SUMMARY:Stony Brook School of Medicine: Lecture — How Markets Benefit the Poor
DESCRIPTION:How Markets Help the Poor\nAll are welcome to attend this FREE lunch lecture with Dr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of BRI. Dr. Haynes has studied and lectured extensively on this topic. Citing historical data and modern examples\, she clarifies why BRI’s position is that free enterprise\, more than any other approach\, is the best way to ensure the most optimal outcomes for the most people\, at the lowest prices and highest quality. \nPlease read her blog post: To advocate for free markets is to advocate for the poor \nValet parking is available. We look forward to seeing you here! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Six students attended the lecture\, asking interesting questions and engaging with the topic of free enterprise as it relates to the poor. For several of the students it was an heretofore unexplored issue. Dr. Beth Haynes gave an excellent presentation on how healthcare markets benefit the poor. In the post-presentation discussion there ensued an interesting exchange on the wisdom of government anti-smoking efforts\, and the unseen consequences that could result from such “good-intentioned” policies. \n“This was a unique event as there haven’t really been any talks this entire year devoted to healthcare policy.” ~Daniel Milyavsky\, BRI-Stony Brook president

SUMMARY:Rowan School Of Osteopathic Medicine: Lecture — History of government in US medicine
DESCRIPTION:History of government in US medicine\n  \nPlease join us for a FREE lunch lecture\, featuring Dr. Beth Haynes\, executive director of Benjamin Rush Institute. This is an opportunity for students to learn the role of government in American medicine throughout history\, and what brought us to this juncture. \nIn addition\, students will learn about various types of medical practices that are being developed to address inefficiencies in our current healthcare system. \nFood will be served. Please RSVP so that we can have enough for all. \n  \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Fifty students attended this presentation by Dr.Beth Haynes on the history of government in US healthcare. Dr. Haynes provided students a perspective on the cause and effect of increasing involvement of the government in US healthcare. At the end of the presentation\, the event transitioned into a Q&A and discussion about the current state of healthcare\, including the question of how much involvement is necessary\, and what\, if any\, regulatory bodies should be involved and their roles. \n“The event went better than expected. Attendance was more than expected and many students were amazed at how little they knew about the topic. Overall everyone enjoyed the presentation and discussion afterwards.” ~Nishant Parikh\, Rowan\, BRI affiliate \n“BRI events are always fun and mentally stimulating. In addition\, they encourage medical students to explore different aspects of healthcare that often go unnoticed by physicians.” ~Event attendee\, Rowan University \n

SUMMARY:Dartmouth College\, Geisel School of Medicine: Movie Screening — Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: Fighting Poverty is Big Business; but who profits the most?\n \nThe entire Dartmouth community is invited to join us on Tuesday December 15th at 6pm for dinner and a free showing of the new\, award-winning documentary Poverty\, Inc.\, hosted by the TDI/Geisel Critical Issues Discussion Group. \nThe number of people existing on less than $2 a day has been reduced by 80% since 1970. This astounding accomplishment is not the result of foreign aid\, or any other type of wealth redistribution. Development economists credit free enterprise and the rule of law with the lifting of 2 billion human beings out of absolute poverty. And as these people become wealthier\, they also become healthier. \nWhat can we learn from this accomplishment that we can apply to the US? Join us to see one side of the story you may not have thought about before. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twelve very interested students attended the full movie version screening\, with a half hour of discussion and Q&A following. \nJared Rhoads of Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine\, had this to say about his event:\n“Hosting a movie night is a great idea for a BRI chapter event that is relatively easy to organize\, yet still impactful. The film offers a critical look at humanitarian aid efforts\, strongly but subtly arguing that markets and political freedom are often more effective at helping people rise out of poverty and achieve prosperity than plain charity. The film does not focus specifically on health\, but it was nevertheless a perfect selection for our public health students\, who were in the middle of their fall semester course on the social determinants of health.”

