SUMMARY:BRI Virtual Event on protecting physician identity with Leah Houston\, MD\, HPEC
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Leah Houston joined Benjamin Rush Institute on April 17\, 2020 to speak on “Restoring Autonomy and Agency to the Physician Patient Relationship with Self Sovereign Identity Technology.” Watch the full video below. \nLeah Houston\, MD is the founder of HPEC\, and a board-certified Emergency Physician. While practicing emergency medicine across the US for nearly 10 years she recognized a common problem: uncompensated administrative burdens related to physician employment and credentialing are a leading cause of administrative waste and physician burnout. \nShe realized that distributed ledger technology could solve the obstructive regulatory problems in healthcare\, by creating a decentralized community of physicians. She began working on the project and named it HPEC – the Humanitarian Physicians Empowerment Community. HPEC is building a platform that will give every physician a self-sovereign digital identity attached to their credentials in order to create a democratic digital physicians guild. HPEC will streamline the current antiquated and laborious process of credentialing\, reduce administrative waste\, improve access to care and give physicians sovereign ownership of their data and employment rights. The organization will also create an opportunity for physicians to communicate more efficiently about policy\, and practice in order to improve patient care. \nIn presenting a solution that has the potential to alleviate the administrative waste for health systems\, government and practicing physicians she is a recognized and requested national speaker on the topic of decentralized identity as it relates to healthcare. Her work was featured as a part of the first HIMSS Blockchain and Healthcare Textbook\, published in 2019. A lifelong advocate\, innovator and investor she has also spent lobbying for public policy and healthcare reform. She understands the problems that plague the healthcare system from the inside and out\, and has dedicated her time to repairing the current global healthcare crisis. HPEC will restore physician autonomy to the practice of medicine\, will begin in the United States and expand.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED UNTIL 2021 - 2020 FMMA Annual Conference - Mission Possible
DESCRIPTION:Healthcare Entrepreneurship as the Antidote to the Broken Healthcare System \nEntrepreneurship is much more than a startup or a small business. It is the mechanism for creating and facilitating consumer value in the face of uncertainty. Entrepreneurs manage uncertainty and seek to resolve it with solutions for consumers. In medicine and healthcare\, entrepreneurship involves the restoration the physician-patient relationship. It means employers\, employees\, and advisors establishing trust to manage the uncertainty of medical care. Good entrepreneurial judgement is rewarded with profit and bad judgement suffers financial loss. [More Information]

SUMMARY:BRI Virtual Event Series with Keith Smith\, M.D.\, The Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, Economic Fallacies and the Delivery of Medical Care
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Keith Smith of The Surgery Center of Oklahoma joined Benjamin Rush Institute on Thursday\, October 29 to discuss Economic Fallacies and the Delivery of Medical Care. Watch the full video below. \nDr. G. Keith Smith is a board certified anesthesiologist in private practice since 1990. In 1997\, he co-founded The Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, an outpatient surgery center in Oklahoma City. SCO is owned by over 50 of the top physicians and surgeons in central Oklahoma. Dr. Smith serves as the medical director\, CEO and managing partner while maintaining an active anesthesia practice. \nIn 2009\, Dr. Smith launched a website that displays SCO’s all-inclusive pricing for various surgical procedures. This move garnered national\, and even international\, attention. Not only do many uninsured or underinsured American patients take advantage of this cash pricing\, but many Canadians have traveled to The Surgery Center to receive care. Recently\, the focus has expanded to working with self-funded employers to offer high value care to their employees. Increasingly\, self-funded health plans are taking advantage of Dr. Smith’s pricing model resulting in significant savings to their employee health plans. \nThe free market focus of the Surgery Center\, the innovator of this free market model in the U.S.\, has gained the endorsement of policymakers and legislators. Dr. Smith hopes as many facilities as possible will adopt a transparent pricing model\, a move he believes will lower costs for all and improve quality of care. Dr. Smith is the co-founder of the Free Market Medical Association. The association provides a platform where buyers\, both individuals and employers\, who are seeking high quality\, affordable healthcare can find free market minded sellers\, both physicians and facilities.
