting room to hear a practitioner perspective on what a Trump presidency could mean for healthcare. Dr. Pines\, an emergency physician with extensive experience and knowledge of health policy\, provided a brief history of health economics and health policy in the United States\, with special attention to the years leading up the passing of the ACA. He then outlined possible scenarios that might take place in the next administration by breaking down each major Republican leader’s priorities for healthcare. \n\n“Now more than ever\, people need to understand health policy and how it is going to impact physicians.” -Katie S.\, MS2 \n\nIn summary\, relentlessly rising healthcare costs without comparable health outcomes led to the ACA. Some goals of the ACA were to expand coverage and to shift towards a value-based payment system with greater accountability for patient outcomes. With the passing of MACRA\, there is a continued focus on merit-based payment for physicians and alternative payment models for hospitals. The ACA has been unpopular among many who see only a rise in cost sharing and overall healthcare spend. \n \nThe new policy agenda includes reforming Medicare and Medicaid\, shifting more to private health insurance coverage and benefits\, reducing healthcare costs\, and changing quality metrics. Dr. Pines thinks it is unlikely that the ACA will be repealed in it’s entirety; whats more likely is that major parts of it will be completely defunded. While the Republican leaders agree on some things\, they don’t agree on everything. Both Price and Ryan have strongly advocated for tax credits\, HSAs\, high risk pools\, and sales across state lines. However\, Ryan supports a continuous coverage requirement\, while Trump and Price do not. Trump and Price also advocate for price transparency. The push for price transparency is growing\, and that has the potential to radically change the healthcare system and the way we practice medicine. As it is\, most physicians don’t know themselves how much things costs and don’t know how to respond to patients when they ask how much something is going to cost. \n“Since the election\, I have truly had no idea what to expect for healthcare other than the overly simplified ‘repeal and replace.’ The lecture gave me a much better sense of what to look for in the coming administration.” -MS1 \nStudents of different political ideologies attended the event\, and there was significant discussion during the Q&A about the choice of Tom Price as health secretary. Some students expressed concern about his priorities\, while others thought him a choice who would represent physicians’ best interests. The lecture prompted numerous questions\, both during the presentation and afterwards. There is a clear understanding that policy will impact future physician practice\, and a strong desire to understand how. \n“Given the fact that it is right before finals and winter break\, I was expecting a much smaller turnout for this event. I was shocked by how many people came – first and second years who were days away from their exams\, third and fourth years who came from their hospital rotations to attend. There were even numerous requests to have the event recorded. There was a clear interest in understanding more about the current policy positions of those about to take leadership and change law. And the event absolutely delivered. This discussion will clearly cover the legal status and language of Physician Assisted Suicide (or Physician Assisted Death\, “PAD”) in the US and internationally\, the future of PAD in the U.S.\, and the ethical considerations brought forth by both sides of the argument. \nThe short HBO Vice episode “Right to Die” (2016) will be shown at the beginning of the hour. \nOSU’s Courtney Thiele\, JD\, MA\, 2015-2016 Clinical Bioethics Fellow\, OSU COM Center for Bioethics & Medical Humanities will lead the discussion. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty (30) students attended. The short HBO Vice episode “Right to Die” (2016) was shown at the beginning of the hour to present the topic and compare domestic & international perspectives on physician assisted suicide. The video discussed the current legal status of PAS\, and there were multiple interviews with many individuals seeking their “right to die.” The video ended by showing a woman in the Netherlands ending her life with physician assistance. \nFollowing the video presentation\, Courtney discussed the difference in terminology surrounding Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS)\, or Physician Aided Dying (PAD)\, the current state of its legality in the US\, Canada and worldwide\, and finally brought forth the ethical considerations. This was followed by stimulating Q&A.

Dr. Scott will speak about her primary care practice\, which uses the direct primary care business model. In this model\, patients pay an initial enrollment fee and then a monthly fee for primary care services.We think you’ll want to know about this non-traditional and expanding method of delivering quality\, affordable care without insurance companies or government middlemen getting between patients and doctors. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-one (31) interested students and members of the UC-Irvine community came to the meeting\, underscoring the great interest and draw this topic has for medical students. Dr. Scott and her husband\, Dr. Gaor\, provided an amazing platform to openly discuss her practice\, story and passion for her patients. \nWe also had the chance to talk about the Primary Care practice modeled as a non-profit\, so that can all patients have access: those who can pay\, those with limited ability to pay\, or those who are uninsured\, or even undocumented or lack ongoing access to quality care.

