SUMMARY:U. of Louisville - Lecture: MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology
DESCRIPTION:MB Device and the Process of New Medical Technology\n\n\n\n\nVas Abramov\, Director of Engineering and Manufacturing at Occam Design and CEO of MB Device\, LLC \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nMr Abramov had two separate presentations. The first part was an overview of what it takes to create a new medical product and get it placed in the medical field. He discussed ideas\, prototypes\, FDA regulations and testing\, funding\, and sales. \nIn the second part\, Mr Abramov discussed a new piece of technology\, the MB Device\, which is just starting testing. It is a cervical device that sends constant information to a smart phone or tablet and enables pre-term labors to be predicted one to two weeks early. This allows physicians to delay the labors and create better outcomes. It is projected to save $5-$15 billion of the $26 billion spent every year on pre-term labors.

This documentary is about Emergency Room medicine\, and specifically about the LA County Hospital’s C-Booth trauma center. Follow the eye-opening\, real world experience of ER doctors as their ability to deliver quality ER care changes when they move from the Old County Hospital to the New County Hospital. Read BRI contributing blogger Derek Dye’s movie review or watch the trailer. \n\n\n\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\n\n\nAs the first BRI event at St. Louis University\, we spent the first 10 minutes introducing the group. Our mission\, goals\, and accomplishments so far were presented\, and national membership was encouraged. We also expressed interest in working with other campus groups to organize events. We provided ice cream\, cookies\, and popcorn during the Code Black screening. After the film\, we encouraged everyone to attend our next event on March 25th (a presentation by a local concierge doctor).Attendees included medical students as well as emergency medicine department faculty. A few students stayed after the event to discuss their shadowing experiences in emergency departments with what was portrayed in the film. The students agreed that Code Black gave an accurate picture of reality and expressed similar frustration with burdensome regulation.

SUMMARY:Portland\, OR Multnomah Athletic Club — Lecture: The Man Who Could Bring Down ObamaCare
DESCRIPTION:Are subsidies distributed through federal health insurance exchanges legal\, or not? This is the question posed by King v. Burwell\, scheduled for oral argument before the US supreme Court on March 4th with a ruling expected by June\, 2015. \nWhat is being deliberated\, and why? How likely is it that the subsidies will be found illegal\, and what would that mean for Oregon and Washington? \nJust six days before the case is to be heard\, you have the opportunity to learn the details from Michael Cannon\, considered by some to be the “intellectual father” of the strategy behind this legal challenge. He will discuss the case\, what is at stake in Oregon and Washington — and for the ACA in general — as well as present his thoughts on how Congress should reform healthcare. \nThis event takes place in Pacific Time zone. BRI is one of several event sponsors\, and there will be complimentary heavy hors d’oeuvres and dessert buffet\, coffee\, tea and lemonade. No-host bar (cash only). \nTickets: Click here.

SUMMARY:Rowan U. SOM - Lecture: Dr. Marian Mass
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marion Mass\, of Jellinek Pediatrics and a member of BRI’s Speakers Bureau will speak to us on preserving the doctor-patient relationship in an era of increasing regulation. Refreshments will be served. \n  \n  \nPOST-EVENT REPORT: \nThis event was co-sponsored by Synapse and the Student Pediatrics Medical Association. Many of the students (particularly those not affiliated with Synapse) had limited knowledge of health policy/economics. Many students seemed to have come to ask questions mostly regarding pediatrics. Once Dr. Mass began discussing her stance on free market health policy and economics\, providing supportive details for free market healthcare\, these students were completely enthralled and shifted all their attention and questions to this topic. Dr. Mass did a wonderful job explaining it to the students and answering their questions. The students have overwhelmingly expressed their excitement and interest in learning more about free market healthcare.

SUMMARY:St. Louis U. School of Medicine - Lecture: Concierge Medicine in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ken Rybicki will give us insight into why he went into concierge medicine\, what it’s like to be a concierge doctor\, and where the future of the profession is heading. SUMMARY:Georgetown's Family Medicine Interest Group Hosts: Lecture — Telemedicine\, House Calls\, and Accountability: The Future of Primary Care-
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event is held at 12noon EASTERN time. \nHosted by Georgetown’s Family Medicine Interest Group\, this event will feature a discussion of the innovative practice created by Dr. Alan Dappen\, DocTalker. DocTalker is a practice in Virginia which charges patients not with a fee-for-service model\, but instead by billing for the amount of time consumed. Dr. Dappen will discuss how his practice works with students of the Family Medicine Interest Group. BRI students are invited to attend as well. \nThe event is free and food will be provided. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-five interested students and faculty enjoyed free food and a discussion with Dr. Alan Dappen. Dr. Dappen is a founder of DocTalkers\, an innovative practice in Northern Virginia in which the physicians provide care on a fee schedule based on how much time is used. By charging a set amount per hour going in\, patients can have an idea of how much something might cost\, and doctors have more flexibility over their own schedule. Additionally\, care can be provided over the phone\, something which is not reimbursable by most insurance. DocTalkers has found many satisfied patients who have been in circumstances where other options\, such as the ER\, would have been exorbitantly more costly and time consuming. \n“There was more diverse opinion and greater outcome represented by combining with an established and pre-eminent organization on campus (Family Medicine Interest Group).” ~Danny McCorry\, past president\, BRI-Georgetown

