SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine—BRI Welcome Meeting and Introductory Talk with Dr. Kamal Gursahani
DESCRIPTION:POST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-four (34) students and faculty attended our BRI Welcome lunch and listened to BRI Faculty Adviser Dr. Kamal Gursahani\, MD\, MBA and Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Gursahani opened the meeting with a short talk about leadership. She mentioned the importance of taking an active role in education and the medical industry in general. Dr. Gursahani praised BRI for our role in providing clarity — or at least a balanced perspective — on many of the issues going on in healthcare today. \nFollowing Dr. Gursahani\, John Flo\, BRI-St. Louis President\, gave a short powerpoint presentation summarizing BRI. Mr. Flo spoke about who Dr. Benjamin Rush was\, BRI’s guiding principles\, what BRI-SLU accomplished last year\, and what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. John emphasized the educational and professional development opportunities that come from BRI membership\, and also encouraged students to think about leadership. \nFollowing the presentation\, Mr. Flo answered students’ questions and talked to several MS1’s about applying for officer positions. He reported that students were much more engaged and excited about these topics than he expected\, and attendance also was higher than he anticipated. It is clear that there is a demand for open dialogue and discussion about healthcare solutions on medical school campuses. \nTESTIMONIALS from Saint Louis University students: \n“I really enjoyed learning about who Benjamin Rush was\, because I always wondered why the group was named after him.” \n“The ‘Wait Till It’s Free’ documentary sounds very interesting! I look forward to hearing their perspective on the British healthcare system.” \n———— \nNOTE: This event takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nEveryone is welcome to come find out about Benjamin Rush Institute\, a non-profit\, non-partisan 501(c)3 organization dedicated to promoting solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care empowered by a robust free enterprise system\, which fosters innovation and reduces costs. Our Faculty Adviser\, Dr. Kamal Gursahani\, will speak about BRI’s positive impact on the healthcare debate and the importance of leadership in education. \nPapa John’s pizza will be served for lunch. RSVPs are appreciated.

SUMMARY:The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) — Meeting: Welcome & Introduction to BRI
DESCRIPTION:POST-EVENT SUMMARY: Twenty-two (22) OSUMC students attended the BRI Welcome Event on campus. Over lunch\, they listened to presentations by Brennan Wright\, BRI-OSUMC President\, Nic Miller\, BRI-OSUMC Co-President\, and Linda Pan\, BRI-OSUMC Vice President. Brennan welcomed everyone to the event and introduced BRI. Linda then spoke about the different opportunities within BRI\, including the opportunity to attend different types of local and national meetings and conferences\, and making connections with professionals and other medical students. Nic Miller then related his experience about participating with BRI over the past few years\, and explained the reasons for some of the financial problems currently in healthcare. \nBrennan then spoke about the importance of price transparency and Surgery Center of Oklahoma’s success with this model\, which led to a great discussion about the extrapolation of transparency principles\, and whether these ideas are possible everywhere — even in emergency settings. Linda finished up with a detailed introduction to direct primary care and concierge medicine\, which generated a thoughtful discussion about its effectiveness. We also discussed our current “insurance” and how it differs from what most of us at the meeting consider “insurance” (more catastrophic). \nOverall\, it was a well-attended\, thought-provoking\, and educational event! \n—————— \nThe student leaders of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Benjamin Rush Institute Chapter cordially invite you to attend a free introductory meeting for prospective members to learn more about our organization. We plan to share a few key points on liberty in health care\, such as why costs are rising\, how a free market system can be applied\, and alternative ways to run a practice. \nBRI’s mission is “Promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care\, empowered by a robust free enterprise system\, which fosters innovation and reduces costs.” \nWe will be serving lunch and discussing how BRI promotes solutions for affordable\, quality healthcare\, innovation and excellence. RSVPs appreciated to manage food and beverages. \nNOTE: This takes place in the eastern time zone.