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine—LUNCH LECTURE: Direct Primary Care Business Model with Dr. Josh Umbehr
DESCRIPTION:Direct Primary Care Business Model\, with Dr. Josh Umbehr\n Dr. Josh Umbehr addresses the BRI Student Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington\, DC.[/caption] \nDr. Umbehr will talk to students about his direct primary care business model during a lunch meeting. RSVP is not required. The plan is to give students exposure to and a better understanding of direct primary care. This will prepare them for the ensuing debate that evening about the single-payer health care model. Food provided for this event is generously funded by the Family Medicine Interest Group. Thank you! \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-two students attended a pre-debate lunch lecture—with food generously provided by the Family Medicine Interest Group—featuring Dr. Josh Umbehr. Dr. Umbehr gave a brief introduction to direct primary care and how much value AtlasMD brings to their patients. When students asked how the cost savings were possible\, Dr. Josh clarified that he does not work with insurance and that many of the methods he ueses to save his patients money are available to all physicians. For example\, most states allow physicians to buy pharmaceuticals wholesale and sell them to their patients. Dr. Josh did emphasize\, however\, that direct primary care is not a replacement for insurance; catastrophic insurance is still recommended. \n“This was our most well attended lunch meeting and was received very well! There was a completely full room; more students showed up than we expected. The students loved Dr. Josh and had many great questions!” ~John Flo\, BRI-SLU chapter president \nMore students than expected showed up\, and the Q&A segment went all the way to the end of our official reservation time. One student asked what the downside to the direct primary care model is\, because it sounded so good. Dr. Josh answered that while the lifestyle of an AtlasMD physician is fantastic\, there is risk for abuse when giving patients full access to you as a physician. You have to put in the hours to work with these patients who may call excessively\, but in this model\, you’re actually able to do it! \n“I can see how this business model would work really well for primary care. I thought Dr. Josh’s presentation was very well done. I’m still confused about how he can get drugs for so cheap.” ~SLU student attendee\n\n“Dr. Umbehr gave the best 45 minute lunch discussion in the history of the Saint Louis University School of Medicine! I really enjoyed the description of how he has built his practice\, Atlas MD\, into a well-known direct primary care provider. I believe his methods are the most affordable and pragmatic for the future of healthcare in the United States.” ~SLU student attendee \nOverall\, students were very intrigued by the direct primary care model\, which many of them had not heard of before. A few students stayed after to ask Dr. Josh even more questions.

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine—DEBATE: Single-Payer Healthcare v. Free Market Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:BE IT RESOLVED: Single-payer is an effective way to reduce cost and improve healthcare outcomes.\nThis will be a debate between Dr. Ed Weisbart\, Chair of Missouri | Physicians for a National Health Plan (PHNP)\, and Dr. Josh Umbehr\, founder of AtlasMD\, on what provides the most effective ways to reduce costs and improve healthcare outcomes: a single-payer healthcare system\, or other solutions based on the free market. \nDr. Weisbart will be arguing the affirmative\, supporting a single-payer system. \n  \n  \nDr. Umbehr will be arguing in opposition\, against a single-payer system. \n  \n  \n \nModerator: Dr. Kamal Gursahani \nAssociate Professor of Surgery\nDirector of Operations\, Emergency Department\nFellow\, Bander Center of Medical Ethics \n  \nDr. Gursahani\, Dr. Weisbart\, Dr. Umbehr and members of the BRI-SLU chapter\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Forty-three medical students from SLU and Washington University at St. Louis (SLU’s college for public health and social justice)\, local physicians\, and members of the general public showed up on a Friday night to watch SLU’s debate over the pros and cons of single payer healthcare\, featuring a physician entrepreneur who believes in individual and direct payments for healthcare\, Dr. Josh Umbehr of AtlasMD\, and a physician expert in large\, centralized planning\, Dr. Ed Weisbart. \nDr. Ed Weisbart and Dr. Josh Umbehr and all our wonderful sponsor!