DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nALL are welcome to attend Chicago Medical School’s Benjamin Rush Institute Chapter’s first informational meeting and networking event. We will be serving snacks and soft drinks\, and will discuss BRI’s mission to promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care. \nWe will also use this as an opportunity to invite interested students to run as BRI Officers\, or volunteer\, and what events we would be interested in holding for the remainder of the academic year. \nWe hope you’ll join us! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nEight (8) interested students joined us at our inaugural event. This meeting had a dual purpose: to serve as a general meeting for the chapter board and affiliated members\, and to provide prospective members — many who had signed up for our email list earlier in the year — information on what we do to achieve our goals\, and how to become full members and seek board positions. \nUnfortunately\, for reasons beyond our control\, we were moved from our scheduled room\, and unable to adequately communicate the change. Needless to say\, turnout was much lower than anticipated. We are going to hold another event soon to ensure that everyone interested has an opportunity to learn about BRI. \nWe did have a productive meeting among board members and other active members\, and have a good plan for the rest of the year in place.

At least according to Dr. Robert F. Graboyes. Dr. Graboyes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Institute at George Mason University. BRI-Georgetown is very happy to welcome Dr. Graboyes back for a repeat delivery of his very insightful\, much requested healthcare innovation lecture\, “Fortress & Frontiers.” Dr. Graboyes will discuss what NEEDS to be done from a policy perspective to open up markets\, which allow healthcare innovators to DECREASE COSTS and INCREASE ACCESS for all patients. \nRefreshments will be served; RSVPs are appreciated! \nFor further reading by Dr. Graboyes:\nWhy Both Sides Are Losing the Healthcare Debate\nWhy ‘Repeal and Replace’ Will Never Work \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 45 students and faculty joined us for Dr. Graboyes’ lunch lecture.  \nThe current healthcare debate misses the point: Politicians from both sides of the aisle determine the success of healthcare policy by the extent of the coverage and NOT the cost of care\, nor the quality of the care provided. \nIt’s not Left vs. Right … It’s Fortress vs. Frontier: Dr. Graboyes states that the goal of the Fortress is to prevent any imaginable bad outcome in healthcare and to shield those in the medical industry from any competition. The Frontier understands that innovation\, quality elevation\, and cost suppression cannot occur without bearing some risk and encouraging economic competition. \nThe idea that “Healthcare is Different” is a false narrative: Dr. Graboyes compares the healthcare industry to the technological industry\, noting that technology companies\, such as Apple and IBM\, have been in competition which elicited vast expansion and cost reduction in the industry. The argument that healthcare deals with risks that are far greater than that of other markets is untrue. SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — Lecture: Direct Practice Medicine: Can the Free Market Fix Healthcare?
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nPlease join us for an enlightening lecture by Dr. Jonathan Schmidt from Priority Physicians. Dr. Schmidt will discuss Direct Primary Care\, Concierge medicine\, and a hybrid model. He will further explain how insurance\, medicare\, medicaid\, and RVUs work as well. This will be an informal lecture with lots of time for questions. \nDr. Jonathan P. Schmidt is a board certified physician in family medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University and went on to the University of Illinois where he received his doctor of medicine degree. Upon graduation\, Dr. Schmidt moved to South Bend\, IN\, where he completed his family medicine residency at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center\, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. \nDr. Schmidt sought out experience in direct practice medicine during his residency and is excited to be practicing in a way that allows him to put the needs of his patients first. In his free time\, Dr. Schmidt enjoys spending time with his wife Cristal\, son Kiptyn and daughter Kenley. He also enjoys being outdoors and participating in water sport activities. \nFood and drinks will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated! \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nBefore an intimate student audience of 13 students\, Dr. Jonathan Schmidt talked briefly about Medicare/Medicaid\, RVUs\, and insurance. He then spoke on concierge medicine\, direct primary care\, a hybrid model\, and the positives and negatives of each. \nAfter his 25-minute presentation\, Dr. Schmidt opened it up for questions. For the next hour attendees asked questions on very engaging topics: malpractice insurance\, ethics of being a businessman while also a doctor\, the lifestyle of a direct practice doctor\, how to get more educated on direct practice medicine\, different pricing strategies\, how patient care is improved\, the future of healthcare\, and many more! SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine: Lecture — Healthcare Policy with Dr. Todd Fredricks
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture presentation on healthcare policy and the future\, by Dr. Todd Fredricks\, family practitioner and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at OUHCOM since 2012. Dr. Fredricks has been a long-time advocate of what it takes personally\, and pro-actively in healthcare policy\, to be a great doctor. He has been a long-time BRI supporter\, and was a featured speaker at BRI’s Leadership Conference in 2014 in Denver\, CO. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty (30) students were present to hear Dr. Fredricks speak about his experience in the medical field and his interesting perspective on what the future of medicine and health policy holds for us as future physicians. He educated us on some of the political issues that recent presidents and congresses have previously\, are currently\, and will be dealing with in the future\, and how their actions impact our future. Mostly\, Dr. Fredricks focused on the financial issues that our country and we as doctors will have to face. Although it was shocking to hear what Dr. Fredricks had to say\, we all found his discussion and viewpoints inspiring and motivating as we look to make changes for the future of medicine. Dr. Fredricks stressed the copious benefits of cutting waste from the medical field\, increasing quality and developing meaningful relationships with our patients. \nThe event was a great first speaker event for BRI-OUHCOM new members. Dr. Fredricks is the BRI-OUHCOM Chapter advisor\, and often talks at meetings. He shared his illuminating experiences in both military and clinical medicine\, providing members with a wonderful overview.

