SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Understanding Health Insurance: The Key to Healthcare Access and Affordability
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend this lecture by Benjamin Rush Institute executive director\, Dr. Beth Haynes. Dr. Haynes will explain the differences between health insurance and actual access to healthcare\, and how understanding this is key to understanding the current problems of healthcare access and affordability. \nWe will be serving lunch food. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Haynes spoke on health insurance and how health insurance in its current form is not really insurance. She explained how health insurance prices are set\, and why premiums keep getting higher and higher. Rising premiums are causing younger people to not see health insurance as financially feasible\, leading to more people utilizing Medicaid as their “health insurance.” The loss of underwriting in health insurance policies is a big problem\, along with risk-pooling. It has created a death spiral similar to what Ludwig von Mises talks about when government gets involved in industries it has no business being in. \nDr. Haynes gave an example of how expensive health insurance is from David Goldhill’s book\, Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know About Healthcare is Wrong. An example is someone in her mid 20’s who is making $35k annually\, and how when it is all said and done about $10k goes to paying for just her health insurance. Over the course of her life\, about 2/3rds of her income goes to health insurance alone. Dr. Haynes compared health insurance to auto\, home\, and life insurance\, and talked about how these other types of insurance are different than most health insurance plans. \nAfter Dr. Haynes talk\, the eleven students that attended ended up asking questions and having a discussion for another 45 minutes or so. We talked about solutions to fix this problem\, along with other problems that need to be addressed and ways to focus on allowing innovation in health care and health insurance.

SUMMARY:University of Alabama @ Birmingham—LECTURE: Private Practice: A How-To Guide
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome and encouraged to attend this talk with Dr. Matthew Davis\, an orthopedic surgeon who runs a price-transparent private practice in Birmingham\, Alabama. Dr. Davis is affiliated with St. Vincent’s Birmingham and received his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Davis has been in practice for 16 years and will deliver remarks about his journey as a medical doctor in private practice. \nDr. Davis loves what he does every day\, because it allows him to be hands-on\, solve problems\, and build great relationships with his patients. He enjoys being able to give patients answers\, resolve their ailments\, and put them on a track toward comfort and mobility. He has 10 years of experience working as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon\, helping people by doing everything from ACL repairs to managing osteoarthritis. \nCome find out about Dr. Davis’s reflections on the changing nature of medical care delivery and how his system has been phenomenally successful for both himself and for his patients. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-six (36) students attended the presentation. President Thompson Foy opened the meeting\, thanked everyone for being in attendance\, and provided a brief review of our previous event (screening of a talk delivered by Juliette Madrigal-Dersch). He then introduced our speaker\, Dr. Matt Davis. For about 40 minutes\, Dr. Davis described the difficulties that face physicians in the traditional\, third-party payer healthcare setting. He contrasted this cumbersome model with his own practice\, in which 95% pay with cash out-of-pocket. Finally\, he spent a bit of time discussing the advantages afforded by capitalist\, free market systems. The talk was well-received\, and there were several questions from interested attendees at the end. President Thompson Foy concluded the meeting with a solicitation for membership.