\nThe debate started out calm as Dr. Weisbart delivered his well-organized powerpoint presentation on single payer benefits. Dr. Umbehr responded quickly by pointing out the inherent flaws in central planning and the  fallacies in logic that single payer supporters use. As the debate progressed\, intensity grew\, getting the whole audience involved\, and we ran out of time for all attendees’ questions. Pre- and post-debate voting showed a shift in opinion from supporting single payer to opposing it. \n“It was highly informative. Both speakers were very well prepared and presented information that was new to me. The free market and single payer approaches both have the same goals in mind for the health care system but use very different means to achieve those goals. In the end\, I believe Dr. Josh offered a free market system that was entirely novel to many of the listeners and thus intrigued the many students who intend to practice primary care medicine in the future.” ~Debate attendee\, name withheld \n“I really liked hearing … certain aspects of the debate; I had heard over and over that infant mortality rate was high in the US\, but was unaware the US used a broader definition than other countries reporting the same statistic. However\, I felt like Dr Josh didn’t honestly go debate against a “single payer” system\, but mostly attacked the idea of a socialist medical program instead.” ~Debate attendee \nDr. Ed Weisbart addresses attendees at SLU’s debate on single payer healthcare.\nAfter the debate\, Dr. Umbehr joined most of the BRI officers for dinner at Mangia Italiano. The new officers took the opportunity to ask more questions and discuss their plans for the coming year. \n“Thanks for arranging a great debate. I am really interested in health care policy and what our options as a country are\, since things are changing so much right now. I feel that as a future physician it is my responsibility to be educated on the topic\, so these lectures and the debate were extremely interesting. I think the quality of the debaters was phenomenal and I learned a lot about the different options and thought processes out there. I would love to learn even more and delve even deeper into the options presented.” ~Debate attendee\n \nOfficial voting\nPre-debate (43 responses): 55.8% agree with the resolution\, but only 39% thought the USA should have single payer healthcare.\nPost-debate (25 responses): 48% agree with the resolution\, and 32% think the USA should have single payer.\nThe debate resolution opposition (free market) won the debate based on these voting statistics.

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University College of Medicine: BRI Intro Meeting & Movie Screening — Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc. — The Movie\nThe OSUMC BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty of the School of Medicine. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. We will also be discussing Benjamin Rush Institute\, why we have a Chapter at OSUMC\, and what the benefits of membership are. \nAll are welcome\, and RSVPs are appreciated to ensure enough refreshments for all. \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-three students attended this event that was centered around the screening of “Poverty Inc.” over lunch. A discussion was held following the film screening to relate the theme of the film to healthcare.

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n \nThe Student National Medical Association\, the Emergency Medicine Interest Group and Benjamin Rush Institute invite you to enjoy some food and beverages while screening CODE BLACK\, a documentary offering a tense\, doctor’s-eye view right into the heart of the healthcare debate—bringing us face to face with young doctors-in-training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened system. \nThe full-length screening event will feature a panel discussion after the film with BRI executive director\, Dr. Beth Haynes\, and Michael Seitzman\, producer of the CBS show based off of this documentary. Seating is limited\, so be sure to RSVP early by clicking on the green “Register” link\, above right. \n  \nTo learn more about Code Black:\nTrailer\nSynopsis \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: The Student National Medical Association\, the Emergency Medicine Interest Group and the Benjamin Rush Institute screened the documentary CODE BLACK before an audience of 65 interested students and faculty. CODE BLACK offers a tense\, doctor’s-eye view\, right into the heart of the healthcare debate — bringing us face to face with young doctors-in-training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened system.\nThe screening event featured the full-length film as well as panel discussion after the film featuring Executive Director of BRI Dr. Beth Haynes\, and Dr. Joel Strom D.D.S.\nThe students\, faculty and undergraduates in attendance were very appreciative of the event as they were able to ask some difficult questions concerning the healthcare crisis. \n“This was my third time watching the documentary and I’d forgotten how much it shakes me up every time. Many problems were presented and leaders of our county\, state and federal offices know that those problems exist. However\, the big question\, as Dr. Beth Haynes stated\, is not how the current is flowing but rather what is pushing the current.”