SUMMARY:Georgetown University School of Medicine — Talk: From Fortress to Frontier: How Innovation Can Save Health Care\, by Dr. Robert F. Graboyes
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! BRI-Georgetown is pleased to host in conjunction with Startup Hoyas Med\, a well-received talk by Dr. Robert F. Graboyes\, of The Mercatus Center at George Mason University. Dr. Graboyes’s lively and educational talk explains how healthcare innovation could save the American healthcare system — and what we can do from a policy perspective. \nRSVPs are appreciated. We’re sorry\, but due to funding limitations\, we will only be able to serve food to Georgetown students. \nNOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: \n \nDr. Robert F. Graboyes of the Mercatus Center\, spoke to 36 Georgetown University medical students on healthcare innovation and what needs to be done from a policy perspective to open up markets so that healthcare innovators can decrease costs and increase access for all patients. Specifically\, Dr. Graboyes touched upon how the FDA (or any drug approval process)\, medical education and state laws (such as Certificate of Need) should be reformed. His talk was very well received and there were many questions from the audience. \nThe event went well\, with a greater turn out this year relative to last year when Dr. Graboyes spoke at Georgetown. \nThe Georgetown medical students were very receptive to Dr. Graboyes’ message of the need to reduce medical regulations and open up markets. In fact one student said she though Dr. Graboyes “had many excellent ideas.” \n

SUMMARY:University of Louisville School of Medicine—Town Hall: Healthcare panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event occurs in the eastern time zone. \nAll are welcome to University of Louisville’s first BRI event of the academic year. We are extremely pleased to bring you three renowned healthcare experts—each focusing on a different area of specialty and addressing a variety of concerns. We will allow plenty of time for Q&A. \nFood will be served. RSVPs are appreciated! \nMatt Bevin\, Republican Candidate for KY Governor will discuss his ideas about healthcare solutions for Kentucky. [NOTE: In keeping with BRI’s 501(c)3 status\, this is not an endorsement or political event.] \n  \n \nDr. Josh Umbehr\, AtlasMD has long been a proponent of transparent pricing and free market solutions to healthcare delivery. A speaker at BRI’s 2015 Leadership Conference in Washington\, DC.\, “Dr. Josh” is a favorite speaker for those seeking to understand how free markets best serve everyone—doctors\, patients\, and the underserved. \nAkash Chougule\, Deputy Director of Policy at Americans For Prosperity will discuss his extensive research into the ACA\, including non-partisan findings that confirms the fears and predictions that many people have had since the introduction of President Obama’s healthcare law. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Over 100 students and faculty attended BRI’s first University of Louisville event of 2015\, where they heard Dr. Josh Umbehr discuss his concierge family practice and the Concierge Medicine Revolution\, Mr. Matt Bevin speak about healthcare in Kentucky\, and Akash Chougule present healthcare facts and figures from Americans for Prosperity and the CBO. \n\nThe event concluded with a panel discussion and audience Q&A. This event provided an incredible amount of information on healthcare. The audience asked very thoughtful questions for 30 minutes. Our only regret is that we did not have longer to discuss healthcare with these three incredibly knowledgeable gentlemen. Please stay tuned for more excellent\, educational and informative events from BRI-University of Louisville!

SUMMARY:2015 State Policy Network (SPN) 23rd Annual Meeting\, Grand Rapids\, MI | Sept. 29 – Oct. 2
DESCRIPTION:From the SPNAM.org official website: The SPN Annual Meeting started in 1993 in Traverse City\, Michigan. A dozen people met in a room with the hope of building a robust network of state think tanks throughout the country. Today\, the SPN Annual Meeting brings together over 900 people from around the country\, including state and national leaders\, influencers\, and professionals. \nWe believe that being good enough is not enough to win in the rapidly evolving political environment. We can’t afford to be outgunned\, outmanned and outspent. The future of the country depends on it. \nThat is why the State Policy Network has hosted the Annual Meeting for 23 years running. \nThis year\, the Annual Meeting is returning to the state where it all started. Freedom fighters will gather in Grand Rapids\, Michigan\, with an intentional focus on developing the solutions and skills to advance freedom at both the state and national level. Through the lens of our 2015 theme – Experience Freedom – we will consider ways to sharpen our solutions and strategies and help our core audiences envision their need for freedom. We will inspire and challenge ourselves to give Americans opportunities to experience the benefits of freedom to their everyday lives. \nThe program focuses on building leaders\, refining operations\, cultivating excellent communication and outreach strategies\, analyzing policy priorities and training top-notch fundraisers. The SPN Annual Meeting is also the only outlet where state and national leaders can chart collaborative strategies together. SPN purposefully creates an environment to facilitate connections and build coalitions. \nPlease note: This is a private event\, and SPN reserves the right to refuse registration and entrance to the event.