SUMMARY:Ohio University - Lecture: Providing Affordable Healthcare to Rural Patients
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Law Sr.\, D.O.\, MBA \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 75 students attended to hear Dr. Law’s presentation detailing how his concierge primary care practice works. He takes care of the Amish and Mennonite community in southeastern Ohio\, a population that is uninsured and counts on Dr. Law’s discounted services for their health care. By cutting out the third party insurance companies\, Dr. Law has built a lucrative\, efficient\, and enjoyable rural practice that adequately cares for his underserved patient population. Dr. Law gave a great lecture\, comparing the cost of the quality medical care that he delivers to his rural patients and the cost of the medical care that would have been provided in a hospital or office setting. The differences were amazing\, and it was a great reminder of how thinking simply and efficiently can result in the delivery of quality medical care. Performing surgery or subjecting the patient to highly invasive treatments is not always what is the most effective\, both related to the patient’s health and to their budget. Dr. Law also talked about the expenses of owning and maintaining a medical practice. It was very interesting to learn about some of the different costs\, and it was interesting to analyze the breakdown of how an office’s income is distributed between personnel and supplies. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Oregon Health & Sciences University - Debate: Is 'Right To Try' Right for Oregon?
DESCRIPTION:Is “Right to Try” Right for Oregon?\nExperts from public health\, clinical practice\, bioethics\, and law meet to discuss the pros and cons of “Right to Try” legislation (Oregon House Bill 2300) \nXiao-Yu Han\, Student Organizer\nwith the stated goal of expanding access of experimental drugs to terminally ill patients in Oregon. Join us and help shape the conversation: Should Oregon join 13 other states in adopting expanded access? \n\nTime: Monday\, April 20\, 5:30-7:15pm (light reception from 5:30-6:00pm\, panel from 6:00-7:15pm) \nModerator: Alan Melnick\, MD\, MPH\, is Associate Professor for the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at OHSU and the Health Officer for Clark\, Cowlitz\, Skamania and Wahkiakum Counties\, WA. \nPanelist: Kurt Altman\, JD\, is a Senior Attorney for the Goldwater Institute’s Scharf-Norton Center for Constitutional Litigation and drafted the model legislation for “Right to Try.” Before joining the Institute\, Kurt operated a private litigation and appellate practice\, focusing on criminal law in both state and federal courts. \nPanelist: Chandra Basham\, MD\, is an attending physician in Primary Care at the Portland VA Medical Center. She is currently studying for her JD at Lewis and Clark Law School and is completing an externship at the Oregon State Legislature. \nPanelist: Jeremy Cetnar\, MD\, MSHPR\, is an Assistant Professor for the Department of Medicine at OHSU and is board certified in internal medicine and hematology/oncology. \nPanelist: Christopher Griffin\, MD\, MBA\, FACHE\, is a physician executive and radiologist with over 25 years of health care experience and leadership who recently decided to go to law school. He is an alumnus of Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine and currently attends Lewis and Clark Law School. \nPanelist: Lissi Hansen\, RN\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor for the School of Nursing at OHSU and has worked extensively in bioethics\, palliative medicine\, and end-of-life care. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Experts from public health\, clinical practice\, bioethics\, and law met to discuss the pros and cons of “Right to Try” legislation (Oregon House Bill 2300)\, with the stated goal of expanding terminally ill patients’ access to experimental drugs in Oregon. \nThirty medical students\, PSU students\, Lewis and Clark Law students\, and members of the public attended the discussion. An ethical deliberative process was used to explore multiple perspectives. \nAudience questions were well received during the discussion and at the end. This discussion is the launch point for future debates. (One is in the works for quarantine.) \nTESTIMONIALS:\n“The panel itself was engaging\, well moderated\, and focused. I really enjoyed that they were able to find very different sides to the topics while still respecting patient autonomy and decisions. I feel pretty well versed in the ethics of this proposed law and was still surprised to find novel arguments that gave me new light into the discussion. The audience participation was well done and respected the time of the panelists as well as the audience members. I would have liked to see more depth in the ethical deliberation. Much of the argument centered around opinion on the end effects of this law or comparison to other laws that appear similar. The argument that this law should be allowed because Oregon allows freedom regarding life-ending decisions is akin to saying that marijuana should be legal because alcohol is similar and already legal. These arguments are shallow and give little credence to the ethics of undermining drug testing laws that have prevented waves of “snake-oils” and elixers from reaching desperate patients looking for a last fighting chance. The political aspects of this proposal are incredibly interesting. In a nutshell\, this law is politically unstoppable; it provides a political move that appears to increase patient rights while paralleling a process that already exists\, but makes it ‘faster’ (by bypassing it). It also has no direct costs to taxpayers. I would have enjoyed a bit more reflection on the political. I learned a lot and very much enjoyed this panel meeting and hope there will be more as the year progresses. Thank you for getting this together.” \n“Great event! I loved the format and the opportunity for audience participation. I started out of the opinion that ‘right to try’ was a slam dunk; after listening to the discussion I am now on the fence. I had not previously considered the potential negative effects on drug companies or on research. I would have liked to hear even more debate on what it means to provide informed consent to a patient on a drug that is still in the early stages of research.”