\nCarina Mireles-Romo\nUC Irvine School of Medicine\nPostbaccalaureate Student \n“This was my first time watching this documentary and it was an eye opener. Before this event\, I had dabbled with the idea of possibly doing a MPH degree in addition to medical school\, but after watching this documentary and listening to Dr. Haynes\, I truly believe that is the only way to bring about change in the medical field and continue to provide care. As Dr. Haynes put it\, “When you pull out a body from the river ask not only what you can do to help that patient\, but also what put that patient in the river in the first place.”\nLila Peltekian\nUC Irvine School of Medicine\nPostbaccalaureate Student \n“Yesterday was such a proud moment for me. In collaboration with the Benjamin Rush Institute and the Emergency Medicine Interest Group\, the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) screened an incredibly impactful documentary titled ‘Code Black’. It challenged us to analyze the role the government plays in health and how bureaucratic issues gets in the way of treating patients. It made me fall even more in love with emergency medicine as a field and pulled at my heart strings that are tied to the underserved. I’m proud of us\, Thao and Faith and I’m so happy we could bring diverse and knowledgable perspectives to the discussion about healthcare.”\nKelley Butler\nUC Irvine School of Medicine MS1

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—INTERVIEW: Dr. Keith Smith via Skype
DESCRIPTION:Find out about Direct Pay medical delivery from a successful doctor!\nDr. Keith Smith\, co-founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma\, a Direct Pay surgery center\, with BRI students\nWe are excited to educate our fellow medical students about the direct pay medical model. Dr. Smith will talk about the Surgery Center of Oklahoma that he co-founded\, how the idea was born and brought to reality\, what his income model is\, and how direct pay works. \nAll are welcome to join BRI-Marian University chapter and the Student Osteopathic Surgery Association (SOSA) for a unique Skype interview with Dr. Keith Smith. Dr. Keith Smith is a pioneer in direct pay medical delivery—in this case surgery! He runs one of the most successful surgery centers in America\, and people travel from across the nation to get world class surgery at a fraction of an equivalent hospital surgery. \nDr. Smith is very generous with his knowledge and expertise and will be happy to answer questions from the audience. \nPlease RSVP so that we can ensure enough refreshments for all. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Seven (7) students joined us over pizza\, snacks and soft drinks for a long-distance Skype interview with long-time BRI friend and supporter\, Dr. Keith Smith\, co-founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. Dr. Smith discussed why he started his surgery center\, how they successfully compete with hospitals and other surgery centers. the benefits of the free market in healthcare\, and how it increases quality of care and decreases costs. At the end\, Dr. Smith talked about how there is a bright future for medical students because the free market is starting to take a stronghold in medicine. \nDr. David Hormuth\, MUCOM’s Chair of Surgery and Clerkships\, attended and had nothing but good things to say when Dr. Smith finished talking. \nAfter the talk\, my colleagues and I talked another 30 mins on how this message resonants with so many of our student colleagues. \n“I was not sure what attendance numbers to expect for the lecture. It would have been nice to see a few more people; but overall\, it ended up being a great size that allowed participation from all the students. Afterward\, attendees reporting having had a good time\, and it was a good way to promote BRI’s values. I thought the event turned out great.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian president

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University School of Medicine — Film screening: Poverty\, Inc.
DESCRIPTION:Our chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty of the School of Medicine. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. All are welcome\, and RSVPs are appreciated to ensure enough refreshments. If you are an SLU member\, please click on the green Register button above right; otherwise please email Eric Sink\, above. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirteen (13) students joined BRI-SLU for dinner and a screening of the documentary film Poverty\, Inc. on a Wednesday afternoon. Attendees stayed after the documentary for a discussion. Students enjoyed the documentary. They made connections between the international “poverty industry” and our local community in St. Louis\, MO. Some also gave constructive criticism/comments on the documentary. For example\, one student mentioned that it would have been interesting to see how a country like Japan successfully recovered from war without having to be tied indefinitely to the poverty industry.

