St. Louis University School of Medicine: CODE BLACK Movie Screening

Welcome! This will be the first event held by the St. Louis University School of Medicine BRI Chapter. We will give a brief introductory message about what BRI stands for and hand out informational material. Following the introduction, we will show the "Code Black" documentary. Finally, we will encourage attendees to attend our next event which will hopefully be held in March.

Parking is available at Hickory East Garage Visitor Parking, 3424 Hickory Street, St. Louis, MO.

Code Black is a must-see documentary for any medical student, regardless of specialization. This documentary is about Emergency Room c-booth-traumamedicine, and specifically about the LA County Hospital’s C-Booth trauma center. Follow the eye-opening, real world experience of ER doctors as their ability to deliver quality ER care changes when they move from the Old County Hospital to the New County Hospital. St. Louis University School of Medicine — Lecture: How Prepaid Health Management Could Prevent Medicare Bankruptcy

Dr. Charles Willey, physician and CEO of Innovare Health Advocates will discuss the numerous healthcare businesses he has created and managed in the St. Louis area for almost 30 years. Specifically, we will discuss how he works with Medicare Advantage patients to keep them happy and healthy, all while operating at a fraction of the average cost. Dr. Willey's business model shows that keeping patients healthy saves them money, which makes them all the more happy — this is true "healthcare." You can read his testimony "Oversight of IRS’s Legal Basis for Expanding Obamacares’s Taxes and Subsidies" before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Health Care and Entitlements.

Our Faculty Adviser, Dr. Kamal Gursahani, will speak about BRI's positive impact on the healthcare debate and the importance of leadership in education.

BRI Haynes Beth Executive DirectorDr. Beth Haynes, BRI Executive Director and former emergency room physician, will deliver her talk Poverty as a Determinant of Health — Markets as the Cure wherein she discusses the demonstrably beneficial effects of free market forces for those who are most at risk. Specifically, we will discuss how unfettered enterprise can make healthcare more affordable and more accessible to everyone. There is a common misunderstanding among medical students that a free market neglects the poor, and that healthcare management demands government intervention. Dr. Haynes will shed some light on the false premises at the heart of this issue.

ALL are welcome to join us in a Skype teleconference with Dr. Keith Smith, Co-Founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. Dr. Smith is making a special appearance for the BRI-Saint Louis University Chapter and other interested students to discuss price transparency in medicine. We will learn about his pricing model at the Surgery Center of Oklahoma with a question and answer session following.

We also hope to discuss how price transparency will affect the medical field in general and how we can help facilitate free markets in our future profession.

Direct Primary Care Business Model, with Dr. Josh Umbehr

BRI Josh Umbehr, MD Dr. Josh Umbehr addresses the BRI Student Leadership Conference 2015 in Washington, DC.

Dr. Umbehr will talk to students about his direct primary care business model during a lunch meeting. RSVP is not required. The plan is to give students exposure to and a better understanding of direct primary care. This will prepare them for the ensuing debate that evening about the single-payer health care model. Food provided for this event is generously funded by the Family Medicine Interest Group. Thank you!