SUMMARY:George Washington University School of Medicine—LECTURE: What the Election Holds for Health Policy and Reform
DESCRIPTION:All are cordially invited to join us for a lunch lecture with Keith Fontenot\, Nonresident Fellow – Economic Studies\, The Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. Mr. Fontenot will be at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences to discuss the future of healthcare reform. Mr. Fontenot has unparalleled insight into the development of the Affordable Care Act in the Obama Administration given his previous role as associate director for Health at the Office of Management and Budget. He will speak to future directions of healthcare policy through an economic lens\, considering the possible outcomes with the election of either candidate. \nRefreshments will be served. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students and faculty attended Mr. Fontenot’s lecture. Keith Fontenot\, a non-resident fellow of Economic Studies at Brookings Institution\, came to George Washington University School of Health Sciences to discuss the current state of the Affordable Care Act and likely first moves in health policy for an elected president. In a thought-provoking and inspiring lunch discussion\, he sat down with first and second year medical students to discuss what to watch for after the election and how medical students can stay engaged as physicians in healthcare policy. \n \nIn his talk\, Fontenot proposed different scenarios for a Clinton versus Trump presidency. In the event of a Clinton presidency\, he believes it unlikely that healthcare legislative reform will be a priority. More likely will be changes to the administrative management of the ACA’s execution. He suggested that this is where we can expect the greatest changes\, and prioritization of specific agendas will be seen in modification to the “administrative dials.” \nIn the event of a Trump presidency\, Fontenot doesn’t think a complete legislative repeal is likely. He doesn’t envision a scenario where millions of newly insured lose their insurance. Instead\, he suggested that the punishment for non-adherence to the various components of the law will be minimized\, and the general commitment to the law will thus be reduced. \nFontenot fielded numerous student questions on the subject of healthcare economics. While discussing different models of payment and care\, he emphasized the idea that “if you’ve seen one market\, you’ve seen one market.” Markets across the country are very different\, and even within states\, there are huge variations in what works and what doesn’t. Given this reality\, it is difficult to compare healthcare models and support a one size fits all option. \nThe most important thing for medical students\, Fontenot said\, is to stay engaged. Medical students must read the news and understand what is going on in healthcare policy. Healthcare policy changes have huge implications for how physicians will be reimbursed in the future\, and future physicians must stay engaged to understand how these changes will impact them and how they can have a voice in the dialogue. \n“I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect for this event\, but I was very pleased with how many people came. The students were incredibly engaged and asked many questions throughout the presentation. SUMMARY:University of California Medical School at San Diego—LECTURE: Health Policy with CA Assemblyman Brian Maienschein
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend BRI-UCSD chapter’s lecture on healthcare policy by someone who has been intimately involved in this area. Refreshments will be served. \nCalifornia Assembly member Brian Maienschein\, representing Assembly District 77 of northern San Diego County\, will be speaking to the legislative process as it relates to healthcare policy and the role that med students can play. He will also touch on what he has seen during his time as Vice Chair of the Assembly Health Committee and how it has shaped his viewpoint as to what “good” healthcare policy looks like—and why more isn’t necessarily better. \nTo read more about Asm. Maienschein\, please click here. \n  \n \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty-five (45) students attended a talk by Assemblymember Brian Maienschein\, who represents District 77 of northern San Diego County in the California State Assembly\, and currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Assembly Health Committee. Prior to his election to the Assembly\, he served as a San Diego City Council Member and as the city’s Commissioner on Homelessness. Asm Maienschein has been a strong advocate for patients and physicians in the Assembly\, and is one of the most influential members of the Assembly on health-related issues. \nAt the event\, Asm Maienschein spoke on his experiences both before and after he was elected to the state legislature\, including Project 25 (a SD pilot program to address the 25 most expensive individuals to the city)\, attempts by mid-level providers to push for scope-of-practice expansions via the state legislature\, and more. \nAsm Maienschein also touched on how medical students can get involved to influence health policy via their local county medical societies. \nBrian Maienschein was an engaging speaker and very knowledgeable on the goings-on in the state legislature related to healthcare. He has spoken to young audiences and students many times before\, and did a good job of handling questions that may not have aligned closely with his own views. \n

DESCRIPTION:Students from BRI-OUHCOM|Dublin will volunteer as part of the medical team for the Columbus Marathon. \nBRI OUHCOM medical marathon \nWith 18\,000 runners and walkers it will be one of the largest marathons in the country! \nThe BRI-OUHCOM|Dublin chapter leadership is currently looking for medical and support volunteers to assist with medical coverage for the race. With a race this size we will have a lot of volunteer needs: \nFinish Line Crew\nMedical Tent Coverage\nRace Course Medical Coverage\n… and more!\nEven if you don’t consider yourself a “medical” person that is OK\, when can still use you! \nWhat to Expect – Medical volunteers will be positioned at the start/finish line medical area as well as medical tents along the course. We will see a variety of things from a sore shins and knees to someone who collapses at the finish line needing extra assistance. We have a lot of physicians\, nurses\, ATCs\, PTs\, and EMTs on our team. If you don’t consider yourself “medical” we will pair you with a “medical” volunteer to make sure you aren’t put in an uncomfortable situation. \nThe race is Sunday\, October 16th. We will need to meet around 7:00am and will be done no later than 2:00pm. If you can only make it for part of the race that is OK – we still need you! \nIf you are interested please use the green Register button to sign-up. Please include a cell phone number you will have with you on race day. We will use this as a back-up to our emergency communication system. Please make sure you have your cell phone with you on race day. Once you sign up\, your volunteer captain will be in touch regarding parking details. With volunteers needed across all 26.2 miles of the race\, the best parking options will vary depending on where you will be helping. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Three BRI members from OUHCOM volunteered for 7 hours at the Nationwide Children’s Columbus Marathon. Each student helped assist the medical teams on the course and at the finish line medical tent.