The opposing side was represented by a Canadian Sackler student Alexey Gurevich\, and Rachel Frenklak\, an American Sackler student who strongly supports socialization of medicine. \n“Given our unique situation being abroad in Israel\, our targeted audience for the event was fellow first year Sackler students\, although we did also pull in a second year student. The Q&A portion had some good questions directed at our side of the panel\, and I think we did a good job of handling the concerns of these fellow classmates. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. \nThe Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine – BRI Chapter will be pairing up with the Catholic Medical Association and Operation Leftover to meet and serve the homeless and impoverished in Indianapolis. We will meet at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church to take canned foods\, warm clothing\, personal hygiene items\, other donations\, and prayer to people in need around downtown Indianapolis. \nALL are welcome and invited to join us in an evening of service. Donations are also appreciated. \nPark in the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 25 volunteers joined in this volunteer event. BRI and the Catholic Medical Association at Marian joined volunteers with Operation Leftover to provide much-needed food\, clothing\, toiletries\, bus passes\, and prayers to the impoverished living on the streets of downtown Indianapolis. Our group came across 15+ people that were in need of help. We gave them any resources we had on us that were donated\, talked with them\, and prayed with them. \n“We have done this in the past\, and it continues to be a very enriching experience. We started with a brief introduction of members and BRI values by Aishat Olanlege. Then Ekene Ohanwusi spoke about the benefits of membership. Our faculty Advisor\, Dr. Adewole then gave a few words of advice and motivation about the possibilities of how we can affect change in Nigerian healthcare. \nWe then had a brainstorming session about our next 6 months plan for BRI and immediate needs for members in equipping us for the work ahead. We also scheduled our next event. Tola Oke the interim secretary took the minutes of the meeting and we also announced elections might begin at the next event. We decided on a paper presentation seminar to equip members on how to write a proper paper for early December. \nWe adjourned the meeting and started a full screening of the Poverty Inc. documentary. \n“It was a first members only event and it was quite promising. Recent drug-pricing scandals—involving EpiPen and Daraprim\, older medicines used to treat asthma and malaria\, respectively\, as well as high list prices for new medicines to counter hepatitis C and cholesterol—seem to offer ammunition to critics who charge that drug manufacturers prioritize profits over patients. \nBut how are drug prices in the U.S. actually determined? DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join BRI-Icahn and Primary Care Progress for this panel discussion presentation on transforming outpatient medicine. We will be hearing from three speakers who will each give a 10-15 minute “TED” style talk about how their practices are transforming outpatient medicine and primary care. \nSPEAKERS: \nFidela Chiang\, NP\, Institute for Family Health | School-based medicine\nRobin Berzin\, MD\, Parsley Health | Concierge practice focusing on individualized medicine \n  \n  \n  \nAndy Coyle\, MD\, Asst. professor of Medicine\, General Internal Medicine\, and Medical Education\, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai | Dr. Coyle focuses on homeless medicine \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Co-sponsored with Primary Care Progress\, twenty (20) students attended this event. Fidela Chiang started us off discussing school-based healthcare in New York. She described how this was a way of capturing young people who may not otherwise receive comprehensive primary care. Particularly for adolescence\, it is a unique opportunity to provide sexual and reproductive health care. \nNext up was Dr. Andy Coyle\, who described the homeless health care practice at Mt. Sinai. Of particular interest was the cost-benefit analysis that showed homeless persons who seek care at the ED constitute a significant cost burden to hospitals\, as well as a suboptimal way of receiving care. He talked about how difficult it is to engage these patients and how their practice can reduce health care costs and provide better care than the traditional large\, bureaucratic system. \nLastly\, Dr. Robin Berzin talked about the direct primary care group practice she created called Parsley Health. They provide concierge health care and were able to design a brand new system from the ground up. This allowed her to truly care for patients without worrying about insurance\, government mandates\, or regulations from large hospital systems. She is able to focus on caring for individual patients holistically and practice precision medicine without these 3rd party constraints. Although the direct model is currently very expensive\, the idea is to design a brand new system that can then be “mass-produced” to the larger public. Working within a flawed system will not yield the necessary results\, so Dr. Berzin created her own system.