SUMMARY:@NEJM: Ask the Author & Experts: Physician Payment After Medicare Doc Fix
DESCRIPTION:The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) forum held a 40-minute taped Google hangout with panel participants. There was a lot of heated debate about the free market between Josh Umbehr\, AtlasMD and the other panelists. Kristy Hawley\, former chapter president of BRI-Georgetown\, was the student moderator for the online debate. Ms. Hawley was able to ask a question that alluded to the fact that all of these new alternative payment models are driving consolidation into hospitals\, and that it is also difficult for independent physicians to participate in these models because the price to play is too high with the requirements. \n“One criticism I have heard is that solo physicians and small groups do not have the economies of scale needed to participate in alternative payment models that require large amounts of data collection and administrative reporting. Other than providing financial incentives for providers in help them take a risk in investment\, are there any proposals for how to make participation a possibility for all providers? Is there any concern that these new payment models contribute to hospital mergers and practice acquisitions which could in theory drive up costs by decreasing competition?” ~Kristy Hawley\, BRI-Georgetown \nThis debate got 168 views.

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine — Lecture: How Free Markets Benefit the Poor
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nDr. Beth Haynes\, BRI Executive Director and former emergency room physician\, will deliver her talk Poverty as a Determinant of Health — Markets as the Cure wherein she discusses the demonstrably beneficial effects of free market forces for those who are most at risk. Specifically\, we will discuss how unfettered enterprise can make healthcare more affordable and more accessible to everyone. There is a common misunderstanding among medical students that a free market neglects the poor\, and that healthcare management demands government intervention. Dr. Haynes will shed some light on the false premises at the heart of this issue. \nAll are welcome at BRI events. \nLunch will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated. \nVisitor parking: Hickory East Garage\, 3424 Hickory Street\, St. Louis\, MO 63104 \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nTWENTY-FIVE students attended and responded favorably to Dr. Haynes’ presentation — asking questions throughout the lecture and staying after to discuss the topic further.

Dr. Haynes’ pointed out that the problems we see in healthcare are a part of the larger problem in our country (and the world) — poverty. She suggested that in order to truly help people afford healthcare\, we need to find ways to stimulate the economy and help them generate wealth for themselves. Based on history\, the best way to accomplish this goal is through free market principles. \nJohn Flo\, BRI-President SLU and lecture organizer\, believes many students have a short-sighted view of how to solve the current problems in healthcare\, and Dr. Haynes’ lecture speaks precisely to a longer term\, more solid foundation for better policy answers than short-sighted government programs. Many quality questions were asked. BRI-SLU was honored to host Dr. Haynes\, and served The Vine sandwiches for lunch. \nAdditionally\, after the lecture\, BRI-SLU held its first “Medicine on the Rocks” event for Friday night. Seven students and the BRI officers attended. The attending students have come to other BRI-SLU events and three have applied to be officers next semester.

SUMMARY:SUNY Downstate: Presentation — Direct Primary Care Practices: Improving Primary Care Access and Quality
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Josh Umbehr\, Founder of AtlasMD\, a Direct Primary Care facility in Wichita\, KS will make a short presentation and take questions about how a Direct Primary Care (DPC) model of healthcare delivery works. \nNOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern time zone. ALL are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served; RSVPs appreciated. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 25 students attended the presentatioin. BRI-SUNY Downstate\, along with SUNY Downstate Med Council\, and SUNY Downstate University Council hosted Dr. Umbehr for an informal Q&A session about how Direct Primary Care works\, especially in his practice based in Kansas\, Atlas MD. He touched on many topics\, including price transparency\, access to health care\, and how his business model affords him the opportunity to spend much more time working with patients instead of paperwork. It was a very big success\, as the talk went on for about 80 minutes\, and not a single student left until we needed to vacate the room for the next meeting. Attendees were all very engaged and excited about the model. \n“The event exceeded expectations. Students who were skeptical asked some tough questions\, but Dr. Umbehr answered very politely and knowledgeably. A testament to his effectiveness is that the two students that asked the toughest questions were the very students that stuck around afterward to talk to him more. Both left saying that they were very glad this event was organized\, and asked him if they can email him in the future for more information. I think that pretty much says it all.” ~Mary Hahn\, BRI-President\, SUNY Downstate