A dozen people met in a room with the hope of building a robust network of state think tanks throughout the country. Today\, the SPN Annual Meeting brings together over 900 people from around the country\, including state and national leaders\, influencers\, and professionals. \nWe believe that being good enough is not enough to win in the rapidly evolving political environment. We can’t afford to be outgunned\, outmanned and outspent. The future of the country depends on it. \nThat is why the State Policy Network has hosted the Annual Meeting for 23 years running. \nThis year\, the Annual Meeting is returning to the state where it all started. Freedom fighters will gather in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, with an intentional focus on developing the solutions and skills to advance freedom at both the state and national level. You can watch a short intro video to Freedom Healthworks here. \nAdam Habig is a native of central Indiana with thirteen years of experience innovating within the realm of health care delivery. In 2003\, Mr. Habig co-founded the biosciences technology firm ISPRIT Systems\, which pioneered the use of a sophisticated information technology platform to better diagnose and manage complex chronic illness\, ultimately ascending to the role of Chief Executive Officer of the firm. ISPRIT anticipated the elevation of chronic disease prevention and management as a chief cost control\, ultimately attracting the attention of some of the world’s leading companies within the health insurance and diagnostics fields. \nIn 2013\, observing the rapid changes pervading healthcare delivery\, Mr. Habig co-founded Freedom Healthworks to unleash the innovative potential of direct primary care on a broad scale. He talked about DPC and what it offered doctors and patients. He had two cutouts showing all the regulations in the US Healthcare System\, along with a table of the top 20 concerns of physicians for 2016. DPC gets rid of most of those regulations in the current healthcare system\, along with most of the concerns for 2016 physicians. He spoke on how his parents (both physicians) were considering retirement in the prime of their medical careers. They were burned out with not being able to practice medicine the way they wanted too. Adam and his brother Chris decided to focus their time on creating Freedom Healthworks. Their company focuses on transitioning doctors of all ages into DPC practices. They have come up with a template for doctors allowing them to reduce some of the main challenges to starting up a DPC clinic: finding patients\, business decisions\, administrative work. DESCRIPTION:Jules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD at OUHCOM\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-four students attended Dr. Madrigal’s presentation. She talked about her cash based practice in Texas\, where basic health needs are handled in a direct patient-doctor relationship\, and health insurance is used for what it was originally intended: catastrophic events. When a doctor and patients are in charge of costs and treatments\, the doctor is empowered to negotiate with lab companies\, imaging companies\, and pharmaceutical companies and other healthcare service providers to keep patient costs down. Dr. Madrigal described how her model of direct primary care works for all of her patients: the really sick\, the really healthy\, the rich\, the poor\, and the middle class.  Dr. Madrigal has removed government interference\, over-regulation\, and red tape out of the picture to keeps costs down\, care quality high\, patients happy and physicians happy. \n“Dr. Madrigal’s talk was very informative. I came to medical school to become a Primary Care Physician\, but have recently been discouraged. She re-lit the fire in me to pursue this dream and showed me that it is possible to to be a PCP without having to deal with the ACA. The presentation Dr. Madrigal gave was exactly what we had in mind. In spite of some technical difficulties\, these issues did not really take away from the message we were trying convey. \nMost people were receptive to the ideas and especially because she made her lifestyle seem very appealing and her patient population so grateful and well served. Most of the audience had good questions and seemed to benefit greatly from seeing Dr. Madrigal’s perspective. She was receptive to answering many of their questions afterwards.

DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend BRI-UABSOM chapter’s free lecture screening on free market healthcare policy: \nJules Madrigal-Dersch\, MD on free market healthcare policy\nWhy BRI supports a free market approach to healthcare policy\, featuring Jules Madrigal-Dersch.\nIn March 2016\, BRI board member and med-peds doctor Juliette Madrigal-Dersch\, MD\, spoke to BRI student leaders at our annual leadership conference about her joy in running an independent cash practice in rural Texas\, and why free market healthcare policies make sense. \nAt this meeting\, our hope is to educate potential members about BRI’s mission in support of free market healthcare solutions\, and to encourage BRI-UABSOM chapter involvement and membership. \nWe will provide light refreshments and snacks encouraging guests to bring their own lunch. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The BRI-UAB chapter screened a pre-recorded presentation delivered by Dr. Jules Madrigal-Dersch at the 2015-2016 BRI Leadership Conference held at American Enterprise Institute in March 2016. Dr. Madrigal-Dersch spoke about why she chose to deliver market-based care rather than follow the existing insurance-based care model. \nThe event opened with a welcome to the attendees from UAB BRI officers\, and quickly proceeded to the lecture screening. The lecture was part explanatory and part testimonial as to how and why Dr. Madrigal-Dersch chose to enter into the direct primary care model\, and the benefits the model provides to herself\, her family\, and her patients. \nAfter the screening\, the floor was opened up for questions. Seeing none\, Thompson Foy\, UAB-BRI president\, proceeded to inform the attendees about the next UAB BRI meeting on October 26th\, 2016\, and closed the meeting. \n“We hoped to have more attendees\, but we believe that the people who did come found the event both informative and enjoyable. We held the event in the student hostel after adequate announcements and pasting posters at locations to inform people ahead about the event. The program started at 10am\, with Aishat Olanlege\, Ekene Ohanwusi\, and Zainab Odufuye welcoming interested attendees; materials and candy were set out. A total of 40 people signed up and promised to pay on or before the deadline of 23rd October\, 2016 a modified fee of 5000 naira. The program ended at 12 noon and Omotola Oke and Ojiaka Ogonna were assigned as interim secretary and treasurer.