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this debate concerning the pros and cons of single payer healthcare. \nMODERATOR: Dr. Oscar Marcilla\, MD – Debate Moderator (Associate Director Emergency Medicine at Flushing Hospital Medical Center) \nArguing PRO Single Payer Healthcare: \nLeonard Rodberg\, PhD\, is Professor and Chair of Urban Studies at Queens College/CUNY. He holds a PhD in Physics received from MIT in 1957. Along with his late wife\, Joanne Lukomnik\, he was one of the founders of Physicians for a National Health Program. He began his professional life as a nuclear physicist\, but he has strayed far afield. Dr. Rodberg has served as Director of the Science Policy Office in the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and Resident Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington\, DC and has been involved in the struggle for health care reform since 1974\, when he led the development of the Dellums Health Service Act. He has served on the Board of the NY Metro Chapter of PNHP for a number of years and is Treasurer and Research Director of the Chapter. He also created and directs the Infoshare Community Data web site (www.infoshare.org). \nElizabeth Rosenthal\, MD recently retired from her Mamaroneck practice of dermatology after 35 years.  She continues on the clinical faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  For the past 5 years she has been an active Board member of the NY Metro chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. Speaking and writing on health care reform for the past several years\, she is a passionate advocate of an expanded and improved “Medicare for All.” She is a graduate of Smith College and NYU Medical School and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology. She lives in Larchmont with her physician husband\, and they are the parents of three  grown sons. \n  \nArguing AGAINST Single Payer Healthcare:\nSameer Lakha\, MD\, PGY-2 Anesthesiology\, Mt. SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—DEBATE: Does the Affordable Care Act Help or Hurt Patients?
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine-BRI chapter’s first debate of the 2016-17 academic year. We are looking forward to a great year of events\, and this should start us off by sparking some well-deserved\, collegiate and amicable debate on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Refreshments will be served. Please use the green Register button so that we can be sure to have enough refreshments for all. \nBE IT RESOLVED: Less government intervention in healthcare is better for patients.\n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: One hundred students\, faculty and interested people from the community\, including Lucy Brenton\, Indiana US Senator Candidate for the Libertarian Party\, attended the MUCOM Affordable Care Act (ACA) evening debate between proponents and opponents of government-run healthcare\, co-sponsored with Marian University’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA)\, and American Medical Student Association (AMSA). \nAt 5pm we held a reception for the audience to mingle with the debaters. Upon opening the debate at 6pm we presented the debate Resolution: \nShould the government be more or less involved in the provision of healthcare? \n\nThe pre-debate audience poll revealed:\n33% = government more involved\,\n54% = government less involved\, and\n13% were undecided.\n\n \n“The debate turned out great! 85 people RSVP’d to the event\, and even more ended up attending the event.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-MUCOM founder and president \nThe debaters all spoke with passion and a profound knowledge on the topics involved. Each debater was asked five questions with two minutes to respond to each question\, followed by one minute to rebut any responses. \n\nThe questions were:\nWhat\, if any\, limitations are placed on patients and physicians due to the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?\nMany individuals complain about the mandate to carry health insurance\, even though they qualify for cheaper ACA plans. What political\, social\, or economic values are coming into conflict here?\nWhat changes would you make to the ACA\, or what alternative system would you propose?\nWhat would be the benefits or potential weaknesses of these changes of the new system you’d propose?\nWith the presidential election coming up in less than two weeks\, is there a candidate that you believe has a better healthcare plan than the other candidates? (Hilary Clinton\, Donald Trump\, Gary Johnson\, Jill Stein).\n\nDr. Von Fange and Dr. Haynes answered the questions from a free market perspective. Dr. Gaffney and Dr. Stone advocated for more of a national single payer system. Both sides had problems with the Affordable Care Act. \n\nAfter the five questions were asked\, the resolution was polled again with the following results:\n38% = government more involved\, (+4)\n62% = government less involved (+8)\nNo one (0%) remained undecided.\n\nThis was a decisive victory for the free market side of healthcare. The debate was then opened up for questions from the audience. More passionate discussion ensued until the debate ended at 8pm. \nAdditional notes: We held a pre-event meal with 80+ students for Indiana University School of Medicine\, Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine\, local physicians\, and members of the Libertarian Party. \n“The event exceeded expectations. One thing that really stood out from this debate compared to others I have attended\, was the crowd involvement with live polling data to questions. The crowd seemed very interested in the debate as well. We will conduct a modified Oxford-style debate format with time for Q&A at the end. \nIn the affirmative:\nDr. Timothy Von Fange\, Sports Medicine Physician at St. Vincent. Dr. Von Fange is a sports medicine physician and currently serves as the team physician for the Marian University Knights and Indianapolis Scecina Memorial Crusaders. As an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)\, he serves on educational committees dedicated to enhancing sports medicine learning for both residents and fellows. His professional interests include concussion evaluation and management\, acute and chronic soft tissue injury\, musculoskeletal ultrasound\, and health care policy. Dr. Von Fange is a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Moses Cone Health System in Greensboro\, North Carolina. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of BRI \nPreviously in private practice with board certification in both Family Practice and Emergency Medicine\, Dr. Beth Haynes has been working full time in healthcare policy for the past six years. She obtained her MD from the University of Cincinnati\, College of Medicine and her residency training at University of Wisconsin in Madison. She also volunteers as an executive board member of the Dr. Joseph Warren Instituteand is Founder and President of The Black Ribbon Project. She previously served as Senior Health Policy Analyst and Executive Board Member for Docs4PatientCare\, and as National Co-Chair of Doc Squads\, a project to recruit and train doctors to lead the public healthcare debate. Dr. Haynes has published several op-eds in TownHall.com\, PJ Media\, American Thinker and The Huffington Post. She speaks frequently to citizen and professional groups on healthcare policy\, the ACA\, and the ethics and economics of medicine. \nIn opposition:\nDr. Margaret Gaffney\, practicing dermatologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine\, Indiana University. Dr. Gaffney obtained a BA in English from Indiana University\, Bloomington\, and graduated from the IU School of Medicine. After an internship at Riley Hospital for Children\, she completed a residency in dermatology\, also at IU. Dr. Gaffney is a practicing dermatologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. She is the director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course and of the Moral Reasoning and Ethical Judgment competency in the revised curriculum of the Indiana University School of Medicine. She chairs the Wishard Ethics Committee\, serves on the Clarian and Riley Hospital ethics committees\, and collaborates on the Indiana University Conscience Project. From 1995-2003\, she was director of the Indiana Healthcare Ethics Network. \nDr. Robert Stone\, Director and Founder of Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan (HCHP.info) and the State Coordinator in Indiana for Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP.org). \nDr. Rob Stone is the director and founder of Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan (hchp.info) and the state coordinator in Indiana for Physicians for a National Health Program. Since 2009 he has been a member of PNHP’s board of directors. Dr. Stone practiced emergency medicine at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital from 1983 to 2011. He currently serves as the medical director of palliative care at the hospital. Dr. Stone has been a national leader in the movement to divest from for-profit health insurance and is the national coordinator for the Divestment Campaign for Healthcare (HealthCareNotWealthCare.US). He lectures to medical and lay audiences on health care reform throughout Indiana and beyond\, and has received several statewide and national awards for his advocacy work. SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Understanding Health Insurance: The Key to Healthcare Access and Affordability
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture by Benjamin Rush Institute executive director\, Dr. Beth Haynes. Dr. Haynes will explain the differences between health insurance and actual access to healthcare\, and how understanding this is key to understanding the current problems of healthcare access and affordability. \nWe will be serving lunch food. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes spoke on health insurance and how health insurance in its current form is not really insurance. She explained how health insurance prices are set\, and why premiums keep getting higher and higher. Rising premiums are causing younger people to not see health insurance as financially feasible\, leading to more people utilizing Medicaid as their “health insurance.” The loss of underwriting in health insurance policies is a big problem\, along with risk-pooling. It has created a death spiral similar to what Ludwig von Mises talks about when government gets involved in industries it has no business being in. \nDr. Haynes gave an example of how expensive health insurance is from David Goldhill’s book\, Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know About Healthcare is Wrong. An example is someone in her mid 20’s who is making $35k annually\, and how when it is all said and done about $10k goes to paying for just her health insurance. Over the course of her life\, about 2/3rds of her income goes to health insurance alone. Dr. Haynes compared health insurance to auto\, home\, and life insurance\, and talked about how these other types of insurance are different than most health insurance plans. \nAfter Dr. Haynes talk\, the eleven students that attended ended up asking questions and having a discussion for another 45 minutes or so. We talked about solutions to fix this problem\, along with other problems that need to be addressed and ways to focus on allowing innovation in health care and health insurance.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama @ Birmingham—LECTURE: Private Practice: A How-To Guide
