SUMMARY:Ohio University HCOM - Lecture: Profits in Medicine: A Superior Model\, by Dr. Beth Haynes
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute\, will present a lecture on why medicine and healthcare are delivered optimally in a profit-based system\, rather than in a government-\, or even non-profit system. Free market medicine is better for doctors\, patients\, and the poor. We invite you to come and listen to Dr. Haynes\, especially if this viewpoint is unfamiliar to you or counter to your current views. \nNote: This event occurs in the Eastern Time Zone.\nPlease RSVP so that we can provide enough refreshments for all! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nDr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute came to speak to students at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her lecture was entitled “The Merits of Profit in Medicine.” She used many examples to demonstrate that medicine is best without government restraints\, and when profit drives the system. \nAfter the lecture\, many excellent questions were asked\, and physicians from the community discussed their systems. This was an excellent event that turned out a high attendance even though many other events were occurring that night. The only suggestion was that some students voiced wanting to see more statistical data and studies to back up claims.

SUMMARY:Ohio State University - Lecture: The Ethics of Profit in Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute\, will present a lecture on why medicine and healthcare are delivered optimally in a profit-based system\, rather than in a government-\, or even non-profit system. Free market medicine is better for doctors\, patients\, and the poor. We invite you to come and listen to Dr. Haynes\, especially if this viewpoint is unfamiliar to you or counter to your current views. \nNote: This event occurs in the Eastern Time Zone. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Thirty-five OSU students and faculty from across the political spectrum gathered at lunch time for a thought-provoking talk on the role of profits in medicine by Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of BRI. In her talk\, Dr. Haynes began by providing data on how the economic freedom of a country correlates positively with health outcomes such as life expectancy. She then spoke about how government regulation of industry is correlated with high prices and poor quality. She gave the examples of healthcare and education as two highly regulated industries that have been problematic for the U.S. for several decades. Conversely\, industries free of intervention such as high-tech have more competition and thus lower costs with higher quality. \nIn order to lend evidence to her point that markets provide optimal benefit to consumers\, Dr. Haynes gave examples of doctors from around the country who’ve found ways to provide services for cash. Her examples showed that unfettered markets in healthcare have already succeeded in improving patient care and physician satisfaction while decreasing cost. \nOverall\, the event was very well received by the students\, as evidenced by a lengthy Q&A period following the talk.

SUMMARY:University of Toledo — Debate: The Merits of Profit-Based Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 29th\, Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute will discuss why medicine and healthcare delivery are better in a profit-based system rather than in a government\, or even a non-profit system. Come and join our discussion! \nThis event is at noon Eastern time\, and lunch will be served. Please RSVP so that we can ensure enough for all. Parking is available at the HEB/Visitor Parking Lot. \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: Twenty-three people attended the healthcare systems debate held at UTCOM\, which was inspired by Dr. Haynes’ midwest trip where she traveled to several universities explaining the importance of profit in a healthcare system. We designed this event as a debate\, as debates tend to draw more interest and participants. We thank Dr. Johnathon Ross\, past president of PHNP for joining us. \nDr. Ross is a proponent of a national healthcare plan that would reach the needs of all citizens independent of status. The debate was held in a traditional format with Dr. Haynes given 10 minutes to voice her opinion\, followed by a 3-minute rebuttal from Dr. Ross. Dr. Ross was then given 10 minutes for a defense and Dr. Haynes followed with a 3-minute rebuttal. At the end\, the floor was opened up for questions from the audience. \nSeveral students approached the event coordinators right after the event and even later on in the day to say how much they enjoyed the debate. Having a debate format was something the students were not used to in our academic setting; usually presentations are done by a solo speaker with one point they are trying to get across. Whereas a solo presenter format is educational\, having two sides of a story right in front of you definitely had a higher impact on the audience. \nOverall the event was a success. Although one hour is hardly sufficient to really delve into the complexities of the topic\, the students in attendance enjoyed the debate format and came away forming opinions of their own\, which was the whole intent of the event.