SUMMARY:St. Louis University School of Medicine — Movie Night: "Wait Till It's Free" Documentary Review & Dinner
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the central time zone. Visitor Parking is in Hickory East Parking Garage\, 3424 Hickory Street\, St. Louis\, MO \n \nAll are welcome to BRI-Saint Louis’s first official BRI event! Dinner will be provided while we offer a showing of the acclaimed documentary “Wait Till It’s Free.” We also plan to leave plenty of time after the viewing to discuss the documentary and talk about what we may or may not agree with in the film. Click on the icon above to view the first 20 minutes of the film\, free. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 21 students attended. After a quick introduction and reminder of upcoming BRI events/deadlines\, students ate Thai food and watched the documentary “Wait Till It’s Free.” After the film was over\, students stayed for an additional 30 minutes to discuss. \nThe discussion started with a summary of general thoughts and questions about the film. Some students were curious what the essential differences between the Canadian and British systems were. Other students were confused about how Samaritan Ministries worked. In general\, we had an open and balanced discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the documentary. \nMost of the students thought that the documentary had very good points to make\, but was unbalanced. This is to be expected from a documentary\, however\, and we discussed possibly showing an alternative documentary such as “Sicko” by Michael Moore. The students were very grateful for the event and many expressed interest in coming to more events! \nTESTIMONIALS & FEEDBACK gathered from attendees:\n“Keep hosting events. These are great opportunities to think about how we provide care and even though most physicians get into medicine to help people these conversations illuminate our actual ability to fully help patients.” \n“I would like to hear more about what BRI is doing in bringing changes to the healthcare system.” \n“I would like to see the other side of the documentary presented\, with someone arguing for a single payer system and against capitalism in health care.” \n

SUMMARY:Icahn School of Medicine @ Mt. Sinai: Presentation — Introduction to Direct Primary Care (DPC)
Indian food will be served; RSVPs appreciated. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Dr. Josh spoke to 75 students and interested community members about how under Direct Primary Care\, patients pay doctors directly for primary care instead of paying through insurance. For doctors\, this means seeing fewer patients and spending significantly more time with each one\, avoiding the hassle of insurance coding and billing\, and striking a better work-life balance. For patients this means receiving greater access to their doctors\, enjoying the convenience of same or next day appointments\, spending very little time in the waiting room\, and improving overall better health outcomes. All this is done for less than a hundred dollars a month. \n“Students were incredibly engaged and fascinated by the talk. Numerous people followed up with Dr. Josh\, and several have already requested that he returns to talk again. The Indian food was also a huge draw at the event.” ~Haran Sivakumar\, BRI-Icahn\, President

SUMMARY:Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (Chicago) BRI Chapter — Fall General Meeting and Planning Event
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This takes place in the Central Time Zone. \nALL are welcome to attend Chicago Medical School’s Benjamin Rush Institute Chapter’s first informational meeting and networking event. We will be serving snacks and soft drinks\, and will discuss BRI’s mission to promote solutions that protect the doctor-patient relationship as the primary means of delivering quality medical care. \nWe will also use this as an opportunity to invite interested students to run as BRI Officers\, or volunteer\, and what events we would be interested in holding for the remainder of the academic year. \nWe hope you’ll join us! \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nEight (8) interested students joined us at our inaugural event. This meeting had a dual purpose: to serve as a general meeting for the chapter board and affiliated members\, and to provide prospective members — many who had signed up for our email list earlier in the year — information on what we do to achieve our goals\, and how to become full members and seek board positions. \nUnfortunately\, for reasons beyond our control\, we were moved from our scheduled room\, and unable to adequately communicate the change. Needless to say\, turnout was much lower than anticipated. We are going to hold another event soon to ensure that everyone interested has an opportunity to learn about BRI. \nWe did have a productive meeting among board members and other active members\, and have a good plan for the rest of the year in place.