SUMMARY:George Washington University: Lecture — Dr. Josh Umbehr\, MD\, on practice innovation\, patient advocacy and health policy

Food will be provided; RSVPs are appreciated. \nALL are welcome to attend this evening presentation. Dr. Josh Umbehr from Wichita\, Kansas will be in DC this Friday\, Nov. 6\, to speak about his creative — and increasingly spreading — approach to addressing the pressing issues of the need for medical practice innovation\, patient advocacy\, and workable healthcare solutions. “Dr. Josh” began AtlasMD\, a direct-primary care practice\, in which patients pay a modest monthly fee and in return have nearly unlimited access to primary care. This model allows doctors to have fewer patients than average\, meaning more time for doctors and patients to interact. He will speak to why Direct Primary care may be the answer to better healthcare in the US. \nThere will be a mixer following at Mission in Dupont. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-five students from Georgetown\, GWU\, and Howard University listened for a little over two hours as Dr. Josh Umbehr discussed his innovative approach to addressing rising healthcare costs and healthcare quality for patients in rural settings. He shared with the group his unique business model for AtlasMD\, a company he helped develop\, and how its principles and concepts can be applied universally to areas other than just family practice and in rural settings. \nA key point that Dr. Josh presented to the group was that as busy medical students we think outside the box and challenge the norms\, especially in a system that has been accepted as “broken.” Dr. Josh exemplified the ability to challenge the status quo with AtlasMD and the benefits he is able to provide his patients. He also spent some time pressing the group to think about how health insurance is different from other forms of insurance\, and the appropriateness—as well the consequences of the current ideology around it. \nDr. Josh spent the last 30 minutes or so of the discussion running through some example scenarios on how he is able to save his patients’ money. One example was in the area of prescriptions.  He demonstrated systems he uses to discuss with his patients what prescriptions would be best for them based  not only on effectiveness\, but also cost. It surprised many of the students to discover that some prescriptions can be purchased for even less than the cost of some insurance plans’ co-pays. \n  \n“Dr. Josh went far beyond expectation with his speaking engagement. He went an hour past the hour we reserved for the talk due to group interest. DESCRIPTION:BRI-SUNY Downstate will be listed on gofundme.com\, and hosting a free information and donation table outside the cafeteria to raise funds for this very deserving non-profit organization that contributes back to our community. East Flatbush Village (EFV) works with local at-risk youth to help them better their lives. SUNY Downstate and BRI both encourage student leaders to give back to the community and to those in need through charitable work. Please stop by our table and contribute what you can! \n \nA word about East Flatbush Village from their website: “Our organization combats violence within the community by providing these children with recreational activities and educational tools. Our programs enables youths ages 3 through 18 years old to express themselves in creative and positive ways while building their self esteem through football\, swimming\, soccer\, dance\, cheerleading and other recreational activities. These activities provide the youths not only with resources and outlets but also with mentors such as teachers\, coaches and volunteers\, who are willing and able to guide them. Building them a strong foundation which they will carry with them into adulthood.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: As part of a service learning project at SUNY Downstate\, three members of our BRI chapter worked to raise money to donate to East Flatbush Village Inc. We utilized both gofundme and a donation table outside of the cafeteria to raise funds. In total we have raised approximately $550. \n“I have been volunteering with EFV through two different clubs at school\, and after seeing first hand how they give kids the tools to reach their full potential\, I feel very strongly that donations to this organization will be used very effectively. EFV works on the front lines in a disadvantaged community where violence and povertry are all too real. The folks who work there understand the community and know how to best serve the community’s youth. SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine: Lecture — Baffling with BS: Placing Evidence Based Medicine Under the Microscope
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nALL are welcome to join us for a lunch lecture “Bias in Medical Data\,” with Dr. Timothy Von Fange. Dr. Von Fange will be speaking on how the bias that occurs in medical data affects how doctors practice medicine. \nFood and drinks will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated. Park in the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine parking lot. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: An intimate group of four students enjoyed lunch and listened as Dr. Von Fange delivered a great lecture on all the different types of biases in journal articles: selection bias\, recall bias\, chronology bias\, performance bias\, citation bias\, confounding bias\, etc. Recent data states that 33-80% of meta-analyses are found to have an industry tie. He then went on to talk about “subtle bias\,” where an article’s author may have an indirect interest (career advancement\, political advancement\, personal associations). \nDr. Von Fange then talked about the Patient-Centered Medical Home and a few studies showing how “efficient” it was. He really went into the numbers on these studies and it was clear there was “data misrepresentation.” One of these studies for the patient-centered medical home actually showed that health spending accounts were more effective\, but it was never mentioned in the discussion of the article. Dr. Von Fange concluded\, when reading a journal article there should be a healthy amount of skepticism and to scrutinize research data before believing it all.