SUMMARY:George Washington University — Lecture: Medicine's New Frontier: Free Market Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Keith Smith is a pioneer in free market medicine. The things he and his coworkers have accomplished are an example of how price transparency and free market principles can lead to affordable\, high quality healthcare. \nEveryone is welcome to attend. RSVP is required for this event. This is especially important for non-GW affiliated guests as I will need to get your name on the list at the front security desk. Please bring a photo ID. \nRefreshments will be served. \nNOTE: This event take place Eastern Time. \nPARKING: Best method is to take the metro to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station on the blue/orange line. For those who prefer to drive\, there is limited\, free 2-hour parking east of the building. Or there is metered parking in the surrounding area. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: \nDr. Keith Smith gave a very provocative lecture that challenged the way a lot of the people in attendance have been taught about the true cost of providing health care. Dr. Smith was especially a big hit with students who are members of our school’s Entrepreneurial Track program. That isn’t to say that everyone agreed with his conclusions\, but no one could argue with his results. \nAfter the lecture\, Dr. Smith spent 20 minutes just answering questions about the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. Some people still had concerns about the viability of the model in providing access to the poorest of the poor\, but overall people seemed genuinely surprised at just how well the model worked–not only for the physicians\, but more importantly for the patients. \nDinner was provided before the lecture which provided time for students to interact with Dr. Smith. \n— \n[…] for The Surgery Center of Oklahoma.  The video blog resulted from Dr. Smith’s lecture on “Medicine’s New Frontier: Free Market Care and the Surgery Center of Oklahoma” before a large medical student audience at George Washington University on February 3. SUMMARY:U. of Louisville - Lecture: MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology
DESCRIPTION:MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology\n\n\n\n\nVas Abramov\, Director of Engineering and Manufacturing at Occam Design and CEO of MB Device\, LLC \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nMr Abramov had two separate presentations. The first part was an overview of what it takes to create a new medical product and get it placed in the medical field. He discussed ideas\, prototypes\, FDA regulations and testing\, funding\, and sales. \nIn the second part\, Mr Abramov discussed a new piece of technology\, the MB Device\, which is just starting testing. It is a cervical device that sends constant information to a smart phone or tablet and enables pre-term labors to be predicted one to two weeks early. This allows physicians to delay the labors and create better outcomes. It is projected to save $5-$15 billion of the $26 billion spent every year on pre-term labors.

This documentary is about Emergency Room medicine\, and specifically about the LA County Hospital’s C-Booth trauma center. Follow the eye-opening\, real world experience of ER doctors as their ability to deliver quality ER care changes when they move from the Old County Hospital to the New County Hospital. Read BRI contributing blogger Derek Dye’s movie review or watch the trailer. \n\n\n\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\n\n\nAs the first BRI event at St. Louis University\, we spent the first 10 minutes introducing the group. Our mission\, goals\, and accomplishments so far were presented\, and national membership was encouraged. We also expressed interest in working with other campus groups to organize events. We provided ice cream\, cookies\, and popcorn during the Code Black screening. After the film\, we encouraged everyone to attend our next event on March 25th (a presentation by a local concierge doctor).Attendees included medical students as well as emergency medicine department faculty. A few students stayed after the event to discuss their shadowing experiences in emergency departments with what was portrayed in the film. The students agreed that Code Black gave an accurate picture of reality and expressed similar frustration with burdensome regulation.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR Multnomah Athletic Club — Lecture: The Man Who Could Bring Down ObamaCare
DESCRIPTION:Are subsidies distributed through federal health insurance exchanges legal\, or not? This is the question posed by King v. Burwell\, scheduled for oral argument before the US supreme Court on March 4th with a ruling expected by June\, 2015. \nWhat is being deliberated\, and why? How likely is it that the subsidies will be found illegal\, and what would that mean for Oregon and Washington? \nJust six days before the case is to be heard\, you have the opportunity to learn the details from Michael Cannon\, considered by some to be the “intellectual father” of the strategy behind this legal challenge. He will discuss the case\, what is at stake in Oregon and Washington — and for the ACA in general — as well as present his thoughts on how Congress should reform healthcare. \nThis event takes place in Pacific Time zone. BRI is one of several event sponsors\, and there will be complimentary heavy hors d’oeuvres and dessert buffet\, coffee\, tea and lemonade. No-host bar (cash only). \nTickets: Click here.

SUMMARY:Rowan U. SOM - Lecture: Dr. Marian Mass
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marion Mass\, of Jellinek Pediatrics and a member of BRI’s Speakers Bureau will speak to us on preserving the doctor-patient relationship in an era of increasing regulation. Refreshments will be served. \n  \n  \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: \nThis event was co-sponsored by Synapse and the Student Pediatrics Medical Association. Many of the students (particularly those not affiliated with Synapse) had limited knowledge of health policy/economics. Many students seemed to have come to ask questions mostly regarding pediatrics. Once Dr. Mass began discussing her stance on free market health policy and economics\, providing supportive details for free market healthcare\, these students were completely enthralled and shifted all their attention and questions to this topic. Dr. Mass did a wonderful job explaining it to the students and answering their questions. The students have overwhelmingly expressed their excitement and interest in learning more about free market healthcare.