SUMMARY:George Washington University SMHS | Lecture | "Fortress & Frontier" in American healthcare reform
DESCRIPTION:“Fortress & Frontier” in American healthcare: How to think about healthcare reform. \n  \nALL are welcome at this event to hear the argument that politicians from BOTH SIDES of the political divide are approaching healthcare reform all wrong! At least according to Dr. Robert F. Graboyes. Dr. Graboyes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Institute at George Mason University. BRI-Georgetown is very happy to welcome Dr. Graboyes back for a repeat delivery of his very insightful\, much requested healthcare innovation lecture\, “Fortress & Frontiers.” Dr. Graboyes will discuss what NEEDS to be done from a policy perspective to open up markets\, which allow healthcare innovators to DECREASE COSTS and INCREASE ACCESS for all patients. \nRefreshments will be served; RSVPs are appreciated! \nFor further reading by Dr. Graboyes:\nWhy Both Sides Are Losing the Healthcare Debate\nWhy ‘Repeal and Replace’ Will Never Work \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: 45 students and faculty joined us for Dr. Graboyes’ lunch lecture.  \nThe current healthcare debate misses the point: Politicians from both sides of the aisle determine the success of healthcare policy by the extent of the coverage and NOT the cost of care\, nor the quality of the care provided. \nIt’s not Left vs. Right … It’s Fortress vs. Frontier: Dr. Graboyes states that the goal of the Fortress is to prevent any imaginable bad outcome in healthcare and to shield those in the medical industry from any competition. The Frontier understands that innovation\, quality elevation\, and cost suppression cannot occur without bearing some risk and encouraging economic competition. \nThe idea that “Healthcare is Different” is a false narrative: Dr. Graboyes compares the healthcare industry to the technological industry\, noting that technology companies\, such as Apple and IBM\, have been in competition which elicited vast expansion and cost reduction in the industry. The argument that healthcare deals with risks that are far greater than that of other markets is untrue. Technology has been used in crime that ranges from identity theft to terrorism\, yet few would argue that these risks outweigh the benefits associated with these technologies. \n“Dr. Graboyes went above and beyond expectations by staying after his presentation to personally discuss with five intrigued students for an additional 1.5 hours.” ~Jacob Leedekerken\, BRI-President\, George Washington University

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine — Lecture: Direct Practice Medicine: Can the Free Market Fix Healthcare?
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nPlease join us for an enlightening lecture by Dr. Jonathan Schmidt from Priority Physicians. Dr. Schmidt will discuss Direct Primary Care\, Concierge medicine\, and a hybrid model. He will further explain how insurance\, medicare\, medicaid\, and RVUs work as well. This will be an informal lecture with lots of time for questions. \nDr. Jonathan P. Schmidt is a board certified physician in family medicine. He received his undergraduate degree in Microbiology from Southern Illinois University and went on to the University of Illinois where he received his doctor of medicine degree. Upon graduation\, Dr. Schmidt moved to South Bend\, IN\, where he completed his family medicine residency at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center\, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. \nDr. Schmidt sought out experience in direct practice medicine during his residency and is excited to be practicing in a way that allows him to put the needs of his patients first. In his free time\, Dr. Schmidt enjoys spending time with his wife Cristal\, son Kiptyn and daughter Kenley. He also enjoys being outdoors and participating in water sport activities. \nFood and drinks will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated! \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY:\nBefore an intimate student audience of 13 students\, Dr. Jonathan Schmidt talked briefly about Medicare/Medicaid\, RVUs\, and insurance. He then spoke on concierge medicine\, direct primary care\, a hybrid model\, and the positives and negatives of each. \nAfter his 25-minute presentation\, Dr. Schmidt opened it up for questions. For the next hour attendees asked questions on very engaging topics: malpractice insurance\, ethics of being a businessman while also a doctor\, the lifestyle of a direct practice doctor\, how to get more educated on direct practice medicine\, different pricing strategies\, how patient care is improved\, the future of healthcare\, and many more! It was a great talk and we look forward to the next time Dr. Schmidt comes back. \nTESTIMONIAL:\n“Benjamin Rush Institute has done a fantastic job bringing in a diverse group of physicians from across the Indianapolis area; Dr. Schmidt is certainly one of them. It was a pleasure to hear him talk about the field of concierge medicine. I was not familiar with the topic so many of the concepts he was talking about seemed impossible with the current state of medicine. Learning that concierge doctors see significantly fewer patients and have the opportunity to spend more time building the doctor-patient relationship\, was incredibly refreshing. Dr. Schmidt’s talk helped me realize that the medicine I want to practice is not the pipe dream I once thought it was.” ~ Gabe K.\, Marian University student attendee