SUMMARY:University of Delaware: Debate — What causes rising health insurance premiums? Greedy corporations\, or costly regulations?
DESCRIPTION:What causes rising health insurance premiums? Greedy Corporations? Costly Regulations? Both? Neither?\nBRI Student Leaders\, the debaters and moderator.\nGeoff Wilson\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students\, faculty and community participated in a debate focused on the cause of rising health insurance premiums. The goal was to explore whether costly regulations\, or corporate greed cause health insurance premiums to rise. The debate was conducted with the Oxford debate format\, and a pre- and post-vote was taken to determine which side won the debate. John Graham\, citing costly regulations as the cause of rising healthcare premiums\, won. \nAt the end\, the audience asked questions of the debaters. Many in the audience said they really liked seeing the debate and learned a lot. It was very helpful in getting signups for a potential future BRI chapter at the University of Delaware. \n\nJohn Graham\n“I think the event would have benefitted from more disagreement\, but it was very helpful in getting the audience to think about the issues of rising healthcare premiums.” ~Zach Howell\, BRI student leader\, University of Delaware \n\n———– \nNOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern time zone. We promise to have a lively debate over whether the cause of rising healthcare premiums can be attributed to corporate greed\, or to costly government regulations. \nDr. Geoff Wilson of Physicians Organizing Committee will argue the case that rising health insurance premiums stem from greedy corporations. While obtaining his biochemistry degree at UC Davis\, Mr. Wilson was awarded a Georg August University scholarship to study in Göttingen\, Germany\, where he worked at the Max Plank Institute for Biophysical Chemistry. While attending UCSF Medical School he became active in several organizing efforts to expand access to patient care and has since spent more than 30 years in direct advocacy on behalf of physicians and hospital medical staff fighting to reverse the encroachments of insurance companies\, hospital corporations and government entities into matters of patient care. Dr. Wilson has pioneered the development of physicians organizing outside of the confines of the national labor laws\, anti-trust laws and other restrictive legislation in order to bring physicians together to win victories on behalf of patient care. \nJohn Graham\, is Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute and a Senior Fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis. Formerly Vice President at the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed)\, he previously directed health policy research at the Pacific Research Institute and the Fraser Institute. In prior positions he served as Assistant Vice President at Kidder\, Peabody Securities Company; Associate at Goldman Sachs and Company; Political and Military Analyst for the United Nations Operation in Somalia; Development Consultant for Covenant House Vancouver; and Captain in the Canadian Army. He will represent for the side that Costly Regulations are to blame. \nModerator: Jonathan Kirch is the Government Relations Director of the American Heart Association for Delaware and the City of Philadelphia. A graduate of the leadership and public administration programs here at the University of Delaware\, Mr. Kirch is responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s public policy and advocacy initiatives. Mr. Kirch serves on the Governor’s Council for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention\, and the Governor’s Pedestrian Council and is an expert in advocacy and lobbying in the public health community in Delaware. Jonathan successfully advocated for the strongest menu labeling law in the country in Philadelphia and participated in the negotiations on Capitol Hill on the federal menu labeling law. Jonathan served as the first Chair of the Leadership Council of the Delaware Healthy Eating and Active Living Coalition and remains on the coalition’s Leadership Council today.