He also summarized some of the business details about his practice functions. \nAfter his presentation\, students were allowed to ask questions. There were non-stop questions until 12:45pm\, at which point\, Dr. Rybicki said that he had to leave but would be willing to come back again! There were more questions at this event by far\, compared to any of our events and most of the events that I have attended–students were very intrigued! \nThe number of attendees exceeded our expectations–only 12  RSVPs\, but 26 attended. Lunch was served\, and Benjamin Rush Institute brochures were made available.

SUMMARY:Georgetown's Family Medicine Interest Group Hosts: Lecture — Telemedicine\, House Calls\, and Accountability: The Future of Primary Care-
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event is held at 12noon EASTERN time. \nHosted by Georgetown’s Family Medicine Interest Group\, this event will feature a discussion of the innovative practice created by Dr. Alan Dappen\, DocTalker. DocTalker is a practice in Virginia which charges patients not with a fee-for-service model\, but instead by billing for the amount of time consumed. Dr. Dappen will discuss how his practice works with students of the Family Medicine Interest Group. BRI students are invited to attend as well. \nThe event is free and food will be provided. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-five interested students and faculty enjoyed free food and a discussion with Dr. Alan Dappen. Dr. Dappen is a founder of DocTalkers\, an innovative practice in Northern Virginia in which the physicians provide care on a fee schedule based on how much time is used. By charging a set amount per hour going in\, patients can have an idea of how much something might cost\, and doctors have more flexibility over their own schedule. Additionally\, care can be provided over the phone\, something which is not reimbursable by most insurance. DocTalkers has found many satisfied patients who have been in circumstances where other options\, such as the ER\, would have been exorbitantly more costly and time consuming. \n“There was more diverse opinion and greater outcome represented by combining with an established and pre-eminent organization on campus (Family Medicine Interest Group).” ~Danny McCorry\, past president\, BRI-Georgetown

SUMMARY:Ohio University - Lecture: Providing Affordable Healthcare to Rural Patients
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Law Sr.\, D.O.\, MBA \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 75 students attended to hear Dr. Law’s presentation detailing how his concierge primary care practice works. He takes care of the Amish and Mennonite community in southeastern Ohio\, a population that is uninsured and counts on Dr. Law’s discounted services for their health care. By cutting out the third party insurance companies\, Dr. Law has built a lucrative\, efficient\, and enjoyable rural practice that adequately cares for his underserved patient population. Dr. Law gave a great lecture\, comparing the cost of the quality medical care that he delivers to his rural patients and the cost of the medical care that would have been provided in a hospital or office setting. The differences were amazing\, and it was a great reminder of how thinking simply and efficiently can result in the delivery of quality medical care. Performing surgery or subjecting the patient to highly invasive treatments is not always what is the most effective\, both related to the patient’s health and to their budget. Dr. Law also talked about the expenses of owning and maintaining a medical practice. It was very interesting to learn about some of the different costs\, and it was interesting to analyze the breakdown of how an office’s income is distributed between personnel and supplies. \n  \n

An ethical deliberative process was used to explore multiple perspectives. \nAudience questions were well received during the discussion and at the end. This discussion is the launch point for future debates. (One is in the works for quarantine.) \nTESTIMONIALS:\n“The panel itself was engaging\, well moderated\, and focused. I really enjoyed that they were able to find very different sides to the topics while still respecting patient autonomy and decisions. I feel pretty well versed in the ethics of this proposed law and was still surprised to find novel arguments that gave me new light into the discussion. The audience participation was well done and respected the time of the panelists as well as the audience members. I would have liked to see more depth in the ethical deliberation. Much of the argument centered around opinion on the end effects of this law or comparison to other laws that appear similar. The argument that this law should be allowed because Oregon allows freedom regarding life-ending decisions is akin to saying that marijuana should be legal because alcohol is similar and already legal. These arguments are shallow and give little credence to the ethics of undermining drug testing laws that have prevented waves of “snake-oils” and elixers from reaching desperate patients looking for a last fighting chance. The political aspects of this proposal are incredibly interesting. In a nutshell\, this law is politically unstoppable; it provides a political move that appears to increase patient rights while paralleling a process that already exists\, but makes it ‘faster’ (by bypassing it). It also has no direct costs to taxpayers. I would have enjoyed a bit more reflection on the political. I learned a lot and very much enjoyed this panel meeting and hope there will be more as the year progresses. Thank you for getting this together.” \n“Great event! I loved the format and the opportunity for audience participation. I started out of the opinion that ‘right to try’ was a slam dunk; after listening to the discussion I am now on the fence. I had not previously considered the potential negative effects on drug companies or on research. I would have liked to hear even more debate on what it means to provide informed consent to a patient on a drug that is still in the early stages of research.”