SUMMARY:Saint Louis University—PANEL: Comparing Healthcare Policies in an Election Year
DESCRIPTION:What exact healthcare policies are the 2016 presidential candidates proposing?\nPlease join us for lunch and refreshments as BRI officers present the various 2016 presidential candidates’ healthcare policies and plans. A Q&A and small group discussion will follow. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Three SLU-BRI chapter officers\, Alex Wisbeck\, Erick Sink\, and Kevin Huynh presented the 2016 Republican and Democratic presidential candidates’ healthcare plans to 28 mostly first year medical school attendees at this pizza lunch meeting. The presentation lasted 30 minutes\, which left 20 minutes for questions. \nFellow students were interested in the presentation\, and as a result we had quite a few questions about the candidates’ specific policies and also about healthcare policy in general. \n“I thought that this lunch discussion went very well. My fellow junior officers and I learned a bit while researching the candidates. Also\, because we left a lot of time for questions and because our presentation was delivered as peers and not as an expert panel\, we felt that many more questions were asked and elaborated upon. I think this type of set up facilitates discussions with medical students\, especially those who are relatively new to topics in healthcare policy and may be hesitant to speak up in other settings.” ~Kevin Huynh\, presenter and BRI chapter officer

SUMMARY:Medical College of Wisconsin — BRI/AMA Journal Club: Monthly Meeting of the Minds
DESCRIPTION:Forty-five (45) students joined us for MCW’s BRI/AMA joint Journal Club’s “Monthly Meeting of the Minds.” This month’s theme was “The Basics of Healthcare Finances Every Doctor Should Know.” \nDuring February’s BRI/AMA Journal Club lunch talk we tailored our presentation specifically for an area many medical students don’t learn about. While medical students learn the ins and outs of scientific medicine\, they are given little to no education on the financial aspects involved with medicine. Therefore\, BRI at MCW decided to give a “crash course” presentation outlining all of the various payment options and plans in the American healthcare system today. Lunch was provided to those who attended. \nThis event was successful compared to our previous journal club talks. Joel Lange\, 2016-2017 BRI Journal Club Chair\, was very informative and engaging\, and students were active and participating in lively discussions.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine—LECTURE: Dr. Jason Eberl\, Foundation for a Natural Right to Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Marian University’s BRI chapter cordially invites you to attend a lecture with Dr. Jason Eberl\, a Marian University faculty member. Dr. Eberl will be making the case for a natural right to health and healthcare—opening discussion of the question to what extent the state\, versus society in general\, is the guarantor of this right. \nDr. Jason Eberl\nFrom Dr. Eberl’s webpage: \n“I primarily conduct research concerning the implications of Thomas Aquinas’s metaphysical account of human personhood and natural law ethics to various issues in bioethics. I also have interests in philosophy of religion\, virtue ethics\, and philosophy of mind. I graduated with my Ph.D. from Saint Louis University….more \nPlease RSVP to ensure enough food and refreshments for all. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: An intimate group of six (6) students got to hear Dr. Eberl’s personalized lecture on a natural right o healthcare. Dr. Jason Eberl\, Semler Endowed Chair for Medical Ethics at MUCOM\, talked about his research and the healthcare proposal he wrote for the state of Indiana in the early 2000’s. Because it was a smaller group\, we discussed our views about whether we considered health and healthcare a natural right. We also talked about the problems of translating ethics into policy. It was a great talk\, and the all the people that attend enjoyed what was discussed.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine: LECTURE — Dr. Patch Adams on the doctor-patient relationship