We will learn about his pricing model at the Surgery Center of Oklahoma with a question and answer session following. \nWe also hope to discuss how price transparency will affect the medical field in general and how we can help facilitate free markets in our future profession. \nBRI student leaders from Saint Louis University with Dr. Keith Smith\, co-founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, via Skype.\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-eight students attended our Skype teleconference with Dr. Keith Smith. Dr. Smith gave a brief 10-15 minute introduction of himself and what he does at his practice\, Surgery Center of Oklahoma. This was followed by a Q&A session. The students seemed very engaged and asked thought-provoking questions. Somebody asked about poor people not being able to pay upfront with cash. Dr. Smith responded that he did do charity work and that his work is helping push prices down for everybody. \n \n“Overall\, we got more people to attend than we expected. SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine: Operation Leftover — A community service event
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. \nThe Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine – BRI Chapter will be pairing up with the Thomas More Society and Operation Leftover to meet and serve the homeless and impoverished in Indianapolis. We will meet at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church to take canned foods\, warm clothing\, personal hygiene items\, and other appropriate donations to people in need around downtown Indianapolis. \nALL are welcome and invited to join us in an evening of service. Donations are also appreciated. \nPark in the parking lot at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: A total of 50 people — eight medical students (seven from Marian University and one from Indiana University)\, teamed up with the Thomas More Society and Operation Leftover to gather donations (food\, water\, clothing\, blankets\, hygiene products\, bus passes)\, and then walk around downtown Indianapolis giving these donations to the homeless. It was truly an eye opening experience seeing how these people lived\, along with watching their expressions when we gave them so many things. This was a great event and we look forward to doing this again in the future. \nTo be an official club at MUCOM the school requires we have at least one community service event per semester. When I learned about Operation Leftover I thought this would be something great to do. We ended up getting 4 people to come out to help for BRI\, and the Catholic Medical Association ended up coming as well after BRI promoted the event. I was talking with all the medical students before we started\, and the students from the Catholic Medical Association were very interested in what BRI stands for. They are for getting government regulation out of healthcare\, because they realize it diminishes the doctor-patient relationship. They see it makes healthcare more expensive\, and causes doctors to spend less time with patients because there is more busywork. They also don’t like how these regulations\, Obamacare being the big one\, force doctors to do things for patients that goes against their religion.

SUMMARY:Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Debate — Be it Resolved: The United States should adopt the single-payer system.
DESCRIPTION:Reception will begin at 6:30pm. The debate will begin at 7:00pm\, Eastern. \nPlease join us for a lively debate on the merits and pitfalls of single payer healthcare\, sponsored by students for PHNP. We will focus on the question: \nIs single-payer healthcare right for America?\nArguing for single-payer healthcare: \nLeonard Rodberg\, PhD\, is Professor and Chair of Urban Studies at Queens College/CUNY. He holds a PhD in Physics received from MIT in 1957. Along with his late wife\, Joanne Lukomnik\, he was one of the founders of Physicians for a National Health Program. He began his professional life as a nuclear physicist\, but he has strayed far afield. Dr. Rodberg has served as Director of the Science Policy Office in the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and Resident Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington\, DC and has been involved in the struggle for health care reform since 1974\, when he led the development of the Dellums Health Service Act. He has served on the Board of the NY Metro Chapter of PNHP for a number of years and is Treasurer and Research Director of the Chapter. He also created and directs the Infoshare Community Data web site (www.infoshare.org). \nElizabeth Rosenthal\, MD recently retired from her Mamaroneck practice of dermatology after 35 years.  She continues on the clinical faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  For the past 5 years she has been an active Board member of the NY Metro chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program. Speaking and writing on health care reform for the past several years\, she is a passionate advocate of an expanded and improved “Medicare for All.” She is a graduate of Smith College and NYU Medical School and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology. She lives in Larchmont with her physician husband\, and they are the parents of three  grown sons. \nArguing against single-payer healthcare: \nBeth Haynes\, MD Executive Director\, Benjamin Rush Institute Previously in private practice with board certification in both Family Practice and Emergency Medicine\, Dr. Beth Haynes has been working full time in healthcare policy for the past six years. She obtained her MD from the University of Cincinnati\, College of Medicine and her residency training at University of Wisconsin in Madison. She also volunteers as an executive board member of the Dr. Joseph Warren Institute and is Founder and President of The Black Ribbon Project. She previously served as Senior Health Policy Analyst and Executive Board Member for Docs4PatientCare\, and as National Co-Chair of Doc Squads\, a project to recruit and train doctors to lead the public healthcare debate. Dr. Haynes has published several op-eds in TownHall.com\, PJ Media\, American Thinker and The Huffington Post. She speaks frequently to citizen and professional groups on healthcare policy\, the ACA\, and the ethics and economics of medicine. \nRaymond Raad\, MD MPH is a general and forensic psychiatrist in private practice in Manhattan.  He received his MD from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and his MPH in health policy from the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health\, and then completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical Center.  