SUMMARY:Marian University COM - Lecture: The Hippocratic Oath: Still Ethically Valid?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jason Eberl\, Semler Endowed Chair for Medical Ethics in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Marian University \nDr. Eberl will be lecturing on the ethics portrayed in the Hippocratic Oath\, along with talking about the role it plays in medicine today. He will also discuss other current perspectives of medical ethics in healthcare. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Over a pizza lunch\, Dr. Eberl discussed the differences between an oath\, promise\, vow\, pledge\, and what taking an oath is supposed to mean for the person saying it. Then he read the original Hippocratic Oath\, and we discussed portions of the oath that could be controversial today. We then looked at a modified AMA version of the Hippocratic Oath\, followed by discussion. Lastly\, we look at the Osteopathic Oath and discussed that as well. Fifteen people attended\, and the audience was split almost 50-50 students and faculty. It was rewarding to see this much interest in the topic. \nAdditional comment: […] Medicine (MUCOM) focused philosophically on a doctor’s vocation. SUMMARY:University of Louisville — Debate: The Future of Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern time zone. \nUniversity of Louisville School of Medicine is proud to host another BRI Chapter Debate on the future of healthcare. Dr. Garrett Adams\, president of Physicians for a National Health Program and  Dr. Michael Strickland of LetMyDoctorPractice.org will argue both sides of this highly contested national debate. Dr. Strickland will be taking a stance on a more conservative\, private payer healthcare system; Dr. Adams will argue for a more liberal\, single-payer health plan. \nThere will also be a free Qdoba buffet provided before the event! \nStreet meter parking is available all around campus\, and there is also a UofL garage at the corner of Chestnut and Preston Street. \nWe look forward to seeing you at what will surely be an informative\, lively event. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 70 students and faculty attended BRI-ULSOM Chapter’s one-on-one debate on the future of healthcare. Because our speakers were both physicians and not healthcare policy experts\, the tone of the event was more that of an open discussion than a debate. Dr. Adams and Dr. Strickland frequently agreed and tended to avoid taking a firm stand on issues. This can be typical of physicians who as healers can lean toward  smoothing over differences and focusing on solutions\, but who consequently can avoid tackling legitimately controversial topics. However\, it was valuable to discover where we share common ground and can find compatible healthcare policy solutions.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — Lecture: How Freedom Enriches Medicine and Life
DESCRIPTION:Please join us  for a late afternoon lecture over soft drinks to hear Dr. Richard B. Gunderman discuss how freedom in medicine directly affects our quality of life. Exactly how does freedom enrich life\, of which medicine is just one aspect? Dr. Gunderman is Chancellor’s Professor of Radiology\, Pediatrics\, Medical Education\, Philosophy\, Liberal Arts\, Philanthropy\, and Medical Humanities and Health Studies at Indiana University. We think he’ll have some thought-provoking things to say.[NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern time zone.] \nPlease share this event with your colleagues\, friends and family. All are welcome\, and we look forward to seeing you here. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nDr. Gunderman spoke on two different perspectives from which to view medicine: one from Jean-Jacques Rousseau\, and another from Soren Keirkegaard. After his 50-minute talk\, he took questions and discussion for another 25 minutes. It was a well-presented lecture\, providing new ways to think about medicine. All the students attending were very engaged and seemed to really enjoy it. \nI think this lecture was the best we have had so far for our Chapter. In all honesty\, this lecture should be in every medical school curriculum. It really made all the students think about why they were in medicine\, and [look] at two completely different ways to view medicine. ~Trenton Schmale\, President\, BRI-Marian Chapter \n \n(As an interesting side note\, comparing bureaucratic mandates when one is forced to purchase versus when one is free to make purchasing choices\, Trenton continued: “We were able to provide food for the event funded by the BRI national office. The best part was because this wasn’t money from the student government\, we didn’t have to use the school catering company. SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine — Lecture: How Prepaid Health Management Could Prevent Medicare Bankruptcy
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in EASTERN time zone. \nDr. Charles Willey\, physician and CEO of Innovare Health Advocates will discuss the numerous healthcare businesses he has created and managed in the St. Louis area for almost 30 years. Specifically\, we will discuss how he works with Medicare Advantage patients to keep them happy and healthy\, all while operating at a fraction of the average cost. Dr. Willey’s business model shows that keeping patients healthy saves them money\, which makes them all the more happy — this is true “healthcare.” You can read his testimony “Oversight of IRS’s Legal Basis for Expanding Obamacares’s Taxes and Subsidies” before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy Policy\, Health Care and Entitlements. \nThere is no cost to attend this event\, and refreshments will be served. \nPARKING: Hickory East Garage\n3424 Hickory Street\nSt. Louis\, MO 63104 \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: \nTwenty-five students enjoyed some local BBQ while listening to Dr. Charles Willey give a presentation about his career. One of his take home messages was that we need more physician leaders in the business of healthcare. Dr. Willey emphasized that physicians are in the best position to understand and improve patients’ health\, including their financial health involving medical expenditures. \nAfter graduating from medical school and practicing as an Internist\, Dr. Willey took leadership roles which enabled him to see the inefficiencies in our healthcare system. Due to his frustrations\, he started an insurance company\, invented an electronic prescription writer\, and began to reorganize his approach to healthcare. Dr. Willey began to truly understand that healthy patients are less expensive to care for than sick patients\, and so started investing in more personal relationships with his patients and employees\, emphasizing preventative care. Dr. Willey explained that as he tried to help his patients and employees stay happy\, healthy\, and active\, he was forced to become more politically active as well. The heavy burden of regulations that come with the Affordable Care Act have made it increasingly hard for Dr. Willey to give his patients and employees the care and benefits that they need and want. \nBy the end of the presentation\, students had chosen to miss 20 minutes of their next class to listen and ask questions. Dr. Willey gladly stayed after for this discussion period and passed out reading material summarizing the basic ideals foundational to his successful businesses and clinics. He also provided a print copy of his article\, “One Doctor’s Prescription To Cut Health Care Costs.” Dr. Willey encouraged us to stay in contact\, and BRI-St. Louis University Chapter plans to have him return for another presentation or BRI event.