This was particularly true of older students who have seen the echo chamber that has been created at Mt. Sinai. BRI has been a presence for powerful discussions in medicine and healthcare for four years\, with events like debates and our monthly Journal Club. We want to meet you and tell you how being involved with BRI helps promote healthcare freedom and preserve the doctor-patient relationship. \nBRI-MCW’s 2016-17 inaugural meet ‘n greet “Milk & Cookies” event\nBRI-MCW has held successful events for four years in a row. Most start with their traditional “Milk & Cookies Meet ‘n Greet.”\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-five (35) students attended our 2016-17 BRI kick off recruitment event at MCW. It was a welcome for the first year medical students and a chance to let them know what BRI stands for and the various initiatives we have throughout the year.

Instead\, you attend his funeral–yet another medical student suicide victim.And statistics show no improvement even when a medical student becomes a doctor.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccording to Ashley Maltz\, MD and Pamela Wible\, MD:\n\n\n“Medical student and physician suicide is an epidemic. It is estimated that 400 doctors die by suicide in the United States each year. That’s the equivalent of an entire medical school gone! The second leading cause of death among medical students is suicide–a well-known occupational hazard in medicine. Yet no medical organization is tracking these suicides. Why? DESCRIPTION:Dr. Thomas S. Huddle\nYou are cordially invited to join BRI-UAB chapter officers and faculty advisor for an informal talk about Benjamin Rush Institute’s purposes and goals\, to learn how we seek to grow this BRI chapter\, and what we intend to accomplish this coming academic year by way of educational\, fun and informative events. This meeting is especially geared towards MS1 and MS2 students looking for a like-minded group to be involved in\, and all are welcome. Faculty advisor Dr. Thomas Huddle will provide remarks on the current trajectory and future of healthcare in the United States. \nPizza and refreshments will be served. \nAbout Dr. Thomas S. Huddle:\nDr. Huddle completed undergraduate\, graduate and medical school work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, where he completed an MD PhD (history of medicine). He then did internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison WI and went on to complete a general medicine fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania (Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program). \nDr. Huddle pursues conceptual research/scholarship in the history of medicine\, medical ethics\, medical professionalism and medical education. \nJosh Blackwell\, VP UAB-BRI; Thompson Foy\, President UAB-BRI in background\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-four (34) interested UAB students attended BRI’s inaugural chapter information meeting. The event began with several speeches by the chartering officers of UABSOM BRI. Chapter founder and president Thompson Foy began by introducing the other officers and the faculty advisor\, Dr. Thomas Huddle. He described the benefits of BRI and distributed informational fliers about the organization. After a brief autobiography and testimonial as to his interests and undertakings outside of medicine\, including economics and politics\, he passed the microphone to the other officers. \nJoshua Blackwell (vice president) and Andres Arcinegas (treasurer) introduced themselves and \nUAB students listen to Prof. Thomas Huddle at UAB-BRI’s inaugural event.\nprovided their own takes on why BRI is important and what caused them to take on a leadership role in the organization. A common theme in their speeches was their desire to improve our current healthcare system by seeking alternative ways to deliver services and care. \nDr. Huddle then provided his own background\, and spoke to the importance of vigorous intellectual debate in medical school on topics of policy and business so that medical students can be exposed to all sides of some of the most important issues of our time. \nUAB-BRI president Thompson Foy wrapped up by taking questions from the audience and directing them to the BRI website for self-study. He then talked about future events\, encouraged future attendance\, and concluded the meeting.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director delivered a talk at the 2016 ATLAS Summit @ Freedom Fest\, What About the Poor? How to Win the Debate Without Selling Your Soul. \nIn order to engage those who are skeptical but potentially persuadable to free market ideas\, we need to answer concerns about what happens to society’s most disadvantaged in a powerful\, truthful and compelling way. This is a major concern of young people\, who frequently have a strong desire to help others\, but who are typically economically ignorant and think with their hearts. In order to reach them we need to address their concerns without compromising on our fundamental principles. Come learn what tactics are working with students and are applicable to a much broader audience.