He has an interest in health policy\, in particular in international comparison of health and medical systems.  He is co-author of Bending the Productivity Curve: Why America Leads the World in Medical Innovation.  http://www.cato.org/publications/policy-analysis/bending-productivity-curve-why-america-leads-world-medical-innovation \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty people attended the debate\, including four BRI students\, a former BRI leader (now intern) from Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai\, and SUNY-DS who came to support Drs. Raad and Haynes argue against instituting single-payer healthcare in the United States. Given that the majority of the audience came in already supporting single-payer\, the slightly larger gain for the opposition indicates a real victory. The event went quite smoothly\, and and several students expressed interest in BRI. At the post-debate dinner the students brainstormed plans for more events in the NYC area. \nWe are very proud of having won the debate. It was broken down by percentages\, and while the numbers look small\, we are very aware of the fact that in this part of the country most healthcare professionals and students support a single-payer system. \nResolution: The United States should adopt the single payer system.\nIn the Pre-debate vote\, 27% were undecided\, 19% were opposed to single-payer\, and 54% supported single-payer.\nPost-debate\, BRI won due to the shifts in undecided and opposed voters: 24% (-3%) undecided ; 21% (+2%) opposed single-payer; and 55% (+1%) supported single-payer. \nWe are also proud that BRI is becoming so widely recognized that the student organizers from Albert Einstein University reached out to us and invited us to debate this very critical issue.

RSVPs are appreciated for accurate food count. \nDr. Umbehr is traveling from Kansas to speak to the BRI-OUHCOM Chapter about his personalized medicine practice which specializes in “concierge” medicine. This is a new concept for many students\, so it should be interesting to hear what everyone has to say about it. \n“Dr. Josh” Umbehr from Atlas MD\, based in Wichita\, KS\, has been an advocate and practitioner in the DPC model for many years\, and is a frequent speaker at BRI and other free market medicine events. He was a featured speaker at the BRI Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC. Come learn about how Direct Primary Care is changing the patient-physician relationship for the better! \n  \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Sixty students from BRI and Family Medicine Club attended this breakfast lecture — a BRI first!! They clearly enjoyed the food that got them to a 7am presentation! \n \n \nDr. Josh Umbehr from Atlas MD in Wichita\, Kansas came to OU-HCOM to speak to first- and second-year medical students about practicing concierge medicine. This is a topic that was very foreign to our students\, so it was really interesting to hear how Dr. Umbehr deals with the positives and negatives associated with this form of healthcare. \n“It was great to learn about this topic that we don’t know much about.” ~Medical student attendee\, OU-HCOM \nThere were many questions\, but some of the more popular questions centered around how the system works\, how patients like the system\, how Dr. Umbehr is reimbursed\, and how he is able to balance his personal life with his practice. It was amazing to learn about the multiple ways Dr. Umbehr saves his patients money. For a small fee per year for each patient\, and by purchasing his own resources in bulk\, Dr. Umbehr is able to afford effective and preventive healthcare to his patients at an extremely reduced cost. This was a very important point that was stressed throughout his talk\, especially given the enactment of the Affordable Care Act and the goals to cut down on medical waste and overspending. Dr. Umbehr also stayed an hour after his talk to answer individual students’ questions. BRI and the Family Medicine Club co-sponsored the event and provided breakfast for attendees because this was an early morning lecture at 7am. \n“Wow\, Dr. Josh is totally down to earth. It was great to hear his story.” ~Medical student attendee\, OU-HCOM \nDr. Josh Umbehr did a wonderful job of engaging the audience\, especially at 7am in the morning! He was very real and down to earth and was great at informing our students about this foreign type of medical care known as “Concierge Medicine.” It was a great event overall\, and we received positive feedback from many of the attendees. \n

Please share this opportunity to hear about Direct Primary Care (DPC) with fellow students and faculty. RSVPs are appreciated. Lunch will be provided. \nDr. Lisa Davidson of Insight Primary Care will be speaking about the overarching concepts and practice of Direct Primary Care (DPC) in healthcare\, and her personal experiences with it. The mission statement from Dr. Davidson’s website sums up many aspects of direct primary care: “Insight is defined as the capacity for accurate and deep understanding of a person or thing. Our mission is to create a medical home for individuals and families that is easily accessible\, cost-conscious\, encourages collaboration\, and promotes wellness. We welcome everyone to our practice regardless of race\, religion\, culture or sexual identity.” \nIn 2014\, UCDenver\, Anschutz Medical Campus was chosen as the location for Benjamin Rush Institute’s annual Student Leadership Conference. It was an exceptional event\, attended by 29 students from around the country\, and featured a 2-on-2 debate on the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). \nIn keeping with our strong chapter history and reputation\, UCDenver’s BRI Chapter will be looking for energetic and interested students for volunteer officer positions for the academic year 2015-2016\, and the chance to attend next spring’s Student Leadership Conference (location & dates TBA). \nPaid parking is available on the Anschutz Medical Campus; please see this link for more information. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:  Fifteen students attended our 1-hour lunch lecture with Dr. Davidson. She spoke for about 40 minutes about direct primary care in general\, and her experiences specifically with the DPC model. She also provided a great list of resources for students interested in more information. Unexpectedly to me\, she brought a colleague of hers who has worked at another DPC company to give his perspective as well after her talk. We had about 15 minutes for questions at the end of the talk.