SUMMARY:Dartmouth — Debate: Physician Aid in Dying — Should it Be Legal? 3 Viewpoints
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nA pre-event cheese and crackers reception begins at 6:45 pm. \nPlease join us for an evening of lively\, thought-provoking debate as we look at three views on physician aid in dying. What are the moral\, ethical\, and medical ramifications of the question? How do we take care of the dying in a way that supports their and their family’s wishes\, while observing the many religious and scientific aspects of these decisions? Ultimately\, who decides — the patient\, the family\, the society\, or the physician? \nWe are proud to present three distinguished experts on the matter: \n  Dr. Ronald Green\, Professor of Religion/Dartmouth\,   Peter Schwartz\, Retired Chairman of the Board of the Ayn Rand Institute\, and   Dr. Robert Macauley\, Professor of Pediatrics\, University of Vermont College of Medicine. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: This event went really well —  especially as the first large event for the BRI-Dartmouth Chapter. The topic choice was a success in that it attracted people interested in the intersection of medicine and ethics\, including from the medical school and the ethics department at Dartmouth Hitchcock hospital. The mix of viewpoints that we invited was a strong point. We had one speaker against physician aid in dying and two for it\, but the two for it had enough differences in the underlying reasons that there was still plenty of variety. \nThe moderator (Jared Rhoads\, MPH’16\, creator of healthpolicy.tv) gave introduced the topic\, made all of the typical “housekeeping” announcements\, and introduced each speaker. Each speaker was given 12 minutes to do an opening statement from the lectern. This was followed by a round of responses\, which was tricky with a three-person format. We didn’t spend too much time on that\, and shortly moved on to audience Q&A. There were some passionate voices in the audience (and some lengthy comments) but there weren’t any inappropriate speeches or hostile questions. \nWe were very pleased with the turnout from the faculty\, the general Dartmouth community\, and medical students. Unfortunately\, there weren’t many undergrads there\, which was a little disappointing. \nEveryone enjoyed the pre-event refreshments and networking time.