SUMMARY:Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine: Lecture — Healthcare Policy with Dr. Todd Fredricks
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to attend a lecture presentation on healthcare policy and the future\, by Dr. Todd Fredricks\, family practitioner and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at OUHCOM since 2012. Dr. Fredricks has been a long-time advocate of what it takes personally\, and pro-actively in healthcare policy\, to be a great doctor. He has been a long-time BRI supporter\, and was a featured speaker at BRI’s Leadership Conference in 2014 in Denver\, CO. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty (30) students were present to hear Dr. Fredricks speak about his experience in the medical field and his interesting perspective on what the future of medicine and health policy holds for us as future physicians. He educated us on some of the political issues that recent presidents and congresses have previously\, are currently\, and will be dealing with in the future\, and how their actions impact our future. Mostly\, Dr. Fredricks focused on the financial issues that our country and we as doctors will have to face. Although it was shocking to hear what Dr. Fredricks had to say\, we all found his discussion and viewpoints inspiring and motivating as we look to make changes for the future of medicine. Dr. Fredricks stressed the copious benefits of cutting waste from the medical field\, increasing quality and developing meaningful relationships with our patients. \nThe event was a great first speaker event for BRI-OUHCOM new members. Dr. Fredricks is the BRI-OUHCOM Chapter advisor\, and often talks at meetings. He shared his illuminating experiences in both military and clinical medicine\, providing members with a wonderful overview.

SUMMARY:George Washington University: Lecture — Dr. Josh Umbehr\, MD\, on practice innovation\, patient advocacy and health policy
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the eastern time zone. Food will be provided; RSVPs are appreciated. \nALL are welcome to attend this evening presentation. Dr. Josh Umbehr from Wichita\, Kansas will be in DC this Friday\, Nov. 6\, to speak about his creative — and increasingly spreading — approach to addressing the pressing issues of the need for medical practice innovation\, patient advocacy\, and workable healthcare solutions. “Dr. Josh” began AtlasMD\, a direct-primary care practice\, in which patients pay a modest monthly fee and in return have nearly unlimited access to primary care. This model allows doctors to have fewer patients than average\, meaning more time for doctors and patients to interact. He will speak to why Direct Primary care may be the answer to better healthcare in the US. \nThere will be a mixer following at Mission in Dupont. \n \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: Thirty-five students from Georgetown\, GWU\, and Howard University listened for a little over two hours as Dr. Josh Umbehr discussed his innovative approach to addressing rising healthcare costs and healthcare quality for patients in rural settings. He shared with the group his unique business model for AtlasMD\, a company he helped develop\, and how its principles and concepts can be applied universally to areas other than just family practice and in rural settings. \nA key point that Dr. Josh presented to the group was that as busy medical students we think outside the box and challenge the norms\, especially in a system that has been accepted as “broken.” Dr. Josh exemplified the ability to challenge the status quo with AtlasMD and the benefits he is able to provide his patients. He also spent some time pressing the group to think about how health insurance is different from other forms of insurance\, and the appropriateness—as well the consequences of the current ideology around it. \nDr. Josh spent the last 30 minutes or so of the discussion running through some example scenarios on how he is able to save his patients’ money. One example was in the area of prescriptions.  He demonstrated systems he uses to discuss with his patients what prescriptions would be best for them based  not only on effectiveness\, but also cost. It surprised many of the students to discover that some prescriptions can be purchased for even less than the cost of some insurance plans’ co-pays. \n  \n“Dr. Josh went far beyond expectation with his speaking engagement. He went an hour past the hour we reserved for the talk due to group interest. He also joined the group at a social event after to allow for more discussion on a more informal level.” ~Jacob Leedekerken\, BRI-GWU leader & event organizer \nTESTIMONIALS: \n“Dude\, that was an amazing talk yesterday. So interesting!!!” \n“He’s the best! I’m bummed I didn’t get to speak with Dr. Josh more! I had to duck out at 8 to meet a friend for dinner. I was dying.” \n“One thousand dollars! — I’m sold — let’s keep the conversations going.”