The Benjamin Rush Institute Health Policy Interest Group invited Dr. Josh Umbehr from Atlas MD\, based in Wichita\, KS\, to talk about this alternative payment model. \n“Dr. Josh” has been an advocate and practitioner in the DPC model for many years\, and is a frequent speaker at BRI and other free market medicine events. He was a featured speaker at the BRI Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC. \n  \nLinda Pan\, Dr. Josh\, Brennan Wright\, and Nic Miller of OSU\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Sixty students and members of the community came to hear Dr. Josh Umbehr from AtlasMD give an informal presentation about Direct Primary Care. He started off with an explanation of what DPC is and wowed the crowd with the low prices he can get when ordering medications in bulk and contracting for labs. He took questions throughout the presentation from a variety of attendees. Some expressed that they were still skeptical how the DPC model could work and how he could make prices so cheap\, so he explained that aspect of his model again. One audience member was a primary care physician herself\, and asked many informed questions. \n \nAs students started to trickle out about an hour later\, the formal part of the evening ended\, and Dr. Josh stayed around to talk to some remaining people and answer additional questions. \nTESTIMONIAL: ‘I’m completely sold on DPC. SUMMARY:State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate College of Medicine: Lecture — The History of Government in US Medicine
DESCRIPTION:ALL are welcome to attend a lecture by Dr. Beth Haynes\, Executive Director of Benjamin Rush Institute on the history of government in US medicine. Government involvement in medicine is not a new thing\, and policies from the past are currently influencing the healthcare climate today. In what ways are government policies in healthcare beneficial\, and in what ways detrimental? And what can be done? \nFood will be served with generous donations from Med Council and University Council. RSVPs are greatly appreciated in order to have enough for all. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty students attended our lunch lecture on US healthcare. Dr. Haynes provided a very interesting talk about the history of government involvement in medicine dating back to the 19th century. She described the regulations that have increased over the years\, their benefits\, and even more importantly\, their unintended consequences. She explained how well-intended regulations on healthcare providers\, insurers\, and the marketplace as a whole\, has unintentionally increased costs while stifling innovation. She also discussed some solutions about how to help the medical field flourish so that we can achieve better quality of care for all. She then had a ten minute Q & A session. The talk was very well received. \n“The event went very well and I was very pleased. The environment at Downstate can at times be somewhat hostile towards solutions that do not hinge on government intervention. However\, there was a great deal of “head nodding” throughout Dr. Haynes’ talk\, and several interested students remained afterward to ask Dr. Haynes more questions. Several fellow students said they were very pleased and are looking forward to the next event.” ~Mary Hahn\, BRI-SUNY Downstate president and event organizer \nSeveral students were very interested and asked for BRI video links to Dr. Haynes’ previous talk about the subject. Many found this information very interesting\, but didn’t have a great deal of background in the subject matter\, and would like to watch or listen again so that it could “fully sink in.” Others added that these talks are a fantastic source of information for our class\, and they hope we will have more talks like this. \nTESTIMONIAL:\n“That talk was great! He is then going to tie it into healthcare insurance costs. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty (20) interested medical students came to BRI-OSU’s lunch lecture to hear about healthcare economics\, presented by fellow student\, Suyang Li. \n \n \nHave you ever wondered about what drives healthcare costs? At our event\, Suyang Li taught fellow students about the economics driving the cost of healthcare insurance. The Benjamin Rush Institute Health Policy Interest Group invited this member of our medical class to talk about the economics of healthcare\, their burden\, and possible solutions! Food and refreshments were provided for attendees. \nDuring the event Suyang was able to engage the audience through an interactive presentation that allowed students to think through the impact of different economic policies. He was able to deliver a fundamental lecture on macroeconomics before shifting the focus to health management for students who had a shallow economics background. \n“The event went very well and exceeded expectations with regard to turnout. It seemed like students enjoyed the lecture and got a lot out of it and attendance seems to be rising at the BRI events.” ~Mit Shah\, BRI-OSU chapter \n