SUMMARY:Yuri Maltsev\, Economist: Healthcare in the Soviet Union — Wine & Cheese presentation
DESCRIPTION:Patrick and Mary Peterson\, Beth Haynes and the Benjamin Rush Institute invite you to join an intimate (30 guests maximum)\, convivial gathering\, to sample fine wines and cheeses and meet other free market friends. You will also hear our special guest\, “the last Soviet Defector\,” Yuri Malstev speak about the dangers of socialized medicine. Yuri will offer some brief remarks on his experiences with socialized medicine in the Soviet Union as well as some key points toward a better system from an Austrian free market ideas perspective. Hosted at the beautiful Half Moon Bay Wine & Cheese\, this promises to be a memorable evening. We can’t imagine a better place for free market dads to be on Father’s Day! \n \nAssuming that Obamacare will either be declared unconstitutional (at least a large part of it) by the Supreme court in the last week in June\, or that it will simply fail from its own inefficiencies\, costs and contradictions\, what will come next?  The two clear but opposite paths for healthcare need some more consideration: socialized or free market. \nYou have a unique opportunity to enjoy\, in a sophisticated setting\, the wit and wisdom of someone greatly familiar with both paths\, from personal historical experience in Soviet Russia as well as logical\, but realistic\, Austrian free market economic theory. \nEconomics Professor Yuri Maltsev has taught at Carthage College in Kenosha\, Wisconsin since 1991. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Moscow State University\, and his Ph.D. in Labor Economics at the Institute of Labor Research in Moscow\, Russia. Before defecting to the United States in 1989\, he was a member of a senior Soviet economics team that worked on President Gorbachev’s reforms package of perestroika. Prof. Maltsev was a Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington\, D.C.\, a federal research agency. \nProf. Maltsev has also appeared on CNN\, Financial Network News\, PBS Newshour\, C-Span\, Fox News\, CBC\, and other American and international television and radio programs. He has lectured at leading universities\, corporations\, banks\, colleges\, churches\, schools\, and community centers all over the world\, and is renowned for his wry humor and poignant stories. He has authored five books and hundreds of articles in U.S. and foreign publications.  His special insights come from his study of the great Austrian as well as other free market economists\, which he discovered amazingly\, while still in the Soviet Union. \nThe book Requiem for Marx\, edited and with an introduction by Maltsev\, will be available for purchase and autographing.

SUMMARY:The Heritage Foundation—Panel Discussion: The ICD-10’s Costly and Complex Burden on Doctors and Patients
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place EST. \nWe strongly encourage you to attend this panel discussion on the new ICD-10 regulations coming imminently to doctors and physicians throughout healthcare. Sponsored by The Heritage Foundation\, a long-time BRI ally and partner in the fight to preserve the doctor-patient relationship\, the panel features Dr. Robert Moffit\, a favorite speaker in BRI’s Speakers Bureau\, and BRI’s very own student leader and past Heritage Foundation Intern\, John Grimsley (BRI-Georgetown)\, who has contributed enormously to this discussion\, and others. \nOn October 1\, 2015\, a new standardized system of classifying disease\, the ICD-10\, will be imposed on practicing physicians and others in the health care sector. Since the 1980s\, the U.S. has conflated the disparate goals of research and reimbursement by linking the ICD codes to payments for health care. This unwise policy will be compounded by replacing the current ICD-9 with the newer and vastly more complex ICD-10. Adoption of the ICD-10 comes with significant costs and trade-offs. This unfunded mandate not only perpetuates a misguided policy decision that confuses the disparate goals of research and reimbursement\, but also adds significant financial and administrative burdens on physicians and other health care providers. \nJoin us as our panelists discuss their research and insight on this critical issue.\nFeaturing \nStephen F. Hayes \nColumnist\, The Weekly Standard \nModerating a Discussion with\nJohn Grimsley \nM.D. Candidate\, Georgetown University\, Class of 2018 \nGerald Harmon\, M.D. \nAmerican Medical Association Trustee\, Board of Trustees \nJohn S. O’Shea\, M.D. \nSenior Fellow\, Health Policy Studies\, The Heritage Foundation \nHosted by\nRobert E.