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Patch Adams on the Doctor-Patient Relationship\nDr. Patch Adams\nNote: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Food will be provided. RSVPs are greatly appreciated. The Theater will be full! \nIn partnership with the Arnold P. Gold Foundation\, Marian University center for Organizational Ethics\, and the Marian University office of Institutional Advancement\, BRI student leaders from Marian University are proud to present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the celebrated Dr. Patch Adams. Dr. Adams\, noted doctor (he got into medical school without an undergraduate degree!)\, comedian\, humanitarian\, social activist\, and subject of the film Patch Adams with Robin Williams\, will speak about himself\, the doctor-patient relationship\, and how he believes the doctor-patient relationship should be experienced. \nPatch Adams speaks at a co-sponsored BRI event before over 500 people.\nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Over 500 people came to the Wheeler-Stokely Mansion — and even filled an overflow room! — on the Marian University campus to hear a lively and entertaining talk by Dr. “Patch” Adams. He spoke about “The Joy of Caring.” Patch started off talking about how he came to be a doctor and the Gesundheit! Institute he started early in his career. The clinic that he started with two other doctors was free for all patients\, and the patients could stay for as long as they wanted. The stipulation was that they had to help do work while at the clinic and participate in different activities. \nHe then talked about various problems in healthcare currently\, including problems with education\, how hospitals are run\, burdensome insurance companies\, physician burnout\, and views on mental illness in society. \n“The event was a great success. Researching Dr. Patch Adams before the event I knew there were things on which he and BRI would disagree. With that said\, there were many things he and BRI would completely agree on. Ultimately\, we both have the same end goal in mind: improving the doctor-patient relationship.” ~Trenton Schmale\, president BRI-Marian \nDr. Patch Adams\nDr. Adams finished with ways physicians can prevent burnout. His main ideas behind it all included improving the doctor-patient relationship. Some of his examples were: love all your patients (build friendships with them)\, consider yourself a hero through your acts of care for your patients (builds self-esteem)\, being real with your faith (actually doing what God wants you to do)\, doing good things leads to good things in return (karma)\, using your brain to think of solutions to problems (eg. his solution to the broken healthcare system). \nHis talk was very insightful\, and I think it’s safe to say all the attendees really enjoyed listening to him. After his presentation\, we held a post event reception and book signing. About 200 people attended this part of the evening. \n  \nPhoto credits Chad Curtis and Jeremy Vollmer\, executive event producer\, Savahannah Lien\, all BRI-Marian chapter leaders. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chicago Medical School @ RFUMS — LECTURE: The Effects of Healthcare Policy on the Patient-Provider Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Dr. David Ansell on healthcare policy and the patient-provider relationship\nHealthcare Policy and the Patient-Provider Relationship\nJoin the Chicago Medical School BRI chapter for a lunch lecture with David A. Ansell\, MD\, MPH. Dr. Ansell draws upon his considerable experience in urban healthcare to illustrate the ways in which US health policy affects the relationship healthcare providers have with their patients. His talk will hopefully open the eyes of future healthcare providers to the problems facing our health system today\, and provide them a base from which they can find their own voice in addressing those issues as their careers progress. \nFrom Dr. Ansell’s bio: Dr. David Ansell is an Internal Medicine physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago\, Illinois. His work with others on the problem of patient dumping brought national attention to this issue and resulted in landmark national legislation to end this practice. In 1995\, Dr. Ansell moved to Chicago’s Sinai Health System\, the State of Illinois’ largest private provider of indigent care and one of the foremost safety-net health systems in the U.S.\, as the Chairperson of Internal Medicine. At Sinai\, he was responsible for the creation of the Sinai Urban Health Institute\, which has become one of the nation’s leading centers for research and interventions to understand and eliminate health inequities.  \nRead more about Dr. Ansell. \nThis event takes place in the CENTRAL TIME ZONE. Please park in the North Parking Lot and enter at the North Auditorium Entrance. We will be serving lunch refreshments. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-one students attended this fascinating and inspiring presentation. Dr. Ansell opened his talk by speaking at length about his personal experience as a resident of Cook County Hospital in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He encountered nearly unfathomable (by today’s standards) levels of patient neglect and racial and socioeconomic disparity\, which helped to shape his career and caused him to become a champion for THE undeserved and neglected populations in Chicago. \nDr. Ansell shared his hope that future healthcare providers will not rest and simply accept the status quo\, but will make activism for patient rights a core part of their future practice. He urged us to keep our eyes and our hearts open and to never forget that medicine is about treating people – no matter their background\, race\, affluence\, or any other societal category. He reminded us that it is our duty to seek alternatives to the current healthcare model that will bring more equitable care\, more affordable care\, and better quality care to people of all walks of life. To simply work as a cog in the machine without thought to the why and the how of our patient care efforts is unconscionable. \n“I thought Dr. Ansell’s talk exceeded expectations. I was initially worried because Dr. Ansell is a prominent voice for a national health program and I anticipated that there could be some commentary that would be at odds with the stated mission of BRI. However\, Dr. Ansell did not make his opinion regarding how to address the issues we discussed a prominent part of his presentation; in fact\, his stance on the future of healthcare policy only came out during the question and discussion portion of the event. He spent much more time turning the narrative toward what we as individuals could begin to do now to address disparity and inequity\, rather than opining on our country’s future direction in healthcare.” ~Theodore Peterson\, BRI-Chicago Medical School at RFUMS chapter president \n  \nTESTIMONIALS from Chicago Medical School at RFUMS: \n“I felt like [Dr. Ansell is] speaking directly to and about my family and me.”\n“I often feel discouraged about our healthcare system\, but [Dr. Ansell’s] talk was uplifting and encouraging.” \n“It is so nice to know that there are physicians out there who make activism and patients’ rights a central part of their practice.” \n

SUMMARY:4th Annual BRI Leadership Conference: Doctors as Leaders\, Doctors as Advocates
DESCRIPTION:  \nBRI is proud to be partnering with American Enterprise Institute to bring you  \n\nBRI Leadership Conference 2016\n  \n  \n  \nDoctors as Leaders\, Doctors as Advocates\n  \nWhy did you decide to become a doctor? \nDo you say that you want to help people in a meaningful way that also is personally challenging? We think that’s a great description of what it means to practice medicine. What can be better than the excitement of really cool applied science\, the challenge of life-long professional growth (there’s always something new to learn)\, and—most importantly\, the privilege of caring for people through some of the most joyous and tragic events of their lives? \nAs doctors\, we are privy to life’s most powerful and intimate moments . . . watching a child be born . . . holding the hand of a dying patient . . . listening to the struggles of living with a chronic disease . . . the look of relief and gratitude after a successful surgery. \nAnd let’s not forget the incredible experience of working as part of dedicated team — in our offices\, hospitals\, charity clinics\, and medical missions. \nYes\, being a doctor in America is a great vocation. \nYet\, American medicine is at a crossroads. Concern over access\, quality\, and affordability have many turning to government to supply solutions — at the risk of impeding innovation\, burying physicians in burdensome regulations\, ratcheting back pay\, interjecting bureaucratic mandates that get between doctors and their patients\, and reducing a doctor’s ability to practice medicine according to his or her own experience\, judgement and skills. \nAt BRI\, we declare that there exists a need to reinvent physician leadership in an age of teamwork. There is an urgency for doctors to be stronger\, more vocal leaders\, not only among medical colleagues\, but in the wider community. There’s a very real need for a new kind of doctor\, as a leader and advocate for those who have been priced out of affordable medical care. That means physicians need to understand economics to be able to advocate effectively for policies that produce lasting improvements for everyone\, not ones that simply make us “feel good.” \nThis will require a new kind of doctor—one who not only practices medical excellence\, but who also adds a voice of leadership so desperately needed in today’s healthcare climate. \nThat’s what this year’s conference is all about: Earned leadership\, with non-paternalistic\, informed compassion and effective advocacy. \n2016-03-22 BRI-AEI Agenda FINAL \nTHIS EVENT IS CLOSED. If you are interested in ATTENDING NEXT YEAR’S conference\, please contact Dr. Beth Haynes at HaynesBE@gmail.com\, or Charlotte Monte at CCMonte@gmail.com. \nIf you are interested in SUPPORTING deserving students to attend the conference\, please click here. Thank you. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: For a full description about BRI’s most successful leadership conference to date\, please see Dr. Haynes’s blog post\, here.