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome and encouraged to attend this talk with Dr. Matthew Davis\, an orthopedic surgeon who runs a price-transparent private practice in Birmingham\, Alabama. Dr. Davis is affiliated with St. Vincent’s Birmingham and received his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Davis has been in practice for 16 years and will deliver remarks about his journey as a medical doctor in private practice. \nDr. Davis loves what he does every day\, because it allows him to be hands-on\, solve problems\, and build great relationships with his patients. He enjoys being able to give patients answers\, resolve their ailments\, and put them on a track toward comfort and mobility. He has 10 years of experience working as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon\, helping people by doing everything from ACL repairs to managing osteoarthritis. \nCome find out about Dr. Davis’s reflections on the changing nature of medical care delivery and how his system has been phenomenally successful for both himself and for his patients. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-six (36) students attended the presentation. President Thompson Foy opened the meeting\, thanked everyone for being in attendance\, and provided a brief review of our previous event (screening of a talk delivered by Juliette Madrigal-Dersch). He then introduced our speaker\, Dr. Matt Davis. For about 40 minutes\, Dr. Davis described the difficulties that face physicians in the traditional\, third-party payer healthcare setting. He contrasted this cumbersome model with his own practice\, in which 95% pay with cash out-of-pocket. Finally\, he spent a bit of time discussing the advantages afforded by capitalist\, free market systems. The talk was well-received\, and there were several questions from interested attendees at the end. President Thompson Foy concluded the meeting with a solicitation for membership.

SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine—LECTURE: What the Election Holds for Health Policy and Reform
DESCRIPTION:All are cordially invited to join us for a lunch lecture with Keith Fontenot\, Nonresident Fellow – Economic Studies\, The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. Mr. Fontenot will be at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences to discuss the future of healthcare reform. Mr. Fontenot has unparalleled insight into the development of the Affordable Care Act in the Obama Administration given his previous role as associate director for Health at the Office of Management and Budget. He will speak to future directions of healthcare policy through an economic lens\, considering the possible outcomes with the election of either candidate. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended Mr. Fontenot’s lecture. Keith Fontenot\, a non-resident fellow of Economic Studies at Brookings Institution\, came to George Washington University School of Health Sciences to discuss the current state of the Affordable Care Act and likely first moves in health policy for an elected president. In a thought-provoking and inspiring lunch discussion\, he sat down with first and second year medical students to discuss what to watch for after the election and how medical students can stay engaged as physicians in healthcare policy. \n \nIn his talk\, Fontenot proposed different scenarios for a Clinton versus Trump presidency. In the event of a Clinton presidency\, he believes it unlikely that healthcare legislative reform will be a priority. More likely will be changes to the administrative management of the ACA’s execution. He suggested that this is where we can expect the greatest changes\, and prioritization of specific agendas will be seen in modification to the “administrative dials.” \nIn the event of a Trump presidency\, Fontenot doesn’t think a complete legislative repeal is likely. He doesn’t envision a scenario where millions of newly insured lose their insurance. Instead\, he suggested that the punishment for non-adherence to the various components of the law will be minimized\, and the general commitment to the law will thus be reduced. \nFontenot fielded numerous student questions on the subject of healthcare economics. While discussing different models of payment and care\, he emphasized the idea that “if you’ve seen one market\, you’ve seen one market.” Markets across the country are very different\, and even within states\, there are huge variations in what works and what doesn’t. Given this reality\, it is difficult to compare healthcare models and support a one size fits all option. \nThe most important thing for medical students\, Fontenot said\, is to stay engaged. Medical students must read the news and understand what is going on in healthcare policy. Healthcare policy changes have huge implications for how physicians will be reimbursed in the future\, and future physicians must stay engaged to understand how these changes will impact them and how they can have a voice in the dialogue. \n“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect for this event\, but I was very pleased with how many people came. The students were incredibly engaged and asked many questions throughout the presentation. What does this mean for health policy? Will the Affordable Care Act remain intact?