DESCRIPTION:Why We Can’t Fix Healthcare Until We Know What Health Insurance Is and Is Not\nAll are welcome to attend this free evening lecture sponsored by BRI and East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP). Click here to register\, or on the green Registration button\, above right. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, BRI executive director will discuss the importance of understanding the role and limitations of health insurance. She will detail how improper understanding of insurance leads to poor health outcomes. For each attendee\, $5 will be donated to Mount Sinai’s student run health clinic. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Mount Sinai BRI and EHHOP together drew an audience of 20 students to this lunch lecture on the idea of health insurance for medical students. The event was focused on how exactly health insurance as we currently know it is structured\, and how that differs from other forms of insurance that we encounter in life such as auto or home insurance. Dr. Haynes discussed several terms that are commonly used when discussing insurance for the benefit of the audience. The main point was the health insurance is not exactly insurance\, but rather “prepaid healthcare.” Dr. Haynes went into further detail about how viewing health insurance as traditional “insurance” is harmful and unsustainable\, and how recent legislation has only served to exacerbate this problem. \nAfter the presentation\, students asked several insightful questions and created a floor for discussion about the issues that were raised. The event also raised $100 for EHHOP\, the student-run clinic to help the uninsured\, as BRI pledged $5 donation for each student attendee. During the event\, Insomnia cookies and milk were served.

For several of the students it was an heretofore unexplored issue. Dr. Beth Haynes gave an excellent presentation on how healthcare markets benefit the poor. DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: Fighting Poverty is Big Business; but who profits the most?\n \nThe entire Dartmouth community is invited to join us on Tuesday December 15th at 6pm for dinner and a free showing of the new\, award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc.\, hosted by the TDI/Geisel Critical Issues Discussion Group. \nThe number of people existing on less than $2 a day has been reduced by 80% since 1970. This astounding accomplishment is not the result of foreign aid\, or any other type of wealth redistribution. Development economists credit free enterprise and the rule of law with the lifting of 2 billion human beings out of absolute poverty. And as these people become wealthier\, they also become healthier. \nWhat can we learn from this accomplishment that we can apply to the US? Join us to see one side of the story you may not have thought about before. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twelve very interested students attended the full movie version screening\, with a half hour of discussion and Q&A following. \nJared Rhoads of Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine\, had this to say about his event:\n“Hosting a movie night is a great idea for a BRI chapter event that is relatively easy to organize\, yet still impactful. The film offers a critical look at humanitarian aid efforts\, strongly but subtly arguing that markets and political freedom are often more effective at helping people rise out of poverty and achieve prosperity than plain charity. The film does not focus specifically on health\, but it was nevertheless a perfect selection for our public health students\, who were in the middle of their fall semester course on the social determinants of health.”

DESCRIPTION:Direct Primary Care Business Model\, with Dr. Josh Umbehr\n Dr. Josh Umbehr addresses the BRI Student Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC.[/caption] \nDr. Umbehr will talk to students about his direct primary care business model during a lunch meeting. RSVP is not required. The plan is to give students exposure to and a better understanding of direct primary care. This will prepare them for the ensuing debate that evening about the single-payer health care model. Food provided for this event is generously funded by the Family Medicine Interest Group. Thank you! \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-two students attended a pre-debate lunch lecture—with food generously provided by the Family Medicine Interest Group—featuring Dr. Josh Umbehr. Dr. Umbehr gave a brief introduction to direct primary care and how much value AtlasMD brings to their patients. When students asked how the cost savings were possible\, Dr. Josh clarified that he does not work with insurance and that many of the methods he ueses to save his patients money are available to all physicians. For example\, most states allow physicians to buy pharmaceuticals wholesale and sell them to their patients. Dr. Josh did emphasize\, however\, that direct primary care is not a replacement for insurance; catastrophic insurance is still recommended. \n“This was our most well attended lunch meeting and was received very well! There was a completely full room; more students showed up than we expected. The students loved Dr. Josh and had many great questions!” ~John Flo\, BRI-SLU chapter president \nMore students than expected showed up\, and the Q&A segment went all the way to the end of our official reservation time. One student asked what the downside to the direct primary care model is\, because it sounded so good. Dr. Josh answered that while the lifestyle of an AtlasMD physician is fantastic\, there is risk for abuse when giving patients full access to you as a physician. You have to put in the hours to work with these patients who may call excessively\, but in this model\, you’re actually able to do it! \n“I can see how this business model would work really well for primary care. I thought Dr. Josh’s presentation was very well done. I’m still confused about how he can get drugs for so cheap.” ~SLU student attendee\n\n“Dr. Umbehr gave the best 45 minute lunch discussion in the history of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine! I really enjoyed the description of how he has built his practice\, Atlas MD\, into a well-known direct primary care provider. I believe his methods are the most affordable and pragmatic for the future of healthcare in the United States.” ~SLU student attendee \nOverall\, students were very intrigued by the direct primary care model\, which many of them had not heard of before. A few students stayed after to ask Dr. Josh even more questions.