SUMMARY:SUNY Downstate College of Medicine — CHARITY EVENT: Fundraising for East Flatbush Village Incorporated
DESCRIPTION:BRI-SUNY Downstate will be listed on gofundme.com\, and hosting a free information and donation table outside the cafeteria to raise funds for this very deserving non-profit organization that contributes back to our community. East Flatbush Village (EFV) works with local at-risk youth to help them better their lives. SUNY Downstate and BRI both encourage student leaders to give back to the community and to those in need through charitable work. Please stop by our table and contribute what you can! \n \nA word about East Flatbush Village from their website: “Our organization combats violence within the community by providing these children with recreational activities and educational tools. Our programs enables youths ages 3 through 18 years old to express themselves in creative and positive ways while building their self esteem through football\, swimming\, soccer\, dance\, cheerleading and other recreational activities. These activities provide the youths not only with resources and outlets but also with mentors such as teachers\, coaches and volunteers\, who are willing and able to guide them. Building them a strong foundation which they will carry with them into adulthood.” \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: As part of a service learning project at SUNY Downstate\, three members of our BRI chapter worked to raise money to donate to East Flatbush Village Inc. We utilized both gofundme and a donation table outside of the cafeteria to raise funds. In total we have raised approximately $550. \n“I have been volunteering with EFV through two different clubs at school\, and after seeing first hand how they give kids the tools to reach their full potential\, I feel very strongly that donations to this organization will be used very effectively. EFV works on the front lines in a disadvantaged community where violence and povertry are all too real. The folks who work there understand the community and know how to best serve the community’s youth. Perhaps even more importantly\, EFV understands that each child is unique\, so they tailor their outreach programs very effectively to the kids’ different interests and needs.” ~Mary Hahn\, BRI-SUNY Downstate president

SUMMARY:Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine: Lecture — Baffling with BS: Placing Evidence Based Medicine Under the Microscope
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event takes place in the Eastern Time Zone. \nALL are welcome to join us for a lunch lecture “Bias in Medical Data\,” with Dr. Timothy Von Fange. Dr. Von Fange will be speaking on how the bias that occurs in medical data affects how doctors practice medicine. \nFood and drinks will be provided. RSVPs are appreciated. Park in the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine parking lot. \nPOST-EVENT SUMMARY: An intimate group of four students enjoyed lunch and listened as Dr. Von Fange delivered a great lecture on all the different types of biases in journal articles: selection bias\, recall bias\, chronology bias\, performance bias\, citation bias\, confounding bias\, etc. Recent data states that 33-80% of meta-analyses are found to have an industry tie. He then went on to talk about “subtle bias\,” where an article’s author may have an indirect interest (career advancement\, political advancement\, personal associations). \nDr. Von Fange then talked about the Patient-Centered Medical Home and a few studies showing how “efficient” it was. He really went into the numbers on these studies and it was clear there was “data misrepresentation.” One of these studies for the patient-centered medical home actually showed that health spending accounts were more effective\, but it was never mentioned in the discussion of the article. Dr. Von Fange concluded\, when reading a journal article there should be a healthy amount of skepticism and to scrutinize research data before believing it all.