DESCRIPTION:Be it resolved: Providing quality healthcare to the poor is best achieved through free markets and charity\, not government programs\nArguably the most important question in America’s current debate about healthcare is: Who can deliver the best results for the most people? SUMMARY:Dartmouth — FILM NIGHT: Screening and discussion of obesity epidemic documentary "Fed Up"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for free refreshments and a screening of the obesity documentary “Fed Up.” Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and journalist Katie Couric examine America’s obesity epidemic and question the role of both the industry and government regulators in contributing to sickness. This BRI event is part of Dartmouth’s Public Health week celebration. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: In conjunction with the week-long series of events put on by the student-led committee that promotes National Public Health Awareness week on campus\, our BRI-Dartmouth chapter held a screening of the film “Fed Up” for 16 students.”Fed Up” is a recent documentary about the obesity epidemic. It is a very good film that discusses how the food industry has captured the regulatory power and influence of the government. it does not come across as “free market propaganda” to the average viewer\, but there is an unmistakable message that government involvement in these matters can make things worse.

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine — LECTURE: Dr. Timothy Law "Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play" or Medical Fee for Service
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Timothy Law Lecture: “Healthcare in the Heartland: Paid to Play\,” or Medical Fee for Service\n\nDr. Timothy Law will be talking about his practice as a rural medical practitioner. He will be discussing his work with the Amish community and how he has formed a very successful rural practice built on a medical fee for service model. Dr. Law is a Assistant Professor and Medical Director for CTRU\, & SHAPe as well as a Associate Director of Rural and Urban Scholars Pathway.\n\n \nPOST-DEBATE SUMMARY: Forty students attended this event\, with 25 signing up for more information about BRI. Dr. Law discussed the benefits of directing his own practice\, especially one that is rural and that deals with the Amish population. He talked about the costs and fees associated with owning your own practice and ways to maximize patient care while also making a decent living. It was really interesting to learn about how he interacts with his patients and some of the payment forms that he has received\, which is a benefit to his more informal rural practice. He has also been able to get many of our medical students involved in this experience\, giving them hands-on clinical and treatment experience. Dr. Law is a great mentor for our school\, and we always enjoy having him speak to learn the different ways we can provide excellent patient care\, while still making a great living.

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — MOVIE SCREENING: Poverty\, Inc.: "The Business of Doing Good"
DESCRIPTION:Poverty\, Inc.: The “Business of Doing Good.”\nThe Marian University School of Medicine’s BRI chapter is proud to screen Poverty\, Inc. to students and faculty. It is a bold look at “the business of doing good.” Please join us for refreshments and lively discussion following the film. \n  \n\nFrom the film’s website:\n“The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development\, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry — the business of doing good has never been better. Yet the results have been mixed\, in some cases even catastrophic\, and leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. Drawing from over 200 interviews filmed in 20 countries\, Poverty\, Inc. unearths an uncomfortable side of charity we can no longer ignore.” \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Eighteen students attended this free refreshments and film screening. After the movie it was opened up for discussion. People were really questioning the purpose of NGO’s and things we can do individually to make sure things like this do not happen. Empowering the citizens of the poor countries is key to getting them our of poverty\, as opposed to just giving them free things all the time. In the end\, the documentary raised more questions than answered. But the documentary made many people aware of what is going on\, and now the message can be spread through word of mouth from what was viewed in the documentary. \n“The screening went great. Timmy Global Health made it a mandatory screening for any club members that planned on traveling to the Dominican Republic for their medical mission trip this summer. While I don’t necessarily agree with making things mandatory\, it helped based on the number of people that attended.” ~Trenton Schmale\, BRI-Marian president \nThe attendance for this documentary screening was better than the documentary screening Wait Till It’s Free last year. I think it opened up the eyes of some people that were unaware to this\, and hopefully it allows them to see things through a new perspective when they go to the Dominican Republic or other foreign country when they do mission work. \n