DESCRIPTION:BE IT RESOLVED: Single-payer is an effective way to reduce cost and improve healthcare outcomes.\nThis will be a debate between Dr. Ed Weisbart\, Chair of Missouri | Physicians for a National Health Plan (PHNP)\, and Dr. Josh Umbehr\, founder of AtlasMD\, on what provides the most effective ways to reduce costs and improve healthcare outcomes: a single-payer healthcare system\, or other solutions based on the free market. \nDr. Weisbart will be arguing the affirmative\, supporting a single-payer system. \n  \n  \nDr. Umbehr will be arguing in opposition\, against a single-payer system. \n  \n  \n \nModerator: Dr. Kamal Gursahani \nAssociate Professor of Surgery\nDirector of Operations\, Emergency Department\nFellow\, Bander Center of Medical Ethics \n  \nDr. Gursahani\, Dr. Weisbart\, Dr. Umbehr and members of the BRI-SLU chapter\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty-three medical students from SLU and Washington University at St. Louis (SLU’s college for public health and social justice)\, local physicians\, and members of the general public showed up on a Friday night to watch SLU’s debate over the pros and cons of single payer healthcare\, featuring a physician entrepreneur who believes in individual and direct payments for healthcare\, Dr. Josh Umbehr of AtlasMD\, and a physician expert in large\, centralized planning\, Dr. Ed Weisbart. \nDr. Ed Weisbart and Dr. Josh Umbehr and all our wonderful sponsor!\nThe debate started out calm as Dr. Weisbart delivered his well-organized powerpoint presentation on single payer benefits. Dr. Umbehr responded quickly by pointing out the inherent flaws in central planning and the  fallacies in logic that single payer supporters use. As the debate progressed\, intensity grew\, getting the whole audience involved\, and we ran out of time for all attendees’ questions. Pre- and post-debate voting showed a shift in opinion from supporting single payer to opposing it. \n“It was highly informative. Both speakers were very well prepared and presented information that was new to me. The free market and single payer approaches both have the same goals in mind for the health care system but use very different means to achieve those goals. In the end\, I believe Dr. Josh offered a free market system that was entirely novel to many of the listeners and thus intrigued the many students who intend to practice primary care medicine in the future.” ~Debate attendee\, name withheld \n“I really liked hearing … certain aspects of the debate; I had heard over and over that infant mortality rate was high in the US\, but was unaware the US used a broader definition than other countries reporting the same statistic. However\, I felt like Dr Josh didn’t honestly go debate against a “single payer” system\, but mostly attacked the idea of a socialist medical program instead.” ~Debate attendee \nDr. Ed Weisbart addresses attendees at SLU’s debate on single payer healthcare.\nAfter the debate\, Dr. Umbehr joined most of the BRI officers for dinner at Mangia Italiano. The new officers took the opportunity to ask more questions and discuss their plans for the coming year. \n“Thanks for arranging a great debate. I am really interested in health care policy and what our options as a country are\, since things are changing so much right now. I feel that as a future physician it is my responsibility to be educated on the topic\, so these lectures and the debate were extremely interesting. I think the quality of the debaters was phenomenal and I learned a lot about the different options and thought processes out there. I would love to learn even more and delve even deeper into the options presented.” ~Debate attendee\n \nOfficial voting\nPre-debate (43 responses): 55.8% agree with the resolution\, but only 39% thought the USA should have single payer healthcare.\nPost-debate (25 responses): 48% agree with the resolution\, and 32% think the USA should have single payer.\nThe debate resolution opposition (free market) won the debate based on these voting statistics.

It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. We will also be discussing Benjamin Rush Institute\, why we have a Chapter at OSUMC\, and what the benefits of membership are. \nAll are welcome\, and RSVPs are appreciated to ensure enough refreshments for all. \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-three students attended this event that was centered around the screening of “Poverty Inc.” over lunch. A discussion was held following the film screening to relate the theme of the film to healthcare.
